You aren't the only one who reacted this way! Lots of black folks thought this was sung by black folks! It's all good! Love the reaction and they have a TON of hits!!!!🙌
Speaking of wrong reactions, how about how many people thought the Righteous Brothers were black? It’s really fun to see the reactions of music from yesteryear being brought back.
Over 1000 songs written by the brothers. Try How Deep is your Love, Love you inside and out, Jive Talking, More than a Woman, You Should be dancing, Nights on Broadway, Night Fever...that's just a handful from the 70s. They had a 40 plus year career. No other group compares. Great reaction!
You have four decades at your disposal, with for example "To Love Somebody" in 1967, "How Deep Is Your Love" in 1977, "You Win Again" in 1987 or even "Alone" in 1997, just to name a few Bee Gees songs...
The song makes you sing and dance but it's a sad song about homelessness, hunger, and joblessness but through it all they are staying alive. The Saturday Fever soundtrack had multiple #1 hits, such as How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever, and a song they wrote for another artist named Eyvonne Elliman If I Can't Have You. You must Listen to Fanny Be Tender With My Love, Tragedy, and Jive Talking, to name a few. They wrote #1 hit for Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton, Island In the Stream, and Also hits for Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Olivia Newton-John, and others.
Robin recalls, "The subject matter of 'Stayin' Alive' is actually quite a serious one; It's about survival in the streets of New York, and the lyrics actually say that". Barry Gibb also recalls, "People crying out for help. Desperate songs. Those are the ones that become giants. The minute you capture that on record, it's gold. 'Stayin' Alive' is the epitome of that. Everybody struggles against the world, fighting all the bullshit and things that can drag you down. And it really is a victory just to survive. But when you climb back on top and win bigger than ever before, well that's something everybody reacts to everybody".
They wrote Chain reaction for Diana Ross, Heartbreaker for Dionne Warwick, Immortality for Celine Dion, Islands in the stream for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton and the Guilty album for Barbara Striesand. Not to mention people who covered their songs like Al Green How can you mend a broken heart and Michael Bolton To love somebody to name a few. You would enjoy Nights on Broadway (1975 midnight special), Wind of change (1979), Words (1989 Melbourne) and Medley 1989 Melbourne ❤❤
Stayin' Alive was written during the Son of Sam time in New York, when David Burkowitz, serial killer, was shooting and killing people at random. So they wrote this song about survival... hence, Stayin' Alive. They were geniuses together ❤❤❤
This was my first time sitting in with you today, thank you for allowing me to do that! I enjoyed the time I spent here with you so while I was here I subscribed and left a like for you! I loved the reaction of finding out that this was done by the great Bee Gees, when I'm sure you thought that it was done by a black group as most people assume, so you are not alone in assuming this! It's called Blue-eyed soul!
"You asked for more BEE GEES songs, here it is"......... NIGHT FEVER LOVE YOU INSIDE AND OUT JIVE TALKING HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE EMOTIONS (sampled by Beyonce) MORE THAN A WOMAN There's so many to chose from!
New York Mining Disaster Words How can you Mend a broken Heart Lonely days To love somebody There are many, many songs from the 60’s to the 90’s. And they wrote for Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Barbara Streisand to name a few.
The Bee Gees rabbit hole is a long ride, but you won't be disappointed. Many, many, many hits and even more hidden gems through many decades from late 50s to 2001; 2016 if you count Barry's In The Now album.
3 brothers started in the 1950s. Wrote and produced many songs 1000 plus hits for Celine Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick Barbara Streisand Dolly Parton. 3 brothers and the sounds track of Saturday night fever. Also Grease with Travolta
One of my favorite songs written by the BeeGees is . To love somebody which was written for Otis Redding who sadly passed before he could record it. Michael Bolton sings this song and really does it proud. My fondest memories of all the disco BeeGees Era was being 14 and skating to all the BeeGees songs I'm 60 now but still a fan love my BeeGees ❤ enjoy your journey its magical. ❤❤❤
The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack was SO huge back in the day that the Bee Gees became associated in the public mind with Disco...but they considered themselves 'blue-eyed soul' artists. During the disco backlash of the late 70s/early 80s they could not get their own music on the radio, so they wrote and produced songs (and some albums) for other artists including Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick and others. One of the most popular examples, as mentioned in other comments, was the Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton duet 'Islands in the Stream'. The Bee Gees also sang 'Islands' in some of their recorded concerts which are well worth watching.
This song was in the iconic opening of Saturday Night Fever with Travolta strutting down a Brooklyn street swinging a paint can. ❤ Also a banger from the same soundtrack with the big Disco dance scene: You Should Be Dancing. ❤ Great react!!!!!
Look up 'How do you mend a broken heart?' by the Bee Gee's it was very quickly recorded by Al Green. They said it was their favourite cover of one of their songs ever. They wrote for Dionne Warwick, (Heart breaker), Diana Ross (Chain Reaction). Otis Reading was about to record one of theirs too, but, he died in the accident before he had the chance.
They are from Manchester England, they migrated to Australia in the 50's bur came back to England to get a chance so they could make it in the music world
You gotta watch the movie with John Travolta this is a sound track to one of my favorite movies Saturday Night Fever the movie is a classic and they also was on most of the soundtrack. The whole soundtrack is a classic
Great song, great album and great movie. This album was the absolute pinnacle of Disco. They're not just white, they're Australian white. You should check out the music genre of Blue Eyed Soul.
You're right about never investigating the music. There's a ton of music I've heard a zillion times yet never really paid attention to. There's people discovering music for the first time doing reactions and there's people who are rediscovering the same music along with you.
finally someone with a genuine reaction . but this is from a time when people had talent, could harmonize, and used real instruments, not someone just talking with a electronic beat box rhythm. They have several other big hits.
I’m here for more BG soulful classics - check out “ How deep is your love” “ Love you inside out” “ Love so right “ “ Fanny be tender” and the list goes on and on. Subbed
I always took this to be a song about survival, and the difficulty of surviving ("stayin' alive") in a hostile, screwed up, unfair world...and the setting, and its feel, reflects that. Whether it's a run down building, a ghetto, a ghost town, the feelilng seems to me the same for those in it, and, again, reflects the theme of the difficulty of life and the struggles in just stayin' alive, one day at a time, whether you're a brother (which, rightly or not, I always took to mean a Black male) or a mother (which again, rightly or wrongly, I always imagined as a single mom, trying against all odds to provide for her kids, raise them right, and keep them alive. And, btw, you weren't wrong when you mentioned their hits. If you check it out, or the comments fill you in, you'll be floored at their accomplishments, which extend way beyond what we get just from listening to their recorded songs...and their contributions (as I recall they gave all proceeds of one of their huge hits to UNICEF, to help the world's children). p.s. It wasn't just Barry's hair the women dug-- the boy was up to his ears in the piles of panties thrown at him.
This is from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, one of the biggest albums ever. They performed or wrote most of the songs on it. It defined a generation. They've published over a thousand songs, and they've been performing together since 1958. They were a part of the British Invasion in the 60s and reinventex their sound several times. That rabbit hole is deep and there's not a bad song in it.
The BeeGees were: the tallest and oldest brother (with the big hair and beard), Barry Gibb, born September 1, 1946, the only surviving Gibb brother. Robin Gibb (with the long hair, no beard), born December 22, 1949-passed away May 20, 2012, and Robin's fraternal twin brother Maurice (the balding brother with the beard, pronounced "Morris") Gibb, born December 22, 1949-passed away January 12, 2003. They also had another, younger, brother Andy Gibb, born March 5, 1958-passed away March 10, 1988. The three oldest brothers were born on the Isle of Man (UK). Oldest brother Barry got seriously burned when he accidentally pulled boiling tea over himself at 18 months old. He was in coma for a while, nearly died and was in hospital for many months. Because of this, he did not learn to talk until after the twins were born. Later the family moved to Manchester and from there they emigrated to Australia in 1958, right after Andy was born. All 4 brothers are just natural musical talents. All of them dropped out of high school in their early teens and none of them could read or write music. All their compositions were created completely organically. Their musical career, which they had started as little kids, didn't lead to international success so they moved back to the UK in 1967. Then they had a string of big hits, until they temporarily broke up around 1970 for 15 months. Started back up, looking for a new sound which they first found in 1974 with the transitional album "Mr. Natural". After that "Main Course" was the first album that moved them into a new direction: more rhythm&blues, dance music like with great hits like Nights on Broadway and Jive Talkin' (and was also actually the first album on which their logo was introduced). From 1976 on they went all out with falsetto driven dance music which lead to their biggest commercial success as they provided classic songs for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977 Stayin' Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever amongst them). You should react to the 1979 live version of Stayin' Alive, too ruclips.net/video/7niXSh7vWRI/видео.html Other great songs to analyze: great album tracks from the 1979 Spirits Having Flown album, the title song: ruclips.net/video/WH_j90fCIk4/видео.html, the outrageously beautiful song Reaching Out ruclips.net/video/vfHUS5Mf00Q/видео.html. From their Still Waters album, Smoke and MIrrors: ruclips.net/video/MT9vRHSWNbk/видео.html. From the 1960's I've gotta get a message to you ruclips.net/video/CA4CInDnTk8/видео.html. And from the 1990's the simple song Blue Island live in an accoustic version: ruclips.net/video/162GlAEpfrY/видео.html. Andy was kind of Barry's mini me, about half a foot shorter and 12 years younger but they were the only lefties of the family. However, his voice was nowhere near as broad in range or as strong as Barry's. As producer Alby Galuten said in the book "Tales of the brothers Gibb "Andy's falsetto was nowhere near Barry's." Andy had a lower, huskier, sound to his voice and his range was not as big as Barry's. I personally always thought his voice was much better suited to songs of his first album, Flowing Rivers. Andy died of myocarditis - which is an inflammation of the heart - on March 10, 1988, 5 days after his 30th birthday. His heart had been weakened by his drug addiction over the years which, by the way, was also the main reason for his split from Victoria Principal. He also had a congenital heart problem that was later also discovered in Barry and Barry's second son Ashley. Try listening to the song Dreamin' on ruclips.net/video/-KdBVKcSSSw/видео.html which is kind of a duet with Barry. And here are the 4 brothers live on stage in 1979 doing You Should Be Dancing ruclips.net/video/_6MR-E_Qzz0/видео.html And finally a few photos of Barry and Andy: i.postimg.cc/jS6n3Jkv/Barry-Andy.jpg and i.postimg.cc/TwnPh8M0/82c126fc42a35d3b737867af41338199.jpg and the 4 brothers with their mother i.postimg.cc/FRNMbwkD/b9b2561eadffee11347573c97063c2f8-zpsd89478eb.jpg
@@kathleenmayhorne3183 Yeah, I know, Leslie is the oldest of the 5 children and - as she got older - turned into a clone of mom Barbara. She stayed in Australia when the family moved back to the UK, because she had married an Australian and raised a large family of 8 kids. Her oldest child, Bernice (Berry) unfortunately passed away in 2021 at the age of 56. Leslie did not aspire to continue on in music; instead became a dog breeder.
Loved your reaction! The look on your face was priceless! Other reactors said this is in a lot of “ black movies” what ever that is? And also surprised that white boys could sing like that. As an old white guy I consider that a compliment. Keep up the good work. Also like the comment on your hoodie
A lot of black reactors have made comments that this Bee Gees song was in a lot of “black” movies. The majority also thought the singers were black and their facial expressions were just as perplex as yours.😂🙌 Surprise!!🥳✨💫 Another interesting thing is many also comment on their older generation family members loving The Bee Gees songs. When they find out these family members knew the artists were white but never mentioned it, they feel cheated or misled. It just never crossed the older generations minds to do so because to them it was irrelevant. Good music was just good music.💕
The BeeGees were all born in England and they emigrated to Australia as very young children. 4 boys, Andy passed as. teenager and a sister, I don’t think I ever heard their sister , Lesley sing. I remember watching those 3 men Barry in the middle, with Robyn and Maurice now passed who were twins singing on TV here in Australia as very young boys. Vid is on RUclips. Barry and sister Lesley are only 2 still alive.
If you want to be wowed by talent and sample the pen of the Bee Gees, check out A Woman In Loveby Barbra Streisand. The song is cool af and, especially if you've never heard Barbra sing, I thibk you'll be blown away. Great video, you're always fun to watch.
Bee gees are from isle of man. Check out ellan vannin. Last time robyn came home before he passed i believe. Its the king William's quior one. We have a beautiful island. Last time he saw the green hills by the sea
The empty buildings are a metaphor for the emptiness of opportunity and surroundings. That's why "I'm stayin alive" Like.....not really living --- just staying alive in an empty place where there's no opportunity or reason to go on. And, yes, real voices -- no autotune on that stuff back then. All real voices.
Now that you mention it when you're looking at the video and where it was shot the song staying alive mean you could be living in the lowest part of life and yet you can still be staying alive
You are so funny! Looking like librarians and a costco manager...😂 Gorgeously handsome librarians & managers, that is!!! Please react to more BeeGees such as Nights on Broadway, I Cant See Nobody, Run to Me, How Do You Mend A Broken Heart, Alone, Reaching Out. TIP: The early 70s to late 80s performances are the best performances for these songs. Except "Alone", which was written later. The late 90s performances are 30 years after their first international hits and Barry's voice is not as strong. So he sounds better in the 70s to early 90s at the latest IMHO. The Melbourne 1974 performance is amazing and all the Midnight Special tv performances are GREAT!!❤❤❤
Fun fact, the first ever drum loop was invented by this group of musicians and sound technicians. The drummers mum or dad got sick and he couldn't be there for a while so they improvised with this consistent drum loop
They have written over 1000 songs, probably much more than that by now, Barry is still writing, he is the only one still alive! This song is from the movie Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta! And Barry wrote the title song for Grease! All of their music was great! You have a long way to go!
You didn't expect those British white boys to have that much rhythm and soul!! Your first reaction had me belly laughing. I loved it. The Bee Gees are legendary. Legendary. They have pipes!!! And what's even more mind-blowing is they can all 3 be lead vocal with no trouble. They all have the ability. These guys ruled. They were the band that ruled my childhood. Everyone loved the Bee Gees. How could you not? It's the movie set for the movie Stayin' Alive. Its just a song of trying survive back in the 70s. People were starving and dying right in the streets. Gas certain foods were rationed. I remember it. You had stamps to get gas for your car. You could only buy so much. We had a farm so we didnt starve. Not everyone was so lucky. Jobs were no where. Pay was non-existent. Homeless wasn't a term yet. They were called bums. Thats the truth of it. There were no shelters. Churches weren't running big soup kitchens like now. In more rural areas none of this existed. The song was just about trying to make it. And then there was the Son of Sam all at the same time. It was harsh. Barry Gibb wrote a song for the times.
The setting of the video is the scene of the slums of NewYork at that time. Hard living, crime, violence. Just like alot of the dangerous communities we live in today. Doing whatever necessary to stay alive.
Fun Fact: The American Heart Association recommends performing CPR at the same tempo as this song.
Yes! It’s the perfect rhythm!!
And another one bites the dust
Adding to the list: "Call me Maybe"
lmfao
That’s most interesting. I didn’t know that.
You aren't the only one who reacted this way! Lots of black folks thought this was sung by black folks! It's all good! Love the reaction and they have a TON of hits!!!!🙌

LMAO!!! You are not the only one who has that reaction listening to the BeeGee's. I always laugh when I hear, "I thought they were black"!

Dude, Barry’s hair is life goals. 😂

Yep, everything they wrote was a hit!
Tragedy is really good. It’s a little different for them, but very good.
During the 1970s everyone called the Bee Gees and Elvis's music "Blue Eyed Soul". Your grandparents loved soul and the Bee Gees.
Thats wy I love the Bee Gees. Everybody knows the Song Staying Alive. But not everybody knows its a Song from the Bee Gees 😂❤❤❤
Stayin' Alive was written during the Son of Sam time in New York, when David Burkowitz, serial killer, was shooting and killing people at random. So they wrote this song about survival... hence, Stayin' Alive. They were geniuses together ❤❤❤
Excellent points 👉
“New York times effect on man” makes a lot more sense with that information
Wow that’s wild i never knew that

Listen to “Oh Darling” it’s soulful. I don’t think this one was written by The Bee Gees but Robin sounds so good.

They also have an older sister Leslie, she can sing, and could fill in if one bro couldn't be there, she never dd go commercial though.
Yep.
Loved your reaction! The look on your face was priceless! Other reactors said this is in a lot of “ black movies” what ever that is? And also surprised that white boys could sing like that. As an old white guy I consider that a compliment. Keep up the good work. Also like the comment on your hoodie
dionne warwick heartbreaker
A lot of black reactors have made comments that this Bee Gees song was in a lot of “black” movies. The majority also thought the singers were black and their facial expressions were just as perplex as yours.😂🙌 Surprise!!🥳✨💫
Another interesting thing is many also comment on their older generation family members loving The Bee Gees songs.
I put The Bee Gees up there with Queen, Earth Wind & Fire and ABBA.
Most of us don't "investigate" grandma's favourites. 🫶🏼😊
Not a boy! 😆❤️✌️
If you want to be wowed by talent and sample the pen of the Bee Gees, check out A Woman In Loveby Barbra Streisand. The song is cool af and, especially if you've never heard Barbra sing, I thibk you'll be blown away. Great video, you're always fun to watch.
Bet these guys got more hits than you got socks!😂Grew up with this ...geeze,your Grandma?😅Not old enough..but yeah! She had taste!😆
They were loved, hated and loved again. I’m so glad you of this generation are finding out how great the music of the Boomers is.
Your grandmother was cool 😎
They did write song for Kenny ronger island in the stream.they got a lot of songs from Saturday night fever lp.
The Melbourne 1974 performance is amazing and all the Midnight Special tv performances are GREAT!!❤❤❤
Back than Saturday night fever LP came out there are 2 vol.lp.you can see see their face on the LP, so we know is white.
You gonna have your hair blown all the way back! ❤
You should watch Saturday Night Fever for a deep dive.
They had them some funk, yo.
Doing whatever necessary to stay alive.
michael jackson and barry gibb all in your name
