DUDES the no audio test makes total sense, like Dobrik's work is JAM PACKED with visuals -- I don't think he realizes how much of a compositional and director mastermind he is and continues to be hahaha
@@smartypants7885 I have no doubt he's aware that his editing is intentional, mine's more a comment on how David composes shots. I've noticed that because of the age range that David lives in, that group of kids have been exposed to different sorts of stories in all different formats and mediums, so the creators most definitely take from the various aspects of what they've absorbed through various visual storytelling principles and apply it to their own work. It's interesting to think about how kids have learned the principles of cinema just by observing and mimicking, as opposed to having any sort of formal training in the medium.
Do more breakdowns on the why of certain channels' success. I'd like to know more about how certain channels target certain audiences but actually go further than that and branch out across demographics. You two are up to this task I'm sure.
Yet again you’ve added a new phrase to my vocabulary “the over the shoulder test”. Something I’m not too sure how I’d bring to my channel, but something that I’ll be trying to figure out anyway! Cheers guys! ✌️
David has been using science for virality since the dry ice in the pool days. I think that first dry ice video is how he ended up in my recommended feed initially. Another great video by Colin and Samir 🤙🏼
I think another really interesting thing here is how Nick's co-opted the kind of content that's proven popular on talk shows, and brought it to a new platform. As someone who has regularly said they'd love to be a talk-show host, David is absolutely someone who would get that and find a way to integrate it into his format. He's done it with other elements too - his car chats are essentially his take on the talk-show format. The lines have obviously blurred between the formats, as talk show hosts continue to find an audience on RUclips and adopt RUclips-esque formats (especially the likes of James Corden). It goes to show that things can flow just as well in the other direction, without having to have a RUclipsr actually host a talk show, as with Lily Singh.
Did the "no audio test" on the Colin and Samir podcast, somehow still got some great information. The storytelling is just that good. "Over the Shoulder" test is a good one, it'll be on my mind from now on.
Oh wow he was briefly on big brother way back in the day as well but he was like the first person eliminated because he was perceived as seeming "too intelligent to trust" & now he's here, how amazing!
another interesting topic might be the effect of changing titles and thumbnails of videos some days after upload. I clicked on many videos a second time thinking it was a different one
Wow the no audio observation is so true, it starts to make you think about thinks like never before, take the shot of a Tesla being given away, without even seeing Carly's crying reaction you know because of the simple red bow on the car that it is clearly a gift, even if you were someone who had never watched a Dobrik video, you know that isn't just a car driving into a driveway, it is present and as a viewer you are already excited as to who might be getting it.
Dude I've been using tiktok for a bit over a month now and gained 25k followers. My best performing video had 2.1M views. That being said I can assure you that visual storytelling is everything on TikTok. I also strongly suggest the use of text inserts if you are explaining something in your videos. This helps reduce your video time, while still providing value in such a short amount of time. Make it as if someone could understand the point of your video without audio and watch your views skyrocket 🤙
Can "Over The Shoulder" content exist without RUclips...probably not. OTS content is different than traditional story based content. OTS content is the sound of a car accident. It's a shock. Shocks aren't stories, they're mysteries. Shocks aren't evergreen content, either...without a story to explain them. Even when they show clips of nuclear bombs going off in a video...it's part of a long form documentary and there is context provided before and after the bomb detonates. OTS content is a mystery that makes you want to find out the story behind it. The only way you can do that is via media platforms like RUclips. Or some other platform that allows long form communication. RUclips is the best platform for this discourse. Without RUclips, the other social media platforms would not be able to exist. Perhaps even the internet itself could not exist without RUclips, because it provides so much back story for all the other content created in the world by all the mediums of communication.

Dan Purcell David’s podcast conversations & interview responses suggest his editing is intentional

The "no audio test" was something that I've never heard about before. I love the originality of the ideas discussed. Good work guy!
Of course you’ve never heard of it...there’s no audio ;)

The over the shoulder test blew my mind - so simple! But so effective! 🤯 -- also, kinda scary how I’ve seen all the Tik toks you embedded in here! 😳
Yet again you’ve added a new phrase to my vocabulary “the over the shoulder test”. Something I’m not too sure how I’d bring to my channel, but something that I’ll be trying to figure out anyway! Cheers guys! ✌️
I'd love to see a video about Yes Theory and what's so compelling about the human connections they make

That’s a great point. So much of talk show entertainment ends up in David’s vlogs.
"the over the shoulder test"
What a great tool to think of sticky and fun ideas! :D
