    when comparing tiktok to youtube, I get it that it seems concerning for youtube creators because it seems like the audience might be leaving youtube or gen z not tuning in. But I think there's a huge difference between the types of content you get on each platform. you can't really fit a good tutorial in a tiktok, it's hard to tell a good story on tiktok, I dont see musicians releasing 15 second songs... if titok transitions to long form videos they'd have to lure in youtubers somehow or tiktokers would have to learn how to deliver long form videos.
    btw great video, we love your stuff (we are 3 brothers running our channel, it's in hebrew so don't even bother haha)

    Well done! Other thing that’s interesting about TikTok is the company itself sponsors content unlike any other platform. #TikTokPartner was something I’d see all the time in the early days... but still to this day they pay creators to post X amount of videos on a monthly basis. Which I don’t totally understand at this point. They’ll also pay creators to promote certain initiatives or campaigns like the recent #LearnOnTikTok push for tutorial content on the platform.

    13 minutes, 49 seconds...hmm, little different from 7:00 or 5:00. But honestly, I don't want 7 or 5. The "extra" personality or joke bits are what make Colin and Samir, Colin and Samir. It's like bringing the YT audience into what the podcasts are like.
    From an analytical perspective, why you guys are at 100k is an interesting question. I don't have the answer, but I don't think cutting The Breakdown shorter (at least not the main episode) is the answer.

      TikTok is for the low attention span group. Which seems to be growing....

  • @jgaurano
    @jgaurano 4 года назад +2

    I love your work on this episode! I do have one concern with TikTok... and before I get into my opinion, I would love to state that I absolutely love TikTok. And, I currently co-own / work with someone where we grew a TikTok account to over 1.7 million followers (averaging 3 million views a video) in six months. In addition, I have many friends in the TikTok space (creators and people who work there)... so this opinion, though strong, comes from a good place.
    -
    At around 9:06 you mentioned how TikTok can push out (or essentially boost) a creator's video to the for you page, especially if the creator is doing a brand deal. I think this where it goes a little grey. Why? Because oftentimes it means that the post itself isn't being drawn out by the algorithm, but rather someone playing with the switches inside of TikTok.
    -
    TikTok is supposed to be about meritocracy, they call themselves the "democratic" platform. However, by boosting these posts to the fyp they're sidestepping this mission statement.
    This goes even further beyond brand deals.
    -
    TikTok wants to create their culture: they want to dictate kind of what they want their platform to look like... hence when the TikTok ambassador started (especially in the beginning of things) - they would start pushing out these TikTok ambassador creators they felt would represent their "new culture beyond dance" to the fyp and which would "auto-bot" these creators to have millions of followers.
    -
    I'm not naming any names, but it becomes apparent when you begin to see a creator who exploded on the platform, who is a TikTok ambassador, and then bam! When their posts aren't boosted - the democratic world of TikTok comes into play and the views on their videos are slim to none (inconsistency).
    -
    And we're not just talking subtle difference, I'm talking massive. For example, a brand deal post / boosted post that has 4.5 million views and then bam! their next line of videos is at around 30k-50k views. I can understand maybe 200k-300k. But if you have millions of followers (and you're posting consistently with the same type of content) the gaps shouldn't be that massive.
    -
    Yes, you can say the algorithm fluctuates with RUclips or IG or any other platform in general. However, the big difference is RUclips isn't pushing recommended based on what they think the culture of RUclips should be - or if some big brand is paying them lots of $$$ - whereas with TikTok - for a site that says it's all about the democratization of creators - a little hypocritical
    -
    There are so many beautiful things about TikTok (I mean hell. my partner and I are making a decent amount of money from TikTok). But this one thing is one of the dark sides of the platform.
    -
    I understand this might be a strong argument - and I'm glad my username here isn't the same on my main TikTok channel or I think I would be in trouble (lol not I just feel as if I'm into conspiracies). But this is something to think about. If you want to talk more about it, I would love to get more into the weeds.
    -
    lastly, keep doing what you're doing. I adore every moment :D

    • @carmel.k
      @carmel.k 4 года назад

      That's a fair argument. Did you see their last video where they commented on the CEO's explanation of how TikTok is like a society? I had sooo many questions after that. I still do:). Really I have nothing to comment against your points. I get what you mean.

    • @jgaurano
      @jgaurano 4 года назад +1

      @@carmel.k thanks! I love this channel so I think I've seen all their videos at least once if not three times (some are just really good not to repeat). And for this argument? I'm just lucky that I have TikToker friends (who also make a fulltime living from TikTok) who are willing to speak about this stuff. So the argument isn't really from me per-say... just gathering of info from everyone I know in the space

    TikTok is walking a fine line right now about what direction they go in for the future. They don't want to end up like RUclips. They might not realize it, but these 2-3M followers creator isn't what keeps the platform running, it's the 10k - 300k that just don't care, make funny videos, and realistically cannot be monetized on a large scale. If TikTok converts to a marketplace for products, they're going to lose much more of their audience than they might expect. For every person who has downloaded TikTok to watch the creators featured in this video, 5 more just miss Vine. TikTok cannot afford to lose the "everyday creator", especially if it means making everyone a Charli D'amelio, brand-friendly, creator.
    Trust me, I'm Gen Z.

    When people in America say “I’m working 5 jobs, I’m working 7 jobs” what does that mean? I’ve only ever heard that said by Americans. How can you work 7 jobs? Are short contractual hours in America a given?I mean it’s common for some businesses to only give you like 4-8 hours a week but would a person genuinely find 7 different places to work 4hr/a week shifts at once? Seems bizarre.

    I had no idea they had a marketplace. Sponsored background music is also something that makes sense, but I didn't think about. That's interesting! I have 190k followers on TikTok, and the most i’ve gotten for a sponsorship was $75. I’m 17, so I can’t be qualified for the TikTok Creator Marketplace just yet, but as for now I don’t even have the negotiation grounds for a good price of a sponsorship:(

    Really great video. I started my channel on RUclips 2 years ago and I’ve struggled to get to 500 subscribers and over 1k in views. In the relatively short time I’ve been on TikTok I’ve gained 25k followers and some of my videos have reached 400k views. For my journey TikTok has been the better platform to work on.

    I am a Tiktoker with 320,000 followers and I don’t receive brand deals and can’t find a way to use the “funnel” for RUclips or instagram. I earn money in the Creator fund but it isn’t enough to pay my bills. Any ideas on how to better market of shift my audience to increase the chances of either a brand deal or funneling them to RUclips or instagram?
