Adam Savage Learns About Full Body Puppeteering at Henson's Creature Shop!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 апр 2023
- While Adam has some experience with full body puppets (Totoro, Revenant Bear), his costumes weren't made to wear for hours on end, nor did they include heavy animatronics. At Jim Henson's Creature shop, creative supervisor Peter Brooke takes Adam through the designing and building of Junior Gorg from Fraggle Rock, while performer Morgana Ignis demonstrates how to bring the beloved character to life!

Hii
Sally Mae fans rejoice!
I think I shall! It’s been a very long time. I always loved this show as a youngster back int he day. The level of detail captivated my ADHD mind lol
What about face tracking? or would there not be space to pick up the eye month movement from inside the mask?
I'm dying to know what was being pixeled out... Secret project? Or naughty muppet...
The best part of this video is at 11:34 when the head puppeteer matches the body performer's vocals and Adam starts to make eye-contact with the Junior Gorg instead of the performer.
I noticed that too! Goddamned adorable.
The magic of Jim Henson's puppets is how the performers become the characters.
@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 a few years ago I got to meet Red and Mokey Fraggle. I like to say it that way because while it was Karen Prell and Kathryn Mullen with the puppets "on hand", I found myself having a full on conversation with the puppets.
@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 I remember seeing a clip of when Jim Henson was a guest on Carson's Tonight Show, and I think he started the interview normally (as Jim) but then a minute or two later, he puts on the Kermit puppet and Jim disappeared right in front of our eyes. I think Carson even mentioned during that interview how incredible it was having a conversation with a puppet, even though the performer was right there. The Henson puppeteers are almost "too" good at what they do sometimes. I've also had the pleasure of attending a handful of performances of "Puppet Up!" over the years and that show format has the same juxtaposition where the performers don't stay hidden at all, they just wear solid black outfits on the stage and their puppets are framed by a camera that is positioned all the way downstage-center looking at the performers. There are projection screens in the theatre that the audience can see that shows the puppets as if you were watching them on TV at home. To be able to see it all happen in real-time is kind of mindblowing. The best way I've been able to describe the show is that it's like "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", but with puppets! They do lots of improv during the show, too. It's just...incredible. And FUN!
@@gustafsone Carson literally asked Kermit if he could ask Jim a question. Made me laugh so hard.
For those that don't know the person in the suit is Morgana Ignis. She was in Obi-Wan Kenobi. She played The Sandman in the 2017 Film 'The Sandman' and she's been in a bunch of Sci Fi/horror. I love her style and the name Morgana.
Hehe I have many MANY creatures within me ^__^
And don't forget Helluva Boss! Loved her as Sallie May.~ ^-^
@@morganaignistube I love your work so much!~ Big fan. ^-^
@@hraefn1821 Helluva Boss not Hazbin☺️
@@KomaedasOneTrueHope Brain fart! Meant helluva boss. ARGH XD
I'm incredibly excited to see their work for the Five Nights at Freddys movie. There is no other studio that is more perfect for a film like that than Hensons workshop, and I cannot wait to see the quality of the suits and how scary they might look.
i think it might be a blurred freddy head in the background of wide shots
Freddy Fazbear
Yeah the blurred thing is from FNAF😀
How long before an adult version comes out?
wait I didn't know Henson workshop was doing FNAF! that's incredible news!
The amount of little kid joy and wonder in Adam's voice is so amazing to hear.
was totally disrespectful when he lunged at the shoe and talked over Peter.
Plus, the whole "Oh my gosh. These people make me look like a random RUclipsr! These people are GOOD WITH COSPLAY!"
@@skezus was totally disrespectful to say he was intentionally talking over him when it was obvious Peter didn't mind
@@juggerNOTtoday he was clearly annoyed. Maybe, I was disrespectful but who knows.
I've always felt he exhibited a child-like wonder throughout his time as a Mythbuster.
I LOVED Fraggle Rock as a child, and seeing everything behind even one of the side characters is phenomenal. The Henson’s assembled a group that loved what they were doing and put their heart and soul into it. They were absolute MASTERS of puppeteering.
LOOK, MA! I CAUGHT A FRAGGLE! Was my instant reaction
i love fragile rock so much when i was littel
I remember having seen an episode or a few in Finnish dub. That was around mid to Late 90s when I had a babysitter with my baby brother. 🤔
90s in general had lots of series’s I can still remember… while getting to feel like an ancient relic…
This brought back so many memories. I watched the series as a kid. It feels nostalgic seeing one of the characters come back after so many years.🥹
The little Doozers at the back ❤️❤️❤️
Watching Adam geek out over movie props and special effects will NEVER get old. Most of the nerd world is living vicariously through YOU Adam! Keep it up!
I love seeing John, the puppeteer, mimicking Morgana talking.
In a CGI era, that is so wholesome ❤
Always loved how creative and impressive puppeteering was, and still is today.
Hope the Fraggles soon come to Netflix or Disney+, or my local free TV someday. I'd binge watch the remake right away.
Well, they're on Apple TV+!
@Marc Kloosterman it's too bad, really, because that platform is a no-go for a lot of people. Hopefully, they will expand to other platforms in the future.
@@falxonPSN 😂 That makes about as much sense as saying Disney+ is a no-go for a lot of people hopefully they expand Star Wars and Marvel to other platforms in the future.
@razorpit i can't imagine that they would, considering both those franchises are disney owned
@@razorpit I mean, if you think so, sure. I know that a large number of people have no interest in their streaming platform. Even many who own their branded stuff.
The hands of the puppet looks very agile. The head mechanism looks very impressive & the monitor inside makes it sound like it was the HUD of a powered exoskeleton.
I love how the puppeteer kept animating Junior while Jamie was interviewing Morgana.
I've done a bit of amateur puppetry and can confirm, once you're into the swing of things it starts to feel _wrong_ for the puppet to not be 'present' even when you're not performing.
It's only when you put them down they stop being a 'character' and revert to being an object. It's weird.
*Adam
The childlike awe when Adam gasps with excitement is so endearing. He's like the Peter Pan of science and the creature shop is Neverland.
The mentioning of Adam’s Totoro costume just reminds me of the absolutely gorgeous Totoro puppets that the Creature Shop did for the recent stage adaptation in London.
YES SO MUCH THIS!
I don't sqeee! like a fangirl often, but when I do, it's about Miazaki and the Henson creature shop.
I want to see some sort of image of Totoro 😭 I'm on the wrong side of the pond.
It's such a thrill to see behind the scenes of any muppet production :)
Yesss(:
Right?!!!!
@@tested aren’t they doing the fnaf FX? I can’t wait!
THANKS FOR WATCHING, EVERYONE!! 🖤
It's a joy ^~^
makes me wanna be a puppeteer too
Great job! Can tell you’re top of your game. I have experience knowing what it’s like being on set from dusk till dawn for 18hrs+ at times in a costume for months on end, but nothing quite as elaborate as the ones you work in! You have my utmost respect as I know how challenging it can be. Every time I felt miserable I’d just step back and realise how amazing the memories are that I was making. Made the days go in so much quicker lol. Most of my locations were in Scotland so it was mostly freezing, but sometimes sweating my butt off lol.
What was pixelated behind you here 14:23?
Nice video. Idk if you’re gonna see this comment but, where did the drawing from you’re t-shirt come from? It’s very neat
That’s so interesting and you look like you’re having a blast playing that character 😊
As a RC enthusiast to see push rods and servos moving, and creating expression on a character so familiar to my childhood is just amazing. Thank you Adam and JHCS!
YES - ABSOLUT AMEN - I am beyond almost orgastic for this kind of RC/servo/etc creativity \,,/
Morgana, you brought Junior to life instantly, nuances, gestures, loved it.
Such harmony between the movement and the mechanicals.
right? she was amazing. definitely was nice seeing Junior brought to life again after so long (i havent seen the show in like 30 years).
@@DeloreanJack yes Morgana is a woman.
@@DeloreanJack yes Junior, the character is a man. But the person in the suit is a woman named Morgana. Glad I could clear that up for you.
@@DeloreanJack Junior (the character) is a boy but Morgana is a girl 😊
@@Dakahrii whatever you say bozo
I was just cry-laughing when they put the upper bodysuit on and she just *whoomph* disappeared for a second. The amount of talent it takes to puppeteer a suit that doesn't match your body proportions at all...! Everyone involved in making and wearing these suits is amazing.
absolutely adore Morgana's outfit!!
The innovation out of the Jim Henson company is what makes then the GOAT, it's insane how much craft and care they put into their puppetry.
This fills me with joy in just so many ways, it's actually difficult to articulate just what it is I appreciate about all this. Both Adam and the Henson company, you make me feel like there's one less barrier for me getting back into theatrical production.
These videos have felt like such a love letter to my childhood. Thank you for all of these and letting me live some of my biggest dreams through you.
It was a dream day for us … and more videos coming!
For me, the thing that makes me think most of Full Body Puppeteering, in relation to the Jim Henson Company is Bear in the Big Blue House; I still can't comprehend how Noel MacNeal was able to puppeteer and voice a character, in a suit that was noticeably weighty and cumbersome, and probably required either lots of rest breaks or the AC cranked up to the max. That's a show I really hope eventually gets the same revival efforts that Fraggle Rock is currently receiving.
It's not really that complicated. If you've ever seen Big Bird, you'll know that Bear is operated in the same way.
These Henson company videos are so good!
We can't even describe what a special day this was for us.
@@tested Is there any more videos coming up from this little 'series'?
I grew up in the 80’s so any reference to Fraggle Rock brings up a wonderful feeling of nostalgia. So cool seeing how this puppet works.
Watching Adam geek out is ALWAYS an utter delight
I watched this entire thing with a giant smile on my face. Once Morgana put on the suit it was like magic, and Junior Gorg was alive.
I now want Adam to interview the puppeteers for the Lion King musical.
You can tell morgana loves her job!
ABSOLUTELY!
@@morganaignistube love your skirt... and your puppetry lol

@@Dakahrii poor delicate baby! So easily triggered. Be careful. Your bigotry is showing
@Dakari no
Man, I grew up with Fraggle Rock, and I would absolutely have to give Junior a hug if I was there. Just seeing how the costume works is amazing
Between the in-depth look at how Muppeteering has evolved in the last 35 years and Adam's ever-infectious childlike wonder, this video (heck, the whole visit!) is pure joy!
One thing that really tickles me is how immediately Morgana gives the character weight and gesture. I'm a large person and watching the character's hands rest on the tummy was very familiar.
So quickly the two puppeteers bring the creature to life. Amazing. Even when I know just how it all works it doesn't spoil the illusion. That's a professional.
The amount of respect you can see OOZING off of Adam during these Jim Henson shop visits is admirable. You can tell he has nothing but respect for the craft.
During first season of 'Dinosaurs!', a friend took me on a private tour of the set!
We have all seen 'behind the scenes' of Studios in general; lighting, sets, back-drops, props.
In Henson's world, we see puppeteers 'built into the set', or even living inside their creations.
In all of this, you are never prepared for how badly it stinks!
Here is a sample of the ingredients of the heady brew:
Paint of all kinds, adhesives, sweat, stale snacks, over-flowing garbage-cans, old beverages that got tipped over and are sticky to the floor, sweat, spilled booze, the odd joint shared around the set, more sweat.
And that is when everything is going well!
Desperation to make dead-lines contribute subtle notes of Lavender and collective Madness.
A professional set is grinding out footage 12-18 hours a day, under banks of hot light when it's active.
It's a big closed room with no air circulation between sessions.
"They smell baaaad!" Rock Biter, 'The Never Ending Story'
Once those eyes started moving, the creature, quite literally just comes to life right in front of you! Insane!

This brought my childhood right back in an instant.
....and THIS cosplay is on MY list......a list I will likely never get to, but still...
That was amazing, what a fusion of talents and technologies, how expressive is that mouth, and how on earth can normal sized human hands instantly become so huge like that. Wow.
THANK YOU for spotlighting Morgana!
Jim would be proud The Fraggles live on.
Amazing, I always loved the work they did at Henson's Creature Shop. They pushed the bounds of the technology I remember watching a Secret of the Muppets special as a kid that included an early fully digitally animated character. I've always had a lot of love and respect for what they've done. Thank you for these behind the scenes looks.
Seeing the Muppets and how both amazingly well crafted *and* how "Lets keep the price/weight/etc" down is just stunning to me. The amount of detail work and trials and testing over the years has to be mindboggling to find that perfect sweet spot for performer/crafter/designer. Just amazing.
AMAZING! This is the first time I've seen the interior of a gorg. About 38 years after seen the first Fraggles episode. But as a kid I was SO TERRIFIED of Junior! :D
No kidding! Junior was a terrifying character! And now I look at him with fondness, he feels like such a little kid in so many ways... Very different from how I saw things as a child!
OOOOOH HEY WOOOK MA I CAUGHT A FWAGGLE!!
JUNIOR GORG!!!! The Gorgs used to scare me when I was little, but now I adore them!! Omg this is so freakin awesome! ADAM IS SO LUCKY!!!!!
I love the excitement of Adam. It makes me so happy!
We love, and miss you Jim. I hope you return in your next life and continue this. You made my childhood amazing
For 20 years I've been watching Adam's genuine giddyness and astonishment and I will ALWAYS love everything he does. Thank you for making a failure in school a fan of science.
Or more than 20 years
Morgana was hilarious. Brilliant
Wow! This suit is nothing like the ones the actors wear at the Disney themeparks. I had a friend who worked as a performer for Disney at their Florida location and she measured the temperature inside her suit (at the height of summer, but in a shaded location) to be around 120 degrees F. This suit's mesh outer layer, even with all that yarn-work, must breath a lot better than Disney's polyester nightmares.
I will always love Jim Henson's Puppets. There is just something special about puppets that no CGI can be.
Wow, Adam really is like a kid meeting a childhood character he used to fawn over on TV.
what a gorgeous costume- wow
i hope stuff like this never goes away.. the mixing of costume and technology always blows my mind
love the corset boning and how they used the zip and press studs to connect to torso to legs
Morgana wore it well! Please somehow show us more inner workings of how character suits work from creators, Adam
WOW, I am so struck by how MANY people are necessary to make a full-body puppet like this work! The body performer, two or more people to put the costume on, a DIFFERENT person to operate the servos! Seriously, so many... This is slightly terrifying to imagine, becoming just a CANVAS for other people's art, to manipulate to their ends, and you're gonna HELP, but you're not FULLY independent... Just gives me more awe and respect for these Creature Shop pros!!
"As a puppeteer, your Situational Awareness has to utterly shift." "Oh, completely" "Your PROPRIOCEPTION has to now include the costume ."
I have never heard that word before! GOOGLE says :
-Proprioception (or kinesthesia) is the sense though which we perceive the position and movement of our body, including our sense of equilibrium and balance, senses that depend on the notion of force.
-For example, proprioception enables a person to close their eyes and touch their nose with their index finger. Other examples of proprioception include: Knowing whether feet are on soft grass or hard cement without looking (even while wearing shoes) Balancing on one leg.
.... Thanks for the lesson Adam!!
That thing scared the crap out of me when I was a youngster lol
Me too hahah
I've always wondered how they got the facial motions to work, and now that I know,it's still amazing to see a character brought to life, thanks Adam and The Muppet shop!👍👍👍❤❤❤
I love Junior. Such a great character.
There is something about puppeteering that just can never be replaced with animation.
They have a certain liveliness to them, so much so that they can actually get perceived as real people.
It would not take me long to adjust and interact with one of the muppets asif they were their own individuals.
had I KNOWN Morgana was in this video I would have clicked on it sooner, HOLY CRAP I love her and her work!!!!
This is so awesome. Just one problem.... the video cut off before showing the additional 5 hours of footage!
Ha! We have more videos to come from that day, too!
@@tested you better!

In all of these videos, it just feels like magic that everything can be brought together to make a compelling whole.
I understand sewing, I understand potentiometers and servos, but to bring them all together takes an incredible amount of skill.
I'd be just like Adam, fanboying over all this stuff.
Morgana! 💛✨
Never knew Morgana existed before, but I'm eagerly hoping she pops back to my feed soonishly! Such a grand person!
@@Dakahrii Truly dislike English and anglo-american culture that such things have to be speficied. In Finnish its easy: if it has a name, its "hän" (be it human or a pet), if not, it's "se" (that is, 'it').
But I do understand that if people get to choose their name, they should also get to choose pronouns as the extension of that name, in the same manner as Latin-languages specify the gender of household objects etc. I'm going to guess that Morgana would like to be seen as a "she", so until otherwise indicated. I'm not going to do so :)
Adam briefly mentioning the Godzilla costume sweat (which is 100% true by the way) makes me wish he could somehow visit the set of a kaiju movie and see the love and attention that would go into shooting something like that. I think he'd be absolutely delighted.
These videos with Adam at the Henson Studios are amazing!
Omg 😱 AMAZING! They are the masters, look how human like the movement is!
This was an awesome video but to be honest I'm now DYING of curiosity to know what it was they had to pixelate out of the shot!
Same. I hope it was something from the future that we're just not supposed to see yet rather than just something they were afraid RUclips would miss-identify.

It's probably related to The FNaF movie coming out
FNAF being a major film with the henson puppeters in mind is amazing

I love seeing the country bear heads in the background
Wow this was an incredible look behind the scenes, great work everyone. Love to see the mechanisms behind the magic
Gorg costumes/puppets were always my favorite because I wanted to be the one in there running around. Love it!
I was raised on Fraggle Rock, so this takes me back to being six and staring at the tv with a box of raisins.
In fact, on car trips when I got bored and wanted to know how much longer until we got where we were going, my mom would tell me the distance in Fraggle Rock episodes.
Of course back then we had no internet or devices to watch, so I had to imagine the episode in my head.
This company, and this show specifically, has always been my dream job.
I'm loving the series at the creature workshop but what I really want to see is the *muppet version of Adam* . 🤣
I always wondered how they do full body puppets! I've been rewatching Bear in The Big Blue House with my son and I'm always amazed by the puppetry
Bear works different actually! No tech, just one arm being used as the puppet arm for the head (eyebrows controlled by finger) while the other is in one of the actual arms (other arm is fake or sometimes a glove controlled by someone else). Noel MacNeal is honestly one of the coolest people alive. Big Bird works the same way!
This video was incredible! Thank you so much for the peek inside!
I've been waiting for an episode like this forever!!
My curiosity is wondering what was blurred out in the background at 12:35. I grew up on Fraggle Rock. My nickname was Fraggle when I was in university. Loved seeing the little Doozers on the shelf!
Gotta be something to do with the new fnaf movie as we don't even know what the animatronics look like and they are being created by the henson company. definitely a wild guess but completely possible

It is so incredible to be able to see how some of this puppeteering is done. It doesn't take away from the magic of a performance at all. You still get lost in watching the characters and forget all about the mechanics of it all.
I'm terrified of & yet simultaneously intrigued by full body puppets.
Loving these so much. The Henson Workshop is the ILM of the puppet world. Their work is always just insanely brilliant, and fluffy and in most cases very cute. 😂 Please let me know you’re doing a video with the dog from Fraggle Rock, I loved that dog as a child. 😂
