  • Adam Savage is a HUGE fan of puppets. And so a very special One Day Build was conceived when Rick Lyon, creator of the puppets for the Tony award-winning musical Avenue Q, invited Adam to stop by his Newark workshop to design and build his very own puppet. Everyone, please meet Finn!
    Shot and edited by Joey Fameli
    Production coordinated by Kristen Lomasney
    With special thanks to Rick Lyon of Lyon Puppets (www.lyonpuppets.com/), and to Ronald Binion and James Wojtal Jr.

  • @Corristo89
    @Corristo89 8 лет назад +117

    Seeing those puppets move is so strangely organic and human. You know it's just a bunch of glued foam, fake fur and felt, but the movements and the design make them seem like actual living beings. This is why Yoda from the original Star Wars trilogy is a billion times more relatable and organic than the CGI Yoda from the prequels. And actors interacting with puppets can actually react to something in front of them, which is being driven by another human, while the puppet is basically just a representation of another actor.
    You can't interact with a CGI character because there's nothing there. The only time I really saw a movie perfect that synthesis was in LotR, where Andy Serkis actually played Gollum in a motion capturing suit and spoke the lines. All they did was replace him with Gollum, but the actor's interaction with the CGI Gollum was exactly like it would be with a real character.

      CGI is a powerful tool that can create amazing things in the right contexts, but the technology is not at a point where actors and actresses can treat CGI elements and placeholders as real characters, like puppets. Even though Thanos in _Avengers: Infinity War_ and _Avengers:Endgame_ was really impressive and his interactions in each scene feel so lifelike, his CGI was an exception to the norm. The way Mark Hamill would have interacted with a stand-in prop for a CGI Yoda would probably have felt less tangible compared to how he interacted with a physical Yoda puppet. Plus, we have the example of Baby Yoda - I doubt a CGI stand-in would have been able to capture people the way a cute, small, and organically moving puppet did.

    Two things I love about puppetry is that
    1) puppeteers as soon as they put their hand in a puppet start doing the lip flaps in sinc with what they are saying without even thinking about it.

If you made them longer intentionally, bore a hole into the centre of the foam and insert a metal rod with a couple of finger slings on the end that protrude back into the inside of the skull... you could have rigged a wire catch that tilts each eye a certain amount in a certain direction and had a cool alien-like movement (in/out, both in/both out, one in/one out etc) from the eye stalks.

    I've always been fascinated by puppeteering. It's such a skill to imbue an inanimate object with such living characteristics. There's something really primally magic about it, like you're literally conjuring life.

    it's so much fun to see people build something together, especially if they are on that threshold of people doing something they do all the time (pockets for the little hands, skull caps, painting eyes) mixed with the pure creativity of combining the things they know how to make into a new thing.
    What fun little monsters and beasts these puppets are. I kinda wanna make one now (but it would probably end in tears, hot glue and fuzz)
