  • The Ruger MKIII is a fine .22LR pistol for target practice, plinking, or small game hunting. Failures to feed or eject the rounds normally do not occur. But when they do, here are some things you can check out.

    So shooting today and got my first stove pipes and feed jams after about 250 rounds. Gunsmith happened to t be at the range, so I asked him if after 250 rounds that was common since I read the MK II typically goes 500 before cleaning. Took a cleaning patch wiped off the feed ramp and inside the chamber, then the bolt face. Told to toss my lead ammo and use copper plated. Loaded up with some Aguila copper plated and no more issues. Main issue in this case was the bullets. He said same happens if you have wax coated bullets as well.

    polishing the feed ramp and getting the space between the feed ramp and the breach face is key in getting the Mark II and III to feed every round so that they will fire , I run mine till i get a miss fires , my Mark II I clean after every plate match . my range gun I run till it starts misfiring , then I do a complete detail cleaning . that's how i keep mine running great

    I clean my Mark IV every time I shoot it, whether 50 or 250 rounds. Today I put the Tandemkross Eagle Talon extractor and titanium firing pin and went to the range. No FTEs but several FTFs yet again. Can too much lube cause this? I don’t think I use that much I don’t think. Otherwise I think it’s maybe my magazines. The gun has less than 800 rounds through it. Also the area around the feed ramp I can’t seem to get all the gunk off. Any other suggestions? Great video and thanks. BTW I have a Ruger Mk IV Standard 500 serial

    Did you also put in the Volquartsen extractor. I heard they are great.

    I also bought a Ruger Mark iv. The first 70 rounds were without issue. Then the stove piping began. I usually get 4 or 5 stove pipes out of 20 rounds. The ammo I am using is Federal Match. This ammo works in my S&W 15 22 and Victory without issue. I installed an Eagles Claw extractor in my Ruger thinking it would cure my problem. No change. Currently looking for CCI Mini mags to se f this changes anything

      Yeah, that's way to many. First thing I'd do is call Ruger and tell them what's going on. Their service department has always been very friendly on the phone. Normally in my Mark III, I shoot Federal Automatch or Remington Thunderbolt without a problem. If you see malfunctions with the higher velocity CCI rounds, I'd definitely be on the phone with Ruger. Thanks for watching!

      Ruger stove pipes are kind of common for their guns because they have tighter tolerances and closer clearances (somewhere in the thousandths of an inch). The gun is not broke in fully so when it got a tiny bit dirty from the first 70 rounds it stopped working. Disassemble it take out the bolt and polish the extractor grove, extractor and clean the hole for the tiny spring. The extractor spring is still stiff so it is holding the casing and not letting go so when the ejector hits it it trips over the extractor claw (the effect is kind of like a hinge where the casing hinges outward but the claw is still holding it). Another cause is the bolt is binding which is slowing down the time it needs and not kicking back with enough force to eject the casing. However if it was a bolt issue not going back far enough then you'd likely be getting failures to feed too. So I stick with something is crapping up the extractor claw and it is acting as a fixed claw rather than a spring loaded one.
      Generally all issues with feeding and extracting and ejecting can be fixed by cleaning, polishing or addressing the extractor in some way in semi-auto firearms. That is literally the first place like 99% of gunsmiths will first look.

      I have the same thing with my Ruger Mark IV no matter HOW CLEAN IT IS, it JAMS over 10% of the time. I have 6 magazines it will JAM 5 out of 6 go rounds. That is 60 ROUNDS with 5 or MORE jams. I am FANATIC about CLEANING and LUBE, but it still FAILS. It makes NO DIFFERENCE what brand ammo I use. There is ONE BRAND called "Brazer Brass" 11 LONG RIFLE, I NEVER run it in a semi-auto as it is the DIRTIEST ammo I ever saw. I shot it up with my revolvers and never bought any more. It was POWERFUL and almost NEVER misfired, I had a CASE of it, 5,000 rounds. Once it was gone I NEVER bought any more. The 40 Caliber Brazer Bras is OK, but the BB 22 LR sucks it is so dirty. The DIRT has to be scraped off, it is the most difficult of all gun powder residue I have EVER SEEN!!! It LOOKS LIKE WELD SPLATTER. I am going to send my Ruger Mark IV back to them, I believe something is WRONG with it. BB

    I have a couple ruger mark 1s and a ruger mark 2. All of them work great. Yes I get the occasional misfire or stove, but that’s either a very dirty gun or ammo issue. I bought a ruger mark 4. Very first shot was a failure to fire. Brand new gun. Proceeded to fire 300 rounds, all kinds of different ammo, even my go to, CCI mini mags. Of all the magazines, only was able to fire 3 all the way through. The rest were failure to fire at least two cartridges. Figured out the issue, the bolt wouldn’t go into battery, and as the hammer falls, it would push the bolt home. Sometime fire the cartridge, sometimes not. Had at least one out of battery ignition. Very sad at the quality of Rugers made at the Prescott AZ factory. Sent the gun back, still haven’t heard back from Ruger.😢 Silence.

      Same issues with my m4.. and after researching online Ruger forums it’s been vindicated its a quality control issue with Ruger.. rough edges on bolt face, magazines need tuning.. in other words gritty, rough edges on thumb stub raceway on mag and mag feed lips rough edges as well. I’m an amateur Gunsmith, with countless hours working on pistols.. you should not have to put time and money in a gun to make it Reliable… spend $ on making it more accurate.. sure! RUGER IS VERY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM.. hopefully they will fix it..

      Yes they did. I’m a shade tree gunsmith myself. I figured out what the problem was, the barrel was clocked wrong in the receiver. I could make it work but let Ruger handle it. They were nice, sent a return label, notified me it could not be safely fixed. Sent me a new gun. But I had to accept it like a new purchase, so had to pay the $40 transfer fee/4473 again at my FFLs business. It should never have left the factory, I guess they no longer test fire before shipping. Bill Ruger would never let something like that happen.

    Great video! My mark ii jams on the second or third round fired. Regardless of magazine and ammo, or how clean it is. The round that jams is wedge in the chamber to where I have to use a wooden dowel to push it out. Do you have any ideas?

      I have the idea this only happens to me after 100-200 rounds without cleaning in between. Seems the tolerances are so small that the slightest fouling creates issues loading the bullet into the chamber.

    What do you do with a brand new Mk.III 22/45 that fails to eject 3 to 4 times per magazine? The ammo used is 40gr copper plated round nose CCI 22LR. So far I've tried removing the LCI and installed a TandemKross extractor. I've also "tuned" the magazines as per TK's video here on YT. None of these have improved the situation one bit.

      +Ian Aintsaying I'd check the bolt and look for any drag marks, then would look at the case to extractor fit (and angle) using either a dummy round or spent casing. Using a dummy round, I'd also check to see how tight the chamber is. If nothing jumps out at you, I'd send it into Ruger for inspection. I've never had that many FTE's on any of the MK series of pistols.

    So mine mark 3 22/45 was failure to feed .. Was dead ending on the bullet at the beginning of the feed ramp ... Didn't matter if round nose or hollow point ... Replaced factory mags wit Mec- gar mags , didn't fix the problem ... Cleaned the firearm immaculate & lightly oiled friction points ... Ruger did themselves a favor by discontinuing this model , can't even get factory barrels from them anymore for this model ... I fixed the problem though , I bought a Browning Buckmark... Eats any 22's I run through it , cycles flawless, trigger doesn't have a mile of creep in it like the Ruger did ... I should of bought the Browning in the 1st . place ... Even field stripping it is so much easier ... I will say this , both guns are tack drivers on accuracy but when one will not cycle ammunition, it's nothing more than a paper weight or a hammer because a gun that won't cycle like it should it's a useless gun ... Sad to say with with all the videos on here on the problems failure to feed & others that this product was made in the USA ... Kinda embarrassing that they put a failed product out on the market ... Sad

    I just got the SS hunter mk3. I had 1 per mag on a new dry gun. Tomorrow I will know if it is because it was dry. Also I have heard it takes a few rounds to loosen it up some. Then they work fine.

      With time, most likely it will break in and loosen up. Keeping a Ruger MK series lubed is pretty crucial as well. Thanks for watching!

      +Personal Defense and Firearm Education I went to the range after cleaning and oiling it. Ran about 100 rounds. it had a few more hang ups. Then about the 45 to 50rnd mark it started eating everything.

  • @evilcowboy
    @evilcowboy 6 лет назад +1

    Yeah a dirty gun is at least 50% of the time the problem in semi-auto the other 50 is generally the extractor.

    I bought a new MKIV Target and took it to the range. Put about 100 rds of CCI std velocity ammo through it and probably had 15-20 FTF's! All of the FTF rounds were damaged by the bolt - basically it dented the casing and made the ammo useless. I'm very disappointed. Again, this is a brand new pistol so dirt had nothing to do with it. I've searched various forums etc. to see if others have experienced this problem but the MKIV model is so new that there isn't a lot of info out there. I wanted to ask if anyone had thoughts about what might cause this problem. I have some higher velocity ammo, but haven't tried it yet. I'm wondering if the 1040 fps CCI stuff I was using doesn't have enough oomph to cycle the gun properly???

    • @personaldefenseandfirearme1046
      @personaldefenseandfirearme1046  7 лет назад

      That is a lot of failures to fire at 15-20%. So far I haven't heard of a similar issue with the MKIV. Hopefully soemone will chime in if they've had a similar experience. I'd being calling Ruger and ask them about it. Thanks for watching!

    • @boutique53
      @boutique53 7 лет назад

      I went to the range the other day with the MKIV. Only had time to run 40 rds. through it, but I used some of my Stinger ammo that has a higher velocity and it worked fine. No FTF's at all. I really think that the 1040 fps CCI doesn't have enough power to cycle the bolt completely. You can hear and feel the difference between the two when firing. Will be headed to the range again in a couple of days and will test my theory more thoroughly. If true, the 1040 stuff will be relegated to my old .22 pump rifle.
