Ruger SR22 Won't Feed or Eject? Here's Why!!!

  • I recently picked up a 5 year old SR22 with about 500 rounds through it, and my first time out had some issues that I was able to fix at the range. I had failures to feed, and failures to eject with all of the ammo I was testing until I figured out it was the way I was gripping the pistol. With a recoil spring as light as this pistol has, it doesn't take much to slow down the slide, and reduce the full travel. Plus some ammo testing to see what works and what doesn't with this pistol, after I sorted out the problem. The gun is really fun to shoot once I fixed MY problem!!

    we were very clearly and bluntly told in army basic training in 1972 to keep fingers away from a semiauto pistol’s slide, period. clearly and bluntly, lesson learned then.

      I think the guns are fine with the right ammo and grip. Have you had the rear sight come loose yet? Many of them do, they are only plastic.

      Good point! Any added resistance to the springs will cause problems for sure. I have been to a lot of matches where people have malfunctions with rimfire pistols and rifles and it's usually because of a dirty gun.

      Sean, some guns may have issues, but mine was operator error. I have 2XL size hands and was all over the slide, slowing it down. Not a problem with centerfire because the recoil springs are much more powerful, and the cartridge itself has much more recoil energy.

    I know another way to get it to act up even with that aguila. Load ten in the magazine. Then release the slide release button. It'll load the first one into the chamber, then it'll take that second round in the magazine and point it downwards. You'll get a failure to feed on that second round. If you load that first round by pulling back on the slide your second round hiccup will go away.

    • @CompShooter54
      @CompShooter54  3 года назад

    Wish I would have found this video a few months ago, used an SR22 for qualifying and it did the same thing. Fire once, Click and found the prior shell didn’t eject. It was my father in laws gun so I thought I somehow broke it, felt terrible. A few weeks later I spoke to him and he couldn’t figure out why it failed on me. I now know why... I use the same style grip with a lite load and must have been affecting the slide action. Thanks

      Glad it helped. A lot of guns get a bad reputation when it is either operator error, ammo selection, or not cleaning. I ran a club Steel Challenge shoot a few weeks ago for .22 only, and out of 13 pistol shooters, 10 had problems with reliability from either ammo selection or guns not cleaned. One was using an SR22 and when I talked to him about his grip, the problems went away.

    I upgrade to an aftermarket barrel and had no feeding problems after that but now I also keep the gun completely oiled down and you also have to consider 22 rounds are a dirty cartage and you are better off with a 22 revolver cause you willn't have any jam problems.

    • @CompShooter54
      @CompShooter54  Год назад

      They are dirty, some more than others. I recently shot 200 rounds of Aguila Super Extra 38 gr HP, and the bolt face and chamber area were the blackest I have ever seen it. My practice ammo is Federal Auto match and I find it pretty clean. I'm talking about my 10/22 that I use in competition. • @CompShooter54
      @CompShooter54  Год назад

      Good point. Some oil do harden or get gummy over time, even WD-40. I also have winter and summer oils for that reason. Whenever I get a new oil I put it in the fridge and freezer to see how it flows in cold weather. I have a 1911 .45 that was hand fitted and the oil that I use in the summer will not work in the winter, it stops the slide from getting enough velocity. If you saw any of my Steel Challenge videos you'll see that I use a 10-22. Even with lighter oil at 30 degrees F it will sometime not work. So I put a battery powered hand warmer in the gun case with it between stages to keep it warm. It's between 45 and 90 minutes between stages and no more cold related malfunctions. I pretty much use Marvel Mystery Oil all the time now and hardly have a problem. Plus it smells really good! Glad you found the problem and it wasn't the gun.

      Moe, It was built by Don Hamilton from Marshfield, MA back in 1987. He was on 2 Olympic teams and holds many Camp Perry records. The gun is still tight as a drum and can put 'em all in one hole at 50' (I can't, but the gun can!). If you are from MA or anywhere close you would have heard of him. He was a fantastic gunsmith, but passed away several years ago. His guns still get a good price on the used market.

      Thanks for commenting. Agreed! Not something you want to intentionally. Problem is, with the internet telling everyone the PROPER way to grip a pistol - support hand at 45 degrees, thumbs high and pointing forward, squeeze until your eyeballs pop out - riding the slide can happen, but It's not usually noticed because with a more robust cartridge such as a 9mm or .45 it goes undetected. With the wimpy cartridge and recoil spring on a .22, it is really noticed.

      Thanks for the comment. If you saw my video on the Ruger 1022 you can see that I built 2 rifles, both actions are about 40 years old with thousands of rounds through each. Both are built with Tactical Solutions, both have all the same mods. The white one feeds and shoots anything. With about 5,000 rounds through it after I built it, I have only had 2 misfires during a match, one with CCI Std Vel, the other with older CMP ammo. Never had a feed or eject issue with any ammo on the planet, including Aguila. Since CCI has dried up I am now using Aguila as my match ammo, both standard and high vel. The other gun is a finicky B#$CH and doesn't like much of anything. I cannot rely on it for a match yet, but seems to only like high vel stuff. I guess that's half the fun is finding out what works and what doesn't.
