  • Ruger Mark III detailed solutions for when things keep on going wrong. Ruger MK III Standard .22LR pistol is notoriously known for its disassembly and reassembly challenges. This video is an update on an earlier review of the Mark III, taking a more detailed look at the issues that often plague owners and gunsmiths alike especially when it comes to the Mark III’s reassembly. A detailed description of the mechanics involved is included with the understanding that if the owner understands what is going on during the process, he’ll have better chance at solving any problems that might arise during disassembly and reassembly.

Gob bless you, friend! This is the only tutorial that explains 'why' and not just 'what'. I've been trying to reassemble for over 3hours. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you so much! I spent four times as much time trying to disassemble clean and reassemble my pistol as I have shooting it. I’ve had it for years and you helped me fix it.

It is unbelievable that it took Ruger until the Fourth gen. to fix this issue. It is also amazing that people still bought them.
I am hoping to get my hands on the MK 4 :)

Without a doubt, the takedown is the pits, but otherwise the Mark III is an excellent 22 pistol in terms of quality, fit, finish, reliability and construction. It's also a very accurate pistol, although there are many who have concluded that the takedown process alone just made the gun not worth it. That it took so long for the Mark IV solution is a shame, but at least we have it. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Appreciate the video. Not sure i you're ever heard of it... but most people recommend replacing the magazine safety with the bushing (for like $10), so you can skip having to put the magazine in and out all the time (it removes the magazine safety and the need to have a magazine in to pull the trigger). It's a worthwhile upgrade. I really like the MKIV, because they made the field stripping quicker and easier... but in the process, they made actual assembly and disassembly much more difficult. It's a much more complicated gun than the MKIII.
(Also, this video doesn't show how to disassemble or assemble the gun. It only shows field stripping. Disassembly/Assembly refers to actually disassembling and assembling the parts. I only mention it, because I try to find actual disassembly/assembly videos, but it's sometimes extremely hard to find them, because 100s of people all upload field stripping videos and label them disassembly/assembly videos... (without mentioning field stripping at all, so I can't omit search words)... which means I have to look through dozens or even 100s of field stripping videos to find an actual disassembly/assembly video. I hope you forgive the rant. I'm just trying to explain the problem that myself and many others have. I don't mean any disrespect or anything. (Some people apply anger or other emotions when there really isn't any... and any criticism is always assumed to be mean or hateful, even when the opposite is true).

Of course you are technically correct about field stripping. However, note that even the Ruger manual for the Mark III refers to "Disassembly" (page 22) and "Reassembly" (page 23). Also, in an effort to provide maximum visibility, the average person seeking a solution would more likely seek information on "Disassembly & Reassembly" which is why I labeled it as such. But I do understand your frustration when searching for "Complete Disassembly". By the way, try using "Complete Disassembly" in your next search. I find it yields better results. Nice video. Well explained tutorial. I've built many semi custom and full custom MKII and MK III builds. Many times the receivers require some fitting. As is the case with the mainspring assembly unit. The important thing like was mentioned is to be mindful of the overlap of the receiver on the frame.

Watched a different video took me 5 hours. I had to point the gun up to get it back together, now I can do it quick.
    Grandpas gun was never cleaned.
works great but it’s a little hard to get all of that gun powder off. There is an obnoxious amount I have not got to in the Handel

    Install mag.
    Pull trigger to decock.
    Remove mag.
Pull pin on rear of pistol.
Lift barrel and bolt from pistol and note hammer posion, almost straight up, but to the rear a little.
    Remove bolt from barrel.
Clean and reassemble in reverse order.
This is much eaiser than going through mag install/remove/install........

I was one of those unfortunate people who never had any problems ever, reassembling an early Mk 1-3 Ruger pistol. I used to LOVE lording it over others at home and at the gun ranges. Until of course, the Obvious consequence. So I got infected by the attitude that Ruger Mk pistols were an Intelligence Test. Friends, Family, I would get phone calls after dark, people would STRUGGLE for HOURS failing to perform what to me was this SIMPLE thing. And in their inept tiny little lizard brains, I was the Final Solution. I had enough. The last time one of my friends called, I told them - "You have proven that you are NOT smart enough to own guns! You should sell all your guns now and perhaps get into basket weaving, or gardening!"
Needless to say, That did not go over well. When the Mk IV came out, I had mixed feelings about it. 1: why didn't they come out with this 40 years ago? And 2: Thank GOD, it's about time...
So yeah, I now had an excuse to buy every model of Mk .22's again!
    So yeah. Mixed feelings...
Somewhere, I once made a Video of reassembling a Mk II completely disassembled, in like 24 seconds. I know I posted it on some gun board way back in the early 2000's. I'm pretty sure it's long gone by now...

The MKIII really is a pain in the A$$ to reassemble. I usually get to the final step to find that the bolt won't slide back more than a 1/4". It takes multiple attempts to get the final housing aligned correctly. UGH! Thanks to Ruger for the unnecessary frustration.
