Spiritually, it's as if David Gilmour's iconic guitar solo, which builds in intensity, is coaxing something "light" to come out of the "dark." The "light" is the white orb (which we later find out is a flower bulb) brightly shining over the audience. Toward the end of the solo, Gilmour hits the high notes on the guitar, and the flower bulb transcends (blooms) into a lotus flower, which has deep spiritual meaning in many cultures. Absolutely, this is beautifully done. My analysis only -- others may construe the meaning differently.

I have seen Pink Floyd Live 4 times… I saw this same show in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap froged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION. Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all.

The first time Pink Floyd ever walked into a studio, a label exec handed them a book titled "The Correct Way to Make a Successful Rock and Roll Song."
The band accepted it, and flipped to a few random pages.
They then snickered, threw that book out the window, and set to work reinventing Rock music from the ground up.

Cool reaction mate, this is regarded as the best live guitar solo ever, but obviously is subjective. Pink Floyd have inspired so many artists from different genres including hard rock/metal. Artists like Marylyn Manson, Nightwish, Dream Theatre, Korn , Slipknot , Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam etc all cite Floyd as an influence.
This whole concert is legendary, but keep in mind they are mainly an album band . They usually have a concept or theme and the songs bleed into each other so are meant to be listened to as a whole. Maybe try Sorrow from the same concert next. Peace

They have been since their start cutting edge for their live shows. I was lucky to see them live 2x. Unlike any other live performance. For this show, I believe the cost for the stage show was 25 million.

Excellent choice to review. As I understand it, the song can be understood on two levels. First, bassist and primary songwriter Roger Waters' real life provided the two actual situations described in the lyrics. As a child, he got sick, and his hands swelled up (like balloons). Then later, while on tour with Floyd in Philadelphia in the seventies, he became sick one night before a concert. The story goes, the manager or promoter called in a doctor, who gave him a shot of something, perhaps a stimulant, so he could go out and play that night. Roger had a bad reaction, and has said he almost couldn't lift his arms while onstage.
However, the song means something entirely different. It's a pivotal point in the story told through the double album "The Wall". "The Wall" is the story of a young lad named Pink Floyd, who wants to grow up and become a famous rock star. Through the album he achieves that success. But he's walled away everyone who cared for him, was willing to tell him he was making a mistake, and has instead surrounded himself with sycophants and greedy people who just want to use him. He comes to hate his life, and is doing drugs to numb the pain (hence the title, "Comfortably Numb").
As the song starts, Pink is out of it before a concert, a doc is brought in, and he gives Pink a shot so he can get up there and make everybody their money. Nobody cares about Pink; he's just the cash cow. During the first solo, Pink is still drugged, and that solo is all bliss and joy. But by the time of that second solo, he's now 'sobered up', and has to face his miserable life. He hates it, and musically you can feel Pink's pain, anguish, and self-loathing in this solo.
One last note; Most of Pink Floyd's albums were designed as essentially one 'work' per side. You may have noticed that Floyd's songs seem to start and end abruptly. It's because on the original albums, the songs flowed one to another, and each one into the next. So if you find you like Floyd, try listening to an entire albums side. You'll see what I mean.

There can be no good without bad and there can be no joy without pain. For everything there is an opposite. White black, up down, happy sad, joy pain. You can hide from reality but it doesn't change the reality. One should learn to live with reality, hard as may be to remain sane. If you lose grip of reality then your sanity will be next.

  • @mikewatts867

Your comment about the quality of live performance is interesting, because bands like Pink Floyd made quite a bit of their money from album sales. And they still put the time in to perfect their live stage craft. Bands now make hardly anything from album sales. They make most of their money from live shows. I mean bands like Pink Floyd made massive amounts of money from shows like this, but they didn’t need to to still get by as a band. It makes you wonder why bands today aren’t somehow not putting more time into it. And I’m not talking about the visual experience that Pink Floyd could afford to do that less known bands can’t. But just the stage presence and quality of the performance.

No offense but it’s sacrilege to pause during a David Gilmour guitar solo; especially that one!
David Gilmour is the type of guitarist that doesn’t need crazy fast riffs to be a legend. He can make the guitar sing and speak to your soul. It’s truly mesmerizing.
I’m a true metal head but Pink Floyd is my favorite band. David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist and Comfortably Numb is my favorite song.
I’ve seen them live twice. Once in 1988 and once in 1995 for this Pulse tour; with VIP floor seats. Best concert of my life.
All of the concerts during the pulse tour had to be held in outdoor venues because of the lasers. It was incredible!
Fun fact: David Gilmour was famous for playing an all black Stratocaster. A few years back David auctioned off a lot of his guitars and the black strat was one of them. It went for over $3million (US).

If you want to go down the Pink Floyd rabbit hole, may I suggest you first listen to the studio version and then the live version. Pink Floyd is one of those rare bands that in most cases sound better live than in studio. I would suggest that you listen to The Dark Side Of The Moon album...it will literally change your life. Do side A and then side B. Always try to have the lyrics drawn up as they are always very deep and meaningful. Also, no need to pause...you won't have copyright problems with Pink Floyd. The entire Pulse concert is mind blowing so other tracks to check out from this concert is Coming Back To Life, Sorrow, High Hopes, Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Run Like Hell, etc. Groete vannie Kaap.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"...
I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.
I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.
All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. We walked out saying.... What did we just witness? That was out of this world incredible. The Red Fender Stratocaster he used for this concert in the Guitar Collector World is ....PRICELESS

All the great bands are much better experienced live. They are using drugs and other examples to explain that as we age we lose our dreams. We give up on making things better and just become comfortably numb. Roger will always give bull crap explanations. He is too withdrawn to expose the truth. That has made him one of the best song writers that ever existed at making us look inward and understand ourselves better.
