I was there the night they recorded this and you can't understand how completely overwhelming it was. It was so loud that every note of Gilmour's guitar rang through your whole body and the mirror ball was so bright you were blinded. You couldn't hear anything, couldn't feel anything except what the Floyd wanted you to hear and feel. It was like flying through space, held up on the music. We were in tears when the solo kicked in, men and women alike. And when the crowd left Earls Court, it was eerily silent. We were standing on the tube platform and hardly anyone could speak. We were all just looking at each other with that "WTF just happened" look in our eyes. It was a truly religious experience.

I had the chance to see this show two nights in a row during their visit to the Olympic Stadium in Montreal on May 23 and 24, 1994.
As you say, at the end of the show, the crowd seemed oddly quiet and calm.
Since I worked night shifts, I had to go to work after the show, and the buddies at work looked at me like I was high on drugs, yet I hadn't taken anything.
With Pink Floyd, no need for drugs to get high, their music is more than enough and in addition, there is no danger of overdose.
But seeing them perform can be addictive, hence the reason for seeing this show twice.

it also regularly comes in lower 🤣 I like your choice of favourite guitarist but I take all of the poll things and lists etc with a grain of salt as music is personal not a popularity contest. I anyway cannot compare this to other great solos I love from other genres of music, and I love this, although I actually feel the song drags a bit at times in this live version but the ending solo is awesome. Is it the greatest? does it matter? I am pretty sure David (Gilmour) doesn't care. David comes in my big 3 in guitarists but the other 2 are very different and closer to each other than him. Floyd are unique in their sound and Gilmour is a very large part of that sound so he deserves all the accolades he gets but I don't think that ranking lists do any of the greatest any service in the end. Popularity polls are hopeless just look at how badly Rolling Stone magazine did with their "Greatest Singers of All Time" ranking recently...

The best solo ever. I am in love with guitars and heard so many great solos but this has it all. Warm, cold, sweet, bitter, alive, dead. I always played this song in the summer after a hard day work, drinking a cold beer at my balcony and listen to this song in a loop. The lyrics represent for me the society we are living in. Nightwish made a song called 'Noise" and the video clip show what I think of when I hear this song. Everybody's screaming, everybody wants everything but because all goes at the same time we do not have attention for each other and are more in our selfish world (your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying). Besides that everybody wants to be healthy, good looking, fit without taking care of your inner self. In the end we need to fix it with some drugs and we go on and on. I love this song deeply and feeling so bad never seeing them live. Roger Waters will be playing here in the summer but I am more a Gilmours man. Great voice and guitar treating as no one else.

Three stages leapfrogged around North America and Europe, each 180 feet (55 m) long and featuring a 130-foot (40 m) arch resembling the Hollywood Bowl venue. All in all, the tour required 700 tons of steel carried by 53 articulated trucks, a crew of 161 people and an initial investment of US$4 million plus US$25 million of running costs just to stage. This tour played to 5.5 million people in 68 cities and grossed US$250 million dollars.

It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap froged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION. Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all. When the “Disco Ball’ was uncovered and the lights hit it….. WHAT IS HAPPENING was what I said….The entire crowd was held in a trace and our minds totally blown by what we witnessed.

There are many reasons why someone might be speechless in front of a masterpiece. One reason could be that the person is so moved or impacted by the work of art that they are unable to find the words to describe their emotions or thoughts. Another reason could be that the person is in awe of the skill or talent that went into creating the masterpiece, and they are unable to fully comprehend or articulate their admiration. It is also possible that the person is simply overwhelmed by the beauty or power of the work of art, and they are at a loss for words in the face of such greatness. In any case, being speechless in front of a masterpiece is a common and understandable reaction to something that is truly extraordinary or moving.

A Pink Floyd song is not about «melody» or rimes as much as about emotions (normally dark emotions like despair, sadness, lonlyness, etc)
The big disco ball is highly symbolic.
First of all, it wasn't seen until the lights spotted it. It was simply not there! Hidden in a box in the ceilling. So when it got lit, you can understand why the audience went wild.
And then, when it opened up and showed the shining diamond that's inside, a direct reference to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (which refer to Syd Barrett), the fans understood!
    Genius!

I was lucky enough to be at Earls Court in London in October 1994 for the Pulse Tour concert which you've just reacted to, I was sitting in the balcony directly opposite the giant mirror ball which came down from the ceiling whilst they were playing Comfortably Numb..!! On the left hand side looking towards the stage and when Gilmour went into the solo for literally 6/7mins long and with the lights, lasers and the Mirror Ball opening up with lazers directly onto the mirror ball whilst it was spinning and opening up was absolutely sensational, words dont do it justice to explain the situation and visuals and the guitar solo, nearly 30years later it still sends shivers down my spine every time I remember it or watch it again..!! And the in the 1st set they played Dark Side of The Moon from start to finish and then in set 2 they played an hour and a half of all their classics, then finished the encore with Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb and ended with Run Like Hell with pyrotechnics and explosions and the giant circular screen exploded at the very end of the concert to finish 2hrs39mins off of a mind-blowing concert..!! Which goes down as the GREATEST CONCERT OF ALL TIME

I hear it daily and it never gets old it's timeless. Oh by the way that Google 5hing you said I did it it's there. I loved your reaction it's very honest not like some channels. Happy new year guy's ....

If memory serves me correctly this came out in 1979 on their "The Wall" album.
Pink Floyd is truly a visual band, and have always been.
They were one of, if not the only, bands to incorporate lasers during their shows as far back as the early seventies.
Been listening to them for 50 years now.

thank you so much for your genuine reactions - you guys are so cool. Yes I was lucky enough to have been there for this concert. I can't believe it was nearly thirty years ago. The whole thing was incredible but, wow, the mirrorball (a very simple thing amongst all the lasers etc) that came in towards the end and then how it opened up etc!!! It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen (until my daughter was born). Their ability to make you feel you are the only one there - and yet at the same time aware that there are thousands and thousands of individuals all there at the same time collectively feeling the same things that you are feeling, is truly remarkable. I have been to many, many concerts (especially when I was living in London) but this is in my all time top five!!!! Rock on!!

do the studio version of 'mother' from pink floyd, BUT THEN DO THE 1980 VERSION AFTER THAT AND YOU WILL ENJOY it better also david does a double solo in the live version which sets it apart from the studio version

When you get THAT kind of emotional reaction from watching the band on a small screen and through headphones, IMAGINE what it was like to be THERE that night!!
Surrounded by the amazing clarity of the sound. . . Sound that can punch you in the chest and make your bones vibrate. .
Along with thousands and thousands of people around you, and they are all TRANSPORTED by the music, the same as you are. . .
The lights. . the movement. . . Overloading all your senses. . . GLORIOUS!
It would have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience that would have been amazing. .
Some guitarists can play a milion notes a minute and are fantastic. . David Gilmour can play ONE note and creep into your soul with it. . .

I was fortunate enough to be at that concert. I've followed pink Floyd since listening to their 1st album, piper at the gates of dawn. I was at their dark side of the moon concert in the 70's at Manchester free trade Hall when a power cut ended the show, that's when we had power cuts and 3 working day weeks. We did see the full re-scheduled concert a few weeks after.

Wonderful lyrics about the night Roger was too sick to perform so a doctor was called to the venue to treat him.
The doctor gave him a stimulant that allowed him to function in a state of total numbness ..... and he can not remember actually playing.
The music of the drums and bass melding with the organs, synthesisers etc create the atmosphere.
French horns make you feel mellow and spaced out mentally.
For Gilmore’s vocals the horns are replaced by violins , giving a different feeling and vibe to YOUR numbness.
Then Gilmore’s guitar reinforces everything you are feeling..... it speaks to you.
David Gilmore speaks to you through his guitar.
That is the Pink Floyd sound.
Brilliant, great and clever lyrics reinforced by music that enters your soul and speaks to you directly..... without words.

It taps into pain of human experience and the attempts at connection and compassion yet disturbing like there’s no cure and the guitar takes over and communicates in a visceral transcendence of human experience like no words ever could. Sheer GENIUS

I was at one of the concerts of this tour....still have the ticket stub and concert shirt. I went to the show in Vancouver, Canada in June of 1994 and the show was exactly like the PULSE video. It was by far the most amazing concert I ever saw, and I've gone to concerts since 1970 and seen all the major groups. The concert tour was the division bell tour. The entire show should be on your list!

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"...
I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. Hard to explain how awesome that moment was in my life. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.
I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.
All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. We walked out saying.... What did we just witness? That was out of this world incredible. The Red Fender Stratocaster he used for this concert in the Guitar Collector World is ....PRICELESS
