Prost thirteen on the grid won the race, A Nannini 14th on the grid, 4th at the end of the race with his V8 Ford and his incredible "no angle rear wing". It was the day of the seventh row ! Whatever, races were more interesting because the fastest cars on one lap was not necessarily the best on race and there was a great gap to set up the car for qualifying and for racing too. Prost was surely not the fastest driver but the best to adjust his car for the race, even Senna said it when he came to Mc Laren in 1988, he recognized learn a lot during this season before the troubles between them in 1989. For young people, i think it's important to remember that Prost and Senna were very good teammates at the beginning
People usually forgot about Prost because he was not a flashy driver, or the fastest on raw speed. But in race his overall driving package was unmatched, only Senna was at his level. Prost was really good at going at the speed necessary just enough to get the desired position that he think could achieve, he was a master of tire usage. He was not scared of just being satisfied with a third position if it was the maximum that he could get. He took the championship as a whole and not race by race. That's why he was so good. That's why he is the only driver that matched Senna on a full season. Each driver having very different qualities
Amazing race. Remember it well. Shame about the camera director though. They had an awful reputation in this race at constantly missing things and focussing on something totally random. For example, lap 1 we don't even see the leaders into the first corner, we get Michele Alboreto's camera car at the back of the field for the whole lap. I remember James Hunt on BBC was going bonkers at this 😆
1:31:52 shows how superior Honda engines were in the McLarens, Berger had a bad exit, Mansell was next to him and he still pulled away. Everyone talks about Senna at McLaren, but without Honda things would've been much different.
Piquet for some reason had fantastic starts in Mexico. It is quite a dusty piece of track , but he usually from 86 , 87 , 88 and here in 90 started surprisingly well . Here he had a fantastic race, dicing with top teams . It is quite a show of bias, how much British media tried to bury him, reputation wise. From the frist moment he stepped into a Benneton and ran a fast session in the wet in Phoenix , it was evident how much those Lotuses in previous years were shitty cars . If I remember he outqualified Nanninin by 2 scs in his first qualy session .
@@theiceman7590 as said , it is bias when someone claims he was lucky or something . For most of his career he ran unreliable cars. It is a testament to his driving quality that he won three WDC and due to 2 engine failures lost another two.. People mix his persona and his driving .
"Give all the credit in the world to Gerhard Berger, he came from 12th to almost second place!" ...but no credit to Prost, who started thirteenth and...oh...won the race !? This US announcer is a joke.
one good thing in todays formula is this ; cars safetyness is very good that old era formula 1 was alot more dangerous to compare to this days formula1 but i like more old era formula 1 because it was more sport.

Epic years! Prost was pure genius, Mansell was the hearted Lion, Piquet was the natural talent, and senna... senna, the most overrated driver on planet earth...
but senna knew when to win and how to win and was ready to use a little dirty tactiques but the true masters like senna and Michael schumacher were such like ones + todays master driver Max verstappen who are able to use all tricks to get the win so i definetely think so these 3 names are all the time best drivers + adding Hamilton and natural talent Piquet and very old era 1960s era Juan manuel Fangio. Mika häkkinen was very good too, but usually technical problems was mikas biggest problems. Underrated top driver english formula driver Damon hill, who make the succees in short era and truly challenged impressively M.Schumacher and i remember 2 head momentums between Schumi and D.hill and the first head meeting where Schumacher used a dirty tactic against D.Hill and thats why Schumi won the champion title i remember so and in next season Damon hill did a payback when he got off Schumacher in man vs man battle and D.Hill won the champion title. Tough to rank Damon hill because of his very very short prime.
One of his best victories .. 13 to 1... And Senna out of the points .. I was watching it during the original GP and I was delighted! ❤
I had this on tape with commercials. No clue where it is now. Thanks this is a great race.
If i have to choose one race to explain one driver, Prost should have Mexico 90 and Senna Donington 1993.

1991 too
Honestly Piquet brings it upon himself with his antics

F1 - cool. I've watched some f1 races.
Why is Mansell carrying an extra lower wing ? (Yellow) Prost doesnt have it.
Interesting to hear the US commentary.
You got to be kidding, this guy is a catastrophe!
@@cedericocosantorini8013 How? and compared to whom?
