Seeing all of the wheels flying around at the start made me Google 'When were F1 wheel tethers introduced?' It was funny to see the answer: "Wheel tethers were introduced in 1999 to prevent wheels from flying off during accidents and endangering all those on track. It was prompted by the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix where a crash involving much of the grid resulted in several wheels becoming detached."
Yeah not surprised. I think anyone seeing that at the time would be thinking "We've got to find some way to stop these wheels flying all over the place".
This race was pure madness. I saw this race on F1TV to replace the disasterous "race" from 2021, and it was worth replacing the disaster from 2021 with an all time classic like Belgium 1998. That was what really got me into Formula 1 as an American, the sound of the V10 engines, and the unpredictable of underdog teams winning with underdog drivers or even the worst car aerodynamically and in power scores points because everybody else got knocked out one way or another. Quite astonishing how no-one was injured including spectators and stewards and also how Ralf Schumacher in the yellow Jordan parked behind the stricken Coulthard and somehow missed being hit and then carried on.
It was nothing short of a miracle that Ralf got out of that undamaged, the Jordan and Williams teams were the only teams where both cars escaped damage from that first start. As well as Ralf's miracle, Esteban Tuero deserves a shoutout since he started in last place and also got through undamaged, the only driver from the back-half of the grid to do so...
@@killakanzgaming Unfortunately compared to Tuero, it wasn't the case of Rosset going full throttle towards the wreckage having a good distance from the back to brake!
I have the Speedvision broadcast somewhere.... This was a great race. Was cold and cloudy in the States at the time of the race, matched the vibe. Cool seeing all the drivers hanging out before track was ready.
I remember it well. Coulthard got his left rear on the drain. You can see him headed for it just before the spray obscures the view. My favourite moment of the first start was Ralf seeing the chaos and thinking "🤔 hmm, maybe I'll just pull over".
I remember watching this LIVE back then Schumacher was 3-4 sec / lap faster than anybody and i clearly remember i was thinking to myself "whats the hurry he wants to beat everybody by a lap?" unfortonatley he crashed which more or less ended his 1998 campaing..as a 15y kid i was emotionaly damaged😮😅
The first lap crash was really scary with all these pieces of carbon and wheels flying all over the place in an era with no halo. And that wheel flying at 0:59 was very close to the spectators
Fantastic , thanks for the memories , my uncle was at the race , and was wondering what was going on after the crash at the start. This was well pre smartphones , he actually had a mobile phone which was quite rare at the time and called my dad who was watching the race on tv with me to get updates on what was going on
I remember my dad screaming that Sunday afternoon: “Son! Come take a look at this crash!” I was 5 years old at the time. Will never forget this epic race.
You had to recreate the graphics (logos, fonts, all with subtle animations), pitstop graphics, you had to look up all statistics ("last 5 races", "classic Spa", "fastest lap"), you had to decide when to show what on screen ("join the conversation", "race control"). Of course you had to guess the gap between drivers, guess the fastest lap time, guess the order of drivers, you could've added "box, box", but you did an awesome job! 2:16:03 _insert generic V10 sounds_
One of, if not, my favourite races of all time! Race that had everything! Rain, crashes, overtakes and (almost) fights in the pit lane! Thanks so much for uploading this - great to see this with the modern F1 Graphics and of course, the late, great Murray Walker alongside Martin Brundle 😄
It's so funny looking back (I remember watching this race live) and all the emotion and finger pointing, and seeing drivers running other drivers off the track ... and comparing it to today when it's really not all that different from those perspectives :)
The classic era of F1 when it was still raw and exciting and now over regulated crap like today. Everyone was talking about this race for days after. Now they would not even start this race.
Imagine that I skipped to a random moment in the middle of the video and landed exactly at the legendary quote "anything can happen in Formula 1 and it usually does".
Fabulous watching that again. Thanks for the post. 👍🏻 Love the Murray Walker gaffs. “ they’re all going to score a world championship point” when there’s eight cars on the track 🙄🤣
Wow they change Irvines nose and tires (17 sec) quicker the my espresso machine extracts a shot. What a start, I remember watching this on VHS with my Dad, he would record the whole season.
I was there (14 years of age) , on the track. But at rivage. No screens, no internet. Just 6 cars passing by (including Jos Verstappen with a flat) and then just wait for an hour until the race started again. But the sound of these cars flying past. back then. Going round the track relentless. It was an awesome experience.
Wow, I was only 7 and a half months old when this happened, I was just a little meatball :3 Little did I know that I’d grow up to be a huge F1 fan a few years later
God I remember that terrible crash at the start! I also remember at the time wondering if I'd drive to the supermarket in that weather let alone go racing. I didn't go to the supermarket (I wanted to watch the race ;) Great fun by the way. Well done!
This race was nuts, especially as the injuries were minimal at what is still in my mind the most dangerous track of the season, in the worst weather conditions. Look at what happened a few years ago where the race was abandoned. We were very lucky no-one got seriously hurt or worst. And all with the benefit of the wonderful commentary of the late Murray Walker. Wonderful hearing his voice again.
I was gobsmacked they decided to go for another standing start after the sheer chaos of the first one! quite a difference to the over cautiousness of 2021 (I think they should have raced then and only stopped if there was accidents caused by the poor visibility like Coulthard here😂)
What a epic race to rewatch! The modern graphics are pretty cool, it almost looks natural - even if the race was 25 years ago. Just too bad we dont see the radio text around M. Schumacher's crash....
I’ve only recently become a fan of F1 in the past few years but the sounds of these cars bring me back to my childhood, listening to these screaming v8s on an early Sunday afternoon whilst playing in the front room and mums cooking dinner

51:52 race restart
Please do more full races. This is beyond awesome. Thank you very much!
My favourite moment of the first start was Ralf seeing the chaos and thinking "🤔 hmm, maybe I'll just pull over".
i love the small details the names the race records for drivers all amazing work
I remember watching this LIVE back then Schumacher was 3-4 sec / lap faster than anybody and i clearly remember i was thinking to myself "whats the hurry he wants to beat everybody by a lap?" unfortonatley he crashed which more or less ended his 1998 campaing..as a 15y kid i was emotionaly damaged😮😅
The first lap crash was really scary with all these pieces of carbon and wheels flying all over the place in an era with no halo. And that wheel flying at 0:59 was very close to the spectators
What a 90's episode of Drive to Survive that would be!
Fantastic , thanks for the memories , my uncle was at the race , and was wondering what was going on after the crash at the start. This was well pre smartphones , he actually had a mobile phone which was quite rare at the time and called my dad who was watching the race on tv with me to get updates on what was going on
Beautiful to Hear Murray Walker again! Back when F1 was good!
I remember my dad screaming that Sunday afternoon: “Son! Come take a look at this crash!”
I was 5 years old at the time. Will never forget this epic race.
I did not know I needed this, please keep on doing this :)
Dude...awesome!! I love this, and your sense of humor.
Just amazing...love the concept...love those cars of the era with the modern graphics.....brave lads in the rain...thank you
You had to recreate the graphics (logos, fonts, all with subtle animations), pitstop graphics, you had to look up all statistics ("last 5 races", "classic Spa", "fastest lap"), you had to decide when to show what on screen ("join the conversation", "race control").
The pilots today just whine in this kind of rain, while Schumacher pushed through on three wheels. :D
That was the most furious Schumacher race I ever saw
Murray Walker: Look at him, look at him, look at him!
Yeah, I wish he would've been allowed to kick DC's azz, he really deserved it...
what is he up to ? 😅
Schumacher looking like he activated some of his ancestors 1930s-1940s rage
schumacher is a jewish name, his ancestors would have been on the wrong side of the fence.@@MDE_never_dies
2:35:48 even the engine is happy for hill :)
It's so funny looking back (I remember watching this race live) and all the emotion and finger pointing, and seeing drivers running other drivers off the track ... and comparing it to today when it's really not all that different from those perspectives :)
The Full Race? Please more! ❤
2:30:51 - a rare emotional gesture there from Ron Dennis to Eddie Jordan on the finish. Never seen like in Formula1. Great
The classic era of F1 when it was still raw and exciting and now over regulated crap like today. Everyone was talking about this race for days after. Now they would not even start this race.
Imagine that I skipped to a random moment in the middle of the video and landed exactly at the legendary quote "anything can happen in Formula 1 and it usually does".
Fabulous watching that again. Thanks for the post. 👍🏻
Love the Murray Walker gaffs. “ they’re all going to score a world championship point” when there’s eight cars on the track 🙄🤣
I wished this video had the Italian commentary. That was epic😂

I honestly believe to this day that Michael Schumacher could have done the rest of the race on three wheels and still won. Once his nose was replaced.
Another goofy Schumhead around
Wow they change Irvines nose and tires (17 sec) quicker the my espresso machine extracts a shot. What a start, I remember watching this on VHS with my Dad, he would record the whole season.
Brilliant, thanks for posting.
I was there (14 years of age) , on the track. But at rivage. No screens, no internet. Just 6 cars passing by (including Jos Verstappen with a flat) and then just wait for an hour until the race started again.
But the sound of these cars flying past. back then. Going round the track relentless. It was an awesome experience.
the "join the conversation" graphic killed me 😂
Imagine if Formula 1 today could be even half as good as this!
One of the best things F1 has ever produced and literally the best thing the internet has provided within some time….. 😎👍
this thing deserves more views
The overtake vote graphic when Schumacher crashed into Couldhard 👌
Wow, I was only 7 and a half months old when this happened, I was just a little meatball :3
Little did I know that I’d grow up to be a huge F1 fan a few years later
Im glad Im not the only one saying meatball unironically lmao.
Seeing all those tires flying and no halos scared the shit out of me .
They should have never added halos.
This is SICK
God I remember that terrible crash at the start! I also remember at the time wondering if I'd drive to the supermarket in that weather let alone go racing. I didn't go to the supermarket (I wanted to watch the race ;)
Great fun by the way.
"Oh, that crash hurt and I'm limping/holding my arm. No issues, get me in to the spare"
This is exactly what we needed. Thank you sir.
man these engines just sounds like their absolutely ripping it..i was scared for them in the rain lmao
Incredible that nobody was killed or seriously injured hired in that lap 1 incident
I’ve only recently become a fan of F1 in the past few years but the sounds of these cars bring me back to my childhood, listening to these screaming v8s on an early Sunday afternoon whilst playing in the front room and mums cooking dinner
Missing a couple cylinders there bud!

Ollie Gavin in the Safety car is the highlight for me. I love my Corvette boys.
Great upload, Nowdays most of that would take place behind the safety car.
Ok obsessed with this, appreciate the work!
I never knew I needed this - thank you - awesome stuff.
This was fantastic! Amazing work!!
I was 12 when I watched this and to this day its my best memory of F1.
A monumental day for Jordan, now Aston Martin of course...
This is great! Thank you!
Murray's voice brings back so many memories.
Give me Murray's commentary over modern graphics anyday
This was the first grand prix that I can remember watching.
Mate this is superb
This is what public service is. A remastered 98 Belgian GP. And start to end. 🙏

When F1 was proper. What a race, i remember watching it live. And lets bring back the v10, so much more exciting.
Much delayed re-start was perfect for taking the Samy for a walk🙂
This was the first race I ever watched, not missed one since.
I thought it's just going to be a 2 minute clip but damn it's actually the whole race god daym, my childhood
I think, kind for modern f1 fans.
Besides, present F1 champion's father also races.
as someone who wasn’t even born back then, it’s kinda weird to see verstappen name as a backmarker tbh
@@imoanadz Nobody cares about Cheatin' Crashy!
Jos Verstappen de graveltrappen
Coulthard singlehandedly destroying Ferrari's twice, as if he hadn't caused enough. Schumacher mad berserk is justified.
