30 + entrants, 26 starters, 10 different engines, 2 makes of tyre. F1 was interesting back then.

The results were a lot more predictable though because the gap between Williams, McLaren, Ferrari and Benetton and the midfield was something like 3 seconds a lap

That second half of 91 season the Williams made a huge leap in development and was already the car that dominated 92.

Honda also made a huge leap in horse power and mid range torque mid season. They called it VTEC. Introduced it at Spa. Guess who won.. Not a Williams. McLaren made the chassis 15 kg lighter just before Hungary. Guess who won.. Not a Williams.

@@hungrysurfer9471 As a package the McLaren Honda was the best from the 1991 season. Williams passive car from 1991 was a really good car but the Williams active car from 1992 and 1993 was one of the best cars if you know how to drive those cars. Mansell knew as well as Damon Hill who used to be the tester from the Williams Team back in those days. On the other hand both Patrese and Prost never liked the active car. Too heavy to drive and both Patrese and Prost liked to put their own driving style on each and every corner which was impossible with the active car all the way active suspension and traction control made all the job instead of the driver. And that is why Patrese was faster than Mansell on the passive car from 1991. Patrick Head himself admitted Patrese was faster than Mansell on the passive car. On the active car from 1992 was a complete different scenario for both Mansell and Patrese. Mansell was almost 2 seconds faster than Patrese on a regular bases with the active car from 1992. I strongly suspect on that Williams FW14-B active car Nigel Mansell was unbeatable. No other driver would've beat Mansell driving that same car from 1992. Not Senna nor Prost. No-one. By 1994 with the new regulations the Williams car was a passive car once again like in 1991. Senna was having some problems driving that Williams and that is why the Williams Team offered Riccardo Patrese (who was retired from Formula One for the first time in 1994) to be the official tester of the 1994 Williams car all the way it was pretty much the same car Patrese was faster than Mansell in 1991. Patrese said he wanted the OK from Senna himself. So that tragic weekend at San Marino the Williams Team, Ayrton Senna and Riccardo Patrese reunited and agreed Patrese will be the official tester from the Williams team. Senna was very very happy indeed to have Patrese included as a tester in order to learn much faster the secrets of the car. Patrese was excited as well. A few hours after the meeting Senna was dead and the Williams Team offered the sit to Patrese the next week. It was all very very fast indeed. Riccardo was in shock and finally having deep doubts on the matter Patrese admitted he was very lucky to had the opportunity to drive during so many years in Formula One without never being seriously injured. The dead from Ayrton Senna was shocking for Patrese and finally he refused the offer from the Williams Team knowing very well that decision meant he was out of Formula One for good.

Nice comments. I also stopped watching once Senna had passed but life goes on - started again in 95'. I'm not very technical - more sensual so I enjoyed the sound and power of the V10's till 2006. Interest went downhill really after that...the V8's were just too small ( 2.4's) and of course the turbo's now are just not the answer. Impressive technology etc but F1 should be about the spectacle not just technology - like when you hear a car on the street that makes everyone stop and say what is that?!!

Then it got resurfaced before 1992 race and that was really good. Mexico became a drivers favourite. In the 1960s Stewart Surtes Clarke Hill liked the layout but not lack of safety rails.

Killed the track saddly, that turn was iconic and very fast they even could made it with more angle for cars getting even faster for the straight. The problem is we could see cars getting +380 or even higher speeds at end of the straight with DRS on and following another car but we would see alot more overtakes, those type of tracks allow lots of overtakes

So great to see real men in real V8’s I was a little kid and I loved F1 sadly when they started bringing in hybrid rubbish and the halo I was just disappointed you see the young guys race on motorbikes and they don’t even have a seatbelt 😜 I know Max Verstappen would love to be racing a V8 or V12 great sounding motors with no electric hybrid 💩 where they have to slow down to get more power or whatever it is I don’t really watch it much anymore. I believe they shouldn’t be able to hear from the pit and just use the old boards that way no cheating with swapping places etc. I also hate paddle shifting I think it’s been in F1 for decades but to see the olden day cars with the bloody gear stick on the outside of the car how insane. I think the cars of the 80’s were the best no computers and just full power it was awesome but then we get computers that can control so much. Still the way they drive today and the speeds it’s crazy I think I’d pass out from fear 😂 taking a corner at 100 miles an hour.

Mansell was underrated. Also great to see finnish driver Jyrki JJ järvilehto who was a talent who make succees better off formula 1 when he won one champion title but i dont remember what it was exactly, but in formula 1 he never reachee of his all potential. once he was quite close a true big change to get one of the best top1-5 driver i remember he got injured.
