I’ve seen a few questions about the base model and although I haven’t test it, I’d say its more than enough for most photography work. If I were to make just one upgrade it would be a bigger hard drive
Going into more detail about it on the podcast stalmanpodcast.com

What is most important in terms of upgrading in order of importance for a photographer: 16 - 32gb RAM, 2.3 - 2.4ghz processor, 4 - 8gb graphics card and 1TB - 2TB hard drive?

@@Sojourner88 32gb ram is more important - Lightroom is more ram dependent. 2.3 - 2.4ghz is not dramatic enough to see any noticeable performance difference. 8gb graphic card is irrelevant for photo editing - if you plan on doing very high end video editing like 4k with tons of effects 8gb would be better. 8k video editing would benefit from 8gb graphic memory a lot. HD space is personal preference - I wouldn't go less than 256gb and no more than 1tb for internal hd. External storage is better.

That’s the first video I have seen which I find a bit useful...especially coz of the HDR panorama test...coz as a nature photographer that is genuinely important to me...I have observed most of the good laptop reviews on YT by photographers focus on aspects related to portrait/wedding photography only.....
Next time, can you also please include some quick tests on other features like ... focus stacking .... or stacking 10-15 images/layers like astrophotographers use, to reduce noise...I know, those aren’t actions that you would be using that often.. but it’ll really help other viewers like me...

I used to shoot concerts (photo's not videos) professionally from 2008 ~ 2014 as a living before I moved back into ICT consultancy. Tyler explains that the 2-4 here & there for import/export saved matters. I`m sitting here thinking " Importing in, editing and exporting out" (simplified for example) process isn't the only thing a professional photographer does. A lot of it is still communication/pre-planning/booking things etc. etc. With computers as they are in the last decade, I can write out e-mails, work on planning the next events and book accomondation if travel is required, send out invoices etc. whilst i wait for said export/import task to finish without things coming to a grinding halt (which is sadly a period in computing i've experienced 1st hand being an old geezer) An extra 2-4 here and there in my opinion shouldn't matter as a whole because i`d then spend the extra minutes on the other tasks I have whilst I wait.

Nice video! The 16” has made me glad I held onto my old 13” instead of jumping on one of the models from earlier this year. I’m probably going to wait until next summer to pull the trigger, but the 16” looms powerful and expensive in my future.
As for that perfect build? I’m personally leaning towards 32gb of ram, a 1TB ssd (should still be enough to help me avoid external drives - I don’t work with the high volumes you do), the mid-spec GPU (mainly for a bit of future proofing), and probably the base 6 core CPU.
The ideal photographer’s setup will depend a lot on the individual photographer. But, I think you can at least say for a working photographer, you want your investment to last. So - upgrading RAM is a safe bet, and if possible upgrading storage beyond whatever threshold will keep you from resorting to excessive amounts of external storage.

  • @ricardorgomez

Nice to get a photographer's point of view and test on typical software applications. Great real world test. Especially with Capture One. You don't see that often. Thank you.
I'm glad you spoke about the price/workflow for having a large internal drive. Super convenient, fast and it's always with you. If people spec out what it cost to have a similar sized/speed external drive, they would see that the price isn't nearly as outrageous. 8TB is HUGE and expensive for SSD storage right now. For me, 4TB would work nicely and future-proofs quite a bit.
Lastly, I totally get why Apple didn't include a card reader in the MBP: they break. I have a 2013 15" MBP that I will be upgrading next year and guess what? A spring mechanism is damaged. No big deal but still. Saves Apple from repair costs. I actually prefer no slot. For maintenance, options, simplicity and honestly, looks...
    Keep up the good work.

Hi Tyler, I enjoyed your video and it seems that primarily based on your video and your speed test compared to my older MacBook pro, Ive decided to order the 16" as I am a professional photographer too. However I have a question regarding any issues with smooth image scrolling in lightroom when viewing images or other issues regarding the GPU compatibility you might have come across with your setup. Im in the process of ordering the base i7 model with the 5300 4gb graphics as I have seen some issues with the 5500 8gb version online and I don't know if they have been rectified yet by Adobe, I also saw one issue with the 5500 4gb version that's why I'm opting for the i7 with the 5300 graphics as I have not come across any problems with that particular setup. As you have the machine can you give me any further info on your experience since purchase or with other issues. Much appreciated.

I went this route back in 2018, got a 2017 iMac fully spec’d. I did it because there was a lot of value over getting the MacBook Pro at the time. So far I’m super happy I did. Granted, I can’t take it with me, but if you’re able to do your work at one location it’s a huge value. Mine has the quad core i7 and Radeon Pro 580, and they’re still pretty bonkers fast. I’m pretty sure only with the new 5600M graphics in the latest 16-inch does it beat the 580 in raw performance, so if you get a new iMac right now with the 5700 graphics option (or better yet the 5700XT) you’ll have more than enough power for years to come. iMac is just such a bulletproof machine in my experience, I love it.

What are you going by GPU or CPU. If it's GPU then go with the Zenbook Pro Duo. You have a more powerful GPU.
Apple is ripping you off with the GPU they put in.

2019 13" Macbook Pro (base model) you could upgrade the RAM to 16gigs or 256gigs ssd. I have the base model and I edit 4K video (Fuji XH1) with it. What do you even mean with "higher quality youtube videos"? What program are you editing in? If FCPX definitely get the 2019 13" Macbook Pro, else get the 16" for the dedicated video card and faster CPU.

64GB RAM would be included in a fully-spec 2019 16". Add that into the equation with each having their max RAM offering per each model. Thus price matched...to the dollar.

  • @Tigerex966
    @Tigerex966 4 года назад +2

Good update, but their needs to be much more done to get the macbook pro back to pro.
Under Jobs it had an sd card, ports, and magsafe, and 2 thunderbolt ports, it does not need 4, that other bandwidth needs to be for other ports, not new dongle cable and adapter sales, and a heavier bag.
I am still waiting for the sd card to return, as it will not add any weight.
And the return of at least some of the pre 2016 ports, HDMI, 2 X USBA (the newest type 2 spec), Separate fast charging magsafe, that does not take away a usbc/tb3 port, , and the battery indicator, digital in and out through dual 3.5 mm jacks (for musicians), ethernet, and ir blaster from the 2011-2012 Macbook Pros.
Only having one type of port save Apple a ton in production costs, not to mention the millions they make in required dongles, which is the whole reason usbc exists, it created a need for a whole new profitable market for cables, dongles, and adapters, that do not always work like they are supposed to.
My other wish is for color accurate 4K to edit 4K video, like the imac, and every pro windows 13-17" laptop.
Even at extra cost, just for that option.
HDR support for HDR software and cameras we use.
OLED or mini led XDR technology.
While Apple screen is top notch it is still 2012 technology and ppi, a lot has changed since then.
Touch...Mac OSX should have always had touch/pencil support, and the only reason it does not is the ipad sales would stop in their tracks.
As an artist, editor, musician in logic with it's mixing console, video editing, we know touch can sometimes be more productive then trackpad, or mouse for getting things done right and precisely.
But more than anything, is the ability to upgrade the ram and ssd later as my needs change.
I think Lenovo think pad X1 does the ports and upgradeability best.
At any time you can upgrade the base 16GB to 64GB, and 512GB ssd, to 2X4TB ssd retail which is less than half of apple built to order upgrade prices, and apple keeps your base ram and storage to put in another machine, with the Thinkpad, you can sell it.
Another thing is repairability, Apple is known to fight independent repair at every corner, refusing to sell OEM parts, and designing the keyboard, ssd, ram, wifi, and other things that make repairing them a minimum $1500 board replacement.
And for security when you sell your mac, you cannot keep the ssd, and even with encryption and secure delete, a hacker may recover some of your personal files when you sell your computer.
Having said that, this upgrade is a step in the right direction, and it has class leading speakers and trackpad, a reliable keyboard, better cooling and less thermal throttling for the 8 core, which used to be slower than the 6 core on extended processing, but most of all the finally got rid of the ancient AMD 500 series gpu's, which are as slow as a NVDIA MX250.
Apple must have got a great deal on them, and they were the biggest performance bottle neck, you had to upgrade $$$, to Vega 20 just to get acceptable graphics, the 5500m that apple uses has 2 more cores than it's windows courter part, and the 8GB video memory really helps, it should be comparable to a GTX 1660, but slower than a RTX 2060 with the same 8GB video ram.
I would suggest 2018 and before owners look at a tb3 enclosure and radeon 5500 or so, as an alternative to buying a 16", that way they can get even better performance for cheap, when they are at their desk setup.

Snazzy Labs (I think it was him, I've seen so many reviews) said the Intel 10th gen chips will have wifi 6 built in so I guess it's worth waiting for a mid lifespan refresh in 6-9 months. The 16in is almost identical to the 2014 15in I have in terms of thickness and footprint so I can't help but wonder if they could have squeezed in an SD card slot. SD is still wildly popular and even in some cameras with XQD or CF they have an SD as the second slot. I am glad that they're making the base option pretty powerful and have returned the escape key along with the more traditional keyboard mechanism. They do appear to be listening now. With more efficient chips than ever I'd personally take a hit in battery size if it meant a more solid connection to a built-in SD slot.

In my experience handling a thousand-ish photos on import (like you would for a wedding), Lightroom uses on average 10-12GB of RAM on my iMac, so I’m glad I have 24GB. Might be helpful to have 32GB if you’re a wedding photographer.
