The director Baillie Walsh was blessed to have Daniel Craig as a friend before he was well known. Craig helped the movie get made and was also one of the Executive producers.
Craig is brilliant actor yet this film is about much more than Flashbacks of a Fool'. I cried for Jane's death. I cried for Ruth's sorrow in her husband Boots death that was Joe's childhood BEST friend. Sad Joe carried such guilt to run away. Evelyn (Jane's mom) certainly must have been filled with so much quilt. Her last words to Jane were horrible. No mother should EVER say such words to their young child. Jane's dad deserved better too. Poor Jane.

I loved the actor in this the way he looked so cool like a young David Bowie. I don’t think he did any more films after this. Harry Eden. Peter Pan.

She becomes an archetype, a tantric goddess. Almost like some passage in the Bhagavadgita, when "ordinary" characters suddenly reveal a divine essence. The scene is marvelous, hypnotic. I saw this utterly underrated film, which pulls no punches. The horrible tragedy is what created that ghost of a man he has become.
The scene itself though is like an apotheosis. It also touches me on a very personal level, as it speaks to my generation (l was born in the late '60s). I lived in Germany in the early '80s and l understand so well Daniel Craig's character's younger self in that scene. I recall similar awkward moments at that age, at an apartment of a classmate l had those kinds of ardent irreproducible passions for only a gangly 16 year old can have, living at that time, in that place. Feeling shyness and at the same time intoxicated by her sweet and elemental sylph like charms, a rose erupting in fragrance.
It's an unforgettable scene, to say the utmost least. For those who don't "get it," they may either never have experienced what it meant to be in love at that age, or better yet to be in love at the age at that particular time, in that particular place.

It's not just that scene yet the song If There Is Something by Roxy Music.
Director Baillie Walsh had so much help by Daniel Craig to get this film made. He's even one of the Executive producers.
The scene was indeed a flashback into youth during the 70s with shaggy rugs & David Bowie Glam.
      Roxy Music even got better.
Avalon LP by Roxy Music is my favorite but THIS song is my fav that touched my heart. When you were young ......
Nothing will ever compare to the times of YOUR youth like that of the music in your youth. The 70s were so unique in music and the Sexual Revolution.

I knew nothing about this film before watching it so can you imagine how i as a Roxy Fan who thinks that ' If there is something 'is one of the finest songs in pop/ rock history felt when ' out of the blue ' this iconic scene appeared . I was gob smacked with nostalgia . Early Roxy in particular was the glue that bound my band of brothers together . Other cultural references here are the front room that was never used and kept only for best . There is also the aspirational deep pile carpet . I was working class and thought we were posh cos my dear dad did some extra shifts just to buy some lino( Leum ) . Fitted carpets were a pipe dream . Bowie was a god too - who knows , we might only have 5 years after all ??? Thank you to all involved in making this movie ✌️😊

When I watched the movie this scene marked me a lot. Just listening to this song gives me the weird feeling of sadness and missing a time not lived. I was born in 1992, but I love everything related to the 70/80's: movies, music, style (even porn! LOL). I would love to have lived at that time.

+Mozart Herbert I feel you man watching movie's like dazed and confused and almost famous make me feel incredibly sad knowing I missed out on this period of time - its the only time period I feel this way about. Nowadays everyone's on their phone making stupid snap chat stories documenting every little moment of their lives instead of living in the moment. It makes me sad.

I love this scene! So true about being young at that time "doing" songs and groups of that time was so common, but it could be fun. No computers or x-boxes to sap up our time, we found corny ways to pass the time and have some fun. My sister and I would "do" so many songs and end up in giggles for its purely ridiculous and silly context but it was innocent, and the happy memories we remember and treasure now... We weren't as cool to know Roxy Music but we "did" Queen, Grease, Bee Gees, Meatloaf, et al. lol. Oh those days... :-)

When I saw the reprise of this scene, at the end of the movie, my eyes started watering and the tears came streaming down, and wouldn't stop. And i didn't even know why. The emotional fucus and extreme accurateness of what it expresses is so acute, so raw and at the same time understated, that it took my breath away... and it also "took me right back, to when i was young..." and the first times i heard this unparalleled song.

I think that they sped up the music, Felicity Jones lip synched at high speed, and then here in this video they slowed her down to normal speed, and overdubbed the record so that she is both "in slow motion" and at normal speed. This technique was also used I think for Beach House Wishes

This movie is a hidden gem. Sadly it came and went with very little publicity. If you haven't seen the movie, you need to; it's one of the best!! This track is simply brilliant. When I come across this movie on TV something makes me stop every time and watch it...again!

When the film came out it was a disaster so to read all of your comments on here is really amazing and touching... You love Roxy as much as I do ... and Bowie -. how could you choose? THANK YOU!

Is that THE Baillie Walsh? As in... the Writer and Director of this movie!?!? If so, THANK YOU for one of the most iconic and moving films I have ever seen. This scene captures my adolescence perfectly, including the girl who got away, and the closing scene gets me every time. I can't hear Roxy Music without remembering this film and the emotions it evoked. I hope you (and Daniel and Felicity and everyone else involved) are proud of this movie, despite its inexplicable performance at the box office, because it's a masterpiece.

100% agree to those that mentioned not forgetting this scene, but it was a good film too! It took me back to my school days, living in a sea-side town in 1970's Britain, watching TOTPs every Thursday night. Going down to the Rec to dance.... and that girl...
“Shake your hair girl with your ponytail
Takes me right back (when you were young)”!
And Felicity Jones, well... she could easily have been “that girl”!

I agree. This film and this scene in extreme partcular chiills me and elevates me.
It's hilarious that Amazon's dopey Prime Video / DVD algorithm for this film does not mention Daniel Craig, Felicity Jones, Clare Forlani, Mark Strong, Olivia Williams ... .

If I recall, this movie was a Daniel Craig personal project. Many aspects of real life in this.
    This scene was its standout.
Music was just shortly before my time, but I do dearly like the song and how it seems to transport you inwards.
Stil, Brian Ferry through all my research is considered a near demigod of the time and of the music..'Avant Garde' I've heard it called, along with Brian Eno that introduced the synthesizer into popular music.. So, its with respect and acknowledgment that it might be beyond me as I'm not of that era, but I cant help but say that Brian Ferry's vocals sound like a bleating sheep... It cant just be me. All the same, 'respect' because he achieved idolhood and an unshakable loyal global following which has been sustained for decades to come.
