Any way you can email me a copy of that template or is it posted online? I've tried 4 times and can't get it right
Nice job just impove my skill a lot
I manufactured dashboards here in Michigan for Ford an Chrysler the melted plastic tabs are from a heatstaking process which melts the plastic with heat and pressure from a hot foot which melts and rolls the plastic to create a melted mushroomed head. Most matl. the plastic will be a polypropylene use the same type of plastic to melt to the existing leg, or we use C. A. Glue and bond in a new piece to remelt. 👍 Good luck good vid.
where are you located? can i bring my car or mail my door panels to you?
@@sayno2mornings were you able to get those templates?
I watch so many upholstery video looking for a particular task but none and absolutely none explain how to attach the insert back to the door panel. I guess that mean you are the best, period. That is my story and I am sticking to it. I have been looking for that last step how to attach the insert and you are the only one who show and explain how.
Thanks
I used silicone to stick it back on.
I bought a repair manual that lists all the steps, so I don't forget to reconnect anything. The videos definitely help visualize the steps.
Thank you for taking the time to show how to do the reupholstery job. I know it created more work on your part but it is very beneficial to those of us who are trying to figure this out on our own.
Im not repairing anything, i still watched the whole video.excellent job sir.
Dude. I’ve been pulling my damn hair out trying to fix these panels. 04 convertible. So most everything dry rotted because the previous owners didn’t keep it covered properly. Thank You for these awesome tips.
William, what a great video. Cheaply made, one time use, no repair planned...I just bought an 06...
I love the zip tie invention . Thank you
Mr. William I sure could use your help with my beetle!
Thank you! We are restoring our 2000 Beetle and what you shared with the zip ties is proving to be a life saver. Great video!
Hi there! Just purchased my daughter an 02 Beetle and it needs A LOT of interior work. Plastics, door panels, lights and window wiring. Any tips on where you bought some of your replacements?
What a great video. The zip ties are brilliant. I'm not looking forward to taking on this project, but I feel a little more confident after seeing this. Thank you.
Thanks William! Brilliant method for reattaching! I went right for your method despite it looking like a PITA as you are a professional. If you are doing this for others - its gotta work.
I tried heat welding some smaller zip-ties in place and it seems to work well. Then, with a little bumping about as I was installing, the panel fell out... I went and got wide zip-ties and some Permatex plastic weld. I bent the ties as you show to get good surface area, applied the epoxy, then used heat to tack the zip-ties in place and allow the epoxy to dry. It worked perfectly! NONE of them broke off and the wide ties worked really well. Thank you again, good sir!
While watching the video I was think that some epoxy would really solidify as well. Thanks for the info.
So you melt the epoxy and zip ties together? I'm not sure I understand
Great job! You’re video was tremendously well done, great camera work and editing. The thing that is so wonderful is your calm and easy going demeanor. Thank you so much. I’ve got a t-100 Toyota truck with those darned heat-stack, melted in plastic rivets too. However, because you did so terrific a job at the step by step, I’m more comfortable with dremeling off the heads, drilling in and using a screw to hold it in place. I’ve got a pattern (stripe) on my material though. Your experience showed great sewing for the material to not bunch up. Now I just need to place the stripes where they’ll be the least trouble about making them remain vertical through the bends and curves.
You did a good job. I've been doing auto upholstery for 24 years. I have my own shop in Hagerstown. Just a few tips for you and those watching. 1. Wait an hour or so until the glue drys good. It wont pull off and you can move it around without it sticking before you want it too. 2. Drill holes in the back flange and reattach it with a 2 part epoxy. Use adhesive promoter on the door panel to help the epoxy stick to certain plastics like polypropylene. Norton's structural adhesive, Speed grip 5 after the panel is clamped in place works great.
Warren763 - you look like you know what you are talking about and I wish I could understand you. "Back flange?" What is that? And what is the purpose of drilling holes? Would appreciate it if you would go back and clear up what you are saying so that those of us that are not in the upholstery business can understand your obviously expertise comments. Thanks in advance.
Thank you so much for this video. My husband & I just finished a 2006 Beetle. We thought we could just fix what was already on there from the factory by taking it off & gluing it again. It was a nightmare! We followed your instructions, made the pattern & cleaned that cardboard form completely. The new vinyl stuck perfectly and fits so well! Thank you again!
Glad it helped!
Thank you for making this easy step by step tutorial. My '02 VW Beetle panels are starting to peal off and I keep getting that sticky crap on my hand every time I open the dam door. After watching this video, I know I can fix it myself rather than pay 3x as much for someone else to do it.
The zip ties! BRILLIANT!! Starting the door refinishing of my project early next week! The zip ties will be a game changer.
Oh wow. This video is such a huge blessing! Very well executed, direct and to the point. Wish me luck, this video gave me the confidence to take on this diy project:)
Excellent video. Excellent work. Plastic welding the zip ties is absolute genius!! Thank you for sharing!!
Awesome video and thanks for the patience to explain everything. I knew there had to be. DIY and you proved it.
Thank you for this video! Very informative and explains well how to do this yourself. I will definitely use this method to fix mine.
thank you for showing how to mount that back to the door panel... I was scratching my head on how I was going to do this. Thank you again.
True craftsman. You make it look so easy!
Awesome tip with the zip ties! Thank you very much for the great vídeo, and I have subscribed to learn more from you. Thank you very much again! ;-)
Great video! The zip tie tip is the best!
Thanks so much for the info. Zip ties worked great. I used bondic to attach them to the panel and it worked great.
Thanks a lot, William Hall! I just recently replaced my headliner and have been desperately needing to replace my door inserts next. I've been searching around for any tips/tricks on how to do it and do it right, so I'm grateful you took the time to upload a very informative and detailed video explaining your process. Thanks again man and great job
I'm not sure if you still check the comments for this video since it's not exactly a recent upload. I'm not sure how else to contact you, so I thought I would at least attempt it anyways. If you do see the comment, I would appreciate your reply. I would like to chat with you about maybe having sew the pieces together for me. I'm going to attempt it myself first. I recently purchased a sewing machine to teach myself a few things for upholstery purposes. I have a shop here at home where I do things on the side such as, headliner replacement, paint jobs, and other odds-n-ends stuff.. Hoping to add upholstery to the list in the near future since no one around here offers the service. This would be a good experience for me to get my feet wet on a small project like this, but I'm not going to want to waste a lot of material, nor my time. If I end up unhappy with my results then I would like to possibly pay you for the job, and that's what I'd like to chat with you about. I don't want to just leave my email address or anything sitting on here for anyone else to see and use, but if you do see the comments just let me know if you want my email or my cell or just whatever. Thanks again
What he said! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing in detail, there’s are a lot of door panels that are plastic welded , i never thought of zip ties in that way i will try on. My next one, rather than turning down the job
Thx a lot for this is amazing video, looking forward to start this up with my door pannel

Hi there! Just purchased my daughter an 02 Beetle and it needs A LOT of interior work. Plastics, door panels, lights and window wiring. Any tips on where you bought some of your replacements?
You need to wear a respirator when using xylene, its hazardous to your lungs.
I want to thank you for sharing this, its genius
thank you so much! it looks great!
William Hall,A true craftsman
Thank you for the tips. What a great video
Thank you for doing this! I bought a NOS $350 panel 4 years ago and it's toast already. The foam turns to goo in the heat.
How did u fix the break in the door? Getting ready to do my bug doors this week! Ur video is a tremendous help!!!!I really need to know how to fix the break, it's right where mine is....Tks!
Brilliant! Thank you!
William Hall, How did u fix the break in the door? Getting ready to do my bug doors this week! Ur video is a tremendous help!!!!I really need to know how to fix the break, it's right where mine is....Tks!
Thank you for the top shelf video
Mr. Hall, first off thanks, my '01 NB has the same type of failure and that inner material has separated. At 1:03 you showed that the door card frame was broken and mentioned you would show how to fix it, I didn't catch it in this video. Did you melt it together/ weld it with the soldering iron and zip ties as filler material? I love the idea of using the zip tie ratchet end as a fastener...WIN!!!
soldering gun works good just remember its brittle and may need extra support. JB weld maybe
I followed these good instructions, but found that after I "welded" the zip ties to the door, I filled hot glue around the bases. That made them extremely strong.
Thanks Sir. A lot of worksfor a little thing. German design?
You are the only one I found that does it correctly! Can I send these? things to you?
Very nice job bud Norm
Wow, thank you for this sir.
Great job. Please wear gloves with Xylene (very dangerous)
Thanks for the video. 1:00 The door trim panel for my daughter's Beetle also is broken the exactly same spot. Can you tell us how you repaired that?
The zipties are absolutely genius
Great work...fantastic.
Thanks for the tips! I know if I tried that vinyl work it would look like great grandma's elbow by the end...
That is ingenious!!!
Bonjour et merci bien que ne parlant pas votre langue votre vidéo est trés bien je vais pouvoir refaire celles de notre new beetle ,Cordialement, thanks William!
Great work sir Thanks
Thank you for watching
Great tutorial 👍
Hi William. Excellent video. How much do you charge for this service and where are you located. Thanks.
Man U helped me and it worked!
I’ve a door panel that seems to have a hardened type, almost rubber-like, foam backing that the material was easily removed from. Must I remove this too?, or can I just use my rubber cement on it. It’s really solidly applied to the plastic molded door panel and seems securely set. My concern is applying the rubber cement (going to use weldwood brand) to this rubber-like material.
Man I wish u had some patterns for my 2004 vw jetta tdi. I need all 4
thank you!!
Most zip ties are made of Nylon, like these that you used, and so that means no glue out there that I have ever heard of will actually stick to them, so this heat and weld system is definitely the way to go when using zip ties. If you are not a fan of the zip ties, you could cut strips of abs plastic from a donor source such as a heavy plastic jug and melt them in place the same way, then when its time for the final step of locking them in, just heat again and melt the inch or so of excess into a ball/knot to keep them from coming loose. :)
I came across your video and am currently working on a 2003 vw beetle panels. I was wondering what type of material do you use to recover the side panels?
Were you successful?
I’m working on my wife’s 06 Bug doors now. Thanks for this video.
Do you have recommendations for removing the black rubberized material covering the dash & console that gets sticky over time?
As you know its a serious problem on several different models, if i find a cure I will post it for sure.
I removed all of it with 90 percent alcohol. It takes it down to hard, matte plastic, but it looks and feels much better than the delaminated plastic. This worked on the door handles as well.
Thank you!
Perfect
Great job on this Upholstery work on this VW Beetle. I want to know if we can order replacement panels from you directly.
id like to know if u would reupholster mine as well?
Please add me to your orders list and let me know how much you’d charge. I don’t know that I have the patience to do this.
The only thing is, it would be really nice if there was some kind of foamy material that you could put between the vinyl and the door card... but now I have the confidence that I’ll restore that old junk-yard dog, in the garage! Thanks!
Do you know of anyplace in Jacksonville To that would do this for my 2003 Beetle?
William Hall this is a great video i enjoyed it great job.
gonna put info about how to do interior work, this will be a real good learning channel, Just getting started.
Do you work on the back seat area side panels at all?
6:21 You mentioned call you and you can sew it for us. How do we get ahold of you? Are you still doing this in 2024?
Hi William I have the exact vw with the exact problem, did u say I could pay u to make me the vinyl sewn together? PLEASE
Can you do this while the door is still attached my panel hanging off and I can see all the built up glue and watever
Thats awesome but can I get that done with a set of wrenches?
Hey there! I'm interested in knowing how you fixed the Crack in the actual door panel. Would you be willing to do a video on that? If not, what materials did you use? Thanks so much! 😊
@MeshelleMyBell I'd guess he used ABS welding rods and a soldering gun again. He mentions them in the video. You can use the same method with cracked handles although you'd also want to install a reinforcing plate so it doesn't crack again. You'd do the entire repair from the rear. You'll still see the fracture line in front, but it won't separate or move. If you want an extra strength repair on the side crack you could melt a piece of metal into the ABS spanning the crack.
I was wondering if there was a temperature for your soldiering iron to heat up zip ties
I would like to buy the pattern and could you give me name of the glue and adhesive. I really love the video. I have a beetle and I am going to try to fix the interior.
Marie Water - they sell them on eBay.
That was a lot of cement. More than I'd use. I liked the xylene tip. I'm going to get some. And I would have laid foam over the board. Some cushion would be nice.
It's ok to use some pad ,the only reason I didn't is if you look,it already had pad and it came apart. I think without foam is longer lasting fix. I have done it both ways, and the pad does feel softer.
@@williamhall749 true. What I've seen with all European cars is the foam they used is essentially headliner not seat pad. If you've upholstered a Vw, Volvo or older Benz you know what I mean. Yellow, doughy and sticky. German cars are the worst quality of everything I see. I'm recovering a sunshade on an 09 e class today. An 09!!! My 1995 roadmaster was better made. I'll keep watching your videos. I enjoyed them.
How did you stitch the two pieces together?
Two far better ways to reattach are abs hotmelt glue or just use scrap abs from another broken panel and melt it like you did but the most secure and simpliest on most of this stuff is use fiberglass cloth over the repair and use multipurpose PVC/ABS pipe cement as your resin and clean the plastic first with MEK and it will stick well. Rebuilt a whole 2001 Dodge ram dash with this method.
Skills
I want you to do mine please! ❤️
I think its the foam that makes it come apart
is that something you can do if I mailed the cleaned part?
8 months and counting. crickets chirping sound..... There is a guy on ebay selling the exact same insert thats stitched for 37$ Search on new beetle door panel
What is the wooden wheel hand tool called you use at #20:00. Nice idea on zips ties.
It’s called a spline roller and you can pick it up at your local hardware store. It’s used to re-screen the screen on your doors and windows on your house
