      @Celeborn93 Год назад +69

Not that it's not fine to have an opinion on it. But Mappa's color grading and shading was abysmal. It makes all the character models look inconsistent half the time.
People keep using the excuse that "Mappa adapted the manga better, and really got the atmosphere right with it's style, colors, and shading" when it's simply because they have zero idea or comprehension of what "good" color and shading looks like, despite having just experienced 3 seasons of it.
In fact, if they adapted it with the current art style, but added much more contrast and color to their drawings, no one would have complained, and season 4 would've looked miles better objectively.
I still thoroughly enjoyed season 4, but i just can't get over how bad it looks at times, where it was absolutely avoidable.

Each studio has a distinct artistic direction. WIT Studio opted for a captivating storybook aesthetic, evident in the character designs characterized by thick outlines and unique brushwork that sets it apart from other anime. Additionally, the color palette, textures, music, backgrounds, and the steampunk-inspired ODM Gear all contribute to a mesmerizing mid-century ambiance, resulting in an incredible visual experience. Conversely, MAPPA pursued a more subdued and somber atmosphere, employing unsaturated tones with hints of blue to achieve a modernized appearance. Additionally, they sought to infuse a sense of war, resulting in certain scenes featuring less visually pleasing elements such as the reddish gradient and the dust filter.
Regarding character design, WIT Studio employed minimal linework and emphasized the use of colors and shading. This approach not only facilitated a smoother animation workflow but also resulted in impressive animation quality. Furthermore, they skillfully incorporated complex camera work, adding a level of visual dynamism to certain scenes that left a lasting impression. On the other hand, MAPPA's character designs were meticulously detailed, enhancing their beauty but making the animation process more time-consuming and challenging. To meet the demanding eight-month deadline for the season, the studio made necessary compromises, such as utilizing CGI for the Titans and ODM Gear scenes, in order to expedite the workflow and ensure timely release of the season.

Which works in lots of the scenes where horrible stuff is going on, but they even have it in calm scenes and scenes during the time jump where nothing extreme is happening. It feels out of place: like when the main scouts are riding the train cart and talking about who will get erens titan, sasha says it shouldn't be conny because hes dumb and that it should be her, then conny looks at her with the shadowy eyes like shed just murdered his entire family, and calls her dumb... Its very difficult to compare both studios action and animation because almost every season and episode has different people and shedules. The contrast comparison is a totally valid critisism, altough the more bleek and less vibrant colors do fit the dark story a lot more. Mappas color designers also made way more interesting looking color palletes, making each scene and episode feel very distinct, while wit studio recycled some palletes (like the yellow sunset which has been overused since s1) over and over again. While i like Wit studios take on the show, i am so happy that we get to see something different for Season 4, since i think that Wits style got very stale and repetitive.

I think the way it all coincided worked out as perfectly as things could have, a big reason I originally enjoyed aot so much at first was for the unique animation and while a lot was lost in the switch, the fact it happened after a 4 year timeskip to a particularly dark plotline fit perfect with mappas style and the fact our characters look different now reflects the time between them
Only thing that I really disliked from mappa was the titan animations which is a pretty big “only”, but I’ll concede CGI was their best maybe only option given circumstances. They don’t look like they’re made of flesh anymore pretty much, that mottled looking texture all titan flesh had is gone and they look kind of sterile, Attack titan in particular looks terrible but then again wit CGI was exceptionally bad

One thing I really don't like about MAPPA's versions of the anime is the weird filters they sometimes use. Instead of using detailed colour grading and contrasting to get a certain atmosphere across like Witt, it seems a lot of scenes just have a blank colour filter over top the scene. This is most usually seen in flashback episodes, like with Reiner, Berthold and Annie being on the island for the first time. The whole landscape has a weird blue/turquoise filter and it looks terrible. The sky isn't dark, moody and cloudy but a greenish blue. Similarly in the flashback scenes to when Eren and friends are in the carriage going home from working on the railroads, the entire landscape has an odd orange filter. It's an attempt to make it look like the sun is going down and they're going home from a long day, but instead of orange light being shone onto the carriage and faces of the characters realistically it's just a filter stuck on top. In one aspect I don't really blame them because of the heavy deadlines set for the poor animators, but at the same time, whoever it is that sets those deadlines needs to stop sacrificing quality over quantity.

However, in general I prefer the Wit style mostly because it’s what most of us are used to. I don’t know what season 4 would have looked like with the Wit style, but regardless we got a product which I think if we are honest with ourselves, we can all be satisfied with.

Mappa’s Titan Design is better IMO, and while it’s true that the titan fights tend to look better with WIT because of the 2D, we have to remember that Mappa is actually doing an amazing job with the CGI titans in the second part of the final season AND The Rumbling. WIT also used CGI for the colossal Titan most of the time and if you go back and watch it, it looks pretty janky and out of place. Both studios are equally good on their field. It's not about studio style, it's about story theme and mood. You can notice in memory, that MAPPA can replicate the same art style and mood as WITT did. But there was no need for that up until some point in story.
The part of story with which WITT worked - was about titans. The part of story with which MAPPA worked - was about people, war, character progression. Style and mood was changed to capture sudden time skip and how characters changed. How they grew up.
The contrast in WITT work helped to create a feel of fantasy world, a world we know nothing about and eager to find more about it. Lack of contrast in MAPPA work on the other hand, helped to ground the story to real world and rules we understand.
I highly disagree that contrast would've made MAPPA work look better. That's because you lack of understanding what contrast was used for in a first place. That's also why the entire studio "couldn't do" what one guy did. Not because they can't (that's silly), but because they knew that to portray and convey correct mood, they would need to tonn down contrast.
MAPPA style during Season 4 would've never worked in story for Season 1-3. And WITT style for Season 1-3 would've never worked in story for Season 4. That's why they are so different and equally good.

Yes it looks closer to the manga but if I had to be completely honest, the manga's art never looked that great to me (though the art improvement over the years is very impressive). And the amount of proportion mistakes and frame drops are also distracting in Mappa. In terms of backgrounds Wit also looks much better thanks to their masterful use of contrast differences. As for the hair and objects, I also prefer Wit. Though the object used in the example looks more detailed in Mappa's version, it's an object that should mostly go unnoticed. Meaning you don't need/want it to have too many details (the less you want for viewers to focus on something, the less details it should have, otherwise you get an overload of details on your screen which can accidentally cause the lack of a clear focus point in the scene). So this again shows that Mappa struggles a bit with overall balancing of foreground with background art and color contrasts. In the example that was used the hair looks great in both (different styles), but for most other scenes I don't like the way the hair is done in Mappa (mostly due to awkward proportions, the hair doesn't seem to sit right on the head often times). I also must add that the use of music and sound was far better balanced and timed in Wit's animation projects. In conclusion, while I really like Mappa, Wit is generally just much more skilled and perfectionistic. Even when both studios are at their best, I prefer Wit studio.

"...b-but Mappa flat animation and PS3 titans fit muh season 4 dark themes better 😢"
Everyone knows season 1 and 2 were sunshine and rainbows. It was a kids show until Mappa came along.

Not a single person who understands animation seems to side with Mappa.
Why are casuals so apprehensive about criticizing season 4?

@@Pedro_Le_Chef Because they think that hyping up any Mappa production is what the cool kids do. It's just the typical hive mind thing.

Mappa makes the characters look more matured, the whole feeling is darker and it feels more realistic. I think it fits season 4 perfectly

I liked WIT's original sharp, polished, high contrast art style more as it gave anime it's own unique aesthetic looks and vibe. Not to mention they started making it a decade ago and WIT last work on AOT S3 was phenomenal such as Levi vs Kenny fight was next level something out of top tier animation movie. I wish Wit continued with AOT S4 or rather collaborated with MAPPA to finish this masterpiece of an anime!

Wit gave the show a more majestic look.
Mappa made the show look like it lost its charm or appeal. Like the end of the world or something.
Mappa even needed the guy that drew Levi fighting the Beast Titan in S3 to draw the ending scene where Levi dodges a bunch of things in the air to throw a thunder spear while Mikasa slices Eren’s head off.

I feel Mappa has the ability to adapt to Attack On Titan more, I’ve just realized how dark the anime actually is. Mappa is able to enhance the anime by adding unique OST. Mappa can animate Titans better just compare Erens Attack Titan on Wit and Mappa. Plus Mappas cgi makes the anime more budget efficient. The people saying that Wit should’ve continued cause of Bertholt Titan cgi, imagine seeing millions of Bertolt Titan in the Rumbling obviously you can see the difference. But I don’t like the Fact your using episode 4 for comparison, remember wit released that episode back in 2014 and mappa released memories of the future in 2022.
