      Oh trust me I have *plenty* of critiques about the animation. The change in art style definitely didn't do the show any favors (The fact that cursed energy is sometimes a generic "Look he's glowing" kind of effect is my least favorite design choice) and this is the most apparent in fight scenes. A lot of the impact in each attack is lost because the animation is smooth when it needs to be snappy or the tension gets thrown off with poor timing. However, the animation is actually really good for casual scenes that have a lot of motion, and some fights like the Mega Mechamaru fight work surprisingly well with the new art style.
      That being said this season seems to have a lot of "Omg look how attractive this character is!!!" shots that seem to be thrown is specifically to get people online to post about it that come at the expense of the scene's tension or framing. Got to say, don't like that.

I hate to hear stuff like this because JJK S2 has been absolute fire so far and really want to see it continue but i just don't understand why Japanese studios can't just have normal working conditions, like why do deadlines have to be so tight and why do they have to overwork the employees? The fans have literally shown after S1 that we are willing to wait almost any amount of time for this good content, so why not just take as much time as they need to? How Mappa keep monopolizing new projects without adding more staffs, time, or even benefits to animators, baffles me. I understand more when smaller studios are struggle to work within the time crunch as they need to make a name for themselves, have less bargaining power, or even resources. It's absolutely DEBILITATING. Stressing the human body to its very limits without properly nourishing it is abuse. And rest and routine are forms of care. So they are absolutely right that the conditions are bad and causing harm. But I want to stress that a clean work station and office is not required to make great animations, it just depends on the person. For me, a clean room or office makes me nervous and distracts me. I how these employees get the schedules and the time off they deserve.

    We all love Kyoani. I am a great fan too.
    But at the same time, I am also curious why all the female directors (those who have gone on to head a series, or like Fujita Haruka, almost there) have left Kyoani and gone off to work somewhere else. For a studio that is known for employing women and treating them well, I would expect a better retention of key staff like series directors.

    That's why always appreciate animators when they produce quality work like these. I'm really tired of seeing people get up their asses, sending death threats, when these animators are worked to the bone. To the minute that they have to publish the episode. It's a terrible practice, and it sets a bad standard that gets normalized and encourages abuse in creative production.
    I also see some people say they should unionize. They do have an anime union called Japan Animation Creators Association or "JAniCA," but the experience has left many to feel hopeless which is unfortunate. Thing is, the make up of animation studios are heavily reliant on freelancers as well as independent studios. They don't have set wages. A lot of the budget is already determined without the anime studios input. Even if animators were to collectively determine their wages and set salaries, companies can outsource work and seek out animators who will take the job for low pay as some simply want to animate despite conditions. This makes it hard to come together. It's not their fault for wanting to add to their portfolio by working for massive studios, but it doesn't take away the clear mistreatment. I'm hoping some groups of animators will find big names to fight for their behalf. You can only do so much when you're a collective who doesn't have their foot in the door in the bigger part of the industry, so I'm happy to hear that there are veteran animators are speaking out. I hope directors are joining in as well.

    jjk season 2 production always has been fated to crash. Keisuke Seshimo's production pipeline passed through the cycle of JJK to CSM and back to JJK, with a lot of staff overlap, even to the prior TGoH w/ the director Seong-Hu Park. While Manabu Otsuka is taking way too many projects than the studio should, the producers also want to push JJK to a certain release date. It's just a shit situation overall, with each following MAPPA project stacked on top of each other, the working conditions were doomed deliberately. Jigokuraku took the fall in terms of animation quality, and so far, JJK's been pretty good but that's only because it had a stacked team working on it in the first place.

    • @WieldMyWord
      @WieldMyWord 8 месяцев назад +1

      Still just 10-11 episodes in to JJK 2, we will mostly see the backlash in animation towards later episodes for why they needed a 3 week break, etc. Right now its been pretty subpar and nothing exceptional from an animation standpoint.

    • @joshuukun
      @joshuukun 8 месяцев назад +6

      @WieldMyWord Subpar? Unless you only mean Shibuya Incident arc (which in fairness is still arguable for some scenes) and not what they had for Gojo's Past arc I'd probably agree. If not, hard disagree. Episodes 1-5 of season 2 was the strongest JJK has ever been visually. 6-10 hasn't had the best but it stayed consistent and there were still some creative stylistic choices with the presentation such as with yuji talking about "Human Earthworm 4", iirc Mechamaru's "Pigeon Voila" on Mahito, the dreamlike filter when Kenjaku discussed sealing Gojo (one over a game of what i think is mahjong and another on a playground.) and many more.
      Tho while I could see why someone would be less impressed with post 3 week break in comparison, jjk season 2's been incredible visually so far, barring, of course, the times where ghosting post-production was added due to potential epilepsy and the laws needed in Japanese TV broadcasts.

    • @WieldMyWord
      @WieldMyWord 8 месяцев назад +3

      @@joshuukun Gojo's past arc had some issues, where sometimes it went high in quality to derp moments (artifacts in some of the 3D shots, low detailes some places), but I agree its better than what is now in terms of animation.
      "creative stylistic choices with the presentation"
      human earthworm 4 was just cringe gag, I don't watch jjk for the humor as there is other shows doing that a lot better. The pigeon voila was just epilepsy with all the dimming and ghosting, even then its mostly pop-up storyboard animation with Mahito changing forms.
      The fact we can see problems already now with the animation and the storyboarding in Shibuya Incident arc, means there are coming more up. Episode 11 ended very abruptly which is an indication there are production issues going on. Its not suprising considering they had an short production time for 23 episodes, and given that the animators are complaining now further emphasises there are something wrong going on.
      Ofcourse animation is not everything when it comes to an anime, some issues I have with S2 JJK is the justification of how Geto became bad/evil in the Gojo past arc. Given the information that was told it seems forced how Geto went with his justification to kill non-sorcerers, when obviously his main issue was the "Star religious group" that was in his way. Now I dont blame Mappa for this as its a manga problem rather than anime.

    • @joshuukun
      @joshuukun 8 месяцев назад +2

      @WieldMyWord I'd argue the chibi moments on Gojo's Past arc were a conscious decision rather than a sign of animation issues, unnless you're referring somethine else to the "derp moments," in which case, I'm stumped. I guess that one moment when Gojo turns around and Toji is about to stab him? That episode's director prioritized movement and animation over character design consistency anyway, and they delivered. Then again, there's Arifumi Imai directing the episode after that, which had really strong character drawings that balance things out. It's the creative freedom the animators have that I enjoy for sakuga, which was the complete opposite for the CSM anime for example, which ran strictly on Ryu Nakayama's cinematic vision, while that's good in itself and all.
      Dislike the Human Earthworm scene or not, going through the cinematic aspect of it was going the extra mile, same with the Pigeon Voila scene, while ruined by all the ghosting post-production for the broadcasting laws, the key animation still shows impressive feats from the animators that went beyond the manga for the adaptation. Even the first scene with Mei Mei and Utahime in the haunted house was all solid, with the exposition of the house too, that wasn't even present in the pages. Especially the visual flair of putting flashbacks in windows/glass (i.e. Gojo explaining his technique, Yuko and Geto discussing Toji) all showed the animators flexing their creative prowess.
      While JJK season 2 had ultimately fucked schedule and all, and even if you prefer season 1, there is some objectively good feats they've accomplished despite it that even surpasses the first. (the compositing, for example. it was gnarly on the first season.)

    • @WieldMyWord
      @WieldMyWord 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@joshuukun I know the chibi thing is a comedy thing, but it comes in conflict with other styles like its trying to be Bocchi the rock or something. You have one place where gojo crush a can of soda, you don't see him using curse on that object as it just got crushed without him putting force on it (might be an animation error), some uneven time framing in the first episode. The haunted house had better animation due to it being partly rotoscoping (heavy referencing), maybe the Utahime scared scene after the rats was wierdly handled, but other than that its fine.
      However normally the first episode tends to be higher quality and care than what comes after. The fact we are noticing issues now means we are closer to their production time, which means we are going to see some sloppy work down the line. The only exception are going to be if there is a big end fight or something or highlight (I am only anime watcher).
      The composition is almost the same, they have trouble blending 3d elements (just look at the background in some scenes when there are movements), you can see it doesn't track the characters properly from where they standand, other than that a lot of it is just subjective.
      "Especially the visual flair of putting flashbacks in windows/glass (i.e. Gojo explaining his technique, Yuko and Geto discussing Toji) all showed the animators flexing their creative prowess."
      That is not flexing, its just being pretentious, JJK is not alone in adding stuff to scenes, the problem is when its overwhelmed with exposition dump (people have to read subtitles too). Also personally JJK has one of the worst power system as its insanely vague and dependent, and it doesn't help when someone can ass pull out moves (common trope) from nowhere to counter another.

    Its more difficult when an artstyle is too detailed if you're a layout artist you're not expected to do detailed drawing as key animators does. Thats why you can tell Nobili said "they worked on my shot to the last second" because he was empathetic.

    As a business major it's clear to see Kyoani has adopted a more Americanized business practice in the workplace. More or less decentralized authority, mentorships. It should be adopted as it's been proven in multiple businesses that these things empower animators to be more creative and outside the box which is PERFECT for animators! Mappa is doing this because of Japans lack of laws and checks and balances, but more importantly because of their massive cultural conseuqnces. It's very taboo to go against culture and tradition where in America it's not.
