    I like how season 2’s art style, specifically the first few episodes, is drawn in a more lighter and fun style compared to the first season. It puts more emphasis on how light the mood was and how the story wasn’t so dark and heavy compared to where it was heading in the future. If they keep this up for the Shibuya arc, besides consistently you can see it in a way do Geto and Gojo’s past seeping into the current events of the series.

    I was surprised when people said the animation was worse this season and with the examples you gave and my personal experience I couldn’t figure out why. Then I remember people love overly detailed character art and assume that means good animation. Not to say S1 was badly animated in the slightest, it was very well animated and it got praised for a very good reason. I prefer S2 approach to character art with more simplified designs.

      I think it’s nostalgia bias and the need to pick a better of two things trying different things to their best. It’s like when people debate the game of the year and start using the most nit picky things to tear down one game over another when in reality they both are different and equally as good shining in their own way. Jjk season 1 needed the hyper detail and fast fluid action at the cost of The overused hate comment (composition) as if it must be perfect in all areas to get the acclaim it got. People still act like season 1 was mid and claim fans brought millions of copies for no reason. Yeah jjk competes in sales with one piece for no reason I’m sure 66/200+ chapters told me everything I need to know. I’m sure it wasn’t a set up and it’s all generic and all fans are wrong after they read it and I didn’t. Studios ha they put money in for mid material all the time. Sarcasm. Also the detail hyped season 1 for pixel counters. Season 2 needs the simple details for character acting and speedy production (even though all the pro camera angles make this just as time consuming.) overall we’re eating good and anime fans have never been this greedy and unfillable. If I watched this afternoons like I did dbz back in the day. I’d be blowing my mind in peak. It’s like the Naruto for kids but all the fights are good and every episode has a plot and pacing. We’re eating like kings and complaining like peasants.

      They think a simpler art style = bad/poor quality. I mean look at Mp100, i's a simple artstyle yet it's animated beautifully. Plus the expressions get more attention.

    • @nichescenes
      @nichescenes 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@strudelh Yeah, i guess its ok. Some people just arent that into animation. I know my fam watch it with me and they don't notice no matter how I tell them that the animation changed and the show is fluid and they don't even notice if an anime has lots of great shots and fluid fights all they know is that certain shows bore them more than others and I cant tell if the not so well animated shows matter to them. Its why I think studios go for quantity over quality since most don't care and the complainers are just loud minority and they complain even when things are good. Like people who call jjk season 1 and 2 bad animation and mid story etc...they don't care to dig into the show's story and think the power system is too complicated. If it was simple they'd just claim its trash due to simplicity etc. Cant win so why try.

    @hawshimagical 10 месяцев назад +6

    as a learning artist, through sheer trial-and-error, i noticed that the most consistent way to set up a drawing, of any shape, is to start with straight angular paths. japan adapted to this by simplifying their character designs to better resemble that. but the artists of this series expand on that idea, making it look more like a style and less like a "speed strategy". i like it.
    as for the lighting change, at first glance i want to like season 2's better, but the character animations have that "tv series" quality, where the storyboards and keyframes are very prominent, even in the best animated moments. it looks like it still favours the more intense shading. more freeform changes in posing would take better advantage of the smoother lighting.
    6:16 being a very big example. thats like 7 completely seperate drawings but they look near-identical…but its still about 7 whole drawings they had to make. its not "less work" or lazy, its definitely a choice. missed opportunity to add a little more variety like tilt and physics, because theres so little shading and detail to worry about.

    Not a lot of people make a video about my obsession with art styles, so I really appreciate this. I don't watch jjk but I when I stumbled upon a season 2 content one day, I had a whiplash because it resembled the art style of the artists I'm trying to achieve. So I immediately searched up the artist and added them to my list, lol.
    They all basically have the same choices in common: Simplistic shading, Dimensional, and NOSTRILS. AHHHHHHH, I LOVE NOSTRILS (goes feral).
    That sounds weird, but for me, it's the perfect solution to wanting to draw noses, but neither as lines or dots nor as fully defined noses. So, nostrils!

    The difference in styles is very noticeable if you look at the shot of Gojo with his blindfold on in the latest shibuya arc pv, I don't think the 1st season would have drawn his blindfold with such little highlighting.
    Also, the style of shading felt much "sharper" (for lack of a better term) in S1. In particular, at 6:18 in this video and ~7:13 in episode 5 (when geto turns to the girl) the shading used for geto's face feels so much rounder and less angled as if they were have drawn with long brush strokes. I don't know if that's just a single director/animators choice tho

    I don’t watch your videos much anymore (i was therealgamer7 with the vegeta pfp) but I appreciate you branching out to other shows. The main reason I stopped though is not because I was bored but actually because I wanted to avoid spoilers for anime I didn’t watch yet. Do you think your videos have any spoilers for the shows you cover?

      if it's an animation centered video, it usually does, although for an artstyle breakdowns like these then nah

    Love to see you back dude. I love this new art direction of jjk s2, it's a huge upgrade imho. Cus the image is clearer than ever, and the characters and the background are also easy to distinguish between each other unlike s1. (Not saying s1 is bad at all by the way, it's far from bad as a matter of fact. It's just not my cup of tea)

    I'll admit I was hesitant when I learnt that the director would be changing for season 2, but seeing the result put my concerns to bed pretty quickly. The focus on lighting, colour, and character animation over detail in design has really done them favours with regard to the overall visual appeal. I really enjoyed the flashback arc and I'm super excited to see how Shibuya turns out!

    One of the first things I noticed watching season 2 was how smooth and clean the animation looked.
    I feel like the style of season 1 was a tad generic and hindered the animation a bit making it look kinda choppy or muddy from time to time so I really really love the changes they made. It looks insane.

    i have always liked kind of art style like in jjk s2 you can also see similar art style in The Girl Who Leapt Through Time , mirai , the boy and the beast, summer wars. the reason why i think s2 art style fit s2 is cuz of the vibe of scary ,weird yet summer nostaliga we got fully from this art style if you want to understand what i mean by that watch the above movies i listed there is no art is better than one in art industry. art is all about personal preference so its really disrespectful to say one is better than another instead of saying i prefer this and that while people cant probably draw even a stick and also they dont understand how hard drawing is , you will only understand it only if you are an artist and in the community im saying this as an small local artist

    Can you do a video on the animation of overlord? I’ve always been curious as to why the animation of the series dramatically declined after season one, and the more frequent use of CG.

    • @carloscauan7967
      @carloscauan7967 10 месяцев назад +1

      Overlord's animation was never that good, in all honesty. Character designs way too detailed, not to mention S2 and S3 came out in the same year, and during that same year the team was also working on Cardcapto Sakura

    I feel like i do really miss gojo in season one art style with the very strand hair and detailed clothing folds which for me made his character design better not to say season two gojo was any less good.. its just my opinion since that kind off made jjk's anime style more recognisable for me but season two is just as good and the character detail simplicity does give room for way better fight sequence animation so im not complaining
