proper angle to drain window air conditioner water outside

  • Given the instructions that came with my LG window AC, I'm calculating 3.62° tilt downward (outside) to achieve correct drainage. It's important to angle your window air conditioner outside so the water drains outside, and does not flood the air conditioner, creating stagnant water and black or green mold.

    Yes, good point, if you don't install at the right angle the window covers don't fit correctly.

      Basically the AC should tilt slightly towards the back so the water drains.

    I had the same problem of not enough angle when installing the unit to fit in the window sash opening. I removed the top bracket on the unit (removed 4 screws) and reinstalled the bracket one inch more forward. I was able to reinstall the accordian covers on both sides connected to the unit. I had to make it bend a little, but it worked. Repositioning the bracket on top allowed the back of the unit to lean one inch and drain the water much better.

    If you have storm windows, you have to create that angle. The creators have not compensated. At least thr manual that came with mine said you did.

    Haven't heard this since 10th grade. That's 38 years ago. Can I go another 40 and never hear this again? :) Seriously though, great math skills. But when it's this hot outside, i've got the tinest stream of water going to the back to cool (lessen load on compressor) and you can tell a serious difference!

    • @p1nesap
      @p1nesap  6 лет назад

      If it's level with the window, it's probably tilted back far enough. Just don't tilt it at all forward.

      I had to move the top bar back by redrilling (carefully) for the screws that hold the bar. Mine was a 1/8 drill bit and I moved the bar about a quarter of an inch. Got enough lean to keep rain water out.

    For those of you like me who don't have an extra wood block lying around.. you can create the downward angle by stuffing the styrofoam from the box into the window

      Is water dripping inside? If not you're ok. Either way, you should access AC /open window when possible to inspect for mold every year.

    I have this exact same unit, but cant tell by sight if its tilted properly or not. I have it properly flush with inside/outside window edges. But this morning i opened the window and tilted it back a bit and a LOT of water spilled out the back. Is there supposed to be some standing water even if tilted properly?

      @@p1nesap this water issue is why I am here also. I have mine at angle but IDK if its enough. THe hole located on the right 1/3 [looking at it from outside\at the back] of my FRIGIDAIRE 5000btu is almost useless as I see & hear the water pool hitting bottom of squirrel-fan or it is just so close to it that water is drawn up into the fan. THe moisture level in the room has gone way up. I roll my own cigarettes and the tobacco is jamming in the rolling machine which means high humidity\moisture levels. THis was a used unit, it was extremely clean, used by an old lady in her knitting room. I live in Florida and the "old folks barely used on Sundays" thingy is real here i.e. "....clean low miles...." ....ha ha !!
      I am just going to drill a few more holes and see. If it needed that water in that area I can always plug the holes I make.But the information that the new a\c units don't need water drain holes is not finding any support as far as I have found.
      → I believe this "water-pool" or "heat exchange" whatever idea is because of the floor model type a\c units that somehow evap the water like. I know this, I had one & the overflow tray never had water in it. This is also "humidifier capable" type-o-unit so thus the tray I guess...?? Anyway the characteristics of that system got injected into current window & portable a/c discussions most often..........in the garage and/or local pubs and → "the range" ...........funny how when ya say "the range" everyone knows which one or rather 'type' you might be meaning to refer to.
      BuT then...........well again here in FLORIDA, there is the golf
