      Great install video. Two questions for you: My window is 21.5” wide. Is it possible to modify the bracket at all to make this work? I have aluminum frame windows from the 80s-
      How far out does the unit and/or mounting bracket stick out from the exterior wall? Want to install to window facing narrow balcony. thanks in advance!

It is so quiet. I frequently have to walk over to it and see if it is still working, I absolutely love this. What a well designed and engineered product the entire first floor, which is approximately 1000 ft.². Is holding at 69°.

      It's not that new of a concept. It's a modern version of an old ac unit that allows a window to be closed. The difference is that this is using a mini-split /ductless system in an AC design. it's brilliant none the less. There's another company that makes an AC that sits below the window for modern windows that doesn't have a sill and the top part of the ac doubles as a shelf or false sill.

    • @ryans413
      @ryans413 2 года назад +11

      It was probably a team of people that wanted AC but also did not want to sacrifice a window but also wanted it to be silent and safe. I feel one person came up with the design another found a way to make it silent and another person found away to still use the window and have it lock for safety.

But it's going right back to the store tomorrow; it's not even blowing cool air out. I know it's super hot and humid, but I should be feeling cold air sitting in front of it. Just a little tip for anyone installing a compressor-based cooling device, which can include an air conditioner, freezer, refrigerator, or even a dehumidifier - it is important to let the coolant levels stabilize over 24 hours before powering it on for the first time. This means keeping the unit level in its normal operating position for a full day. If you had to tilt it to install it, or when you bought it, etc you will need to do this.
    What happens if you don't? If the cooling device was stored on its side for even a few hours, you can end up with a coolant leak or a rupture in the lines. You can also fry the compressor. The potential damage varies depending on how far it was tilted and for how long. It may not seem like a huge deal but it's one of those simple things you will really only need to do ONCE (as long as you don't move it again) to ensure trouble-free operation.

      There's no coolant in those systems, it's called freon and you're right about letting it sit for some hours but it's so that the oil drains back into the crankcase of the compressor to prevent a hydrolocked condition

    • @alphaforce6998
      @alphaforce6998 Год назад +19

      @@newtonraymond77 Coolant is any fluid that facilitates cooling by transferring heat from one element to another. A fluid is a liquid or gas. Freon is a coolant, which is compressed to a liquid then evaporated into a gas to transfer heat. If the coolant is part of a refrigerator, it may be called a refrigerant, but it's fundamentally the same thing.

    I've been buying AC units almost every year for 10 years. After I'd sworn off the window units because they were heavy and awkward to install, (I'm a widow) I then started buying the portable units. While they were an upgrade, the window designs were terrible. The hoses constantly fell out. Last year I purchased a Midea portable and they nailed the design. Only flaw, it's huge! However, I was so impressed with the company that I was willing to give this one a try. I just installed it with the help of this video, so thank you for that. After all these years, this is the winner. Not too heavy, easy install, great window design, and on top of all that, it runs quiet. I'm going to buy another one for another room.

      Love my portable, but its loud! Cools my bathroom quickly. Portables entire cover removes to be blown out. Good name brands of window/portable units will last 10 years or more. Remember to clean the filter every 2-4 weeks while in use and let the fan motor rest when it's not hot. Running constantly below 70 will shorten their life tremendously.

We have a 39 inches custom window and none of our previous window ACs had good insulations (both air and noise) and efficiency. This Midea U shape cools my 500+ square foot room within a few minutes and it's super quiet! It's really a game changer; we almost spent 16k to install one floor of central air. This is definitely one of my best purchases in the last couple of years. Your installation video was super helpful as well! The installation was fairly easy, and no need to go outside at all. The only hiccup was that our windows are four feet wide so we had to make some adaptions by using a leftover piece of metal frame from an Ikea kitchen cabinet to extend the sliding brackets.

    I have had this installed for 2 summers. Here is my long term experience:
    * Installation without drilling or screwing into your existing structure is possible, which is good since I rent.
    * Measure the thickness of your window PLUS how far lift\grab handles extend out. I have almost no tolerance left for a thicker window or larger handle.
    * The AC design accumulates more condensation and moisture internally than traditional designs. If uninstalling, have plenty of towels and a mop near by.
    * The wifi cannot negotiate wifi networks that do not broadcast their SSIDs, so it will disconnect from a hidden network and stay offline.
    * The plastic brackets used to hold the foam breaks easily.
    * Purchase extra foam to block the gaps the metal brackets allow against your window frame.
    * The included exterior support bracket may not be compatible with your window situation, it wasn't with mine as I have a large concrete ledge outside. Mine sits on large solid rubber pads made for planters.

    I installed this AC yesterday by watching your video, by myself and in a 5th floor window. I’ve never installed a window unit before and it was a lot easier than I expected it to be!
    The most time consuming part was evening out the outside brackets, only because my building has a stone window sill that’s uneven in the front and sticks out from the brick the bracket feet sit against. Because of this I couldn’t get the pin in the left bracket to go through all the way due to it twisting a bit in the channel while pressed against the window sill.
    In case anyone else runs into the same problem, I realized you could unscrew the brackets from the horizontal bar that sits inside after I figured out what number hole they would need to lock in at. I easily slid the pins in while separated and then put the brackets back outside, screwing them back onto the bar while I held them.
    After that it was a breeze! It’s super quiet and very cold, and I love that I’m not blocking any light with those flimsy plastic accordions on regular window units! My only gripe is not being able to close the window screen, since it’s blocked from coming down by the outside section. Bummed that I’ll need to keep the window closed on nice days due to bugs and the risk of my cats being able to slip through :(
    Thank you for sharing this easy to follow, straightforward installation guide!

    I bought a scratch and dent 12,000 BTU unit from Amazon last winter for approximately $170. Had to take it apart and hammer out the dents, but it works just fine. Love the mounting bracket. I love the water drain pan inside it. I love the extreme low noise level. I love the high efficiency.
    I got rid of my old 10,000 BTU conventional ac because the styrofoam drain pan would constantly plug up and overflow down the wall. It was difficult to clean. This one has a plastic pan with high lip. It's easy to keep clean too!
    It's mid July now and this AC rocks. I live in a 125 year old farm house of about 1000 square feet. I have gone to extreme and insulated it far beyond normal. This one window unit keeps the house at or below 70ºF when it's above 90ºF outside. The bedroom area where it's located gets pretty cold, though. I have a tower fan to circulate air around the house.
    It's plugged into a Watt monitor. When the outside is in the 80's it draws around 400 watts in day and 200 at night when it drops to high 60's. When it's in the 90's I think I've seen it as high as 600 watts, maybe 700 watts (once). It's supposed to be rated at 1000 watts. I can't imagine it running at full power. I've not seen that high of a power consumption. When it was cold outside this spring it drops to 7 watts and will run at 30 to 100 watts. I love that it's so quite and you never hear the compressor kick on and off.

      Have you seen any water draining out of the unit from the exterior section? I was wondering how the design transfers the moisture collected from the evaporator on the inside to the outside half to get eliminated.
      I thought there may have been some kind of active pump system, but it doesn't seem to have that as far as I can see from looking in at the evaporator through the filter.
      When my unit is running, I don't see any water draining out the back as with the standard type AC units, so I was wondering where it goes.

    • @geraldmoore6257
      @geraldmoore6257 Год назад

      Yes lots of water drains out. I added an aluminium trough to direct the flow of condensate so that it didn't run down the window brace and onto the siding. I assume the plastic tray carries the water out to the heat radiator and assists in cooling and the excess just overflows. It has to be humid to overflow, otherwise it gets evaporated by the heat radiator.@@dubmob151

    With that said, these old ladies claiming it's an easy install are not being honest. Just go to the companies actual install video, and you'll see all the legitimate complaints about how difficult it is.
    If you watch this guy's video closely (and he's sponsored by the company) he has to edit parts of his video and run to a hardware store and buy outside product just to finish his install.
    The reality is this:.It's a GREAT AC unit that runs super smooth and quiet. But the installation of it is a mega pain in the ass.

    • @helenetessier6469
      @helenetessier6469 4 месяца назад +2

      You are right about the installation. It was way harder and much longer than what we thought and we are manual people. Maybe it is the vinyl / type frame of our window but installing the 2 foam blocks was truly hard. We were also limit with the minimum width required so it was a tight fit for clips, etc. Those blocks did just not slide down that easy and we were even afraid of breaking those 2 plastic side arms as we had to push real hard, even had to remove the 1/4'' extra required. Overall, we like this A/C. It is quiet and good looking. We too have central heatpump/AC system but because our house has a cathedral ceiling, the bedrooms are always too hot and I hate sleeping in the heat and then go around the house and freeze. So hoping this will solve the issue. Not a cheap solution (we could not find anything lower than 10,000BTU around my area - and it is just for a large bedroom). But worth it to get good night sleeps. A note to future buyers, we probably were unlucky but the 1st 2 ACs we brought home had to be returned on the same day. 1st one had a door panel broken top and bottom. Pack everything up and the store exchanged for a 2nd unit. Installed again the framing and by the time we get the AC out of the box, we noticed that the back was damaged, where the compressor is. It seems that when boxed, the power cord was misaligned and rubbed against it. Called the store again to explain that we had already installed the framing and would like just the AC. Would not appreciate deinstalling and repacking that 2nd unit They opened a new box and we exchanged the unit only. So just make sure you really have a unit that is not damaged before moving too far into your installation. The store manager did mention that this AC company is not packaging the units with enough styrofoam, especially front / back and I was not the 1st customer with issues. At least the 3rd unit was in perfect condition. Whew! But good job with the video. Was easy to understand and quality is excellent.

      You’re right, it does take some figuring out ..especially the first year. But it’s not so bad after that. It’s actually pretty straightforward once you figure out what oddball supplies you need for a particular window setup. It’s worth watching videos a few times.
      I’m a 64 year old woman and I install and remove it mostly by myself. It’s not that big of a deal. I still find this unit easier than traditional window units to install, once you know how.
      Once I get the basic setup into the window, I get my husband to lift it with me because it is a bit awkward for one person. This is our third summer with it. I made step-by-step notes with very rough drawings as a guide, and took pictures, so it’s nowhere near as challenging as the first year was - it was well worth making notes.
      Kept all those pictures in a file on my ipad as a reminder for the next year. I labeled my notes:
      Step one.. foam in window sill. I also wrote notes or drew lines directly onto the foam, “right side” (or whatever). It’s out of sight in the end.
      Step two: install metal guides (or whatever the step was)..
      And so on.

    What a terrific design! I must say that I have never seen anything quite like it. Also, having the inverter built-in makes a huge difference when the AC turns itself on, instead of suddenly drawing a large amount of electricity to start the compressor, the inverter slowly increases the power at a gentle rate, which also saves wear and tear on the compressor itself. My 9k BTU Mini-split heat pump has the same type of inverter which I run on Lithium batteries from my class A RV rooftop which is covered in solar panels.

    A friend of mine has a old school bungalow house here in Illinois, he bought two of those, and has central air. His electric central AC bill is typically $225mo+. He now pays $160 and 1700 sq ft is cooled just fine without the use of his central AC.

    • @cryengine_x
      @cryengine_x 3 года назад +2

      If my central breaks I'm seriously considering something like that. For one thing central heat pump repairs are wildly expensive. If the compressor goes or something it might be $4500 for a new unit. Plus you gotta worry about the air handler and ducting too.
      A couple of 12k BTU of these while not cheap, about 500 each or $1000 for 2, still might be a lot cheaper.
      My biggest worry is how well it seals up against bugs. Thats the problem I had with a past (traditional) window unit. I dont know if it was my imagination, but in bed at night with the window unit I was itching a lot. Wonder if chiggers were getting in, if that's even possible. and I've seen it mentioned on a YT review by a guy who has one of these mideas. He said spiders and ants were getting in with the midea. That's my fear. But they were getting in the little holes at the bottom, which you could either caulk or midea is now including sticky foam to seal up. The rest of the side seal son this guys installation looks solid, but he didn't even mention or look at the underside, under the main control block where the other guy had issues.
      Besides the idea if my central breaks, another idea I've had is to get one of these for just my room. I live alone and as such only need my bedroom cooled all night. And I like it cold (68) at night, but warm (~74) during the day. However, I'm wildly guessing I might save 30 a month, for the maybe 8-9 months of summer a year (I live in Texas, heh) thats 240-270 a year savings best case. So that would probably take a couple years to even pay off the unit. Just not sure it's worth 240 a year to lose the comfort and convenience of central AC currently. For example, having the rest of the house be hot initially when starting off the day, etc. But I'm considering it!

    • @cryengine_x
      @cryengine_x 3 года назад +5

      @Chill Will "repairing" a central unit is extremely expensive, almost any small repair will cost at least $1000 in my opinion which is the same cost as two of these Midea (12000 BTU unit, the 8000 BTU in the vid is 368)
      For example after I moved into my house, about 3 yrs in the AC just stopped working. IIRC it was a freon leak. The guy told me it was the compressor, would be at least $1800. BUT it was compressor that uses the old Freon, which the EPA banned so it would be extremely expensive, and hard to find, if I ever had a Freon leak or anything in the future. IIRC it was like hundreds of dollars to fill up the old freon. Or I could just get a new unit and be on the new Freon which would be available in the future. And the decision was mine. I weighed everything and just went with the new unit, which the big places in town were wanting $4500 to do, this was 8 years ago in a rural area on a 1100 sq ft house. I found a mom n pop guy who did it for I believe 3400 hundred, and thank goodness he did a good job. The thing is the EPA is always banning freon, I believe they have done it again at least with cars, so you are always going to be on the "old" freon forever and basically need a new unit. I also very recently had thermostat issues, and that ended up actually costing me about 500 dollars (!). Just recently I had leaking issues with the air handler in the attic too (drain line clogged) With central you have a air handler, and ducting in the attic. It's very complex. So much that can go wrong and cost big dollars. I am dreading the inevitable probably when my heat strips wear out. This is why mini splits are gaining popularity. If you look at it, ducting is really a pretty complicated, inefficient way to do things.
      All I'm saying is if you're broke, and suddenly faced with a $4k-$10k HVAC repair bill, buying a window unit for 200 or 300 or even 500 as at least a stopgap starts sounding pretty dang good.
      Since I live clone and only need my bedroom heated/cooled at night, cooling/heating the whole house just for the bedroom is also very inefficient as well. For this reason I already got a space heater, which is easy and cheap. But I would like to figure out a cooling solution. Either a portable AC or one of these Mideas. $400 for either is a lot though just to take a flyer!
      I mean I agree central is definitely the best solution if you can afford it. If you dont mind just paying thousands to repair if needed. But with Democrats in power more and more of us will be poor, and it may be a luxury we dont have.

    • @cryengine_x
      @cryengine_x 3 года назад

      @Chill Will if youre under warranty. I got a ten yr warranty on my new unit and time freaking flies, it's already like 8 yrs in. In 2 yrs I wont be covered. Warranty is also parts only. Probably half the cost of a major repair is labor. The $200 you quote is basically just a service call minimum. So yeah if he can come out, fix it within a half hour and the part is paid for by warranty. So something small like a capacitor. Anyways i thought ten was standard, thats what I got on my goodman brand. Maybe you paid extra for an extended warranty.
      All I'm saying is IF the warranty is out and a big repair comes up, slapping in a window unit will be tempting! You gotta admit these Mideas's are really nice. But it depends on a lot of factors of course. Hopefully my unit will keep going for many years to come. It should.

    22:00 I have vinyl replacement windows that are similar to yours. What I would do to prevent any possibility of voiding the warranty on the windows by drilling any holes, is get either a 1 inch dowel, or a 1 inch by 1 inch piece of wood, measure and cut it to length from the top of the lower window sash, up to the top of the window frame. If your measurements are precise enough, you won't need anything to hold the "lock" in place. You can also paint the wood to match the color of your window to almost camouflage it. For added security, put one of these on each side of your window. I really like this because it doesn't put a lot of downward pressure on the vinyl window frame like a traditional window A/C does.

    The air conditioner is amazing. Unbelievably more quiet than any other window unit I've ever seen. It's pretty close to the noise level of a mini split at maybe 10% of the cost of a mini split.
    That said, it's a very complex installation depending on your window type. I'm pretty handy, I've done house projects for 40 years, and this took me 3 solid hours. The whole thing is really well designed, I can't fault the equipment or supplies (I love the bag of extra screws/pins, very thoughtful) and the Midea installation instructions (assuming you watch the video 10 times and really absorb it) is very good.

I'm an older guy and lifting the box onto the cart and then into the van gave me pause even though it's only about 60lbs, but after seeing the way you installed yours I know I can handle it from inside where the window is 30 inches from the floor as opposed to 5 feet on the outside. I’ve had a Midea unit for about three years - probably a newer model than this one because it also has an eco mode option to save energy. But when it’s extremely hot and / or humid you can take it off economy mode for a more powerful cooling effect.
    It’s a fantastic unit. Effective, quiet, has decent options and settings: cool, dry, fan, cool and dry combo, 3 speeds, a timer, remote control. There’s a setting that allows the lever (flow of air) to move up and down slightly, or stay still.
    In Maine, summers are brutally humid on top of the heat (this year it’s often been 70% or higher, so it’s like a sauna) so the option of drying the air is valuable.
    I’ll never go back to those traditional noisy units that are a PITA to install and ultimately don’t work as well.
    If you’re on the fence about buying this, just do it. You won’t regret it.

I do have whole house AC that couldnt quite cool this 3rd floor giganic room. Whats nice is now I don't have to run my whole house AC nearly as much and wil save $$. As far as opening the window I really see no need to let wasp and other flying insects so I don't care about that feature. Now if you are going to open the window remove the gray insulation that fills that void or it will get tucked in between the panes which is a pain lol. As far as mini blinds go YES they will fit behind the unit and you can use the wand to tilt them open and closed. Finally I purchased the three year extended warranty and after reading the manual it says it has a 5 year limited warranty so I'll be cancelling that warranty and get my 75 bucks back. Final thoughts. BUY IT and stay cool! A big thanks to The Fixer!

    Great window A/C, bought (2) 8000BTU units last summer after researching. Found a comment about Mosquito attraction, after looking it over, I don't doubt it, there's no drainage at the low spots underneath.
    It supposedly evaporates the water, some other A/C manufacture's make the same claim, but under high humidity conditions, your going to have standing water...trust me.
    Lots of engineering went into this A/C unit, but Midea really should have made drain holes at the low points (perhaps an oversight), some window A/C’s do, preferably with a hose attachment option.
    This doesn’t detract from it, just lay it on its side, prick-punch and drill one ¼” hole on each side at the low spot. Probably can just drill one hole, but there are two specific low pocket points on each side, and I didn’t want any water accumulating that might attract mosquito’s. Be SUPER CAREFULL not to let the drill poke-through much at all, because there’s radiator coils very close by, so ease off when the drill is about to go through.
    I was very glad I took the time to do this after seeing water pouring off my porch roof corner on hot humid summer days, no mosquito's here.

    The thing I like the best about that unit, was how efficient it is. It is also super quiet, so I agree with that. It doesn't run full blast if it doesn't need to, it takes the approach of running all the time at a lower pump speed to maintain the cold verse traditional units. Right now, there is only a handful of window units that support the inverter style compressor. LG, Frigidaire, Midea, and Danby (which is a rebranded slightly different looking Midea U.)
