I love the part where he is in a rage and as soon as he sees his father it's calm for a few minutes and he slowly walks towards David Banner but still looking tense, and we are shown a glimpse of what happened when he was just a kid and it engrages him further, probably the most memorable and fondess scene I have ever watched.
This scene is just perfect. It really encapsulates that horrific monster within Bruce. The visual anger shown by Banna is so good. Not only is it showing all that repressed anger and that of holding back his childhood trauma only then do you get to see the hulk “break out” because of that. Bruce is trying to hold it back but that only makes the hulk want to break out more. This is how you should portray the hulks transformation as this isn’t a comfortable thing to go through as are a lot of our repressed memories but one way or another that anger could manifest into some horrific things.
I don't think we realize sometimes how deep this scene is for Hulk. Bruce didn't know David as he was, didn't even recognize him. David had to tell him, convince him. HULK, being the subconscious persona. Not only remembered David by sight, but he recalled other occasions leading up to Edith's death, entire memories with his Father. Something Bruce couldn't do due to the split and or refused to do. When Hulk freaks out, he chose to leave in frustration, instead of killing him right there. Showing there's still some kind of attachment on Hulk's part to David, inner conflict, anger. He's not the mindless beast i thought he was when i was a kid, it's insane how much characterization he gets here vs All the Avengers movies put together. Not being a smartass, i'm dead serious, all 4 put together. *THIS Hulk has more depth, deadass.*
yeah, this movie takes a way more personal approach to the character, a story around the drama of a father and son. Not everyone accepts this path, that's why many disliked. I like this kinda of approach, so I'm fine.
Yes this is why I love it mainly because Hulk is the physical embodiment of banners rage sadness and guilt that he's built up over the years so his rage and sadness mainly stemmed from his father hurting him in his mother that's why Hulk would probably remember because it's like Hulk was already there he was there from the start that's what they kind of hinted at at the beginning he knew everything that was happening but couldn't do anything about it he's been there since the beginning watching learning kinda learning
So many people give this movie shit for the cgi. Yeah it doesn't hold up in some scenes but in others he Looks better than cgi characters in modern blockbusters. Mainly justice league. They used motion capture for this, so that might factor into it.
@@Sebastianx007 right!, But the main complaint is the cgi. I don't understand why people hate it. There's so much detail in the hulk scenes that most people take for granted.
I love the detail of Bruce tripping over the mop bucket at around 0:22. He was already at critical mass, and then one more little problem comes his way and finally triggers the meltdown. Or, I could just be over analyzing the scene.
Wait, after years I finally noticed that and after a year working as a dish washer I can confirm that using coping mechanisms to stay calm all day just to trip over a mop bucket can results in...well...hulking out. I'm sorry to all the ladies that had to watch me slam trays into the wash-pit and clang glasses together to keep me from melting down in worse ways. Also, don't be a dish washer. @@isinganddootherthings4616 That really depends, some artists depict him as much bigger than that, though even in those cases, as hulk he generally doesn't start small and get bigger, he just is that big from the start.

FWIW: I think *this* Hulk movie was *much better* than [a lot of people] give it credit for.. I saw this when it first came out, and I liked it - and still do. My daughter - who was about 17 when at the time - also saw it, and she still agrees with me. I *also* liked Sam Elliott's portrayal of General Ross.
It is better than what people say but it’s still not a great movie. It’s good... most times but it’s not great. The Hulk scenes could’ve been better tbh but they did portray the Hulk really well

I've never seen more effort put into CGI since Avatar. Amazing story so dramatic and terrifying you feel the pain if both father and son. I've never seen a movie this emotional and dazzling since

@Hugo Balls Foulkes That's a design choice but personally I don't mind the hulk being too green. Photorealism is what matters. At 2:25 for example you wouldn't think the hulk was cgi the way you see the water shine off him.
@@thefan974 the lack of lighting also plays a factor in that. He’s clearly cgi when he’s covered in liquid when he emerges from the ground in San Francisco
Due to his father's "super immune system" experiments in Bruce and the memories suppressed during his childhood, Bruce own mind managed to manifest the gamma radiation into a "Backdoor" for Bruce to survive the gamma blast. Allowing his anger which clearly is triggered by those memories and his current anger to any issue to display the gamma side of Bruce, creating the Hulk.
Genuinely love this movie to this day. Sure, it can be too dramatic at times, but the fact that Ang and co really focused on Banners childhood trauma and turmoil makes this the film that stays the most true to his character, especially if you loved and integrate Peter David's work in the comics. This first transformation still unsettles me to this day. Absolutely underrated Hulk in my opinion. Would be really cool to see this version brought back somehow.
This transformation is just iconic. Reminiscent of the Wolfman transformation... it's supposed to look agonisingly painful as the bones and muscles grow and shift.
The amount of detail of sweat and water on the pores of his skin is actually still pretty impressive by today’s standards. ILM did an amazing job for 2003. I think that while the proportions of his design may be a bit less humanistic than the 2008 & 2012-> hulks, the way he moves and the textures of his skin at certain moments rival the newer ones. What Ang Lee and the Vfx team capture perfectly in this scene in particular is the lighting.
This, Ghost Rider & all 3 of the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy are still childhood favourites of mine to this day, always entertained & always reenacted during my time playing on jungle gyms outside :)
The way David got a closer look at Hulk and rubs the side of his face..its like he knew that it was his son Bruce..and the way Hulk was growling angrily at David like he realised that was his father
He’d still get his ass kick, even harder than the MCU one. This Hulk passed out after fighting gamma dogs. MCU Hulk lasted like 3 minutes against Thor who let me remind you is a God. He even fought a mythical dog that God’s fight. As cool as this Hulk is, he’s going down.
@@dead0ntime Indeed. People forget that Thanos has the ability to manipulate "cosmic" energy. That is power on an insanely HIGHER level. Even without the gauntlet Thanos is still crazy powerful. I love the Hulk and have been a fan of him for years but Thanos is still on a higher platform in terms of raw power. This was the first time I was ever introduced to Hulk as a kid. I played the video game, I had the green gloves that I wish I still had today. The acting with Bana, The Lighting, The Direction, The Cinematography IS MOODY, DRAMTIC AND COMPLETELY AWESOME. That's Ang Lee & Freddy Elmes right there.
I think this film is better than its reputation suggests. It's nothing outstanding, but every performance is solid. The visual effects range from pretty good, especially for its time, to meh and occasionally bad. It can be a bit dull, but it's never frustrating or annoying to watch like a lot of films now. It's fascinating in its uniqueness, how quietly introspective it is, especially in the current climate of superhero movies. Props to Ang Lee for trying something different here. Also, minor tidbit, but I love the fact that Ang Lee performed the motion capture for the Hulk himself.

They honestly couldn’t figure out how to make a disturbing dark marvel character fit in with everyone else. Hulk is a Wolverine/Deadpool/punisher/ghost rider/etc… type of character and they just made him like a little too heroic/peaceful
Eric Bana playing hulk was very frustrating for him because by what he said “You go from ‘Black Hawk Down’ where you’re shooting mainly daytime, exteriors, natural light. Boom: out in the world. To suddenly, I’m playing a scientist and I’m in a lab or a house, indoors. “There’s this other movie going on with green screen that I have nothing to do with, because that’s the Hulk. It’s the other actors that are playing in that space. So in some ways it felt like a tiny movie because the reality for me was every day was interior, studio, one room, very few big scenes. Lots of dialogue. I don’t like working indoors.” so after doing hulk he pretty much refuse to play hulk again after that and for Edward Norton’s Hulk the reason why he did not return for hulk was because he "wanted more diversity" with his career, and did not want to be associated with only one character. So Norton did not hate the role just didn’t want to get stuck with one character.
This is my favorite hulk. Absorbing Man was an amazing villain and the fact that everytime he gets angry, he grows a few meters tall. My favorite scene was when Hulk was falling off from the jet at san francisco, and there was this bathroom scene in which hulk just grabs bruce from the mirror and takes him back, as like Hulk needs actually some help.
Vs
The ending is one of my favorite endings ever in a movie

How he can jump large distances (like miles at a time)
MCU hulk is great and Mark Ruffalo has done a great job but the actual hulk parts could have been better done

The amount of detail of sweat and water on the pores of his skin is actually still pretty impressive by today’s standards. ILM did an amazing job for 2003. 2003 and 2008 hulks are the best Hulks to ever exist. The thing that went wrong with Avengers is they didn’t get Bana or Norton
I agree
