    The Hulk is this. Hes not just a big green smashing thing. Hes a combination and a product of all the abuse and repression someone holds down for their entire life. The hulks whole arc as a character is a meditation on what anger can do to you psychologically. And since everyone likes deep dark depictions of comic characters, I have a feeling that if the cgi were a bit updated and it were released now, it wouldve done better.

      I'm pretty sure Hulk is the alter ego that Bruce always had, the angry Bruce that protected him from all the shit his dad and other bullies gave him as he grew up and was made to a real person after the gamma accident. Perhaps the calm was a bit of real-Bruce getting a look at his father the way he remembered him through the shell of truth the Hulk bore for him.

      Not all MCU films fail on superhero backstories. If you look at the backstories of Tony Stark, Natasha Romanoff, Hawkeye, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Ramond. You can see they followed the comics to a T.

    • @thepermanentshockedface9177
      @thepermanentshockedface9177 4 года назад +22

      @Jeremy Schafer I full heartedly agree with you. The thing which bothered me a lot was how the critics complained about the movie of Hulk 2003 being too long, and the acting being too monotonous which I heavily disagree upon. Ang Lee crafted a movie with heart and seriousness because the hulk isn't a joke. The reason why we don't see more hulk movies is because Hollywood can't cater it to a full audience.. They want to be able to introduce the movie to kids when that idea goes against who and what the hulk is.
      Edward Norton's hulk movie was great in the sense that it showcased the Horror aspects of the hulk, from the music and the beast like nature of him. Of course that movie came out how it did from how much he involvement he put but when it came time for the sequel, they dropped him because he was "too difficult to work with".
      I know I'm going off topic a little but thats an example of how Hollywood don't give a shit about making a movie that people will remember, rather they'd dumb down characters just so kids can have a laugh. We all may have different sense of humour and some humour is good for the movie but completely transforming the hulk into a JOKE is unforgivable.. The hulk is tragedy incarnate and everything he touches is destoryed.

    • @thepermanentshockedface9177
      @thepermanentshockedface9177 4 года назад +12

      @Jeremy Schafer it's horrible honestly. I sat through Avengers Endgame without feeling little emotion while the theater was full of tears with the ending. It didn't hit me how I wanted because the movie kept taking me out with jokes and lack of seriousness.... Anime can make me cry more than any MCU movie did. The ending to the Hulk almost made me tear up because as we saw with the ending after Bruce's father died, he remembered one of the few wholesome memories which was his dad kissing him and saying "sweet dreams". Eventhough he hated his dad, he still held on to those memories. Small things like that is what makes a character so beautifully portrayed.
      Critics be damned too because we know the movie was way ahead of its time and not to mention the hypocrisy of the review. The main issue with them was the movie being too long but the incredible Hulk movie was around the same length yet they praised it. I'm guessing because it had more action? It goes to show these critics know fuck all about real movies and character. The incredible Hulk may have had better action but lacked character depth and emotional weight.

  • @Vintalo
    @Vintalo 2 года назад +86

    This scene is just perfect. It really encapsulates that horrific monster within Bruce. The visual anger shown by Banna is so good. Not only is it showing all that repressed anger and that of holding back his childhood trauma only then do you get to see the hulk “break out” because of that. Bruce is trying to hold it back but that only makes the hulk want to break out more. This is how you should portray the hulks transformation as this isn’t a comfortable thing to go through as are a lot of our repressed memories but one way or another that anger could manifest into some horrific things.

  • @lessermook7608
    @lessermook7608 4 года назад +801

    I don't think we realize sometimes how deep this scene is for Hulk.
    Bruce didn't know David as he was, didn't even recognize him. David had to tell him, convince him.
    HULK, being the subconscious persona. Not only remembered David by sight, but he recalled other occasions leading up to Edith's death, entire memories with his Father. Something Bruce couldn't do due to the split and or refused to do.
    When Hulk freaks out, he chose to leave in frustration, instead of killing him right there. Showing there's still some kind of attachment on Hulk's part to David, inner conflict, anger.
    He's not the mindless beast i thought he was when i was a kid, it's insane how much characterization he gets here vs All the Avengers movies put together.
    Not being a smartass, i'm dead serious, all 4 put together. *THIS Hulk has more depth, deadass.*

    I think this film is better than its reputation suggests. It's nothing outstanding, but every performance is solid. The visual effects range from pretty good, especially for its time, to meh and occasionally bad. It can be a bit dull, but it's never frustrating or annoying to watch like a lot of films now. It's fascinating in its uniqueness, how quietly introspective it is, especially in the current climate of superhero movies. Props to Ang Lee for trying something different here.
    Also, minor tidbit, but I love the fact that Ang Lee performed the motion capture for the Hulk himself.

    • @thegamerman1097

      Eric Bana playing hulk was very frustrating for him because by what he said “You go from ‘Black Hawk Down’ where you’re shooting mainly daytime, exteriors, natural light. Boom: out in the world. To suddenly, I’m playing a scientist and I’m in a lab or a house, indoors. “There’s this other movie going on with green screen that I have nothing to do with, because that’s the Hulk. It’s the other actors that are playing in that space. So in some ways it felt like a tiny movie because the reality for me was every day was interior, studio, one room, very few big scenes. Lots of dialogue. I don’t like working indoors.” so after doing hulk he pretty much refuse to play hulk again after that and for Edward Norton’s Hulk the reason why he did not return for hulk was because he "wanted more diversity" with his career, and did not want to be associated with only one character. So Norton did not hate the role just didn’t want to get stuck with one character.

    My favorite scene was when Hulk was falling off from the jet at san francisco, and there was this bathroom scene in which hulk just grabs bruce from the mirror and takes him back, as like Hulk needs actually some help.
    Great movie really.

    This Hulk is the one I grew up with.
    Not some cheap or toned down hulk.
    MCU made Hulk a lot weaker and a joke.
    This is the HULK that I Know. A powerful being capable of destroying buildings with ease, a monster that can go berserk at any moment and destroy everything in his path with no discrimination.
    This Hulk was more brooding and powerful than any other Hulk portrayed in movies.
    This one not only looks amazing givin the age of the film, but as well as this Hulk would kick the new professor hulks wimpy ass any day, and this Hulk is not just bigger than Thanos, but This Hulk would definitely not run from him.
