What makes me enjoyed the ending more is the metaphor of how intense Bruce’s trauma, anger and hatred which becomes so unbearable to his father it ends up killing him. Speaks volume of how much he hated his father and I’m sure during the last of his father’s moments absorbing he sees and feels exactly why Bruce felt all these intense feelings. Kind of like a ‘fuck you’ to his father hence “You think you can live with it? Take it” and his father just couldn’t live with the immeasurable amount of anger and trauma he gave Bruce. It’s not that deep really but I absolutely adore not taking things as surface value
actually it is pretty deep. few movies deal successfully with the trauma that parents inflict on their children, and it is a cool and big deal that one of them is a giant blockbuster comic book movie from 2003.
@@TheBaBaTV Actually in the comics Dr Bruce Banner was in charge of inventing a 'Gamma bomb' and when it was being tested some kid named Rick Jones was going to be in the blast radius. Bruce got him out but couldn't save himself in time resulting in the Hulk. In later comics it's revealed that the Hulk's rageful yet somewhat infantile mentality is due to the severe abuse Bruce recieved from his father. Bruce supressed it but when he was mutated by the radiation all his childhood trauma manifested in the Hulk
I knew as a kid it was because Hulk was basically a powerhouse, but rewatching it now it all makes MUCH more sense. “Take it all” to Absorption Man yelling “It’s not stopping! Take it back!” Realizing he can’t control that much power This hulk really showed HULK from the comics and now I know why the other hulks seemed to be missing something
More like trying to please a woman like do you want it or not, like fuck pick one for crying out loud I swear this main villain has to be the dumbest made up character ever hopefully he doesn't exist in the comic cause I bet he's like his movie counter part " take it back " crying like a bitch smh
I remember watching this movie as a kid and the part at 2:42 where he said "TAKE IT ALL" has been embedded into my memory since i first heard it. We felt his anger through the screen. Such a powerful line and a brilliant movie 👏
His power is fueled by his anger. He had literally so much hate for his father that the power he was giving him was too much for him to handle despite the dads ability was literally absorbing anything. Even without the nuke he probably would of exploded. The "Take it all" quote and the dads groans of pain gave me goosebumps when I first saw this.
Dr. David Banner could absorb PHYSICAL elements, but he could not absorb the EMOTIONAL and PSYCHOLOGICAL elements (or maybe he can, but it's too much).
Probably one of the coolest most subversive fights in a superhero movie. You couldn’t predict how hulk was gonna defeat absorbing man until it happened.
Actually at last the hulk says "take it all" starts giving all the energy to absorbing man. But the absorbing man realised that hulk's energy is so massive that he can't absorb and control all the energy and absorbing man becomes like a giant bubble. After that the USAF drops a nuclear bomb and the absorbing man dies. But hulk survived
2:40 Now THAT'S visual storytelling! All of his tragic memories coming back together like puzzle and formed Hulk. For better or worse, your past shapes who you are, you'll have to live with it, you can't throw them away, all you can do is try to be a better person and don't let them dictate you
Ingenious observation, I too struggle with my past, running and trying to be a different person, don't think I've ever knew who I really was. I think that's why hulk is the marvel character I resonate with the most.
@@chimpindoge3474 Bruce only said "You think you can take all of this?" and the visual conveyed what he meant, instead of a long explanatory monologues. This is right out of the comic book. So many films came from books originally, probably easier to do that...this masterpiece captures the essence of the HULK story...the girl and her father....his own father.. and his anger. The best HULK film, EVER.
This movie understood that Hulk is a tortured soul. Underneath all the super strength, destruction, rage and green gamma radiation is a scared and angry child. A child that's constantly watching everything he loves and cares for be taken away from him in the cruelest ways possible. As a kid watching this, I was too young to understand what it is that I felt for Hulk, but I definitely felt something. Usually I felt sad for Hulk, or just didn't understand the gravity of the events transpiring and their implications for how deeply scarred it left Bruce's mind. But now I can see the awful reality that is Hulk's existence, and it hits deep.
The difference between this film and the modern Superhero blockbuster is that this film was made by an auteur filmmaker, Oscar Winner Ang Lee, who has a totally different sentimentality than most blockbuster filmmakers. This is one of the most experimental comic book movies. A very interesting case study.
True. I can't really call it a overall >good< movie, but I feel Ang Lee had the absolute right angle to this character on the emotional level. The way he did it, with all the visual experiments is pretty heavy hit & miss though. There are some nice ideas, but then there is also a lot of unintentionally silly stuff and some ideas just don't work. Still, definintely interesting to pick apart.
@@virgogaming6488 the incredible hulk is pretty good. The subject are not the same. in the incredible hulk , the Hulk is presented as a real monster , with frankestein vibes. I think this is more the hulk of the actualité mcu which isn t that good. It s my opinion.
Bruce's father wasn't aware of one very crucial fact when he tried to take the power of the Hulk for himself. It isn't just the gamma energy that makes Bruce the Hulk. It's all of that pain and rage as well.Combined together with that gamma energy,it creates that perfect storm that is the Incredible Hulk.
Same here,I can so relate to this movie,I took up bodybuilding from a young age as kind of protection from my abusive father,I'm 50 now and I'm still Mentally scarred
This monstrous / nightmare version of the hulk is always gonna be MILES better than the comedic Hulk in Endgame. 2003 and 2008’s hulk actually makes hulk look scary and intimidating the way he’s supposed to be.
Definitely, the new hulk is not even the half of this, to much soft/cheesy/childish, they ruined so many great heroes, and they will keep doing so for a longtime until disney handles this.
Thats cause the endgame hulk isnt based off of old canonicity. He is based off of professor hulk, who is a combination of bruce and hulk. He's designed to be more human

the theme song in this hulk movie is something else, ill immediately recognize it forever. it has an eerily investigative and scientific tone to it and makes me feel like im diving deep under the iceberg to see what good or bad hides underneath
I've always thought that "TAKE IT ALL" doesn't just refer to the power of the Hulk. It's Bruce's pain, his trauma, all that emotional pain that turned him into the green monster. Bruce's dad can't absorb his son's pain, he doesn't understand it, he can't do it. It's such a big pain to have witnessed your father kill your mother. Bruce's dad doesn't consider this, and is defeated by the trauma it caused to his son. A beautiful movie
Ang Lee had actually created a tragedy. A destruction of father son relationship with high emotional quotient, simply bcoz of the father's insane and abusive mind. Too bad the film didn't get sufficient praise at that time.
In a lot of ways it's actually still my favourite hulk movie. The MCU's hulk has better CGI, but I never liked how his size was capped at that, his strength too, because they had to make him fit in with the other characters and make a fair fight for the enemies.
I think the problem was the effects were terrible and this was after all a movie that comic book fans went to see. That whole fight in the clouds scene made no sense and the battle at the lake was so dark I had no idea what was going on outside of the dialog.
@@KenS1267 Yes, that I agree with. The finale fight could have been much better with today's effects. That's fair to criticize. But criticizing the whole movie for the sake of bad effects is not good
@@14debanjan Even with the effects of the time this could have been better. It just looked cheap and like no one cared. This was a full decade after Jurassic Park. which was IMO the first file to use CG "characters" well, but look at the two and tell me you'd be able to tell that from them.
Just watching this scene reminds me of how much of an artist Ang Lee is. I never understood the hate for this film. There’s a lot of good stuff in it, especially the action.
It's a slow burn, but I feel it goes more into the inner turmoil Bruce faces, and has some nice drama. Sure the effects don't hold up, but that was the best people could do back in the day. It's not even a bad film, like, at all.
I want Ang Lee back for Hulk movies because She-Hulk just trashed Hulk's character so damn hard. Just compare the creative directors' and their visions for the movie/show that their creating and you can definitely see which team has more passion over the project their working on in the behind the scenes shit.
Their battle among the stormclouds at the beginning is brilliant. We only see these separate powerful images, like we're reading a comic book in the flash of lightning.

@@reyescalante221 The Hulk of the comics and the Hulk of the MCU are two different entities. You cannot take comic feats out of context and throw them into the MCU. The MCU has different power scaling for characters than the comics. For example, in the comics, Hulk once bruteforced and lifted Thor's hammer. But in the movies, Hulk tried that in Avengers 1 and wasn't able to. You have to analyze the movies and shows, not the comics.

It was pretty good in cinema. I always defended this movie against critics even after the Ed Norton incredible hulk came out I still loved this one more
When his father yelled “ take it back it’s not stopping, take it back!” Meaning he couldn’t handle all that power and suffering and futility, it was too much power for him
@Aaron -_- That and there were other reasons, the chief one being Norton couldn't handle the idea that the Hulk was NOT going to be the center of focus. He was going to be as much a part of the MCU as everyone else, a change that he really couldn't handle, being one of the bigger actors than the others who were attached at the time, a decision that he would later regret.
@@JarrettMazza Everybody knows Hulk is not really a superhero, at least in his early days he is just confused and hurt. Many stories about that in the comics. This is the Hulk that was worth developing.

I always felt like I understood the whole power absorbing and giving aspect of this scene as a kid, but having just rewatched the film, I realize just how poetic it truly is. A big theme of the movie is the pain and fear and loneliness passed on from father to child. A family torn apart by ambition and ego. The trauma that Bruce inherited from his father is so immense, it’s why he’s the Hulk in the first place; all that he got from his father, it made him different his whole life, the trauma transformed him metaphorically and literally. And here, his father wants it back, but for Bruce, that trauma and rage is depthless, and his father has no inkling of how deep and powerful it is. The “You think you can live with it?” Is all the more powerful, plus the fact that his father can’t take it, can’t handle even a taste of it.
“You think you can live with it? Take it. TAKE IT ALL!” a few moments later.. “IT’S NOT STOPPING!” Love that interaction. Just shows that The Hulk truly has infinite power
Wasn't his power that wasn't stopping, it was the trauma, the pain, and the anger. Every thing the Hulk embodies, he had to feel, and it never stopped.
When I was a kid, what scared me the most about David was the feeling of invincibility he pass. In his electric form, Hulk punched him and didn't seem to affect him. He fell to the ground, with such force of impact that it created a crater, but only returned as a rock and unaffected. The Hulk tried to drown him by throwing him into the water, but he only came back in an even more powerful water form. It was like he said “no matter what you throw at me or do to me, I won't die”.
This fight is actually great... Absorbing man grabs hulk and takes him to a remote location in an attempt to isolate him and steal his power. Hulk tries to out-strength AM but this doesn't work because AM just absorbs whatever he's impacted with. Hulk shows a submission to Banner as Hulk realizes he needs Banner's mind to defeat this enemy. AM pulls Hulk underwater where Hulk cannot escape and holds Hulk there to absorb his power. AM's power increases as he saps Hulk's strength--this causes AM to absorb the energy of his surroundings. Banner and Hulk work together to fight AM, with Banner legitimately wanting to be relieved of his curse. As Hulk gains power the angrier he gets, the power just kept increasing more and more. AM had a maximum capacity that he could absorb and the nuke just pushed him past his limit. It's like over-charging a battery until it explodes.
Actually at last the hulk says "take it all" starts giving all the energy to absorbing man. But the absorbing man realised that hulk's energy is so massive that he can't absorb and control all the energy and absorbing man becomes like a giant bubble. I watched this yesterday, and i've never been so split & saddened by this fight. More so than i was during Endgame, deadass. *The movie started with them play fighting with stuffed animals when Bruce was a child, PLAY fighting.* Now they're crashing through Thunderclouds in a scuffle like Greek GODS, fighting each other, struggling. David wanted to cure Bruce first, afraid of what he'd become or mutate into because of his own (David's) actions, now he's obsessed with taking what Bruce has, the same thing he was afraid of. Mainly to combat Ross & The Gov. Organization that put him away, the same ones that took away his chance to possibly cure Bruce; Which lead to him storming into that house to enact a bizarre decision to mercy kill his boy, sealing Edith's fate. She would be heartbroken to see them fighting like this.
I consider this directly connected to Hulk 2008. This film shows how Hulk transformed and after his dad went essentially crazy, Bruce basically didn’t talk about his family history at all compared to the other Avengers, who all have families, except Black Widow, who USED to have a family.
2:36 the moment Bruce and hulk agree on hating you is the moment you lost. In one way or another they are both children scared of thier father, but not anymore. You want all you've done to me? Then Take It
Also an addition, when the villian has to Beg the hero to take the power back? That's awesome. Just a sorta "now you understand why I didn't want this in the first place"
I think he was a little of both. He tried to turn himself into a Gamma Creature at the beginning but didn't work out, he only became a pale version of the Hulk. He couldn't absorb all the Hulk's power because he had a limited/finite capacity of a container where the Hulk's container was infinite - the Madder he got, the stronger he got and the larger his container became. Dear dad couldn't handle it.
While as an adult I have a much better understanding what the movie was trying to say, this is still a very confusing fight scene to watch. Still an underrated film.

Looking at this scene as an adult, I think Ang Lee knew exactly what he was doing with the "Take It Back" scene. There's a giant mass that looks like clouds, with noticeable separations all over it, surrounded by the water of the lake and the images of Bruce's childhood. _It's symbolic of a clouded mind drowning in years of trauma._
This was a criminally underrated flick IMO. Still has some of the best sound design elements of all of the MCU. Sure, it's long, but there are some AWESOME set pieces in this film.
Some of the best 'fight' scenes ever presented albeit symbolically, that "TAKE IT ALL" scene really burns into my memory. The end really shows the irony of a megalomaniac: desires for all the powers & yet couldn't even comprehended & contained the issues of a single person, worse it's his own son's.
This is how Hulk should be portrayed, as a horror in some sense because his strength is infinite and scary. Only his humanity (Bruce Banner) stops him from being a total monster. The mental illness that would result from this as Hulk is what should be portrayed. He should be feared by the audience but understood as well because the transformation is really a tragedy. No one should leave a Hulk movie wanting to be Hulk.
Ang Lee’s Hulk remains my favorite Hulk movie. The movie also stands as one of the most epic and memorable comic book movies. The Marvel movies today just jump from action scene to action scene with forgettable characters.
Ang Lee, Eric Bana, Louis Leterrier, and Edward Norton, understood the complexity, and emotional and psychological anguish of Bruce Banner and Hulk. They understood that Hulk was just a manifestation of Banner’s trauma, a monstrous amalgamation of his suffering. 03’s Hulk and 08’s The Incredible Hulk are massively underrated films. The MCU’s Hulk is just the punch line of a bad joke.
Just the sheer amount of power the Hulk has is remarkable, the way they showed it to us, how the power within him is not just the power of Hulk but the combination of the trauma that Bruce has faced throughout his life, how much the two feed on each other and build up into this massive green destructive creature, truly extraordinary. And then there is Joss Whedon's Hulk...
Eric Bana and this Hulk was literally a perfect representation of hulk IMO. I know the plot and the way they designed Hulk in this movie was a little off, but it’s way better than that goofy doofus Mark Ruffalo
This movie may have a lot of flaws. But as far as being a REAL accurate representation of the Hulk it's 10/10. Hulk is more than just a strong dude with a cranky attitude. He also has different powers he utilizes when he gets angry. Marvel really screwed up the new Hulk.
one of the most confusing fights from my childhood

But guess what, it’s not as bad as being catcalled.
Coming back here to say Shehulk has it worse because of Catcalling.
How he became hulk origin is false though.. his dad didnt pass on genetics… Bruce was in charge of making a super serum and tested it himself…
Take it back!” Realizing he can’t control that much power

Dr. David Banner could absorb PHYSICAL elements, but he could not absorb the EMOTIONAL and PSYCHOLOGICAL elements (or maybe he can, but it's too much).

I watched this yesterday, and i've never been so split & saddened by this fight. More so than i was during Endgame, deadass.
*The movie started with them play fighting with stuffed animals when Bruce was a child, PLAY fighting.*
Now they're crashing through Thunderclouds in a scuffle like Greek GODS, fighting each other, struggling.

Fun Fact: Fans say Hulks Father turns into some version of Zzax, an electic marvel villain. He also appears to be some type of absorbing man.
I remember being straight up terrified of this Hulk 😂 especially when he started to scream after saying “ TAKE IT ALLLLL”
@@robertnicholls9917 just imagine what he would look like with modern cgi
I love how Jennifer Connelly's acting is literally just one expression throughout the entire movie.
This hulk was ruthless. So much more powerful than Eric and mark that we have saw. He actually got more powerful and bigger as he got more mad.
Agree, Hulk was badly flanderized in the MCU because it was aimed for PG-13 rating
Incredible Hulk is MCU…. But I get what you mean
*I like how this fight feels like Bruce was finally able to control Hulk to defeat his father.*
"Not control, but maybe aim"
2:58 the way how he is screaming thats telling how much hulk and bruce wanted to let it out for a long time with such anger and pain
That fight in the clouds with Elfmans theme in the background is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.
2:57 that angriness that fight legendary for me!
3:05 sounds like the Grinch lol
Just the sheer amount of power the Hulk has is remarkable, the way they showed it to us, how the power within him is not just the power of Hulk but the combination of the trauma that Bruce has faced throughout his life, how much the two feed on each other and build up into this massive green destructive creature, truly extraordinary.
And then there is Joss Whedon's Hulk...
Coming back here realizing her dad was the first ghost rider 😄
oh my god, it's truue !!
Any also Patrick swayze partner off of road house 1989
Wait what?!! Can u explain
@@redfive6020 Sam Neil played Carter Slade, the original Ghost Rider out of the old American West, in Nicholas Cage's Ghost Rider movie.
@@danieldickson8591 Sam Elliot, not Sam Neil
I loved the TAKE It ALL scene it was a fusion of both Bruce and Hulk working together to finally beat Bruce’s suppressor.
Eric Bana and this Hulk was literally a perfect representation of hulk IMO. I know the plot and the way they designed Hulk in this movie was a little off, but it’s way better than that goofy doofus Mark Ruffalo
_I love when he says "take it all" and thats becomes the key to kill that absorbing man_
One of the best movies in Marvel history.
Ha! Hulk turned grey for a second, anybody get the reference?
I Couldn't Tell Sadly. Sorry.
@@Erich.C cuz Hulk originally was supposed to be colored grey but there was an inking problem so they went with green instead.
@@deadcool3227 I Already Knew That!
@@Erich.C oh
Coz there's a Grey Hulk
This was such an underrated movie
I remember watching this as a kid. Didn’t really know what was going on but I was concerned with the Hulks well being.
I seriously didn’t know wtf I was looking at when I watched this movie as a kid.
bro me too lmao, it didnt help either that my crtv made it dark asf also haha
I like dogs
And hulk vs dogs fight
Yes
Me too
You are evil sir
We all do bud
The "Take it all" part was such an anime moment.
This movie may have a lot of flaws. But as far as being a REAL accurate representation of the Hulk it's 10/10. Hulk is more than just a strong dude with a cranky attitude. He also has different powers he utilizes when he gets angry. Marvel really screwed up the new Hulk.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you
