    I think it needs to be said again that no one without some sort of psych degree is qualified to diagnose a person "after the fact" without even interviewing the person in question.
    Even psychiatrists make mistakes sometimes when they make a diagnosis. Imagine how someone without any training might do.

    I wonder if the father's rejection of James and his book is somehow (consciously or not) causing James to write about the family in a negative light. He has already come to the conclusion Maura is alive, so he is working backwards from that, which is the antithesis of the Scientific method. I still like him though and plan on buying his book next week.
    My personal theory about the family apathy is you have a dysfunctional family in some way and maybe they simply don't care, maybe they didn't like her. I could be wrong. I try not to hold hard truths when it comes to this story and keep an open mind.

    I have noticed sometimes when people supposedly in the know make claims they occasionally have it exactly wrong. They do a quick pass over on Forcier but to me if he in fact said that he "saw a woman of Mauras description running down the road" If that is true can you imagine a woman running down the road carrying a backpack with alcohol beverages and likely somewhat Intoxicated after having ban auto accident!? Perhaps it's just me but to think Maura would be running down the road in such condition seems unlikely. If Forcier is therefore lieing that would raise serious red flags to me.

      definition: a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience.
      Dire circumstances can propel an otherwise good person to manifest these characteristics. You don't steal from Fort knox because you're mentally healthy. You steal from fort knox wen your inner monologue is screaming for help or screaming for a change in your life.
      Renner doesn't just make things up.

      @@unprocessed_life Yes he does at times. He no longer thinks that, either. You are misunderstanding the definition. There is no evidence that it was a major part of her personality. Sociopathy is a personality disorder, which is not a mental illness. People can do bad things without being either mentally ill or personality disordered. It happens every day. Renner was not qualified to make such a diagnosis. There's a true sociopath in the WH. It hardly compares to Maura's actions. Bill Rausch is more of a sociopath than Maura ever was.

    The most glaringly significant thing that I have learned from the two Renner interviews that you have done so far is to learn of the number of people connected to the Maura Murray case who refuse to have anything to do with James Renner.
    Renner, on the other hand, proves that he is in fact amazingly naive about the reason why he is being shunned, deciding that, if someone doesn't want to talk to him, then they must be hiding something, when in fact, it is Renner's abusive behavior that is at the root cause of doors being literally slammed in his face. Another wasted hour for Missing Maura Murray.

      I enjoy reading about, pondering and trying to solve a mystery as much as the next person does. But over the years, I've come to realize that even the most well-meaning, amateur online sleuths often end up doing far more harm than good. I understand that it is hard to know when the lines have been crossed. But I think that it is safe to say that when a family's private tragedy becomes a public pastime, is reduced to any kind of parlor game-type atmosphere, or worst of all, becomes just another gleeful lark, that this is a definite indication that things may have gone too far. I'm not accusing anyone at Missing Maura Murray of engaging in or promoting that kind of behavior (at least they haven't done anything like that as I type this). But I most certainly feel that they have given far too much of a voice to James Renner, one of the worst perpetrators of the kind of gross insensitivity that no family of a missing person or any other kind of victim should have to endure.

    I found your podcast really interesting in the beginning, but I can't handle comments like these. It is incredibly irresponsible of Mr. Renner to be diagnosing someone with a psychological issue, ESPECIALLY when that person in question is not a psychologist by profession. I find it very entertaining that James Renner is wanting to prosecute a guy and calling him a stalker when the guy shares a Facebook post that Renner himself posted. Earlier in the podcast Renner explained how he had tracked down a woman who clearly didn't want to speak to him and showed up at her door in the early evening and he thinks that is perfectly fine. Renner isn't there in any official capacity, he doesn't work for the police and hasn't been asked to help by anyone involved in the case. Fred Murray not wanting to talk to him is completely reasonable, Renner has inserted himself into this case as a way to self promote and profit from this girl's disappearance. I wouldn't talk to him either.

    Regardless of what people say about James Renner. and giving up on his research simply because he called Maura a "sociopath," he makes a lot of valid points. If we're being honest, Maura was a good person, but she had problems. Stealing, drinking, etc. She had a "wild" side. It's a tragedy that she went missing and the case is still unsolved, but if you're going to try to solve a case as this, you have to put your personal feelings aside and go where the facts take you. If that fact ends up painting a somewhat bad picture of Maura or her family, oh well, deal with it. You have to go down rabbit holes. And truthfully, James Renner makes a lot of fantastic points, especially with the weird activity by Fred and her family and friends. You can blame it on grief and people acting different in some form or another when a tragedy happens, but that doesn't mean you accept that "blame" and move on. Everything is important in a case like this. Even the smallest details.

    So one thing about the ATM withdrawals that makes no sense is that ATM's have a max withdrawal so they can bang people out on fees. You can run the card thru on the same ATM multiple times, usually at $3 a whack. The only thing that would limit your withdrawals would be a limit on the ATM card itself, which most people have. My card allows for max $800 ATM withdrawals per calendar day. Wouldn't matter how many ATM's I tried to use, the card wouldn't allow me to exceed $800 until the next day.
    I've had instances where I needed 4 or 500 bucks but the convenient store ATM only allowed $200 withdrawals. So I'd take out $200, complete the transaction and then re-swipe the card. I honestly have no clue why someone would go thru this hassle of using so many different ATM's.

    I love the podcast and looking forward to reading James Renners book. However, I think it's really not taking into consideration that the mother might not have had the emotional capacity to look for her daughter whether or not she had a physical capacity due to illness. I feel like that is a reach in regards to painting her as fully apathetic. It sounded like she didn't have an emotional capacity to be in charge of the house if Maura was running the household before she left. I hate when journalist try to start spinning how a family looks by picking on what is "normal". There is plenty evidence that her family was/is strange, but I so often see journalists picking on actions that are understandable to spin their story.

    WOW......I simply could not even go past like the first few comments when James Renner starts talking. It is truly sad to me how big his ego is...He really thinks someone with a different opinion or any sort of criticism towards him is a "troll" or people are "trolling" if they talk any negative way about him? He needs to get over himself first of all. You can just hear it in his voice every time he speaks pertaining to this case. Just in the first remarks he makes on this podcast. He just has this way about him that comes off as though he is the only one who has or is able to look into this case. I would think he probably started out like most of us trying to find answers and clues, but he is just way to obsessed. At least he admits it. I agree that this case can make you obsessed with all the theories and the unknowns and trying to find any missing pieces. But, when did he become feeling like he is entitled or the face and name for any answers to this case? With his book and now a documentary? I would imagine that he is well aware that Maura's family is hurt by things he has said (as they should be)and that if there was going to be a documentary about Maura, wouldn't you think that her family should be involved or approve of it? I remember first reading his blogs and interviews and thinking someone is really helping this case, then after years of it, I realized things were not only stated as fact. There was always this underlying opinion of his that has always been slid into everything he does. Sorry, I am just so frustrated that James Renner has this platform he has made, which would be great, if it was truly used only for finding the truth about Maura and not making money and fame on the case. And....that is just my opinion.

      +Cynthia Horn Thar's a good point. I'm open to the idea she might be alive, even though that's a long shot to me. But the idea that several people at that party knew about her plans to get away make this sound like a big conspiracy. How many people at the party knew she was going away? 2, 3, 4 Plus her immediate family? Those people might have told this getaway story to somebody else.
      Why wont any of them talk? How does Maura have such a big hold on the people at the party? Is she blackmailing them or something? The idea that nobody at the party talks about this(11 years later), makes it more likely that they dont talk because there's nothing to say. They did not know what she wanted to do. Or at most she told them she was going away for a week and that was it.
      I think she is dead unfortunately.

      All accounts I have come across have been very consistent in noting that this was actually a small get-together between friends. This "Party" took place in the dorm room of Sara Alfieri, Maura's work associate at an art gallery on campus. Maura brought along her friend Kate, who was friends with Maura through athletics and track. I sincerely doubt that Kate knew many people at that get-together that night (in other words I believe Kate was just tagging along) While Maura and Kate left at the same time (around 2-230) Sara, the host of the party, had passed out hours earlier. Both Kate and Sara have talked to the media in the days after Maura went missing, so I am a little confused as to why they are being portrayed as these sinister characters.

    Okay, so let me get this right, Renner is an investigative journalist but he didn't check this Vester Lee Flannagan account to see if it was a fake? There was activity on the account as recently as this week!

    • @JamesRenner
      @JamesRenner 9 лет назад +8

      +Bianca Armendy To clarify, it is possible that Vester Lee Flanagan's account was hacked and is now being used by someone else. Or, it could have been a troll wanting us to believe he was Flanagan. The jury is still out on that. Either way, it's disturbing. The interesting thing about blogs and podcasts is they are part of a developing and changing narrative. The book, though, is designed to stand the test of time.

    • @CurtRowlett
      @CurtRowlett 9 лет назад +8

      +Bianca Armendy Only James Renner actually calls James Renner an investigative journalist. A much larger number of people refer to him as a total hack and tabloid journalist, myself among them. Do even a small amount of research on Renner and you will quickly learn that he often verbally attacks and purposely seeks to defame people, particularly those who resist his uninvited attempts to interject himself into their lives. It is the meddling from independent hacks such as Renner who generally end up causing more damage to cases than actually helping.

I'm not saying that he's not dedicated to Maura's case or that he genuinely wants to find out what happened to her, but here... he seems like he's just trying to establish some promotion for his upcoming book and I really don't like that

    I do not think the family was involved at all. I feel very sorry for her father. He is grieving the loss of his daughter, along with having no closure to start healing.
    I think maura was involved with the hit and run and was tortured with the belief she may have killed a man. I think she either committed suicide or succumbed to the outside elements.

    I haven't read James' books yet- but I've 'read' he has ended up showing the negative aspects of victims and families' characters before. (Which btw- if these are facts- I understand. Any journalist writing well would not keep negative facts out if they are writing true crime.) But if true is it possible James' reputation could have influenced a fiercely private mans decision? Not wanting any dirty laundry aired about his daughter that 6 years later he had come to terms with never seeing her again? Just curious. That could explain his adamant attitude. As opposed to it being about he had something to hide.

      @hankmoody940 8 лет назад +1

      I haven't read anything he's done particularly because I understand that it's not always truth. I have a problem with that because he not only Slanders Maura Murray's name is Landers the family's name and a lot of it from my understanding as I mentioned is not fact. You don't know what fact is from there once someone is called out on something like that. And when I look at comments I see that tons of people have called him out numerous times over the years which I did not know that... Personally I would not waste my money reading anything of his or spend the money to provide him his income on this seemingly cash cow for him

    Is anyone who questions James Renner's approach, motives, or reporting a "troll"? He's truly very accomplished, and yet it seems he hasn't learned he'll attract more bees - as well as (credible) sources, (relevant) scoops, and (loyal) readers - with honey than vinegar. He calls the cops "above suspicion" but hurls abuse at Maura's loved ones. Odd battles to pick for a veteran journalist. And odd for a journalist to take a starring role in a story - i.e., the Maura Murray case vs. The James Renner Show.

    First off...great show...loving getting steeped in this fascinating case. My comment has nothing to do with the case, however, but to the image on screen, the silhouette of the person in the center...which I've been staring at for a while. You can see it as a person standing still and looking away, into the distance, or as someone running towards the "camera". Was this intentional?...because,if so, it really is a brilliant way to emphasize the confusion that arises when studying this case. I'm a graphic designer, so it just popped out at me...anywhooo...great job on the show, very level headed and rational, which is what this case needs if it is ever going to be solved.

    If this Conrad guy is serious about the police truly believing that she is buried under a house then why haven't there been steps taken to find out if the body is at least there? I understand that they can't just go tearing through house without reasonable evidence to show that she's buried there however they can bring ground-penetrating radar or whatever it is they have to at least do some sort of preliminary testing to see if it's possible. They even have ways of being able to pull out a small sample from soil and ground even under a house to see if it would contain certain deposits of whatever minerals or whatever the hell they look for to see if there is a body decomposing nearby in the ground.

      Speculation is that if it is RS that Conrad is referring to (in all fairness Conrad could just be getting back at LE after being fired) then RS has family connections to the state attorneys office and this could be being covered up. RS’s family has a concrete form company in proximity to the disappearance. It could also be referring to CM and the concrete pad poured at the aframe...or RF and the fact that construction of his house was going on during the disappearance. There are so many rabbit holes. I have done a lot of armchair detective research and get more confused every day. I give credit to all those that have vested serious time and effort into the case, it could really drive you insane.

  • @johnmcgrath3720

    I think Forcier needs a deeper look. If the ignored supermarket sighting is untrue, I'd put him as a good suspect based on opportunity and his actions afterwards (yes it is suspicious not to allow a search and suddenly remembering a running girl a month later, which conveniently provided an alibi).

    • @biancaarmendy1295
      @biancaarmendy1295 9 лет назад +2

      +John McGrath I agree very much with this. I think it is very suspicious that several months after Maura disappeared, he interjected himself into the case. This is quite a common action (or tactic) undertaken by offenders in homicide cases. If you do some reading or googling on the subject, you'll see it is a characteristic that is often noted by crime experts.

    Another great episode, guys! The family apathy continues to boggle my mind. Could be as simple as protecting her image, but if I had a kid that committed minor credit card fraud or whatever, people knowing about that wouldn't prevent me from doing all I could to find her. But I also wouldn't look too much into those songs lyrics. I don't think it necessarily means they knew she was running away to starting over a new life. If anything, I think her brother is just referencing her leaving school to deal with whatever issues she had instead of turning to family and friends.
    It kills me - many of the details, the $4,000 for example, could have such a simple explanation and we can move on already. If you guys could get a family member on, it would be a big break. Good luck!

    • @laurenwilliams2146
      @laurenwilliams2146 9 лет назад +1

      +kbmast1 Yes, I certainly get that. As someone very interested in this case, I appreciate James' efforts, but I also think the psychopath comments, for example, are a bit much. So I get why the family isn't crazy about him, but at the same time, like you said, there's just something missing about them. If these assumptions about Maura are so off base, why aren't they out there presenting the correct information and laying everything they know on the table? Again, if it were my kid, I would want the public to know everything - the truth - to help find her.

    I wonder if that girl seen in the carcrashsite was Maura? Earlier it was told the busdriver first said she wasn't Maura but later he changed his mind. I understood Kate also went missing for a day or two maybe it was Kate in the car and not Maura? Maybe Maura got killed durin that party and that's why none want to talk about the party. But then again why Fred Murray told he met Maura in the following morning unless he was present in that party too and somehow got involved in Maura's death..? But if Maura Murrey still is alive why would she be living either in USA or Canada when there are tens of other countries to live in? Lol! Much more safe for her to hide in Europe, Asia or Australia maybe,

    I have no idea why people are so ass-mad about this Renner guy. I am always unbelievably impressed by journalists and investigators that commit all this time and resources to doing this amount of leg work. I truly don't care if he is plugging his book or making inflammatory comments. The effort he put in to tracking down the college roommates and being able to explain how uncooperative they were seems significant.
    I'm not saying it is impossible but in most tragic murders, kidnappings and disappearances, it is unlikely that the close family and friends of the victim won't make some effort to inform the public. People practically bankrupt themselves trying to get media and public attention to help find a loved one. In this case, the closest people in Maura's orbit seem to be putting a suspicious amount of effort to avoid getting free media attention to help find Maura.
    Again, it's not impossible but showing a hostile refusal to cooperate with people who want to solve this case seems weird.
