    Thanks so much for this video! The clue about the grease was critical. You saved me $700, because the Chrysler dealer in NZ wanted to charge $600 for the cable set alone. I had my Mom ship the parts from the U.S. and got it replaced in 10 minutes. Thanks again!

    I would really like to thank you for this video. I am a grandmother of 2 and the local mechanics said I would have to take my car to a specialist in gearboxes this sounded like big dollars to me so yesterday the parts arrived in the mail from Bleam Queensland for $40 and I fitted them myself. I did both bushes just to be sure and my car is back on the road took about an hour. I didn't have grease so used paw paw ointment worked a treat. Thank you so much you saved me so much money.

    I am so glad that I came across this. Am purchasing an 06 PT on Friday and the owner was talking that on highway in cruise control it pops out of 5th gear. I knew it has something to do with the cable, but this being my first PT it was important to know what I was dealing with. Thank you so much. Also, thanks for sharing your PayPal in comments. You have saved me a lot of money.

    My daughter has an 08 pt and called me in a panic that her car no longer had reverse, so I looked on RUclips and found your video. I went and inspected her shifter but it didn’t have any extra play so I was nervous it wasn’t going to be that easy, but after inspecting the linkage under air box I noticed that the bushings were shot. They didn’t pop in as easily as the video, but like you said take your time and it went in. Thank you very much because for $22 and change I was able to get it going down the road again.

    I would sincerely like to thank you and applaud you for this video. I am hardly the most mechanically inclined when it comes to cars, but you made it very easy for me to find out why my car was not going in reverse and to repair it. It took me a whopping 30 minutes and $13 to do so. I am in your debt.

    Appreciate the video. Had to replace my bushings, I could not shift into reverse. Just a quick note. The auto parts store had to order my bushings leaving me needing a temporary fix. 3/8 fuel line is very close to the same inside and outside diameter, and will fit the bushings in the cab under the shifter as well. A few bucks for a six inches of hose, and you can cut about a dozen pieces to get you back on the road.

    Thank you for this video.
    My '01 has just gone in to my mechanic for losing 5th and reverse, with the gear stick being able to move widely side to side but able (with patience) to get into 1st/2nd/3rd.
    They've said it's the bushings but the side to side play made them suspect a snapped gear stick was also involved.
    My PT is a mid-way finished Drag Car so she's a bit special when she breaks unfortunately.
    I bought her like that.- tuned, auto MC in a manual conversion (the dealership was wth at that), evidence of tampering in the firewall - welds have been changed and the heater core hoses are swapped over with clips the mechanic has never seen before. "Frankencar".
    Videos like this help me to understand what breaks and how to fix it in her.
    Cheers.

    Thanks so much for this video! The auto shop wanted a fortune. But after showing this video to my father we were able to restore reverse on my pt cruiser. All other gears would shift fine but reverse felt "blocked". Luckily, after replacing BOTH bushing cables under the hood now reverse is back and working. All my other gears now feel "tighter" as well. It was a win win! Napa had the kit needed to replace both my bushing cables for $20! :) In the video it doesn't show the other bushing cable being replaced but it's right next to the one shown in the video. Also my father went to the hardware store and found these tiny little brackets to hold the bushing cables on. He said they costed $0.15! Good luck!!

      this sounds just like the probs we r still having after fixing the bushing that's in the vid. can u tell us exactly where that other bushing is? cuz I just showed ur comment 2 hubby and he said that while I was shifting, he saw something "move" in there, but didn't know what it was ... I didn't c another "end" of a cable .. did it drop down inside maybe? Is it RIGHT THERE beside the one we just fixed? Thx so much! :)

      Keep in mind that there are a total of 4 shifter cable bushings, two at the transmission and 2 at the shifter. I recommend looking under the hood with the air box removed while someone is moving the shifter and see if there is any slack or something not moving correctly such as another bad bushing. You may even need to check inside at the shifter with the console removed to see if any issues there as wel

    Thanks for the great video! In your situation, there was no side-to-side play in the shifter. If there is side-to-side play in the shifter, does that tell me that it’s the bushing underneath the shifter in the center console that needs to be replaced, rather than the one up by the transmission? Thanks in advance.

I kept moving it for a while and ended up getting reverse, then had same nothingness when wanting to go forward. I got to where I needed to go but again feels connected to nothing and seems to be stuck in 3rd gear. Do you think it sound ms like this video will be the fix? The video does not say anything about an E clip but I suspect that there is supposed to be an e-clip on the pin??? This car is my son's car and he bought it used and someone cobbed it together with a hex nut and zip tie....no e-clip is on the pin.

    Hi, I have a question about my 2005 PT Cruiser. My issue is the opposite and it's really difficult to put it into gear. I was trying to shift into to gear and the gear shift actually broke and I was stuck in reverse. I checked the trans fluids and it's fine. I'm going to check the bushing next. Any ideas what this could mean? I'm trying to save money and fix it myself. I already replaced the gear shift and it's still tight.

    Thanks..

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  10 лет назад

      Hello gary. If the lever on the trans is moving with the cable when the shifter inside is moved....you have a mechanical problem. Especially if it won't move in neutral.....that means internal failure of the trans components. A electrical failure would allow operation of second gear (limp in) as well as reverse.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 лет назад

      +Ada Hall I recommend trying to isolate the issue by having the emergency brake on.....key off.....go under the hood and access the shifter cable where it attaches to the trans. Make sure its attached and okay. If okay then remove the cable end from the transmission and then try moving the transmission arm that the cable was attached to to see if it will move. This way we can rule out the trans as being the issue. While disconnected you can also try moving the shifter from inside with the key on and engine not running. Try this and let me know what you find.

    I have a 2006 Hyundai Elantra Manual transmission , 3rd and 4th speed won't go into gear , I started to dismount the transmission to replace it for another one but when I got to the point of the shifter I noticed that the shifter cable bushing was cracked from one side in the middle , do you think this is the reason why it won't go into gear on the 3rd and 4th?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 лет назад

      +Dario stud The shifter bushing will need to be pretty much worn out or pieces missing in my opinion. It just depends on the shifter......gently move the shifter side to side and front to back to see if any play. If any play is found then it could be a bushing issue inside at the shifter or at the trans. If no play then the issue in trans related

    • @dariostud9424
      @dariostud9424 8 лет назад

      I honestly didn't think of trying to see if there was any play in the bushing because the whole time I was aiming to dismount the whole transmission box , but when I got to the bushing part , pulled it and noticed that the bushing is broken from one side of the center then I thought that that may be the reason why 3rd and 4th don't go into gear , I already ordered the replacement kit but thought I'd ask here to see if anybody had any clue as to if that could be the reason why , thanks.

      Some kits come with a tool , otherwise you can try a socket thats close in size that will allow you to push on the bushing. Adding some lube wouldnt hurt either. Thanks for watching and for asking. Make sure to subscribe.

I push at shop in N MOVE now but no go in D or r 1,2 . Is any shot it could be something else besides transmitting . ...I'm thinking like I see in other comment bad trans because when I try move In N at first it not move. Toe man may be push harder . Could it sieze and break back loose. I not check shift conditions thing yet but no play .

    Don't have this particular problem but I love to learn. If I ever do, I'll fix it myself! I was looking for help with a transmission gear select module and how to replace it. PT Cruiser 2007 won't come out out of 2nd gear. Also Airbag light and engine light came on and won't go off. All this happened at the exact same time.? Could they be related? Have to be if it all happened at the same time, right?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 лет назад

      First thing we need to do is check for codes. That includes checking all the modules to see what codes were set. Once you know the codes I will be able to help you further. Otherwise we would be just guessing,.

    • @maritanickels8281
      @maritanickels8281 8 лет назад

      Don't know what codes came up when he plugged his little machine in, but he said when it was in park, it registered as neutral, and there was at least one other gear that didn't match what the machine said. I went to Autozone, he said it is called a shift modulator and has to be bought from a dealer. Mechanic also told me how to fix it. He said remove the battery, remove the shelf that the battery sits on, and it would be right there. Sounds easy enough? Does that jive with anything in your head?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 лет назад

      I know for sure that we have nothing called a shift modulator for that vehicle. The vehicle has a 41te trans. There is a solenoid pack externally mounted and the trans range sensor that tells what gear it is in which requires removal of the valve body to get to it. It sounds like they are describing something different then the first issue you mentioned about the gear positions. Knowing the exact code is important. The solenoid pack has nothing to do with the trans shifter position. I did a video on the solenoid pack but on another vehicle. Accessing it is different but the part and part replacement is the same. Also the local parts stores sale the solenoid pack so the dealer only speech they gave you is confusing unless both individuals are speaking of completely different items. What I recommend is visiting your local parts store again and getting them to pull the codes and have them right them down so that you can let me know so that I can help you further.

      If the shifter position doesnt match the indicator then most likely you have a bad cable bushing either inside at the shifter or outside at the transnmission

      Make sure that the cable is moving correctly and no bushing failures in the ends of the cable. If okay then check the fluid level....if okay then you have internal trans issues and it will require removal and tear down to see what is needed. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe

      hey, just had this problem come up after repairing the cable bushing issue. 2001 PT with 5 speed manual, 109,000 miles. Well maintained. Now I get nothing in any gear, car will not move. Makes a slight grinding noice when I let off the clutch. What could I have done wrong?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 лет назад

      +Ken Kunze Ken.....make sure there is no slop in the shifter. there should be no excessive side to side or forward and backward movement. You may also need to check the bushings on the other end of the shifter cable that are under the console at the shifter itself

    +MotorCity Mechanic IT'S FIXED!!!! IT'S FIXED!!! oh my gosh we r SO appreciative! Thx SO MUCH 4 taking the time and pains 2 work w/us. I'm giving u cyber hugs .. (hubby sends handshake! lol) we had a bear of a time getting that console out, so what we finally had 2 do was pull it OUT on either side where the cups go, which flattened out that lighter part just enuf so that we cld pull it up from the back ... once we got it off, we saw that the bushings from the rod that connects directly w/the shifter was shot as well...there wasn't a bushing 4 that in the pack that we got from the store, but the one with the "arm" on it was the right size and shape, so we popped that out of that one (cuz that one was still good on our car), and used that one. VOILA! It shifts better now than it did when we bought it ... we don't have trouble w/getting it into 2nd gear anymore nor is reverse fighting us ... it works BEAUTIFULLY and u saved us $700!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! :D I've already told everyone I know about ur site and how nice u were 2 us and how patient u were w/walking us thru all the difficulties we encountered. U shld b getting some more subscribers very soon. Again, i cannot tell u how much ur helps meant 2 us .. we really didn't have that much money 2 get it fixed and after spending just $21 on parts, (and a lot of rookie frustration lol) the car is great! Thank u for ur channel and ur knowledge and ur help. U're doing a very selfless thing here, and U have two very happy fans! :D

    ok....we have a 2003 pt cruise touring that the shifter can move all over the place but wont go INTO a gear .. I called around and then called a dealership 2 c what they wld say .. they said that I can't get the bushings by themselves I wld have to have the entire cable .... is this true or r they just trying 2 get more $$ out of me? A fast answer wld b appreciated! :)

      you can get the bushings separate, not from the dealer but from the local parts stores or even on ebay. the dealer will sale you what they can get which is just the cable. the aftermarket market has a repair bushing to fix the issues.

      Butterfly1Queen keep me informed, theres a good chance that is the problem and your cable may have even come completely off causing no gears. also if you like....the part number for the one I used was in the video as well.

      Make sure you don't still have play. There are bushings under the hood as you know and have replaced......there are also bushings at the shifter inside. Once all the play is gone......and still having issues then the issue may be internal to the trans. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 лет назад

      Jeff Heffler I hope the latch isn't jammed...That's the worse case scenario because you cant get the door panel off with out opening the door. There are different rods that operate the handles inside and outside. The symptoms sound like a latch issue none the less. I haven't come across that issue as of yet on that vehicle.
