I highly recommend angling the bottom of your seat until your thigh can rest on the seat comfortably. If you run long times, you may develop some issues as you're basically holding the weight of your legs on your feet, hips, and lower back.
TBH I am pretty disappointed with how little effort they put into setting a comfortable ergonomic racing position from the start since they were setting all these metrics from scratch... what a missed opportunity to make it perfect right away. This racing position looks very yikes.
@@pokerboyfakerish3266 yeah top of the wheel should be roughly at shoulder height (it's past his chin now :S) and when you extend your arms your wrists should rest on top of the wheel (so when you grab it there's a slight bend in your arms) my DIY rig doesn't look nearly as fancy as this one since it's just a simple frame I made out of 2x4's but proper seating position was like the first (and pretty much only XD) thing I did some research into....
Hey guys, thanks for making this video. I was looking for a non-ugly simulator rig for a long time before I found this. Strongly based on this design I made a very similar rig as my first furniture type woodworking experiment. Very very difficult and time consuming but I love the final product. For those wondering (because I was), I used 8 layers of 15mm baltic birch as the main body and it handles 9nm direct drive wheelbase with basically zero flex. Thanks again 4eyes!
What I love about this is the "thinking out loud" approach to the decision making. Really took us along for the ride. (no pun intended). Wouldn't it be cool if you had side mirrors but they were tweeters instead?
I really enjoy the format of this video compared to your usual ones. It gives me the sense of being involved in the process compared to just watching a video.
I love this new approach you guys have taken, you guys are hilarious and it’s awesome to see so much more of the fun you have with the creative process!
all I see here is how 2 jerks messed up a bunch of material. Trees were killed for the joy of downs and autists from the Internet! want same? are you ok?! aaa, one more autist here...
I love this build, couldn't have imagined a more aesthetically pleasing sim-rig myself. my only fear with this design would be the stability of the structure, if you decide to one day dive down the rabbit-hole and upgrade to say a 10-20nm steering wheel, compared to the 2-2.5nm in most entry-level wheels
When I first saw the thumbnail, I was picturing the huge 80's arcade driving cabinets that you would climb inside to sit in. Your "spine" design makes for a much more compact to solution and really looks slick. Looking forward to seeing how this develops. Thanks for sharing!
For a casual racing rig ... I think this was a great piece.... Well done Mine is more about function and it's 2x4's ... my first one was PVC and plywood
I'm a woodworker/sim racer and am in the process of re-building my sim. I have an IKEA Paong chair and using my old stand. Getting some great ideas! Thanks for sharing!
"Even with a free lumber supply...I still don't want to be wasteful" is (in my opinion) a very good attitude. Just imagine how long the tree took to grow that wood, one should really honor that.
I built my own cockpit out of lumber also, I used an old actual racing seat, works great! One thing that I did that you may want to do: Remove the pedals from the plastic box that they are housed in and mount the pedals upside down on some plywood (so the pedals are configured like in a car). Fasten the plywood to your racing cockpit at an appropriate spot. I made my upside down pedals container adjustable for shorter or longer legs so when kids use it they can reach the pedals. Great project, enjoy! edit: I am intrigued with your spline design and will work on something like that myself, the only thing that I don't like about it is the distance that the driver sits from the display (wall). This could be resolved by building a monitor/tv support stand closer to the driver.
I really enjoyed this video concept. Taking us along for the ride was enjoyable and I've subbed for more of this. I'd change the layout of the rig a little to make it more comfortable by inverting the pedals, raising the seat and also making the angle of the wheel adjustable.
Was fantastic how you filmed the segment talking about all the things people were going to make fun of you for while standing with the piece in the most phallic way possible.
LOVING this build! Ultra Short Throw Projector would be perfect for front mounting the projector. I do buildouts for clients with these for more "budget" focused/size constrained home theaters and would be perfect for this application if latency isn't too huge of a focus. I put budget in parenthesis because, they're not cheap by any means, but in comparison to $49k professional grade projectors, they're a steal. Projectors in general wouldn't be great for competitive games like shooters, but for a "let's have fun" application like a racing sim, it's great.
I’ve been watching your content for about a year now, and this is one of my favorite version of you guys. Great content structure and a break from your usual beautiful storytelling.
Awesome, love the design and the process. The only downside is that rigs usually have adjustability (That steering wheel is angle/height looks uncomfortable). Maybe your shorter/taller friends want to play, or maybe you want to try out different steering wheel angles or seat distances to see what feels good. Just like in a real car. Otherwise looks very nice
I started watching you 5 years ago. For some reason RUclips stopped recommending your vids about 4 years ago. I haven't seen any of your vids since then but holy moly. You have a warehouse and a team now?! Congrats dude. So happy for your success!
The projector needs to go on a rear down force wing. It can be like a shelf to hold components… maybe multi level. It would complement the look. Looks great. Thanks.
My man.... I love this design. One thing you didn't think of: The Epson ultra-short-throw projector. Ultra short means RIDICULOUSLY short. You could set it in front of the rig, on the floor, a few inches from the wall, and it will project a 100+ " screen. The only downside is cost. Those lenses get very pricey, very quick.
This is one nice rig. It's simple, sturdy, and doesn't really take up too much width wise. Great design guys. The only thing I could see that needs modifying is size for those with a small room, but they can still have good size video screen sit on it.
beautiful cockpit. but can I give you one idea? You need to move the pedals or the seat along with the steering wheel to suit different heights of people. Place the steering wheel on the rail on the bottom side of the base and move the base for the steering wheel along it (the base for the steering wheel is in the shape of the letter O)
Besides the steering wheel being “too damn high” and the seat too close for comfort, looks great. Possibly a redesigned 2.0 later on? Get on a car and take measurements guys 😉 👌🏻
That came out awesome. The lines look great. Very classy and looks fast just sitting there. This is the most excited I’ve been about building something in a long time. I already started collecting some of the stuff for my project.
"Le mans, where they have the straight and they put in the..." "Cones or whatever" That would be a fun task for a marshall to but the cones back up every 20s for 24h
Great build, although it may suffer from "form over function". For instance, there's several poor choices made as far as seating position is concerned ; with the screen position also being somewhat awkward (you have to look upward to see it properly); the seat should be on an angle, not flat; and as others have mentioned, the steering wheel is too close. It sure looks spiffy though, I am just not convinced it is particularly practical. 🤔
Yeah, you need to be able to rest your legs on the seat the whole way down the back of the thigh. With this, he's holding his legs up with his feet and hips and overtime, it can become an issue. I developed some sciatic nerve issues with a poor sim seat position. Not sure how long he'll be running at a time, but it adds up.
@@biwan428 Yep. I don't think the rig will be used much. Maybe more of a 'display' and/or 'conversation piece' than a functional product. They should have researched 'proper seating position', and not relied on their own interpretations....
The seat should go up a bit and slightly angled backwards. The pedals should be closer and the projection should be lower. I would mount the projector upside down so it beams down instead of up. This way you can keep the projector horizontal and still have it project low enough to have the projected dashboard level with the real steering wheel .
I love that it looks like a highend piece of furniture! Beautiful work. One design I think would be stellar would be something along those lines that would also hide the gaming gear and morph into an table or something when not being used as a sim controller.
Wow, this is exactly what I needed. I just bought a screen and was about to start making one in few days. And voila! This video drops. Perfect timing! Thanks a lot!
The USAF is working on the B-21 Raider and of course you mentioned the B-2, but I can't wait until they start production on the "B-Arthur". This is a very cool build and I can't express, in words, how envious I am of the final product and set up!
An ultra short throw PJ mounted to the front of the rig would be perfect! A little tweaking on the slope of the seat bottom would make it much more comfortable for longer races.
I love this design! I might actually steal some Inspiration from this for my own sim racing build. My only real criticisms of this design would be that the steering wheel seems like it's too close to the driver. At the very least, it would be nice to have some adjustability in the steering wheel and seat. Maybe tilt the seat back a touch to allow the thighs to comfortably rest on the seat rather than hovering in the air. Oh, and you'll definitely want the shifter. And maybe an e-brake handle, too. Trust me on that one
I love basically all of your videos, but I especially love this new format where you both are working together through the design process. It adds a whole new element to the video that we don't typically see from your channel, or any others that I'm aware of. Cheers!
Guys, I love your videos. I only have one criticism, which I have long ago decided not to voice. But when you started talking about what the comments were going to pick up on, and you thought it was saying “like” too much, I had to write this. 😄 Your upspeak/hrt/rising inflection, is driving me up the proverbial! Tilt back the seat, and get the pedalboks higher. And on rails to make it Come towards the seat, for some adjustability, like in actual race/sportscars. Same slidings for steeringwheel. Use the c shape from buggati chiron
Great looking design! I assumed on your channels several months ago and love the videos and style. I've heard you guys talk a little about cars (caught a glimpse of the S2k in one video!) and F1 before, which is right in my wheelhouse. Now, somehow, we also share sim racing as a hobby! Truly awesome to see your work, great job. I built myself a simple rig to get started and currently working on an overly complex Formula style rig. It's going slow (only so much time, amiright?).. Been a little over a year, but I'm on the closing stages. Not sure I can finish by November but sounds like a great challenge! Love the channel, keep up the great content and general banter. Hopefully the sim racing big will really get you and you'll jump on iRacing! Yeah, a little snobby about realism but it's so much fun to have it all on the line, (virtual) wheel to wheel, racing open wheelers (I mostly run Formula Renault 3.5 these days) on the most amazing Formula tracks in the world. Makes you appreciate F1 even more.
I would love to get into something like that....but between working 70+ hours a week, and having a family. I don't think I can do it. Maybe in 10 more years :)
man that resonated when you were talking about not wanting to waste wood. i'm right there with you. Like you said, even if it were free, i would still have a hard time throwing away good scraps and offcuts.
Also, FOV is something that you fine tune in most sims, and it's something that changes with screen size and distance from the screen. It's worth looking into, plenty of guides out there. Inverting the pedals is also a very popular "mod". Just depends how deep you want to dive into sim racing.
@@Foureyes.Furniture - Yeah my apologies to Shaun should have made it sound more like “hey you’re on the right track, here’s some additional info”. Something like that. Love the work gents!
Would love to see an update on this with Gran turismo 7 and VR! It's mind blowing how immersive racing games can be, would love to see and hear your take on it. This is also SUCH a rad design
Just an idea, If you left a void in between the glulam where the cabling is located then when assembling you can use a pull thru avoiding too many exposed wires.
If you like sim racing, try it in VR, I have a very similar setup + a meta quest 2 and the immersion is ABSURD!! I find myself flinching before I crash my car every time xD
seeing the thumbnail my first idea, apart from the shape looking aesthetic, is that how flexible will be that steering wheel support, because that's basically a long lever and force feedback will try it's best to make it sway sideways , maybe can simply be triangulated with reinforcement going each sides of the pedals ?
while nimitz is a class of US-Carriers, it's also a ship, as most classes of ships are named after the first one, the class leader. Also - US Navy vessels start wit USS (or if not yet in service PCU), not SS, the army, Airforce and Coastguards use other prefixes. Civil ships named with SS would most likely be steam or sailing ships, but as they don't specifically need prefixes to my knowlegde, they can also go without any prefix.
This looks pretty good, but I think you could have made it with less wood. I would have just made two of those big pieces on each side with supports on the side and then connect those two with planks for the wheel and the pedals. It would look a bit more bare bone, but it would still work pretty good with less wood.
I really like the spine design. you could have saved on materials by doing it hollow with maybe some foam infill... you should definitely go for the shifter too
I am "from the sim community". No making fun of you guys. I am here because I don't want a metal erector set in my studio. Great job! I love it and is so much cooler than a off the shelf setup.
Love the build! I'd love to see you build a arcade but with no wraps like most. But would love to see different types of wood to create a character that most wrap their arcade in.
Very cool - I love the ikea vibe to it; not an eyesore like commercial ones, however 2 letters. V R...... screens got nothing on vr for racing sim engagement. Looks like you could reduce quite a bit of mass though. On the design front, you can download 50th percentile human 3d models and standard seated position data (e.g. for aircraft design), and looks like the angles are a bit odd - seat looks low relative to the pedals, and wheel looks both high and close? (unless the target was a formula ford or something). I'm scratch building a 1/12 scale functional, high fidelity R/C 3d printed tank, but too much work to document for your challenge lol. I'm about 90% done and the printer is running in the background for the first test print of the superstructure.
Is a woodworking hobbyist AND simracer I think you did a great job considering you went into this pretty blind. Brownie points for thinking about adjustability! Lots of people don't.
I loved all of the Chris output; 4 Eyes was produced in a cool style. TBH though, I actually enjoy the more raw look at processes, moments, and people. You addressed the switch a few weeks ago and I'm on board! I hope others are too,
Nice build. The stick shift is fun to drive with it gives a realism to the game but it makes you slower. And with all sports there are opinions. Just have fun then you enjoy it the most.
Fun to watch this as an experiment. Me I would go more for function rather than form. The monitor or monitors for best field of view should always be as close to the wheel as possible if the perspective is going to be imersive and correct unless you go for maybe VR, then I would build a compact rig.
I like the the midframe-design and would use it as inspiration for my own approach. But there are also many points for improvements. There is the cable management, adjustable seat or adjustable steering wheel.

I watch your channel regularly but just found this video. Wanted to say thank you for including so much from the design process and conversations around it :)
“Real” sim racer here, also lifetime carpenter/ woodworker… my diy sim rig was just thrown together with Baltic birch scraps, in one day… complete with triple monitor mounts… it’s ugly, but it works and I didn’t want to waste more time than 1 day building it..
It's really cool watching an experienced craftsman make something for my favourite hobby. It might not be what a sim racer would make, but personally I think you made something really cool. I made my first set up out of plastic plumbing pipes which I spray painted black. Gave the whole thing a roll cage look wgich was great for the purpose.
A curved screen would be a perfect addition. I think using a macro lens it might be possible to adjust the curve and also increase the projection ratio.
DUUUUUUUUUUDE, super cool build. i love the rockler challenge idea im gonna submit something for sure. This will be my first time doing a challenge so this should be exciting.
I can't wait to build a sim rig in the future. Once I'm out of college and can actually afford the wheel. When I build mine I'm gonna set it up with surround sound build onto the rig
Have a look at FOV calculators. Sim racing is great but if the FOV is off you will feel like you're driving from the back seat vs on the hood. If you use the math for the particular game - your immersion will increase substantially. It's basically size of screen vs distance from the screen.
Awesome project. Awesome video. Really digging the casual assembly breakdown (and the chat about planes and ships) with the cuts to video of working on those portions plays. I think this made me actually watch more than my usual background "listen and rewind a bit as needed" approach.
Start of video: "hmm, maybe the reason nobody builds sim racing setups with no lateral support for that huge motor in the wheel is that even though it looks cool (YT thumbnail yo!), the steering wheel will have unavoidable wobble" End of video: "yep"
I highly recommend angling the bottom of your seat until your thigh can rest on the seat comfortably. If you run long times, you may develop some issues as you're basically holding the weight of your legs on your feet, hips, and lower back.
I would say just raising the seat would do good here because that steering wheel is crazy high and in his face

I'm always trying to incorporate my car and woodworking hobbies... thanks for the idea! Looks amazing.
Do it...perfect timing with the challenge
man that resonated when you were talking about not wanting to waste wood. i'm right there with you. Like you said, even if it were free, i would still have a hard time throwing away good scraps and offcuts.
It's true. I don't think I'll ever get over it.
Also, FOV is something that you fine tune in most sims, and it's something that changes with screen size and distance from the screen. It's worth looking into, plenty of guides out there.
Inverting the pedals is also a very popular "mod". Just depends how deep you want to dive into sim racing.
I love making things with wood and i love driving cars. THIS IS THE BEST VID.
Not just a class of ship but also the name of the first of it’s kind. I served 4yrs on the USS Nimitz CVN-68. Named after Chester W. Nimitz (Admiral )
Chesty!
Shaun got paranoid after saying that, that he was going to get called out. Cause he was kind of just guessing
I love the new ‘behind the scenes’ video format
One way to implement a complete racetrack is to flip monza around and make it the sides of your seat. It basically looks like a seat already
What I would like to see - in terms of hobby builds is wood headphone stands. Hifi and audiophile audit rigs, carpentered by wood on course
This Channel just keeps getting better
seeing the thumbnail my first idea, apart from the shape looking aesthetic, is that how flexible will be that steering wheel support, because that's basically a long lever and force feedback will try it's best to make it sway sideways , maybe can simply be triangulated with reinforcement going each sides of the pedals ?
while nimitz is a class of US-Carriers, it's also a ship, as most classes of ships are named after the first one, the class leader.
Very cool design! I love that you used sections of tracks to make the profile. Such an awesome idea.
all I see here is how 2 jerks messed up a bunch of material. Trees were killed for the joy of downs and autists from the Internet!
I really like the spine design. you could have saved on materials by doing it hollow with maybe some foam infill... you should definitely go for the shifter too
Great job you guys but please start mas-producing these:)
As an architect, I love the process and the walking illustration. Great work
Is a woodworking hobbyist AND simracer I think you did a great job considering you went into this pretty blind.
I think I can see the two things you would change in a second iteration of the design.
Both having to do with seat- and steering wheel angle : )
gran tourismo 2 is where i learnt an appreciation for that downhill turn at laguna seca, absolutely brilliant and the most memorable track for me
Definitely one of the classics. I'm not sure that I can pick a favorite. But I will say I remember racing friends on Midfield (Fictional track) A LOT!
Fun to watch this as an experiment. Me I would go more for function rather than form. The monitor or monitors for best field of view should always be as close to the wheel as possible if the perspective is going to be imersive and correct unless you go for maybe VR, then I would build a compact rig.
Ahh love the design! I made a racing sim out of plywood during lockdown and I absolutely love it! Best thing I ever made lol
Ps... Can I enter my racing sim for the Rockler challenge? I don't live in the US though
You can definitely enter. Not sure if you're eligible to win.
@@Foureyes.Furniture I'll just put the hashtag on it then so others can check it out too 😜
I like the the midframe-design and would use it as inspiration for my own approach.
Love the grandma sitting position.
Not going to lie that is one slick rig.
DUUUUUUUUUUDE, super cool build. i love the rockler challenge idea im gonna submit something for sure. This will be my first time doing a challenge so this should be exciting.
Having raced motorcycles at Laguna Seca and Willow Springs this is such an awesome set up and looks like so much fun!!!
It really is!
I also love racing games, but this is my first time hearing of Gran Tureesmo, can't wait to check it out
I can't wait to build a sim rig in the future.
Him sweating this rather simple design gave me a pretty good chuckle.
Actually B-Arthur is a Marine....Gorgeous build!
Love the quality and style of your illustrations!
23:05 bold of you to assume we think they're yours. i think you where present tho so kudos for that
Awesome project. Awesome video.
Really digging the casual assembly breakdown (and the chat about planes and ships) with the cuts to video of working on those portions plays. I think this made me actually watch more than my usual background "listen and rewind a bit as needed" approach.
Start of video: "hmm, maybe the reason nobody builds sim racing setups with no lateral support for that huge motor in the wheel is that even though it looks cool (YT thumbnail yo!), the steering wheel will have unavoidable wobble"
End of video: "yep"
Now make the smaller folding version! This is beautiful but too big for us and I would LOVE to see what you come up with for a smaller version.
I’ve literally been researching doing this the last two weeks!
Good timing :)
Nimitz is both a class and a singular carrier.
The first boat of any class is what the class is named after.
Shaun was pretty "dead on" for not being a boat guy
