Building A Budget Drift Racing Simulator (Wood)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2025
- Using mainly wood 2x4 and about $40 of materials, I assemble a VERY cheap and sturdy DIY cockpit for simulator drifting and racing! Of course, you may need to buy or borrow a circular saw and a seat for your rig so it may cost a little more depending on what you have available. I had a spare Sparco Sprint bucket seat and Street Faction adjustable seat rail I picked up for my 240SX drift car, but for now they're going on the sim drift rig!

Just a heads up to anyone getting into VR.
If you get motion sick in VR, immediately stop playing! Do not push through the feeling, it will only get worse and will not benefit you at all. When you feel ok again, play in VR again. Keep repeating this process. It took me a week but I have terrible motion sickness. I went from feeling sick within 50 seconds, next day 2 minutes, then 5 minutes etc. Eventually you're brain will come to terms with this new concept, and eventually then you can play VR as long as you like! I learnt that method from some circus acrobats, and it really worked! Hope that helps someone.
Chris Chronos Hell yeah thank you for sharing your insight👌🏻 I wish I’d seen it back when I was trying to adapt to VR, it went poorly lol 🤢
4:38 So slick. So much style Haha 😎
LukesWorldTV thanks! I thought it was a pretty clever way to make the holes without printing some sort of template👌🏻
Dude quality is exceptional!!
Modified Metal awesome, I appreciate it! I ended up cutting twice cause I measured once a few times, but it came together nicely in the end!😅
why do you have only 725 subs? the quality of your videos deserve at least 100.000. just keep up and you will be there in the future!
ps. the s13 in the back is just fire!
MixaL1s6804 comments like this mean so much, I really appreciate it! I’ll definitely keep making videos, if you want to help me get to 100K faster share my channel with your car friends!🙏😁
cool racing rig bro I can't wait till I build one to
Hello bunta
We all helped fix that. Thanks for pointing it out.
Jheez that 240sx is nasty btw you deserve like 100000 subs at least!
Nighf thank you so much! I’m working on it ;)
You can see my S13 in action in my irl drift playlist but this is a good one🤘🏻
ruclips.net/video/bQJ5iMuFKns/видео.html
Did my sim about a year ago from scrap wood, very easy to build and adjust while using, so very good idea :)
rat013 yeah! There are nicer looking cockpits out there, but I could build 15 of these for the price of one of them😅
Brilliant video, man. Used your layout as a starting point when i removed the center post from my Playseat Revolution. Thanks!
Thank you! Sorry for the slow reply BTW, sometimes it feels like RUclips loses my comments -_-;
Great rig build!
Suggestion: Consider adding another piece of wood to the backboard that the pedals rest on. This will give your pedals the correct angle. Your Fanatec pedals are designed to be used in a desktop position with your chair positioned at 19 inches high. Your sim rig seat is much lower so the angle of the pedals is incorrect. If you ever get leg cramps then this is the reason why. :)
Robert Hopkins that’s a great tip, thank you!🙌🏻
I just tried to eyeball it based on the pedal position of my 240SX but I’m sure I didn’t do a good job haha😅
Well, after spending a chunk on other equipment, I might have to bring out the old high school wood shop skills again. Thanks for showing us this.
DmanDice that’s what I did! Have nice stuff because you save where you can 👌🏻
Kame Trick
I ordered
Thrustmaster T300RS wheel
TH8A shifter
3TPA Pro Pedal
Some basic hand brake
Its “budget stuff” but that’s relative lol. Especially since I’m new to Race sims. Well guess I’m in for the long haul now.
At least the Valve Index I can use for other stuff.
DmanDice an Index was my plan but I got deadly motion sickness and couldn’t get over it after several months of trying. 2 minutes of driving = 50-60 minutes of feeling too ill to do anything IRL... 😑
But yeah it looks like a sweet piece of gear! And you got the most affordable of what I’d say is “good realistic” drift gear so well done!🙌🏻
Kame Trick
Thanks. And sorry about the motion sickness. I read keeping a high frame rate helps too. 60 or even 90+. But you’d need a decent pc to keep that up. But with your equipment I’d be good with a monitor. Lol
Awesome! We might have to build a sim rig soon too!
THE SHAKE AND BAKE you should! If the group all puts in a little bit you could make it a shop rig and not be out much per person to have a nice rig! :)
Nice setup, reminds me of my first one I built years ago.. I have moved up to 3DOF of motion now.
VRSim Garage sounds neat, I’d like to try a motion rig at some point, but haven’t met anyone that’s got one where I’ll be passing through 😅
Kame Trick where are you located? I’m just out side Boston if you are ever in the area ...
VRSim Garage I’m in OK and get to TX, KY, FL and sometimes NC most years. I’ll keep that in mind though, I’d love to try out a rig like that and see how it enhances the experience
Really loving the quality of your videos with that new camera you got! Like WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!
Austi JB yeah it really shows, huh?! I think using the gopros for a couple years has helped me learn to work with what I’ve got, but now I can frame up shots a lot better and use camera focus to make my videos more interesting :) #procameraskillz 👌🏻
@@KameTrick Yea it really does dude!
🏎️ 🏁 Appreciate your tips and tricks with this build. 🏆Cheers from Western Australia 🇦🇺🤝🏻

LegionarCRO heck yeah, when you get it wrapped tag me on social, I want to see how it turns out!🍻 Also, Happy New Year!
this thing is absolutely gorgeous
Thank you, I think it turned out pretty well 👍🏻
I have been constructing my own sim rig out of wood at home and got stuck with my wheel supports. Modeling mine after yours even today, so thank you!!
The wheel uprights can be a bit tricky but a basic table shape ends up being pretty stable! Hope I could help, good luck 🍀
@@KameTrick Your design has proved to be everything I needed and more. My rig has been super sturdy and ergonomically. Thanks for the help and happy sim racing!
Awesome build, thanks for the measurements gonna build one for myself!!!
Daniel Stead right on! If you post the completed build on social anywhere @ me, I enjoy seeing what the community builds 👌🏻

UPDATE! I've been getting a ton of requests for the dimensions and measurements of my rig, so I made an updated video with that info and a proper walkthrough!
ruclips.net/video/oVP_59q_DvI/видео.html
Ya i think ill build it so that the pedels are slightly lower than the seat but the seat higher so i can play shooters comfortably and put it on wheels to slide underneath it or put on rails to slide it forward for racing and have keybord mouse under it to slide out that way i can pull seat out a tad bit so my feet not on the pedels and ill need a fake wall to put infront of pedels to keep 2 yr old from playing with it lol then out a shifter and ebreak on a removable stand that can mount onto the seat but not sure how to execute it as far as parts and the wood design
esmokebaby there are certainly a lot of options! I’m fortunate that mine is in my office, so I can just keep the room closed off when my little one is old enough to start exploring the house😅
How much Time to build that ?
Lois Millet for me, it took probably 5-6 hours total, across 3 afternoons (I was building it a couple hours at a time after work) The biggest time sink was in waiting for the paint to cure-if you have a roommate who can’t stand the odor of freshly painted stuff you’ll have more delays😅
Kame Trick ok thanks i will build mine this afternoon
Nice!
Thanks!
That’s what she said 😂 dude you got me!
Haha always sliding in the dad jokes and puns 🚗 💨
Love your vids man
BTW I like your 240sx
Thanks!
I'm making one, I'm in the process like you in 5:54 and I don't know how to measure the wheel stand
Dani Estu I just ran a couple uprights, cut a piece of the right size to go between them and stuck my wheel base to it. Made it too high on purpose and had a friend hold the piece with the wheel base at a height that felt right while I sat in the seat...marked that, mounted it and cut off the excess 🤷🏻♂️
@@KameTrick thanks, I will do that for sure OldSchool prevails😂
Decent build my dude, but I personally would have inverted the pedals.
I was into the idea, but didn’t want to invest the extra time at the point of filming...I was stoked to try this new gear haha. Inverted pedals might be a move on my next build 👍🏻
@@KameTrick, I'm planning on building the Ricmotech (if I spelled that right) RS1 soon. The current rig that I have for my G27 is a lot like yours, but I want something a bit more "professional" looking. I skipped the PS4, however I am planning on getting a PS5 soon after it comes out. I guess I'll just always be a Gran Turismo fan! 🤣
I would love to get back into PC sim racing, or even back out on Hallett, but the wife shot Hallett down after I wrecked the 370Z, and the PC just isn't in the budget in the foreseeable future.
@@affliction1979 I was just telling someone about how GT2 and 3 were probably the height of my heavy video game playing days in terms of being able to spend a whole Saturday grinding😅 Hallet looks fun but my drift car has stock brakes so I’d overheat the system in a couple laps...Ricmotech makes solid looking gear though 👏🏻
I get the wood for free and I'm a carpenter. Now I know what to build for my Xbox
There you go, heck yeah
why did you have to show me that this can be done cheap? Well guess I have no excuse now thanks haha. Very good!
Haha glad I could help!
What kind of tires on the s13? Love them
SufferN 918 thank you! I’m running Atara Racing KMZ14 (17x9 0 offset with no spacers) and Federal RSRR fronts, Kenda Kaiser KR20 rears✌🏻
I've watched a tonne of this video's and plans, and everyone complains about how hard it is to get in and out of the rigs. Isn't it an easy fix to build the rig to match the seat in the *MOST* forward position on its rails, then when you want to enter/exit the rig, the seat slides all the way back on rails, and you exit easily?
Kevin Corcoran that works gear if you’re on a traditional slider, yeah! My kit happens to be the type where you position it and then tighten bolts down to hold it there. It was just something I had laying around otherwise I probably would have don’t this
Nice setup i really want to build the exact thing myself can you please realese blueprints or just type the dimentions im begging you 🙏🙏🙏
Nice 👍
elevatordancer thanks dude! I appreciate the support! :)
I'm following this, almost exactly, when drilling holes for the shifter, handbrake and drivetrain, what width drill bit do you use?
I honestly don’t remember. If you already have a box of drill bits, take the bolt to them and pick one slightly thinner than the bolt. If not, go to a hardware store and do the same thing to determine the drill bit you need to buy that’s specific to the bolts in your hand, rather than the ones on my kit😅
Very cool ! :)
Molla thanks for checking it out! I have several DIY builds on the channel, broken into short before-and-after vids or detailed breakdowns with measurements🙌🏻
Do you have any plans or measurements? I want to try and build one myself
Doctor Drift I don’t but that’s a good idea...I’ll try to whip up a video on my setup over the weekend but it’s basically 2 2x8 boards cut in half, spaced as wide as needed (or desired) to fit the seat. There are some things I’d do different in hindsight so I can share them too✌🏻
Have you ever thought about inverting the pedals, would it be easy to modify this frame to accommodate?
I haven’t felt like inverting the pedals would be worth the effort, but making it work with a wood frame should be difficult 👍🏻
@@KameTrick appreciate the reply the video was very informative and i was hoping to do this soon and was just wondering if that's something you had thought of doing. Thanks for that. Keep doing what you're doing. 👍
@@amscaptured6700 right on, I say give it a shot and it will probably work! 🔧 💪🏻
Hey nice video it inspired me to make this for my wood shop class and I was wondering what were all the materials you used for this project
Nicco this has everything you need to know! Pretty much several 2x4 boards and one 2x6 board 👍🏻 ruclips.net/video/oVP_59q_DvI/видео.html
Nicely made, but why have it that low? is there anyway to safely raise it up to chair height?
S81 Gaming you could make the legs taller and it should stay pretty stable and safe. I just didn’t need to for my purposes, taller = more material which adds weight and cost 🤷🏻♂️
Is that blade in the wrong way ?
yes lol
Do you think i can have a 34 inch ultrawide monitor on a monitor arm or is it gonna be to big?
There are RUclips videos of people running ultra wides on arms, so I would imagine so 🤔
So I need seat and rails first - got it.
kilroy987 I think you should build around your gear; ideally you’d have your seat and mounting hardware before starting 👍🏻Happy New Year!
Awesome build! Made me want to build one so im picking up my steering wheel etc up tomorrow. My question is how many peices of wood did you buy in total?
DJ LJG ahhh I don’t perfectly remember but I believe it was around 4 pieces of 2x4 and 1 piece of 2x6. The specific measurements for each piece are in this vid, which I made after tons of ppl asked😁
ruclips.net/video/oVP_59q_DvI/видео.html
I'm building one for the projector outside
Wales Wideman using a projector sounds pretty awesome, assuming it has good color and refresh rates 👍🏻
Whataburger > in n out
B Dawg if we had both up here I might have a different opinion lol 😅 but I do love me some Whataburger :)
Is there blueprints ?
dont you have a video on your pc specs? im looking for one right now and need hints on a pc that can smash out AC cheers buddy
Here’s what I built a couple years back, it’s plenty for the content creation I do. I think the video just before this one in my library tells more about why I got what I did, FWIW
ruclips.net/video/ev4OppPQZj4/видео.html
In today's economy, a carbon fiber setup would be cheaper than wood.
Haha savage but true. Wood body kits will become the rare lightweight performance upgrade? 🤔
If kids are going to be around, it will need to be sanitized and moved frequently for cleaning. Wood will probably fall apart much faster than other materials, especially the joints.
what is the section of the cleats
Is good to use a Rocker gamer chair?
I haven’t tried one but anything that’s decently comfy and can be secured to your sim rig frame is a good choice!
Does the clamp for the base come with the actual CSW when you buy it?
I bought mine used so it’s hard to say, I don’t want to give you bad info so it’s probably better to look up an unboxing video to verify that😅🙏🏻
@@KameTrick Thanks Ben
Hello, i know i am late. I am thinking of build a one of these for my csw 2,5, It is steady? Do you have any flex ? I would be very thankfull if you answered:)
sorry for bad english
TAZRR TAZRR as someone who’s learned a second language as an adult I think your English is just fine 😉
This rig is really steady, If a steel or extruded aluminum rig is 100% is say this is a solid 90%. I don’t notice any flex at all when I’m driving, but sometimes if I look at the side while steering I can see a little bit.
Here’s a detailed build breakdown for this project if you’ve only seen this “fast version” ruclips.net/video/oVP_59q_DvI/видео.html
@@KameTrick Hello, thanks for answering!! Well then i am going to build one of these. Thanks so much for this video!!
TAZRR TAZRR happy to help! I’m still using the same cockpit today and it’s just as solid as when I first built it! As long as you don’t take it apart it’ll do a good job for you 💪🏻
Brother i need the blueprint for this sim rig , please
im really hoping my gf gets me a g29 for xmas man fingers crossed lol
They’re an acceptable entry wheel, but belt drive wheels are the move if your focus is on drifting
How long is it from top to bottom?
I posted the measurements in this video! :)
ruclips.net/video/oVP_59q_DvI/видео.html
Nah, nobody needs a circular saw to build this. A kataba is crazy efficient, easy to keep straight, and it's very cheap, and doesn't take up any space, and a simple backsaw can also be used.
The problem is more that a permanent fixture like this won't fit into my apartment :(
Siana Gearz handsaws can also work, just takes more time...fortunately very little of this design requires perfect cuts 👍🏻 It does take up some space though😅
I need to make a rig that also dubs as a pc desk for othef games with only 28inch wide 67 inch long with screen on the wall
esmokebaby good idea; if I’d built my cockpit higher off the ground I could’ve basically slid it under a normal desk to drive and slid it back out for other games, I built this thinking I’d go VR but that didn’t end up working out 🤷🏻♂️
@@KameTrick so you drift in real cars so what game do you fill is best to learn on that can actualy give you a start to real world drifting
esmokebaby I’m pretty happy to recommend Assetto Corsa on PC with drift-specific mods. The only other game I’ve played that I know has good realism is Live For Speed, but I’m going to try more titles in the future and talk through their features.
@@KameTrick sounds awsome
@@KameTrick have you tried Car-X drift racing on Steam
Does the price include the seat
It’s the cost for the wooden parts. Users can install a seat of their choice 👍🏻
I know im YEARS late but do you have the blueprint to this im looking to build something similar
ruclips.net/video/oVP_59q_DvI/видео.html
Great budget sim. But fanatec tech is a fortune thought, so overall about 2 thousand pounds then lol
Yeah the gear you slap on the cockpit is a whole separate issue 😅
I need a sim drone in yalls sim drifting situation...
thesoundman22 haha that would be an amazing collab, the sim drone racer games are pretty legit!
That said, if you spectate a race and stream your feed to a social media outlet it would be kind of similar?? Except you’d use the keys and mouse to “fly”
@@KameTrick what game is it? Ill look into it.
thesoundman22 I’m going to be doing Assetto Corsa and Live For Speed. I’ve played LFS before back when I used to do sim racing, and I know it’s got a fair bit of replay options, I would assume you can do something similar as a spectator...but I could be wrong🤔
@@KameTrick what system are you playing it on?
thesoundman22 I’ll be playing on PC, at least to start
paint it!
Dae scope out how it came out!😁✌🏻
ruclips.net/video/CtN7XADk83o/видео.html
How's the rigidity
It won’t compete with an aluminum profile cockpit but for the price, it’s quite good 👍🏻
I’ve used an 8Nm belt drive wheel on it (the one in this video) and it’s easily enough.
I now use a 20Nm DD wheel and for drifting or simulating a power steering grip car it’s not perfect but also not really noticeable while driving. If I steer into the lock stops where the wheel is resisting me with 20Nm of force it has some flex, but I don’t drive at anywhere near that FFB. I only use about 10-12Nm and there it feels good 👍🏻
7:50
Why the pedals so close?!
Cause I have short little baby Deadpool legs 🤷🏻♂️
4:35 Smart guys work with a pencil.
🤔 you know of a way to transfer the mark from the bolt head to the surface with graphite? I think a wet medium like a paint marker would be far superior for this specific use case.
@@KameTrick I mean what you used here is a pencil. I do not know English well enough. It was a positive remark.

Haha man the times have changed 👀
You can afford a fanatec wheel, hydro e brake and shifter but can’t afford to buy a nice stand.
MAKINBACON30 I bought all that stuff used...and the reason I can afford what I’ve got is from saving money when I can! Outside of being a bit of a beast to move around, this wood rig is rigid and puts the controls where I wanted them🤷🏻♂️

PHI666 phoenix I didn’t recognize the channel name but I think I’ve seen one or two of his thumbnails pop up in my recommended videos. Either way, I know I’m not the first, people have been building wooden sim cockpits since long before Assetto, and I bet since before LFS too 🤷🏻♂️
Ok
i thought everyone did that, i was expecting you to make a custom steering wheel... total shame. worse still, the knowledge people actually pay instead of building their own. also the knowledge i can't afford any good new steering wheel and pedals and probably never will. if anyone out there reads this, do you have a second hand steering wheel i could buy? i'm in Australia.
