Long time iPhone user here, I’ve used the pixel 8 pro for a good week and absolutely loved every moment of it. I ended up returning it because it didn’t work well into my Apple ecosystem. But to be fair, I didn’t take the time to find alternatives that would work cross platform. I’m going to buy it (actually I’m buying it now) but it’s really good. I would argue that the pixel 8 series is the perfect iPhone replacement if u want to try android

@@karanjoshi2662 Better is of course subjective. It does perform very well, and can often look better than the 7. But the 7 does have a larger sensor and is technically better hardware, and in low light you do get a little more detail in nearly all situations from the 7 - and in specific situations the larger sensor allows low light photos to look a little better overall.
But the 7a still trades blows, and can outperform the 7 in some low light situations. Just not normally in pure detail.

I'm surprised that you were surprised at how "poorly" the Xperia did when you should know it's a pocket DSLR. This is the same shot a DSLR would likely get. Sony prides itself on NOT doing computational photography, which is why they should not have included the Sony.
Literally the only thing that this test shows is who has the best computational photography algorithm. That's it. Nothing more.
Yes, average smartphone buyers expect good computational photography on phones because they want a point and shoot shot that looks like it was taken by a pro.
Sony doesn't play that game. Sony's goal was: how can we get this phone as close to a DSLR as possible so that the pro photographer always has one in his pocket. Not to take a shot on auto, but to choose the lighting, frame the shot, manually adjust exposure, shutter speed etc.
It also doubles as a 4k display for Sony pro cameras, for photo and video.
This is NOT a consumer device. It's not make for them so it's not fair to compare it like this.

@@GH0STST4RSCR34MThe sony auto mode is completely fine and I've been getting very comparable images to modern phones on my xz premium (obviously only in sufficient light scenarios, that's where there has been the least improvements in that part)

It is a consumer device. The Pro lineup is for pros. Normal Xperias are for normal people, except different people than most. Its a phone for tech enthusiasts and people who want something different. I am no pro and i understand photography just broadly but i got the Xperia 5 III when it released because i simply think that it offers me the package of features that make most sense. For the price Sony isn't chasing just some dumb trends and is making a practical phone. With practical aspect ratio screen, no punchole and most importantly a phone which still has a SD card slot and a headphone jack. When it comes to cameras in phones, i like to take pics with them and i also like when my pictures look like how the subject actually looked in reality. And thing is that iPhone or Samsung phones either use some sort of HDR or artificial shaprening or they just overblow the colours and their pics give me uncanny valley vibes. Sony is simply taking pictures of what it sees with no cheating and that is exactly what i want. Yeah it struggles to take a good pic in bad light on basic mode but tbh, in 90% of situations the pictures are great in on basic mode, i don't need to be a pro. I barely ever even touch the pro modes. It is just about what consumers want from their phones. And tbh that overexposed pic from that test is weird. I feel like my Xperia wouldn't do that in in auto mode. Seems like a mistake for sure. Even dumb cameras had a software to help with taking pictures with strong light behind it for years to make sure this doesn't happen.

Can't fixed a flawed take on cameras. They were golden with the S21 Ultra and had some of the more natural looking sharpening back during the Note8-ish days with slightly boosted saturation. Huawei was the one with the super boosted saturation and sharpness. The tables have turned now and Samsung is just horribly mediocre now. Pixels take the best photos overall, Apple is the most well rounded and for me, the Find X6 Pro/Oneplus Open are the best (They got the most votes from me).

I haven't used the S23 Ultra but for most of the other Samsung phones, they take brilliant shots in good light, but if there's any sort of challenging lighting situation, the muddiness and the over sharpening processing irritates the hell out of me. To be fair, the Xperia is known to be a comparatively poor (although for most normal people still ok in nearly all situations) as a point and shoot. It's almost pointless putting it into the competition, other than the random chance it somehow does really well and confuses everyone.
It's entire thing is about it having little processing when you want it to not, and extensive manual control with a "professional" experience. Which is probably why people want you to review it.
Also it's interesting that the 7a does so well, when the sensor it uses had never been used by Google before this phone. Or since. They have great software, but the results can't be down to them having so long to optimise the software for the hardware it's using.

Do you even know what you are talking about? When talking about the Find X6 Pro and night mode shot it actually is one of the majority of phones that gives you control over such shots. As you can disable night mode or jump to pro mode and let Hasselblad colours take over. So its exactly that example where you have the control over such shots. Did you try the Find X6 Pro even?
Xiaomi, Honor, Huawei, Vivo, Sony and others also allow this.

Blind tests are the only ones, that can be told to be somehow reliable.
It's the same thing with Whisky (Scotch vs Japanese) and many other products. When people know, what they're testing right now, this destroys immediately the whole result. The marketing simply did a perfect job and makes them automatically prefer, what they personally prefer.

Remember this isn't a pure photo test. It's am auto mode, point and shoot test. And the Xperia isn't really about point and shoot. It's competent and that's the best you can say about it, last place with point and shoot is where everyone would expect it to be.
The Xperia is primarily about being a professional photography experience, with all manual controls and no AI messing around with it.

iPhone low light problem that has existed since iPhone 12...
if you ever try taking low light photo of Asians in low light conditions. Their skin turns out ORANGE!
Always beware before you share photos in low light that has an asian in the group!
I was very disappointed iPhone 15 Pro Max has NOT fixed this issue. I mean, if I stared at it long enough, the orange skin tone has reduced somewhat for the IP15, but when put side by side to S23u, P8P, P7P, it absolutely stands out!
It's not acceptable on a flagship iPhone.
Pixel needs to have more profiles or color settings. The detault makes the photos too flat and unnatural sometimes. At least S23u has dialed down the over-saturated / over-processed look. Waiting for the s24u to arrive soon!
