SUPER helpful! I just learned how to do the butterfly stroke from this video. My back, breast and freestyle have always been strong but my butterfly was just non-existent till now.
Wanted to say thank you for the don't go slow tip. As someone still trying to figure this stroke out at all, I tend to try and slow down to think about technique and then get frustrated.
Wow this was super helpful, I never learned how to do butterfly so I’m trying to learn from your videos. Good stuff! Also totally makes sense why I can’t do a slow breaststroke, I noticed in my workout yesterday I can’t do a slow lap of breaststroke without going too deep underwater with each stroke.
This video is really great. I especially appreciate your point that you cannot swim butterfly "slowly." That's such a huge misconception. If you slow down, the timing of the entire stroke suffers. I also believe that all the butterfly learning videos that employ lots of slow motion footage are a big problem. When you watch the stroke in slow motion, you lose the sense of flow and that momentum you need to actually swim the stroke correctly. If you're in the water and try to emulate the slow motion videos, your stroke will not work. You can only swim butterfly fast, with momentum and a steady and strong forward motion. I find that this stroke is all about fast and fluid full-body movement that carries from one part of the stroke into the next.
@@allenliu7519 what's wrong with you? no one asked you either. how do you know I am the only person who feels that? you asked everyone? zero logic and sense in your reply.
Swimming butterfly slowly IS a very good drill to me, even it might be a mistake to others. It helps me to cut each élément of the stroke, especially the recovery, and to put each élément of the system at its place. The head down, then the recovery ! As fast and low as possible. In fact, it helps me to feel all what the teacher says here, at my humble level. I also create a body memory and perhaps a good core training. (I must give it is Bad for my legs movement !) I focus on not being disqualified and being able to swim every Olympic distance. In the end, as if the teacher was always and universaly right, I cease swimming slowly by accelerating, working my heart beating and the knowing myself. Which is very well introduced by the teacher here ! But think of one thing: you might improve your level by listening his lessons ! You have to know how much.
The tip that made me understand it all: there IS a part of thé stroke where you have to rest.... Not exactly to rest, but to slide, with your lungs full of good air... Just like if you tried a New birth ! Someone said it well, believed him...
Funny, our Masters coach just told me this week to not sweep wide upon hand entry! So today I was working on that thinking "essentially two free style pulls"! Thanks for the tips!
Your technique tips are great. I focus on building a strong core & kick especially when teaching beginners. Lots of leg lifts, body lifts, sit-ups and "back-kick" workouts. Dolphins do very well without arms.
This is really good, even though I swim a slower butterfly, because I do 2k butterfly in my training usually. The techniques shown here really help my technique stay tight.
Thank you very much for these tips. For me however, one thing that put me off butterfly is that it looked like the only way to swim it is fast. I am not built for speed. It was only when I discovered ‘Art Of Swimming’ butterfly that I decided to learn this stroke. It is now my most favourite of all.
Great tips! About not swimming slow... Do you make a difference between gliding and swimming slow? I really feel like you said and need to use power to do a stroke but I do also can control the effort by gliding a bit (or more 😉) while I'm in the stretched position. I remember doing good 200 fly overgliding this way. Still, I always tought butterfly to be fun 25m 😂, probably because we can fully feel the style at high speed.
Really good video! I've had the problem with sweaping and my breathing technique for a while now, so i mainly need to work on that, but i honestly really appreciate the fact that i can finally improve my timings and techniques in 100M , 50M, and 200M
Man, thats realy true with the head too high point, thats exactly what i am doing wrong and of course will start to practise, as soon as the water is more than 8 degress outside..... I mean i have the power in my arms, from my Cross Fit times years ago, but thís made me slow.... I didnt realy catched the 4th point (bending knees). Might be a translation problem, but I will figure it out Thanks a lot at this point and kepp on doing!
My butter fly has always been weak and I've been meaning to precipice it more especially for IM because my backstroke is pretty groovy my breast stroke I usually end up in front again and then free I just go all in for the win but hopefully using these tips will be like the missing link to making my IM faster!
Very helpful video- I can't figure out if stroke count is defined by kick or arm pull though (and even with the kick it's confusing what counts as one full- up or down or up and down). I think I breathe every arm pull and do 2 kicks per. Sounds hard to do two pulls in one breath. But it might help go faster
I wasn't expecting doing my butterfly so bad until I figured out all of these points the head high I think is the easiest to work on I will try it as soon as possible now I see why I feel I am faster without breathing makes too much sense, thanks for sharing this
Yeah, I got a lot to fix on my fly, but the next big thing is probably the breathing pattern, at regionals this year, I went around a 27 for my first 50 and then a 32 for my second, was definitely burnt out
Yeah 5 seconds is too much of a difference I usually try to have only a 3 second difference. Recently I went a 24.3 28.3 though so I need to work on that too lol
Very good!!!tarde en traducirlo (mi inglés es basico)pero valió la pena..por favor..sería de gran ayuda subtitulos en español!!!muchas gracias x los videos estoy suscrita y los veo siempre que puedo !
I completely disagree with the slow butterfly comments. I try and find efficiency with every cycle and go into a nano-rest phase and glide. I can swim butterfly for many laps and concentrate on form timing and composure. Swimming fast is really a burn-out game, said the recovering heart surgery patient. Slow down and get everything correct. I'd love a response to this if you agree or disagree.
I also don't really agree with the no slow butterfly. I've found that slowing it down really helped me focus on the stroke and putting it together with my body motion and breathing. It let's me save my endurance so I'm able to get a lot more practice in a single session than I was when I was swimming fast.
I disagree with the insistence that swimming butterfly must never be done slowly; indeed, it can be swum slowly. Like anything in life that is complex, if you cannot work out the exact timing by doing something slowly and then progressing to different tempos once achieving success, your technique will not reach its full potential and become stale Swimming distance fly is about composure and equanimity. The slow comment is not brilliant and incorrect unless it is about going as fast as possible, which is still inaccurate. Who cares? The obsession with speed is ill-advised and pointless unless you try to win something. There is so much more to swimming than winning and going fast. Seriously, this is play; why does it have to be a competition? I have added a new feature to my fly, it is a triple-dolphin kick. The third and previously non-existent kick is executed after the hands enter the water and in streamline position, then add a strong kick while in streamline. This extra kick, not intended to make you go faster; but allows one to savor each complete stroke cycle and provides the space and time to reset and begin the process again. Once the timing is in place, you can add one or several more kicks in the streamline position. Calm down, have fun, and let go of the obsession to go FAST! Evolve, explore the possibilities and challenge the so-called experts.

I recently had a breakthrough in my butterfly. A woman watched me swim and told me that I was rushing my stroke. I always had the belief that if I wasn't getting enough lift, it was because I wasn't swimming fast enough. As a result, I wouldn't allow enough time in the glide part of my stoke. Once I put a slight pause at the end of the glide, I found my backward push to be much more effective and now my arms are flying over the water surface. 😁I hope this helps someone with the same problem.
I can swim very slowly if I want but maybe the technique is altered, l delay the recovery and glide more. Anyway it’s preferable over a free style relaxed swimming because you can look ahead, especially in open water
Hey I have a question, i wanted to know if it is correct to the first 25 or 30 or even 35 m not to breath and then breath one or two times in a 50m race, and in the 100m the first stroke when you go out of the water not to breath but then breath in every stroke
@Jacob Thorpe well yeah that with the 100 meters i knew it, but i didn't know if breathing in every stroke in the 100 is ok, except the breakout of course
Greetings! I have just landed on this helpful tutorial. I am trying to increase my butterfly yardage as I train to swim a 5k butterfly. I have noticed that as I embark on a long butterfly swim, I slow down right from the start - knowing the distance in front of me. I fear I may be compromising my stroke? I have looked at video of myself and think I am following the rules - head down (working on improving this), not bending my knees, wide over-the-water-recovery, two-freestyle/style strokes for underwater recovery (i.e. not sweeping wide under water), and I breathe every stroke. I average about 1:50-2:00 per hundred over 4,000 yards. Nonetheless, I feel SLOW. Thoughts?
I really like the butterfly, however, having trouble getting my arms 'completely" out of the water. This was my stroke in the 1970's on the swim team (with the freestyle :-)!!
This bloke you were correcting regarding his pull is that guy from Global Triathlon Network, who also used to swim competitively? Wow, interesting how everyone of us, including swimmers, has to check his technique from time to time. Swimming is like ballet, you have to chek if everything is in order constantly.
A few times after I do the butterfly stroke my wrists are touching each other. Should I be doing a triangle like shape with my thumb and index finger after the butterfly stroke? What should I do?
Hi there! Your hands should be entering the water shoulder-width apart. From there, your arms should be pulling down and behind you, similar to a movement of throwing a ball from above your head to the ground. Hope that helps!
My technique was pretty good but one big mistake I was doing was to not put my head down and look to the floor after I’ve taken a breath. A swimming coach has corrected me once and I’m super thankful for that since I managed to improve my technique a lot with the advise to put my head down after breathing in.
@@FaresKsebati yep. Swimming butterfly now while leaving my arms stretched out in front while kicking a couple of times is now more relaxing, improves my overall posture and nearly feels like a yoga pose 😄
For fly and all strokes for that matter but especially fly, don't forget to keep exhaling when your face is in the water. Forgetting to exhale and holding your breath will fatigue you so fast in fly.

But could you tell us about the benefits of that breathing pattern, if it became consistent ? It is the way to improve it, says the teacher.
