    Today, Sunday, I was in Edinburgh Scotland for church. I’ve never been in a Relief Society meeting that was as on fire as this meeting. Women of the Covenant from all over the world were testifying of God and His Christ in a marvelous manner. It’s all true. It’s all true.

    "Nobody is in an ill-temper, nobody is the worse for drink, nobody swears an oath or uses a coarse word, nobody appears depressed, nobody is weeping, and down upon the deck in every corner where it is possible to find a few square feet to kneel, crouch or lie in, people, in every suitable attitude for writing, are writing letters. Now, I have seen emigrants ships before this day in June. And these people are strikingly different from all other people in like circumstances whom I have ever seen, and I wonder aloud, "What would a stranger suppose these emigrants to be!'…I should have said they were in their degree, the pick and flower of England" --Charles Dickens, after visiting an immigration ship headed to Zion.

    Amazing podcast, most of my ancestors are from Scotland, it has made me want to study this movement to see if I have any ancestors that were involved. We’ve got to keep doing the work for our ancestors in the Temples of the Lord

    Thank you for sharing these stories of the sacrifices these covenanters made; they are so inspiring! And the point that it's through covenants with God that we will save the constitution makes it sound so simple. I absolutely loved this episode! ❤

    Very fascinating story about the covenanters. Liberty cannot exist without righteousness and righteousness will flourish under liberty. Despotism is a tool of the adversary. What earthly King is so full of himself that he thinks he's king above Christ? Well, now we know.

    It is amazing the Extraordinary courage of the people of God. This is the proof of the power of the spirit even on times of darkness. God was stirring the hearts of people to bring forth the restoration, even that early.

    Thank ! Your personal history brought me to tears! Such a heartbreaking time in history. We tend to look back on these terrible things but give little credence to the thought that it could happen in modern times. We're too civilized for that to happen today! Not so! It's already begun!
    The thought occurred to me as i listened. If I'm ever asked to denounce my covenants, how can i do less than those righteous covenanters of old, to give my life to uphold them? I cannot.

    This was so interesting to watch. I grew up in a very strict, conservative SDA family, and we had quite a similar mindset and appreciation of history and the human struggle for liberty. Ultimately I ended up leaving that faith because our doctrines couldn't be supported by the best historical evidence, but I still appreciate the conviction and sincerity we had.
    It seems right now, the majority of Americans use the liberty we have in our country to live according to their human nature and it's lusts with as little hindrance as possible. And, all religious teachings are seen to be some combination of unscientific and unethical. The big crisis straight ahead seems to be population collapse because there's no secular foundation for the existence of families.
    I have no idea what will change this country for the better, at this point.

    • @JosephSmithFoundation
      @JosephSmithFoundation  7 месяцев назад +3

      Hannah: I cannot tell you how much I agree with what you said regarding liberty being used for selfish purposes and to satisfy lust. Too often, even, the fight to defend rights is driven from selfish motivation, rather than laying down your life to serve others. This is a huge cause behind our downfall, in my opinion.

    BTW Hannah, the quote from the King saying that he has no more power in Scotland than a “Doge” in Venice….. the word is not a British spelling of “dog”. Actually, the Doge of Venice (pronounced like “dodge” but with a long “o” sound) was a very important ruler in Venice-- basically a President/Prince of medieval Venice. So King Charles I would have been familiar with the power of the Doge in Venice, and still lamented how powerless he was with the Scots.

    Every ordinance has a covenant, or covenants, associated with it. You cannot just randomly call things ordinances or covenants without understanding what they are and what they represent. There is baptism of water, an ordinance with covenants, and there is a baptism of fire, an ordinance with covenants. Every commandment is NOT a covenant, and every ordinance is certainly NOT a covenant. In a covenant, there is a two-way agreement between God and man that we will keep the commandments associated with the covenant, and to make that binding, we perform an ordinance. A commandment is something God directs us to do, and if we comply, there are certain blessings; there are no ordinances associated with commandments. We can all make this same covenant that King Benjamin's people did by seeking for and obtaining the baptism of fire and the holy ghost (the ordinance) - that is how they received a remission of their sins.
