  • John Linneman and Rich Leadbetter sit down to discuss the improvements made to Ghost of Tsushima as the title transitions from PS4/PS4 Pro/PS5 Back Compat to a native PlayStation 5 game. Just how much of an improvement is the PS5-centric code - and what about the updates to combat and controller mechanics?

      Because sony is happy that you bought a PS5 so they give it to you $20 cheaper as a thank you. Many games do this, the complete edition of a game maybe is like $70 but if you buy the game they buy the dlc later on your paying extra, its to encourage users to make bigger purchases at once because they feel like they will save money in the long run. Perfect example is dark souls 3 season pass is $25 for both dlc, but if you pay seperately its $15 each. This is a common and effective marketing tactic.

      It does impact performance but only when you run out of memory. It's like texture resolution. If you have the memory for it, then it barely affects fps. But the game starts stuttering if you run out of memory. The consoles have less overall memory than many PCs (which have both VRAM and system RAM).

      I thought last Gen had the cpu excuse but this Gen no longer has that excuse or the RAM excuse. 16 gb is more than enough to handle the tiny 2 fps hit (if that)
      Either way, I'd rather have a 10 fps drop than have pointlessly blurry textures anytime they're at angle. Honestly it's more important than the texture res itself. At least with 16 X af the visuals are consistent

      Why would you have less situational awareness with lock on? The issue was that keeping the camera on the current target was a pain and took away from the flow of combat when you always had to take your thumbs off the attack buttons to move the camera. But now we also have different control schemes that would allow you to keep you finger on the attack buttons R1/R2 while using the stick for camera control. Options are good.

    • @VincentFischer
      @VincentFischer 3 года назад +1

      @@MasterMayhem78 Yes the camera loses lock often (or tries to make some dramatic camera swoosh) but your characters is still maintaining it's lock. you can easily attack in any direction regardless of the camera so with high situational awareness (having a mental map pf the world and knowing what is where, in which direction it moves and so on) you can still attack the desired enemy because you can compensate in your head for any camera direction. the moving camera makes everything more dynamic, statically locking it to an enemy would be lame imho and take something away (it's clearly modelled after some cinematic style camera movement). Also, you are constantly attacked from many directions concurrently, in my mind camera lock would make it very tedious. But I agree, having options is good.

    The graphical improvements the PS5 has over the PS4 is the fact that the game now runs at 4K albeit a reconstructed version of it and it now runs at the hardest most solid 60fps even on "Higher Resolution" mode.

They haptics would really be the only noticeable thing. Then the conversion of the cutscenes that add something that most people just aren't going to care about.

    Kinda disappointed there doesn't seem to be much improvement in texture quality/filtering for things like ground and other materials. Both could be pretty glaring in places even on Pro, and you would think they would've taken more effort to improve that. It really stood out in places. A bit disappointed in the "upgrade" here, especially when it's charged for. It is an upgrade. But very minimal visually for most players. A native 4k res Mode with a 30fps cap would've been interesting. The checkerboarding they use is not the best in motion, compared to like, HZD.
    But man, even just the texture filtering. You can see the filter distance at like only a few feet from the character, practically.

One thing I wish more developers did is to release a feature complete and patched version on disk like these guys did. I know I'm part of a dying breed but I still buy a lot of games on disk. I feel like it defeats the purpose of having a physical copy if what is on the disk is broken. Whats really the point then? Glad this game has a perfect version of it on disk so it can be enjoyed for decades to come.

    To each his own. Dirt 5's trigger resistance in particular I wish was much stronger. Same goes for trigs and haptics in Returnal and Valhalla. Oftentimes, I have to slow down, going out of my way to appreciate the feedback. It all gets lost so easily when all focus is dialed into the gameplay. Astro and Control (well as Dirt 5's haptics) are the only ones to have utilized the DualSense to my preference.

    • @Ben-Rogue
      @Ben-Rogue 3 года назад

      You can't have too much trigger resistance for racing games as it will cause fatigue in your fingers. As someone who plays a lot of them, it would make me not want to play if it were constantly resisting throttle input especially. If it had the option to fine tune it, that'd be better

      I don't think DF has a hardcore audiophile on the team. Frame rate and ray tracing fanatics, definitely. Not so much emphasis on audio. Sound doesn't get mentioned as much as other things here. I think ACG runs through sound quality and design in just about every review. I'm sure there are others out there that go further into it.

      This is something really lacking today. I have searched everywhere and can't find any up-to-date list of 3D audio implementation in games, and reviews of said implementation.
      For example, you can still find Assassin's Creed Valhalla branded as 3D Audio compatible when it's not true (and it sounds really horrible).

      @@thierry2720 This is a problem that goes way back. I had a Marantz/ VM Series Polk 7.1 lossless home theater setup with the PS3, and it was like pulling teeth trying to get anything useful out of Sony regarding what formats and configurations were even supported in a game. I was dumbfounded trying to understand why Sony gave the PS3 impressive audio hardware for the time yet their employees didn't know anything about it. I called Sony regarding multiple games, and most of them flat out didn't know what type of sound their games used. Naughty Dog's games always selected the appropriate configuration automatically and sounded incredible, but it was much more of a chore with other games. Thankfully it's a somewhat better situation now but far from ideal. I'm not a fan of Naughty Dog's storytelling these days, but I wish other developers followed their example in audio options and interface.

      The best example is the "headphones" option (when you have one) in games. Sometimes, it's a bare bones stereo feed. Sometimes, it's a downgraded virtual 5.1/7.1. Sometimes, it's a full-on virtual surround. Sometimes, it's even binaural 3D audio.
      And that's before trying to understand what the 3D Audio setting of the PS5 will do to the audio feed...
      I have come to this conclusion :
      - PS4 game : 3D Audio off (unless it's games which had a specific Sony Platinum Headset 3D Audio mode - like Naughty Dogs games or Horizon Zero Down)
      - First party PS5 games : 3D Audio on
      - Third party PS5 games : generally 3D Audio off, but I'll have to dig on internet for more information to be sure
      In 2021, it shouldn't be that convoluted to use correctly one of the most marketed specs of a new gen console...
      I'm thinking of buying a 7.1 theater in the near future, but that situation makes me hesitate : will I be able to take advantage of it when gaming? From what you say and what I gathered, it's far from sure...
