@jlilly7913 prime was a kick returner and a DB. Lots have done that in the nfl. Prime was not good at baseball. Bo was a all star in baseball and football. One of the greatest individual accomplishment in one game in modern SPORTS history, when the competition is at it’s highest. Am I only one who remembers Stephen A saying a few years ago that Shohei Ohtani cannot be the face of MLB ??? ...I am glad that he has changed his tune. Shannon is always fair, he never injects his prejudices into an argument.
Facts! Thats not to downplay this season, it just highlights that he’s actually flown UNDER the radar. I would argue that each season from 2021-2023 was way better than this year. 🦄
Why are they comparing Ohtani to a guy who probably couldn’t have even reached 40 homers in a season without swallowing every drug he could get his hands on and still lies about it like a criminal?
hmmm... I recall a double header last year where Ohtani pitched a complete shutout game, then hit two homers in the second game as DH... so as for best performance by an MLB player in the modern era, we can argue the skill level it takes to do that.
Agreed. Like many things with Ohtani, that game also flew under the radar. Glad he’s finally getting his due credit this year. It’s funny that it took nice round numbers (50/50) to get the well deserved attention. I’ve been checking his box score every game since 2021, it’s the most fun I’ve had following the regular season since 1998.
@@trevor8307 in 2022 he had a game with 13k's, 8 innings scoreless... while going 3 or 3 at bat... 8 RBI's on 2 homers... I think this line is even more impressive than 6 for 6 hitting in my opinion... Yeah, he's been ridiculous for a long time.
It’s possible he’s had a few games that were better…it’s just that no one realized it. As time goes by, he his value might actually appreciate like a “cult” movie.

remove "since ken griffey jr"... he was an amazing player, but ohtani has a significantly higher ops+ this season than griffey ever had, had more hitting war than griffey ever had, stole more bases this season than griffey ever has, and isnt even pitching this year
There's a group called The Baseball Project I actually saw this year with Peter Buck and Mike Mills from REM fame. All their songs involve a baseball theme, including spit balls, disco demolition, Ted Williams, Dale Murphy and a song called Ohtani.
I like the fact that SA, at the end mentioned the contract. We all know when a player is in a contract year. All of their stats go thru the roof. And then the following season they seem to underperform. But wow.... It's great to be Los Doyers fan
Shannon you forgot to mention my favorite baseball player of all time- Ricky Henderson. Sure he only hit 28 home runs in 1990. But he batted .325 with 65 stolen bases. I'd say he was pretty good.
Shohei Ohtani's September 19, 2024 game is considered one of the greatest single-game performances in baseball, but it's part of a larger list of iconic feats in the sport's history. Some other performances that stand out include: Don Larsen's Perfect Game (1956 World Series): Larsen pitched the only perfect game in World Series history, a monumental achievement in a high-pressure situation . Kerry Wood’s 20-Strikeout Game (1998): In only his fifth MLB start, Wood struck out 20 batters while allowing just one hit, tying the MLB record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game . Reggie Jackson’s 3 Home Runs in a World Series Game (1977): Known as “Mr. October,” Jackson hit three home runs on three consecutive pitches in Game 6 of the World Series, securing the Yankees' championship Babe Ruth’s Called Shot (1932): In Game 3 of the World Series, Ruth allegedly pointed to the center field and then hit a home run in that exact direction, adding to his legend . Shohei Ohtani’s 50/50 Game (2024): Ohtani became the first player ever to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season, capping it off with a 6-for-6 performance, including three home runs
This is a great accomplishment. It will probably never be duplicated again. His biggest advantage in today’s game is the diluted pitching because of expansion. There are so many pitchers that would never had made a major league roster when Mantel, Maris, Aaron and many others played.
Underrated comment. Yet very relevant and true to a significant degree. You also must consider the global nature of the game (Japan, Latin America) that has created a much greater talent pool to draw from than you had in bygone eras of MLB. Also, the specter of racial segregation kept Ruth from facing all the best U.S.-born baseball players. So, these factors mitigate your point to some extent. Overall though, I've been watching MLB for 50 years and I agree that the general quality of pitching has declined significantly in this current era.
@@DigThugDoug It's not about just the pitching velocity or even movement on those pitches. It's about the changing standards of the game over time. A larger strike zone favors pitchers and a smaller strike zone favors hitters. The fact is that in 1950 the official strike zone (and the way strikes were actually called) was significantly smaller than it is today and from 1963 until 1988 it the strike zone was super tiny in both respects compared to where it is today. Since 1988 the official strike zone has moved from the top of the knee to just below the knee, and it's moved up from the armpits to the top of the shoulders. So it's easier to pitch today than it was in 1950, 1963 or 1969 when the strike zone rules changed (prior to 1988). Since 1996 it has been super easy to pitch strikes compared to what pitchers facing Mantle, Mays and Aaron had to deal with. A Gibson, a Blyleven or a Perry would have 400 wins if they played under these rules. High velocity pitching with movement is MUCH harder to do under the old rules. For example, nowadays Aroldis Chapman (a high-velocity pitcher with a large statistical sample size) is considered great. In 1950 he would be labeled a novelty with control issues. Also, remember there was a dead ball era in MLB when the ball was softer and didn't carry as well. All of these are real factors. So those old pitchers like Cy Young had an advantage over pitchers in latter eras. So, yes, Ohtani has historical advantages because the most recent rule changes favor offense (pitch clock, outlawimg the shift, etc.). And in a roundabout way he has a historic advantage as a hitter because the pitching talent pool is diluted (too many teams) and the pitchers are less disciplined today. But he's still GOAT-great, not just great. Lord help today's pitchers if they had to face Ohtani under the old rules. He'd break the record for total bases for sure on top of everything else.

Bo was lights out at the highest level in TWO totally different sports. Ohtani is lights out in two phases of the same sport. In that way, I say he's more like Deion than Bo.
Prime was a beast on special teams and defense in the NFL. Ohtani is a beast on offense and defense in MLB.
@jlilly7913 prime was a kick returner and a DB. Lots have done that in the nfl. Prime was not good at baseball. Bo was a all star in baseball and football. Ohtani hits 50+ home runs and throws 100mph. I say he's like BO because there has never been a dominant pitcher and hitter in MLB. Lol its almost offensive to BO and Ohtani that you even mentioned Deion in the same post
@@VivaLasVegasX I see your point. I was simply comparing the fact that Bo accomplished his feats in two different sports at the highest level. Ohtani isn't doing that. He's a multi-trick pony extraordinaire, but all in one sport. In that respect (only), he's like Deion.
But as far as level of performance, Ohtani is light years ahead of Prime. Nevertheless, I still think Bo is the king because even Ohtani has a predecessor (Ruth) who did what he's doing (somewhat). There's absolutely no one else in history who has ever done what Bo did, which is why he's the greatest athlete ever in American team sports, IMHO.
@jlilly7913 as much as I don't like lebron he probably could have been a stud TE in the nfl too.
@@jlilly7913 Ruth never did what Ohtani has done. Ruth pitched, then hit. Ohtani is the only player in the history of the game to qualify for both ERA title (min 162IP) and BA title (min 3.1PA per team game) in the same season. They are both elite at both, but only Ohtani at the same time.
"He worth a billy". Factssss
"Can't say enough about him" - Yet he was the one that said this guy can't be the face of MLB because he couldn't speak English. I didn't know baseball had a language barrier. That comment sticks with him forever. In the words of HIS own? Blasphemy! In my own, dude your words are ASSinine lol
One of the greatest individual accomplishment in one game in modern SPORTS history, when the competition is at it’s highest. It’s like watching Kobe score 81 points, MJ dropping 63 pts in the playoffs, like watching Tiger Woods beating the field at the Masters by 12 strokes… Ohtani 6 for 6, 2 doubles, 2 steals, 3 HR, 10 RBI on a day where he founded the 50-50 club and topped if off by going 51-51.
Molly said "arguably his best game". What? Thats the best game ever in MLB history!
Ok?
@@sirrogerismeOk what? It’s an ignorant comment.

He’s also still recovering from injury, next year it’s going to be insane.
With all due respect to unc and Stephen A, please please don’t talk about baseball you guys don’t know what you’re talking about 2:02 unc said Acuna had 70rbis he had 70 stolen bases and Stephen A said ohtani can’t be the face of the league and now he’s on the train which is fine I’m glad he is but I don’t think they really pay attention to baseball except for the headlines
He really ate those words about Ohtani
He is Mr. Beast of baseball. ⚾️
Give him a bonus is just amazing 👏
She tried so hard to look like she was participating in the chat but her wandering eyes and listless expression betrayed her 😅
Am I only one who remembers Stephen A saying a few years ago that Shohei Ohtani cannot be the face of MLB ??? ...I am glad that he has changed his tune. Shannon is always fair, he never injects his prejudices into an argument.
If Ohtani played in Babe Ruth era he would have 10,000 hr vs 714 hr
He is jealous of Otani.
Honestly ohtanis other season where he hit like 45 hr and pitched like 140 innings is more impressive to me. Pitching and hitting is still insane
Facts! Thats not to downplay this season, it just highlights that he’s actually flown UNDER the radar. I would argue that each season from 2021-2023 was way better than this year. 🦄

"Arguably the best game of his career." No, its arguably the best game of anyone's career.
Ohtani underpaid - Shannon is mfing right
Ohtani got plenty of endorsements more than M. Jordan .

Why are they comparing Ohtani to a guy who probably couldn’t have even reached 40 homers in a season without swallowing every drug he could get his hands on and still lies about it like a criminal?
Barry Bonds didn't use steroids in 1993 and hit 46 home runs.

@@fp8901 How do you know he wasn’t on steroids? He’s a proven liar and cheater so nothing he says can be taken at face value.
That last homer off Brujan was absolutely demolished. Hit so hard it may no longer be a ball.
Listening to Steven A and Shannon talk about baseball is like listening to to my grandma talk about rap music.
It really is stunning!
1:10 Dang look at how sweaty Shannon is

Ohtani has a different kind of Aura😤
It usually drives me crazy when professional athletes don’t speak English after a few years. But for Ohtani…it almost adds to the mystique.
What would the world of sports say if he wasn't called out on that triple and hit for the cycle yesterday too..
They be like “ he didn’t throw a no hitter yesterday “ Absolute Greatness.
It looks save to me
He reached 50/50 in less games than the other four guys reached 40/40 in their campaigns
@@jaykoh1514 Wow, did I forget about that game? Do you remember what team it was against so I can find the line score?
It’s possible he’s had a few games that were better…it’s just that no one realized it. As time goes by, he his value might actually appreciate like a “cult” movie.

Amazing Shohei 👍🦸♂️
GOAT stuff
I’ve never followed baseball, but have ever since Ohtani joined
just give him the MVP Award!
If you value batting average and on-base percentage, then you have to concede that Bonds had at least 5 seasons that were better than Ohtani's 2024 season.
Bonds 93: 46 HR, 29 SB, .336 BA, .458 OBP
Bonds 01: 73 HR, 13 SB, .328 BA, .515 OBP
Bonds 02: 46 HR, 9 SB, .370 BA, . 582 OBP
Bonds 03: 45 HR, 7 SB, .341 BP, .529 OBP
Bonds 04: 45 HR, 6 SB, .362 BA, .609 OBP
Ohtani 24: 53 HR, 55 SB, .280 BA, .383 OBP
The day Jeff Passan schooled Steven A on Ohtani 😂. I still remember that day. He doesn’t know shit about baseball.
Well spoken and respectful. Absolutely no tattoos. That's a high quality person from JAPAN. LONG LIVE OHTANI
Really?!? Tattoos?!?
We havent seen nothing like him since ken griffey jr. He creates awesss!!! In every stadium...
remove "since ken griffey jr"... he was an amazing player, but ohtani has a significantly higher ops+ this season than griffey ever had, had more hitting war than griffey ever had, stole more bases this season than griffey ever has, and isnt even pitching this year
There's a group called The Baseball Project I actually saw this year with Peter Buck and Mike Mills from REM fame. All their songs involve a baseball theme, including spit balls, disco demolition, Ted Williams, Dale Murphy and a song called Ohtani.
Great segment
I'm glad espn covered ohtani's legendary game and season dude is the real deal
Ohtani: NL MVP and Judge: AL MVP
It’s nowhere near close
Some other performances that stand out include:
Don Larsen's Perfect Game (1956 World Series): Larsen pitched the only perfect game in World Series history, a monumental achievement in a high-pressure situation
.
Kerry Wood’s 20-Strikeout Game (1998): In only his fifth MLB start, Wood struck out 20 batters while allowing just one hit, tying the MLB record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game
.
Reggie Jackson’s 3 Home Runs in a World Series Game (1977): Known as “Mr. October,” Jackson hit three home runs on three consecutive pitches in Game 6 of the World Series, securing the Yankees' championship
Babe Ruth’s Called Shot (1932): In Game 3 of the World Series, Ruth allegedly pointed to the center field and then hit a home run in that exact direction, adding to his legend
.
Shohei Ohtani’s 50/50 Game (2024): Ohtani became the first player ever to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season, capping it off with a 6-for-6 performance, including three home runs
Stephen, it's about time you speech the truth!!!
Funny how Stephen is now a fan. Also Stephen a few months back "It's a shame to have Shohei as the face of MLB".
Lmao, most pitchers during mantle and Aaron's time wouldn't get a spot on today's mlb
@@jlilly7913huh? The pitching is the best it’s ever been.
Pitchers are throwing 100 mph now compared to 80 mph in the 1950s
If you look closely, you can see Stephen A wincing in pain from giving Ohtani props and praise 😂
