Ted Williams 1941 last two games of the year. On that day Williams’ batting average was .3996. Williams’ manager asked him if he wanted to sit out the doubleheader because his average of .3996 would round up to .400. Williams said no he wanted to play both games of the doubleheader. Williams went 6 for 8 that day and raised his average to .406. Last man to hit .400 and what a gutsy way to finish the season off. That’s why Williams is such a legend.
This is what I was thinking as well. I believe it was a last day of the season double header, which how many of those have ever happened. But "technically" that was over 2 games. One day, but 2 games, which might make it more impressive now that I think about it.
2 more attainable records for this season. Babe Ruth's 54hrs in his 1st year with a new team & Rickey Henderson's 13Hr & 13 stolen in the same game , which Shohei tied yesterday. 3 MVP's in 7 seasons ? Shohei is a Hall of famer already.
Ohtani already tied Rickey’s record. 🙂 That home run mark is doable, too. Six of LA’s final 9 games aes against the Rockies. Shohei’s also got a decent shot of catching Judge for the MLB lead. Aaron was up by something like 10 or 12 homers before he went into a 16 game homerless drought. Now he’s up by two, I think?
Greatest Performance in Baseball history. He not only went 6/6 but set the record for 50/50+, the first time in the LONG history of MLB in today's pro environment. Unmatched.
Not really...in fact it should go down in history as one the sport's most shameful outings wherein we find a team quitting well in advance of game's end...stooping to such depths as to lob 60mph batting practice softballs up to the opposition - insulting all those that seek to uphold the true spirit of competition in all their sporting endeavors not to mention in having given up prematurely, threatening the very integrity of the game of professional baseball
Indeed, one of the most remarkable records in baseball history is Shohei Ohtani's dual achievement in 2022 as both a pitcher and a batter, attaining a specific milestone in each capacity.
Ohtani has the most 450'+ homeruns in Dodgers history. In his first season. Also has the record for most consecutive stolen bases without being thrown out. In his first season
Exactly! But like - what do we expect of this guy? Lol. Now they’re talking about the possibility of him pitching in the post season? I don’t think that’s going to happen.
It’s more fun, certainly; and I’m really glad that MLB tweaked to rules to make base-stealing more worthwhile, but 50 doubles & 50 homers is demonstrably more valuable than 50 homers and & 50 steals. There’s only one guy who’s pulled that combo off, too, btw, and that was during baseball’s strike-shortened 144 game 1995 season. (Albert Belle had 52 doubles & 50 homers for Cleveland in 1995.)
@@grahamstrouse1165 Homeruns and doubles are basically the same thing, just that one is inferior to the other. And sure, if you compare 1HR & 1DB with 1HR & 1SB, it does look like the former is better. But look at it from a defensive side. When it's a no runner situation, they're approximately the same thing. But that's not my main argument. If you're going to talk about long balls and hitting prowess like HR and DB, you'd have to talk about total bases. having 50HR/50DB is a humongous feat, no doubt, and I strongly believe Albert Belle should get more ecognition for that. But looking at it TB wise, Belle of 1995 had 377, Judge 2022 had 391, Barry 2001* had 411*. Shohei this year already has 377. Do you see where I'm getting at? Shohei has the same amount of TB as 95 Belle already with 51 steals. Bell 95 had 5 steals. I was a big Albert Belle fan back then and furious about Mo winning the MVP (I still am), and I appreciate people bringing his name up again, but I don't think his 95 season compares with Ohtani's 2024. But thanks for bringing back my memories of Albert Belle. He was a beast for those 3-4 years!
@@clubeyxander5132you can’t say Shohei already has 377 TB when Bell’s 1995 season was shortened to 144 games. Ohtani has played in more games this season than Bell did. Im really not quite sure why I’ve several people in this thread and Dan P In the clip keep discrediting doubles. The single season record for 2Bs is lower than the the top 7 Home Run seasons. It’s not just this “oh well when you just miss a homer you get a double” you guys keep making it out to be.
@@travisp5747 Belle having only 144 games is a valid point. It's just too bad things turned out that way. It's even worse that he didn't get the MVP. I'm still furious about that. For the doubles argument, I'm not discrediting doubles, I'm evaluating them within the context. Players aim for homers, they don't aim for doubles. Doesn't that explain for why the single season record for 2Bs is lower than the the top 7 Home Run seasons? And for the 50/50 argument, HR & SB require totally opposite skillsets while HR & 2B don't. I'm not saying hitting 2B are easier than SB, it isn't. It just so happens that it's much harder for HR batters to steal bases than to hit doubles. That's my take. And for the total base stuff, I just gave it for the sake of reference to look at when we're looking just at hitting achievements. I just said Ohtani already has 377, which is a fact, nothing more or less. Judge has more, I presume, and Acuna had more last season. I don't think that takes anything away from Shohei's 50/50 because it's a totally different story. But if you're talking about HR & 2B, it does count doesn' it? So, I think we could make an argument comparing Aaron Judge's 2022 season with Belle's 1995 season rather than comparing it to Shohei's 2024. Then we could say Belle would've had more total bases had the season been 162 games and so on. The fact that Ohtani has 377 TB in 153 games would only be relevant to the 50/50 conversation if we considered whether Belle would've stole 44 more bases in his 18 games that was lost to the shortened season. That's how different the two feats are. But, you know, I was a big Albert Belle fan back in the day, and I thank you for bringing his name up. He needs more recognition than he's getting, that's for sure. And as I've already said, I'm still mad about Mo's MVP.
@@clubeyxander5132 not only that, a steal is basically a double if it came from a single, so u could very well chalk up all the 1st to 2nd base steals for Ohtani as 50 doubles
Shawn Green's 6 for 6. 4 HRs, 7RBIs and 19 total bases is still the best "GAME" I've ever seen. SHOTime's game is just coming in a record setting season.
Just a footnote here. 138 steals is a record set by Hugh Nicol in 1887, when runners were credited for a stolen base if they took an extra base on a hit by another player (i.e. if they went from 1st to third on a single). Rickey Henderson stole 130 bases in 1982 WITHOUT that rule. If that rule had been in place in 1982, Rickey might have had 200+ steals.
He's certainly the goat, now I'm ready to see him in the post season. He just "stop hitting him he's already dead"ed the regular season, but I need to see if that translates in October against Philly.
Dan makes the most pertinent point about Belle and doubles: they are just another slugging stat. The reason homeruns and steals are linked is because they showcase different tools in a player's arsenal. To get 50 steals when 50 opportunities are negated by homeruns is mind boggling. For a player to have the speed, awareness, and finesse to steal 50 times is unheard of for a slugger. No one talks about dual slugging milestones, they are essential the same skill.
This was, at the very least, ONE of the best games I've ever witnessed in my lifetime in terms of batting. Up there with Shawn Green's 6-6 night with 4 HRs, 19 total bases, 6 runs & 7 RBIs or Mark Whiten's 4 HR, 12 RBI performance or Josh Hamilton going 5 for 5 with 4 HRs, or Tatis hitting 2 grand slams...IN 1 INNING, and of course Ohtani's double-header with the Angels when he pitched a 1-hit shut-out in the first game and followed that up going 2 for 3 with 2 HRs in the second game.
i saw 48 from the 9th row. i still have this image in my mind of him just absolutely blasting it. it was like a freaking line drive into the upper deck. it looked like he hit a freaking 6 iron.
It was the greatest game I’ve seen since Kerry Wood stuck out 20. That was great. But the Dodgers made the playoffs and that was the deciding game. You can’t write it better than than that.
The greatest day in baseball history is this or the last year, when Shohei did complete shut out in the 1st game of the double header and then hit two homers in the second game in one day.
To me, the closest comp is Wayne Gretzky scoring 5 goals to reach 50 in 39 games. Just like with Shohei, it seemed destined that he was going to reach the milestone, but nobody would have called it that day.
The reason why 50/50 is more impressive with stolen bases rather than doubles is because doubles and home runs are both power numbers. Stolen base equates to speed, so speed and power are two different attributes.
Compare it to Wayne Gretzky scoring 50 goals in 39 games. He was at 35 goals after 34 games, and then went 3-2-1-4-5 in the next five games. FIFTEEN goals in five games to break the 50-in-50 record by 11 games.
This is so different all on its own because the guy hit 50 Home runs by batting those in and at the same time he ran to steal 50 stolen bases to execute that. Two different things altogether to reach that magical 50 number in the same game nonetheless within the same year.
Complete respect for the achievement and the way he did it. I guess my only thing is stolen bases aren’t really that sexy as far as stats go. Again though very impressed and the game definitely is an all timer
Not to mention he’s RECOVERING from Tommy Jones surgery. Let’s put up a stat board comparing him to every player recovering from TJ surgery within 12 months lol
I think Marvin is right the closest comparison is Kobe’s 81 point game. Greatest nba regular season game of all time and ohtani with probably the greatest mlb regular season game of all time.
Josh Hamilton was the only guy that comes close to making that sound when the back connects to the ball He was a monster And I feel like if two-way players were a thing around the turn of the century they might have tried it with him cuz he had a cannon for an arm
Only thing that would have cemented this as the greatest performance of all time, he was a half step away from hitting for the cycle. His second double he got thrown out at third. Imagine if it was 6-for-6, 3 HRs, 10 RBI, 2 SB, 4 R, AND A CYCLE...
Ohtani is the greatest baseball talent in my life. That’s not saying he’s accomplished the most - he’s only played 7 years and he might not play that long since he broke in late. But right now, there’s never been a player who does all that he does.
Ohtani did a perfect game and then some. He reached milestones in stats that no player has ever done in their entire career in 1 day. He created a club that no one will enter for years maybe even decades, certainly wouldn't beat his 54 59 record. And all this to help dodgers secure his first playoff in MLB. You hit a perfect game, made your career, made history, and came in clutch for your team's season. What other dimension could another performance be better?
no way he will be running as much next year…. yes, weve been putting Ohtani in that context where we say “he shouldnt be doing xxx because there is no precedent” well, he has been continuously exceeding out expectations, I now think that Shohei might do it anyway.
I vote that Shohei Ohtani's 50/50 record is more impressive than Albert Belle's HR & Doubles because it covers 3 separate tools, which highlights his versatility. Belle's HR & Doubles, while impressive, displays 2 tools. Founding the 50/50 with arguably the greatest individual performance in a single baseball game helps also.
I think it was Eisen who pointed out that what Ohtani accomplished in a single game, no other hitter has accomplished in an entire career. It's hard to top that.
Rich Eisen said players have gotten 6 or more hits in a game, 10 rbis or more in a game, 3 home runs or more in a game, 2 sb or more in a game. But no one in their career has done all of these and Ohtani did it in one game.
If there was any lead off hitter that can drive in 10 RBI's that would be OHTANI. By the way he missed the "CYCLE" by inches that would've been even crazier and the first at bat was almost his 4th HR. Unanimous MVP! Cy Young next year? What can't he do lol.
Reminded on how Tiger Woods was sureal in his beginning. Gretzky' 50th goal in 39 games, scoring five in the game and Bobby Orr's glorious years. Showtime is certainly up there.
This dude is insane, going through the comments got me thinking his prime averages might actually be 30 hr, 30 steals, 100 rbi and runs, .280 avg, 15 wins, 180ks, 3.5 era
The "greatest game" in baseball history is a highly debated topic, but a few legendary games consistently stand out. One of the most often cited is Game 7 of the 2016 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians. This game had everything: dramatic lead changes, extra innings, a rain delay, and a historic ending. The Cubs won 8-7 in 10 innings, breaking their infamous 108-year championship drought. Other contenders include: Game 6 of the 1975 World Series (Red Sox vs. Reds): Carlton Fisk's iconic walk-off home run in the 12th inning pushed the series to a Game 7. Game 7 of the 1960 World Series (Pirates vs. Yankees): This game ended with Bill Mazeroski’s walk-off home run, the only Game 7 walk-off homer in World Series history. Game 5 of the 1956 World Series (Yankees vs. Dodgers): Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in World Series history. Each of these games has a claim to being the greatest depending on what criteria you value: history, drama, or individual performances.
People keep sayin' he "joined" the 50-50 club. The implication is that there was a 50-50 club waiting for him. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that he created that "club." He set up the clubhouse, picked the furniture and put the pictures on the walls.
They are missing the point. Yes, people have stolen more than 50 bases and people have hit more than 50 homers, BUT to do both in the same season is incredible because most home run hitters can’t run and most runners can’t hit homers. No one else has ever done it in 120+ years of baseball. That would be like someone getting 500 assists and 500 blocks in an NBA season.
Attendance was only 15,548. In a few years, 100,000 are going to say they were there. Imagine having tickets, but deciding to stay home last night. Unless you were going somewhere else to see about a girl, there has to be some regret.
There's a difference between the greatest game in baseball history and the greatest individual performance. 20-4 is maybe the greatest rout in history, but probably not.
34 doubles, 7 triples, twice as many intentional walks as Albert Belle, 1 more HR, and exactly the same number of total bases (377) as of posting. The problem with the doubles statistic is that all triples could also be doubles. That being said, Albert Belle was a beast in '95, he should have had a better legacy.
To put this in perspective, according to Rich Eisen, the stats Shohei put up last night in one game nobody in baseball history has ever done it in an entire career

Absolutely Correct
It's not 3 mvps in 7 seasons. It's 3 mvps in just 4 seasons. That's even crazier.
@@TheBlackWaltzdo not forget that he is the first one who got MVP in both league.
@@ShoOhtakenah I think you need to forget because you’re flat wrong lmao
FYI, he beat it in todays game. He got another HR and another SB.
Judge and Otahni have that sound, which comes from being gigantic studs with incredible bat skills.
I love hearing Dan talk about "the sound". Buck O'Neil used to talk about "the sound" of babe Ruth and josh Gibson's bat. Now there's a 3rd guy.
In his first season
i wonder what his 60/60 game is going to be like next week.
Hahahaha too true
Exactly! But like - what do we expect of this guy? Lol. Now they’re talking about the possibility of him pitching in the post season? I don’t think that’s going to happen.
55-55 very achievable. 60-60 will put a major gap. 😮
do you think 60/60 is achievable? how about 70/70?
How many games do they have left?
It's the combination of power (home run) and speed (stolen bases) which makes HR+SB better than HR+2B
I think that it's because he was reaching for 50/50 and then beat it with this greatest game that makes the difference.
You could argue other performances were more important, but this was the greatest statistical game for an individual player ever.
50 HRs and 20 Wins will be the next club he founds.
I wonder what is more likely, 50 hr and 20 wins or 50 hr and 200 ks. Or... all three!
He's certainly the goat, now I'm ready to see him in the post season. He just "stop hitting him he's already dead"ed the regular season, but I need to see if that translates in October against Philly.
He got 34 HR, 15 wins, 219 Ks in 2022. First ever player to qualify for both hitting and pitching stats.
That would be so insane. And what’s more is that he could actually do it lol
Don't hold your breath.
He almost hit for the cycle too!!! Was very close. 🔥🔥🔥
I seem to remember Rick Wise pitching a no hitter and hitting 2 home runs, never done before or since
This was, at the very least, ONE of the best games I've ever witnessed in my lifetime in terms of batting.
What does he do for an encore? Maybe pitching in the World Series and winning. That would make this season the greatest season of all time.
Randy Johnson's 20k performance is on the list. But great perforce for a hitter is Ohtani performance yesterday
Kerry Wood Striking out 20 on 122 pitches is insane to
@@nate9798 Wood's 20 k game is the most dominant start in baseball history. He was utterly untouchable and he was facing a completely stacked lineup
Maybe the greatest game in SPORTS history. Up there with Wilt, and more statistically meaningful and complete.
Dan you are 💯 absolutely correct
Shohei Ohtani king of baseball ⚾️
Props to Skip Schumaker for that honest answer.
i saw 48 from the 9th row. i still have this image in my mind of him just absolutely blasting it. it was like a freaking line drive into the upper deck. it looked like he hit a freaking 6 iron.
Shohei is the GOAT. It's not a debate.
Exactly one year after elbow surgery
blessed to be there 🥹
The crack of the bat sound is reminiscent of the natural.
Shogun Goatani 🙇🏻♂️
To me, the closest comp is Wayne Gretzky scoring 5 goals to reach 50 in 39 games. Just like with Shohei, it seemed destined that he was going to reach the milestone, but nobody would have called it that day.
Scoring 5 in that game
One of the greatest DHs ever was Edgar Martinez. With a career year in 95 he finished 3rd in the MVP race which was a
crime in my opinion.
He’s the best baseball player I’ve seen with my own eyes. Top 5 athlete I’ve seen
The reason why 50/50 is more impressive with stolen bases rather than doubles is because doubles and home runs are both power numbers. Stolen base equates to speed, so speed and power are two different attributes.
Ohtani already made 700 mil back to the Dodgers. What a GOAT he is.
Yep I still think he is underpaid lol
And the billion has been over the course of ONE season. The 700 million is getting paid in increments.
The only thing I could think of was TIger in the US Open. But, this beats that.
Not to mention he’s RECOVERING from Tommy Jones surgery. Let’s put up a stat board comparing him to every player recovering from TJ surgery within 12 months lol
Let's just hope he doesn't need John Jones surgery next, or worse...Roy Jones, Jr. surgery. Career = over at that point.
Shohei Ohtani is the GOAT...🔥🔥🔥🔥
🐐🐐 Goat Talk
Great talk today Dan !
I think Marvin is right the closest comparison is Kobe’s 81 point game. Greatest nba regular season game of all time and ohtani with probably the greatest mlb regular season game of all time.
Time for Ohtani to start going after records like 57 in a row. Might as well!
60/60 is possible.
@@Kingofthehill84 he gotta stay super hot. i would say he has a 5-10% chance to do it. 9 games left.
Congrats Goatani!!!!!! ⚾
Josh Hamilton was the only guy that comes close to making that sound when the back connects to the ball
He was a monster
And I feel like if two-way players were a thing around the turn of the century they might have tried it with him cuz he had a cannon for an arm
Unbelievable season. When he does pitch again, I'd rather see him as a closer moving forward 50/50/50.
reggie jackson 1977 game 6 world series...........3 pitchers............3 pitchs...............3 homeruns
I'm glad someone mentioned this one.
Shawn Green had a phenomenal game I think four home runs, 19 total bases record, still does not compare to what Otani did😍
Ohtani did a perfect game and then some.
Goat.
I think it was Eisen who pointed out that what Ohtani accomplished in a single game, no other hitter has accomplished in an entire career. It's hard to top that.
I don’t know if it’s the greatest game but it’s gotta be the greatest stat line ever.
Dan, Ohtani didn't "join" the 50/50 club... He CREATED it.
Rich Eisen said players have gotten 6 or more hits in a game, 10 rbis or more in a game, 3 home runs or more in a game, 2 sb or more in a game. But no one in their career has done all of these and Ohtani did it in one game.
Break records on the best game ever played at that is quite unique. Poetry
Other contenders include:
Game 6 of the 1975 World Series (Red Sox vs.
And he missed hitting for the cycle by a hair. He almost made it to 3rd after the 2nd double. Got picked off 1/4 inch off the base.
People keep sayin' he "joined" the 50-50 club. The implication is that there was a 50-50 club waiting for him. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that he created that "club." He set up the clubhouse, picked the furniture and put the pictures on the walls.
MVP !!!! Well deserved !!!!
Not to mention he just guaranteed higher ratings in the playoffs.
It was 2 games, but he did have a day last year with 2 homers in a game, and a complete game shutout in the doubleheader
Attendance was only 15,548. In a few years, 100,000 are going to say they were there. Imagine having tickets, but deciding to stay home last night. Unless you were going somewhere else to see about a girl, there has to be some regret.
It can't get better than a perfect game in a WS, but it can match it.
Brother is the goat.
Let's face it he's the best.
and with 9 or so games left. . 60/60 is a distinct possibility, , wild
$700 million turned out to be a GREAT deal for the LAD!
The crazy part of this is he's rehabilitating from Tommy John surgery. 😮
There's a difference between the greatest game in baseball history and the greatest individual performance. 20-4 is maybe the greatest rout in history, but probably not.
now we gotta see what he does in the post season
We're actually going to SEE HIM in the postseason for the 1st time.
for the record shohei also has 34 doubles
34 doubles, 7 triples, twice as many intentional walks as Albert Belle, 1 more HR, and exactly the same number of total bases (377) as of posting. The problem with the doubles statistic is that all triples could also be doubles. That being said, Albert Belle was a beast in '95, he should have had a better legacy.
To put this in perspective, according to Rich Eisen, the stats Shohei put up last night in one game nobody in baseball history has ever done it in an entire career
