You have not the slightest idea about Warhammer Fantasy! A video game did not keep it alive. It is the thousands of player in 9th age or Warhammer army project and the ones still playing 8th or older versions. Video gamers don't spend thousands on miniatures, it is the table top players.
A lot going on there. Crusades to free Estalia from Araby who had invaded. So many Knights riding South they actually establish the Border Princes at this time. Major clashes with Greenskins I'm sure.
It always baffled me that they didn’t foresee Warhammer Fantasy getting a huge popularity boost from one of the best selling rts franchises of all time. The end times and age of sigmar just seem weirdly timed and like GW didn’t have a finger on the pulse
GW, like many other corporations, absolutely excel at making just the worst decision possible and at having consumers bail them out with their wallets because after decades of plastic slavery they are now a captive audience
WH Old World had so many decades of lore and assets, the Age of Sigmar moderning imho is just such a bad idea to throw that all away... well it's proven because as you say Warhammer made a video game brilliant with it's lore and world building and all the details of various armies for combat. And lo! Based on that a return of Old World. People talk about 3D Printing minis these days I but I think grabbing the digital models themselves and playing WH digitally is probably the future - because fans can just run everything without a corporate mess being made by the company GW... time will tell.

It’s also worth keeping in mind the Vermintide games as well as Total War. People really seemed to latch on to the Ubersreik Five and their adventures against the skaven
The Ubersreik Five makes me hope that the new RPG works to both allow both "died getting stabbed by a beggar" and "died fighting off hordes of goblins and orcs alone" styles of games.

I'm hoping for some of the dark horses of the franchise to shine; Tilea, Estalia, the Border Princes, Albion, and the life. Maybe if we are lucky we'll get to see some untouched Solland lore.
Every Warhammer universe had a ton of factions which would have made amazing armies and stories, but GW forgot that you occasionally need to spend money to make money.
i hope they eventually do a "what if" scenario where the end times dont happen, and they make new models for all the old characters like karl franz, gotrek and felix, grimgor, tyrion and teclis, etc. or at least make new models and let people run them as legends.
Yeah that would be admitting fault. They should but they should just bring the world back. But to me the Warhammer world never was destroyed. I don’t allow canon from companies that I totally disagree with.
The team working on The Old World has already said that Cathay IS going to be introduced in The Old World. It just isn't going to be available at the launch of the game. But the book for it has already been written and the Total War Warhammer III Cathay is based on it.
@@livefromtheblacklibrary i think i started with skaven, or that was my first big force at least. Had to buy plague monks in blister-packs of three metal figs. I also collected some vampire counts but I don't think i ever finished/played with them.
The one thing I've been most curious about is change in technology ...for example are the knights still in full plate or have they regressed to chainmail and are handgunners of various factions going to use longbows and crossbows instead since the setting it going back in time by like 200-300 years? Or will they still have same technology because there ''high middle ages'' lasted way longer than our real world one.
Great video, I've been interested in the Old World lore and I'm only really familiar with some of the Gotrek and Felix stuff, but it doesn't really get into too much of the deeper stuff.

2:07 in fairness to him there are worst names to be given in warhammer. Malus darkblades last name literally translates to bad quality sword in druchii society as Dark meant basically badly made(which is ironic consider they were the dark elves).
Fantasy Battle always had better characters than 40k. Maybe not as deep and fleshed out like the Primarchs but they are certainly more charismatic. I'd pick Gelt, Settra or Saltzpyre over any of the Primarchs any day of the week.
Ikit Claw successfully took Skavenblight for clan Skryre during the 2nd Skaven civil war during this period. Fantasy wasn't really supported and there were far too many old models across facions with some such as the Bretonians being entirely neglected.
I want to get into Warhammer Old World because I love it's lore over whatever AOS is doing and I think it's more immersive and interesting that 40k especially now but I struggle to find motivation to get into Old World because I know how it ends and it sours the experience for me , because I know the world going going to end because of some Merry Sue dickhead and then be replaced with what's basically a 40k reskin. I hope I can get over that fact because I want to see this series do well.

When I played Fantasy it was back in the early to mid 2000s. First came across AoS on a Games Day years ago, GW presenting proudly their new Stormcasts and I wasn't interested at all in fantasy Space Marines. So seeing my childhood return is nice for sure.

This really reinforces my belief that they’re going to go Empire vs Empire in the launch box, just like Age of Darkness (aka HH2). Generic men at arms & cavalry that you can paint up how you like. Two different general minis (great sword vs sword & board). Maybe throw in a steam tank & a dude on a hippogriff.
This was my idea too similar to the Heresy stuff. Just with the reveals focusing on Tomb Kings and Bretonnia I really feel that will be the starter now!
There's no way. A lot of people find the regular humans boring (sad to say as an empire player lol), and there's a reason why every box set so far in the game's history has been two very different races. Empire v orcs, high elves v skaven, dwarfs v goblins
What also pushed GW to put the kibosh on Warhammer Fantasy Battles was that they got the rights to the Lord of the Rings universe and started publishing Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game.
Im pretty sure that Cathay has been confirmed to be in the old world. Also I thought that the old world was referring to "old" as in, before aos, as much as "old world" the continent.
Fantasys equivalent of Erupoe has always been called the Old World by the human and Dwarf factions it just doens't come up too much because so much is set their that differentiating it from cathay, or naggoroth or lustria , etc isn't usually needed.

To complement the not well selling of WFB, the game was 30 years old, there where no real range refresh with upscale minis (unlike primaris or else) so many veteran players didn't need to renew their collections and in general games struggled to seduce new blood because of self concurrence with Lord of the rings who was coming on screens and tabletop.
I hope they keep it mid fantasy in tone and don't try and force AoS style stuff into the old world... but I am in general quite excited. I always wanted to get into warhammer fantasy but never did.
I really, really want to get invested into Warhammer Fantasy lore (hell, even Age of Sigmar I would love to get into), specially because I'm more of a Fantasy fan than a Sci-Fi one (despite still enjoying Warhammer 40K). But I couldn't find any good introductory video to the lore of the setting, only videos that talked about big events and battles of the lore, but with no proper context (if anyone reading the comments see this, please share here, I would gladly check it out). I hope that, with the release of The Old World and people getting interested in learning more about the setting (from beginning, middle and end), this could incentivize people into introducing the setting to newbies, like me.
I'm a bit unsure about this. Cool moment of history, but I just think it is a huge mistake to not lean into the success of the Total War game, especially when it's bringing new people in. Gonna be disappointing for a few to get in with Total war and find out the lord or faction they liked isn't there.

Hatred makes people say dumb things huh? AOS has a ton of factions that bear no ressemblance to space marines. Ioneth Deepkin, Gargants, the flesheater courts, none of these even have a 40k equivalent.
WHF being saved by Total War is exaggeration Yes you may feel like it, looking from your direction, but RPG was being developed constantly. If you want to play the game competetively, by tournament rules you need to use GW figures, so no knockoffs, no 3D printing. Not to mention that 8th edition brought canonical end to the setting, which only made players upset (because it genuinely sucked - so no wonder they did not buy figures. Infact - GW wanted to end WHF WAAAAY earlier. Huge event in which people could personally participate was released, and campaign was booted, to clash good with evil. Archaon took his hordes and raided south, but ... problem was that Empire got adventage. Submitted battle outcomes (people played in stores, and submitted wins and loses contributed to the final outcome) made law and order thrive and GW could not destroy the Empire the way they wanted. Second edition of WFRP campaign begins in Middenheim devastated by invasion. Hope you'll research the matter and release some new, better version with correct informations because many many things are misinterpreted.

Greed and bad rules finished 8th edition really saying fantasy wasn't selling enough is a joke not just because the sheer volume of models needed but all the army books for each faction even if you never got the faction you got their book so you could read up on their rules! Forcing Hordes onto newer players would no doubt have chased of many would be players also 1 regiment of 50-100 models was essential to be able to even stand your ground in a battle! I'm not sure how many 8th players will come back after how GW did some amazing characters dirty (cough...tyrion.. cough) I'm wanting to give it a go but the clear lack of support from GW has me cautious with my and my kids warchest time and reviews will tell I guess!

Age of sigmar models so unique? They are literally space marines. The models are crap.
Hatred makes people say dumb things huh? AOS has a ton of factions that bear no ressemblance to space marines. Ioneth Deepkin, Gargants, the flesheater courts, none of these even have a 40k equivalent.

Yes you may feel like it, looking from your direction, but RPG was being developed constantly.
If you want to play the game competetively, by tournament rules you need to use GW figures, so no knockoffs, no 3D printing.
Not to mention that 8th edition brought canonical end to the setting, which only made players upset (because it genuinely sucked - so no wonder they did not buy figures.
Infact - GW wanted to end WHF WAAAAY earlier. Huge event in which people could personally participate was released, and campaign was booted, to clash good with evil. Archaon took his hordes and raided south, but ... problem was that Empire got adventage. Submitted battle outcomes (people played in stores, and submitted wins and loses contributed to the final outcome) made law and order thrive and GW could not destroy the Empire the way they wanted.
Second edition of WFRP campaign begins in Middenheim devastated by invasion.
Hope you'll research the matter and release some new, better version with correct informations because many many things are misinterpreted.
