This song is definitely one of my favorites off the album. Such a great song overall, but Paul also sings it perfectly and the lyrics are great.

For me this song, along with Distractions, is the absolute peak of this record.
What a top notch composition by Paul and Elvis, and what a great soulful delivery by Paul.
I've always been puzzled by the sound underneath Paul's voice at the very beginning (I believe they are effected guitars or a weird mix of guitars and keys), I thought you guys would point that out as well.
One of the most noticeable things in this track is that it features none other than the late great Nicky Hopkins on piano.
The session man extraordinaire, whose work spans so many legendary songs by almost all the major rock artists, finally appears with this song on an officially released Paul McCartney song, making him one of only THREE people in the world who can (Or who could, god bless his sweet soul) claim to have worked on officially released records by all four ex-Beatles as well as with the Beatles as a band: Having played electric piano on the band's Revolution in 1968, as well as extensively with both John Lennon (Jealous Guy being one of his many trademark piano lines), George Harrison (Give Me Love [Give Me Peace On Earth] being another massive contribution) and Ringo Starr (e.g. Photograph) in the 70s.
The only other two persons who can (Still) claim to have recorded with The Beatles as well as with all four separate former Beatles are Eric Clapton and, obviously, Ringo Starr

      harmonium?
Paul recorded with Klaus. Does that count? Or does it have to be Klaus recording with him? They also worked together on a Carly Simon song. Oh, wait, Klaus didn't record WITH the Beatles.

Such a pity that Paul never performed this song live (Even if I seem to remember to have read somewhere that this song was considered for inclusion in the 1989/1990 World Tour setlists. It eventually just ended being played as background music during the pre-show build up), but on the other end Elvis Costello has performed this song frequently since right after writing it with Paul in 1987, even before its release.
Probably its most poignant performance has been in 1999 for The Concert For Linda, a benefit show held up in Linda's memory a year after her passing.
Here Elvis, backed only by his long time fantastic pianist Steve Nieve, gives a breathtaking and so deep, given the circumstances, performance of the song.
    Here's the video of it:
    ruclips.net/video/hpmpzhZihM8/видео.htmlsi=npUCCuMu1MAXeeXl
(Also performed that night by Elvis was a gorgeous rendition of Paul's Warm And Beautiful.
The two also duetted on All My Loving)

Thank you Uetti for providing the link. The guys thought they couldn't really here Elvis in the song (assuming they meant as an influence) but I feel his presence in the composition quite srongly.
On The Paul McCartney Project webpage Elvis is quoted saying, 'The last song we wrote was That Day Is Done. Again, I had a fair opening statement of it and had all these images. It was from a real thing. It was about my grandmother’s funeral. It was sort of serious...., the single moment of real tension between us (he and Paul) came when we were cutting the track for “That Day Is Done,” but, then, it was a song about which I was almost too possessive. It was the unhappy sequel to “Veronica”.
I think that is reallyn interesting that both songs Veronica and TDID were both written pretty much at the same time and both dealing with Elvis' love and forthcoming loss oh nis nan he clealry adored.
Speaking of adulation, I adore this song and rate it very highly. Another example of Paul pulling out another genre and making it look so easy and natural as if part of his DNA. A secular gospel tinged song with great lyrics and Paul agains delivers a great vocal.

A gorgeous song sung from the perspective of a man at his own funeral. Paired with Shallow Grave, you have to wonder what kind of mood they were in during these writing sessions.

Paul wanted to write a New Orleans style kind of song, He and Declan knocked it right out of the park with That Day Is Done. This is the only time in his career that the albums title is from a lyric in a song “She sprinkles flowers in the dirt”.
Paul McCartney in “Club Sandwich 52, Summer 1989“:
We kept the piano (Nicky Hopkins) and vocal and added some Hovis brass to give it a silver band/New Orleans marching band feel…I said to Elvis, ‘Oh yeah, I get it, New Orleans funeral music. House is finished, right?’ It’s turned out a nice track set against everything else on the album.”
Paul plays a Wal 5 Customized Bass, gifted to him by Linda

Here's my stab at it: Giorgio McJames (CPO) and Rusty O'Boogie (Cory)
Or you could steal George Harrison's session pseudonym: L'Angelo Mysterioso
Paul was really into bright patterned shirts with vests around this time. And, of course, he still had his mullet.

Elvis was a little upset Paull took most of the good songs for this album. Basically, Paul did not ask. But you can see Elvis do this song on Letterman. His way. Hey, Paul, did team up for the Veronica song. Elvis biggest hit. Another collab out there is Pads, Paws and Claws. Elvis did say Paul was his favorite Beatle too, so they are still cool.

Loved it when Paul sings, "She sprinkles flowers in the dirt" you both look at each other with a "aaah, that's where the title comes from". I've always liked this song. Kind of like a gospel funeral procession song. Should have ended the album. Would've put the album nicely to bed. The lyrics speaks for itself. That day is done,....this album in at the end. And yes, this song is somewhat similar to the song "Call me Back again,. Good call. I think that song also should have ended either side 1 or side 2 of Venus and Mars.

Like the previous song, the gospel elements stand out here. The music is outstanding. The weakness is that the lyrics, although darkly suggestive, don't have the emotional resonance of the music. This song needs lyrics like "Let It Be" to deliver the punch the music could carry.

You both seem like actual gentlemen, and I am going to maintain that assumption. Why? Because when people say they like to cause offense, it resembles those who say they are upfront, and you'll know if they ae unhappy with you. It is an excuse for potential rudeness and aggressive behaviour, and I do not accept either excuse. We already have enough anger and hatred in this world I see it every day as do thousands. We need greater patience, resilience and consideration in society not offensive and abusive manners or behaviours. Sorry but this point is important to me.
