I didn’t care too much about Wings in their day mainly because I was in mourning over the breakup of the Beatles. But I have a newfound respect for the band. My greatest respect goes to Paul McCartney, who could pull it off successfully with two groups, despite that Wings changed their lineup a few times.

    Nice, Andrew.
I went to my local record store (in Inverness) last Monday to buy the CD and, to my pleasant surprise, the sales dude (who is literally named after Paul because Macca was mum's favourite Beatle) told me that the album had sold out on the day the shop received it. We had a nice chat about Beatley stuff and he took my phone number so that he can call me as soon as they get in a new delivery.

One Hand Clapping's always had this mysterious feel to it since we've only ever been drip-fed bits and pieces of it over the years, so it's nice to have a polished up official release now. I really like these performances, the more upbeat tracks in particular are incredibly energetic.

Never had the chance to get my hands on bootlegs, which is probably for the best. The sound on Apple music is fantastic with Dolby Atmos. Will definitely get my hands on the vinyl. After years of listening to all these tracks on bootlegs, it was a treat listening to One Hand Clapping on streaming for the first time in such great quality! One thing I would’ve suggested if they could have included video on a DVD from the TV performance and of course backyard performance at Abbey Road. That would’ve been a real treat.
As always, thanks for another informative video Andrew!

Fine work, Andrew! An unboxing/history lesson/review, all rolled up into one! This release was a dream come true for me and it did not disappoint! I would easily rank this in my top 10. The mix is stellar (both stereo & particularly Dolby Atmos) and one of my last Macca "grails" was achieved with a version of Blue Moon Of Kentucky that is not sourced from a scratchy acetate. Minor "grail" achievement goes to Baby Face without the overdubbed narrative. Quick shout out goes to Geoff Britton. He may not have been a "clever" drummer like Joe English, but from a sheer power standpoint, he was a force of nature!

Yes on Geoff Britton. He brings punk attitude, energy and style and this iteration of Wings, you have to say, looks consequently as if it's from 1976.
Paradoxically, by 76,on Wings Over America, sans Britton, they will look retro, very Zep 74 🤔🇺🇸

  • @silverinkpot7

Thanks for another well researched video, with fascinating detail. This period was one of Paul's most creatively fertile. I haven't bought the One Hand Clapping yet. To me it's most interesting as the inspiration of what would result in the most exciting three record live album of the seventies, Wings Over America, and a culmination of Paul's effort to find artistic achievement rivaling the Beatles. My only disappointment was that Wings Over America couldn't have included songs from Ram or Wild Life (i.e. Back Seat of My Car, Uncle Albert Admiral Halsey, Tomorrow, Dear Friend). The biggest omission from Wings Over America was, of course, Let It Be. Interesting that Paul was rehearsing it but then cut it from the playlist for the tour. P. S. I wish Denny Laine could have seen this.

Nowadays there is far too much conversation and comment about Paul’s voice and the effect age has had.
It would be far more sensible for us to all reflect on how good Paul’s voice was at its peak.
At this time in his life he was an excellent vocalist and this LP shows that he was in total command of his performances and had the versatility which many top level singers wish they had. Listening to these performances it’s quite stunning how easy he makes it seem.
It’s about time this was released and given the attention that it deserves.
Very nice review as always! Great work.

"the sound of one hand clapping" is a famous Zen koan, a type of riddle or paradoxical statement used in Zen Buddhism to provoke deep thought and challenge conventional thinking. This particular koan originates from the teachings of the Japanese Zen master Hakuin Ekaku. The purpose of such koans is to transcend logical reasoning and prompt a meditative state, encouraging practitioners to experience a direct insight into the nature of reality.

Band on the Run was the best post Beatles solo album by any of the four former Beatles. It may be one of Paul's only complete albums (the follow up Venus and Mars is the other), as most have one or two stand out tracks and less than stellar tracks (some are downright filler).

I took a little time to warm to this album, especially side one. But I now really love it. Sadly, my vinyl copy is very noisy especially between track. I think that this will be rectified when I put the discs through an antistatic liquid bath. It really is timevthat vinyl manufacturers attended to their quality control.

What's up with this documentary film, is it lost? The thing is on RUclips but looks like the sessions were filmed on tape, transferred to film then the film was bootlegged to video. The official video for Soily has a very poor image probably being sourced from the bootleg itself.

I agree with your statement about content being more important than quality...
I really appreciate the bootleg...I heard "wonceuponatime", once you have the artist's library, what's next?

Is it officially called "Paul MCartney & Wings"?
I mentally view that while run as Paul's solo work since some of those in wings played on RAM and/or McCartney 1 I forget.

I think the triple live album “Wings Over America” is Paul’s best album. Great songs that sound better live, such as Maybe I’m Amazed and Let Me Roll It. Change my mind.

Completely agree. Great band and the set covers the majority of the best of the post Beatles songs, along with a few Beatles treats.

@@charlesbronson4282 Agreed, although I wouldn't say by far. I still need to give London Town and Back to the Egg a listen, but my Wings album rankings are (including Paul's first two solo albums):
      Ram
      Band on the Run
      Wings Over America
      Venus and Mars
      McCartney
      Wild Life
Wings at the Speed of Sound
      Red Rose Speedway
It's incredible that was his output 1970-1976. Paul McCartney is a force of nature.

It is amazing how Denny was so naive then about the biz he was in. It wasn't long after those comments when Patrick Moraz sued The Moody's for breach of contract. Oh, the irony!
    Paul was right....again.
I've seen video of the farm and the people and it all seemed so tranquil there. It is out in the boonies, fer sure. Not much to do but lays about.

Finally a release thats worth listening to!!! I love it...sure..crappy low effort art work.,but the music is great..and I have listened over and over...as far as the Mind Games release, I have long since had that LP..CD.ect...and unless John has come back to life and recorded new versions..I will stick with what HE released . the remixed releases to my ears are always over done and I prefer the original...Sgt Pepper, Band on the Run, Red Rose Speedway..bought all three remixes...preferred originals....Love your review Andrew!.you nailed it...One Hand Clapping is great and a must have,

I'll have to check this out eventually. I don't know how much of this material ended up being played at concerts, but I do know that this has to be better than the bootlegs (or even audience tapes of the shows this material might have been played at). Paul McCartney is a HUGE star, and needed to be a bit selective of just "how" and "who" he performed with...and for how long. Let's face it, he's captain of his ship!! You mentioned the WINGS OVER AMERICA tour, and that proves the point about how Paul has to be "picky," and/or the final voice when it comes to alll the decidion making. To me, the WINGS OVER AMERICA album has always sounded bad, from a sound-engineering standpoint. But, if Paul didn't put something "official" from that tour, the bootleggers would. So, very good on Paul, and for us, that he's putting this out now.
