It's our first Christmas in our new house!! Somehow having a house of our own made me SO EXCITED to decorate this year, and get a whole, big Christmas tree!! I want to avoid accumulating a million boxes of Christmas decorations so I tried to limit things and also DIY what we could with materials that can be repurposed or also used at other times of the year.
Surprisingly, our cats haven't bothered the decorations hardly at all!

Now that we have a whole house we finally have space for a big Christmas tree!!!! We've been together for 12 years and this is our first regular-size Christmas tree together. wowww

It's interesting how easily they got those American-style things in Japan. I'm wondering whether that style is popular in Japan due to American influence, or if Rachel went out of her way to find those.
@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 Most of the process of designing the house is captured on their channel. They were extremely selective and patient to work around the limited availability of certain things. Some stuff was made bespoke, like the counter.

So I think although it may not be commonly found in stores like how America has WHOLE AISLES top to bottom stocked with Xmas decor, there's still some Xmas decor in Japanese stores. So maybe she went out of her way a little, especially if she was looking for something specific. But I don't think she had to go do like online shopping for everything or something

I love how Pichi is so comfortable now that she doesn't budge despite all the craziness! She's come so far from the little girl who wouldn't let anyone touch her ❤️
She actually has come far, before she was antisocial and would run in response, poor little girl learned to avoid humans because of people trying to catch her in the past traumatizing her, most likely because they wanted to help.

@@BeaverBall7 well whether you think building trust for things you're scared of is progress and part of the healing process, cause responding negatively to stimuli is not only dependant on pain, it can be based on previous bad experiences or just instinctual fear as well and learning to get past them is progress for a cat.
like if you hated yourself and then over a year you hated yourself less or you actively worked on a phobia you had and improved your reaction to it does that not count as progress??

@@thlayliroo Exactly. It's a ways short of crazy. Plus it seems like the entry/dining/living room is the only place decorated. My guess is her parents and grandparents were the type to do every room in the house, the hallways, and the yard loll
Compared to how much my parents do, this is nothing. We have boxes and boxes of decorations for the entire house.

Wow I really love your new house, you both have excellent taste, that just needs to be said. I really really like how It's a mix of both Japanese and American style, so cool. I also love, love love that It's such a cat paradise. Your cats are so unbelievably lucky to have you two as parents, they obviously adore the both of you, I can't wait for the video (I'm really hoping there will be one) where you show all the cool cat stuff you designed in your new house especially for your furbabies. I think It's so amazing to see people loving animals so much.
I wanna end on a sad note though, just for a bit. I just lost my mom a week ago, very suddenly, it was so sudden and such a shock that I have a hard time believing this happened. My parents have been married 53 years so my dad is understandably very sad. Christmas was always our favourite time of year as a family. I mean my mom's funeral is in a few days, kinda hard to get in the mindset of Christmas so I try to avoid it. Although I have been actively avoiding everything Christmas related, I honestly was so excited when I watched your new video - crying of course but that's ok. But your video made me happy for a few minutes, so thank you for that. I always love seeing what you guys are up to and your cats are my favourite cats of all the cats I follow on various social media outlets.
Wowww that was the longest comment I've ever done, I'm not a big commenter though. Something just came over me and I had no control of the feelings pouring out, I'm sorry if this was inappropriate or something, that was not my goal.
But if anyone reads this, my point by sharing all that was to remind people to show love for the people you love and care about, while you still have time. You never know what can happen tomorrow.

Yeah it’s been really tough going through this, you’re right it hasn’t settled in yet. My mom’s funeral is on monday, I’m guessing things will get more real after that. I feel like I’m in a nightmare.

Sending you so much love and warm hugs. My dad died this year and this will be my first birthday (in a few days) and Christmas without him. The shock and immense pain will fade with time but they will always be close to your thoughts and I hope the love and good memories will be what you hold on to. Today I made a custom christmas ornament from Macorner that you can have all the family sitting together, and I made one with my Dad in the middle and all of us around him so at least on our tree he will be there. I hope you find ways to include your Mom and ease your pain, sending best holiday wishes to all of you.
Me too, lost my mom so suddenly this year. I believe she's in a hurry to be reborn as her grandson, my nephew, who actually is born on her birthday, a couple of months after her crossing over. Sounds wacky, I know. Just my coping mechanism, I guess. Happy holiday everyone, blessed be! 🙏🏽

It's been a rough few months and Christmas time this year is exausting and sad, but seeing Rachel being all happy and excited about decorations and the cats sleeping under the lights really warms my cold dead heart. Thank you for uploading.

I love how Rachel is the handyman, crafter, and direct one and Jun is the cook, detail-oriented, and less direct one. I feel like you both are super intelligent individuals and I love how many stereotypes you both always break.
Im a longtime fan okay so they live in Japan which is very crowded and housing is expensive. I have seen them from their small apartment where Jun has to duck to get to the kitchen from the genkan, and Rachel sitting on the floor while editing, to their bigger apartment which was so wonderful and now to a a CUSTOM MADE TWO STORY HOUSE, with a HUGE garden. This is so rare! They bought the land ofc but i cant imagine how expensive all this is? Im so happy for them! Time really flies!

Haku running to lay under the Christmas tree as soon as the tree skirt was put down reminded me so much of my cat, who'd do the same thing , and she was a ginger cat too. It's been a few years since she passed, but all the shoots of the cats laying under the tree brought back such good memories. Thank you!

Just as we saw Haku settling down to enjoy a nap under the tree, I laughed and then looked at my own (rather smaller) tree, only to see my Mr. Gray (a Russian Blue cat) napped out under it. So, in the USA or in Japan, cats are alike evrywhere! 🙂

@@vogelvrouw I don't think it's a myth, lol. Chris (Abroad in Japan) did a video actually showing how you can reserve a large roasted chicken for Christmas and another year, I think he wanted one but they were sold out.
It is a kind of an "alternative" tradition in America to eat Chinese food on Christmas. Also coming from near NYC, a lot of people do this especially people of Jewish background and others who don't believe in celebrating Christmas. I'm not sure about Japanese food but I bet some stores are open.

In the movie A Christmas Story the home cooked turkey dinner gets ruined but Dad saves the day by taking them all out for Peking Duck as all other restaurants are closed. Not sure if this reflects the tradition or caused it in the first place.

Our tree decoration rule was to get small bells and felt/knitted/cloth or wooden ornaments and put those on the lower level of the tree for the cats to play with and all the delicate and/or breakable ornaments at least half the way up the tree and to the top so they were out of reach of the cats. Cats are going to play with the dangly things, so this kept things much safer for them and for us. Your decorations are very lovely!!
Idk if this is weird, but I like to put on your videos while I'm cooking/cleaning. It's a nice ambiance! Tonight I just made fried eggs and toast

Having grown up with several cats, I can tell you that a great way to keep the cats from tipping your Christmas tree over is to tie a string from the tree to a hook on the wall.
The string doesn't have to be strong enough to support the whole tree, the point is just to keep the tree from tipping to an angle where gravity will pull it the rest of the way down.
I haven't seen them in quite a while, but when I was younger you could get tree ornaments which were suspended not with string but with a plastic spiral. You would twist the spiral around a branch of the tree, an if someone like a small child or a playful cat pulled on the ornament, it would easily slip off the branch _without_ taking the whole tree with it.
If you happen to have antique heirloom ornaments made from glass, _do not_ hang them in the tree. My parents had to re-learn this lesson every year, for some reason.
Only use plastic ornaments. These will double as cat toys once the cats pull them off the tree, which makes everybody happy.
I'm sure Rachel & Jun already know this, but I wanted to drop this comment anyway in case it's helpful to anyone else who lives with cats... or small children, for that matter.

That's the same tree we bought last year! (And my fluffy orange girl loves xmas tree. We call it her buddy. She sleeps under it the while season.)
