Shiny objects scare birds when sun reflects off it. Like, it's recommended to put shiny objects (foil for example) on trees to protect berries and fruits. So maybe you should paint the coin roof to make it less shiny?
I read a really interesting book called Fuzz about human tensions with animals, and it said that studies suggest that passive deterrents (things like foil, scarecrows, fake owls, etc) don't work to keep birds away over time - I think it slows down birds from approaching at first, but they get used to it quickly (like in less than a week) and then ignore it. If she doesn't have any bird interest in a couple weeks, she might try covering the roof with something and seeing if it improves, but I don't think it will keep away birds for too long.
Hi Rachel and Jun, For the bird feeder I would recommend make some hols into the bottom part. So if there remains some rain, the food won´t stay wett. Maybe you already have them and I just did not see them ;) I hope for your bird feeder to attract many little friends. I also have one on my balcony. It is beautiful to watch. ♥♥♥
Pro Tip: Next time You want to drill a big hole into a plank of wood. Put it ontop of another piece of wood flat. Clamp it together and while drilling down, make sure the cut goes through the 1st wood, but not the 2nd. Going to make sure the bottom of Your wood piece doesn't get shredded.
Rachel you're awesome! Such a good and creative builder of things. If I can make a suggestion: please wear solid shoes or boots, preferably steel toe when working the saw! You never know with power tools and you don't want to injury your feet!
The brochure that comes with @ Sakura box i's well photographed/written/printed. Not only does it describe the snacks, it gives cultural context and travel tips. Thanks Rachel & Jun.
Aww and the little sparrow is super young too! At 15:27 you can see its derpy little still yellow beak being open. I get you little guy. Eating seeds is hard!
One thing most don't know is that you can put pepper flakes in the birdseed, it'd discourage unwanted animals from eating it. As birds can't taste spice.
I wish Rachel could see this giant country house that I pass by when I travel sometimes because this house has like 20 or more GIANT immaculate bird mansions? Castles? Omg. They are amazing. I think one of them is a replica of the Canadian Parliament building. It's insane how cute they all are set up around the property.
My brother and I had to dig in the summer heat lately as well, but in the Netherlands. It was doable. RIP our 14 year old cat. Instead of sleeping on top of his catnip, he can now forever sleep under it We're quite sad, but we know our cat lived his life to the fullest and there was no saving him in the end. He had pills twice a day for his heart like 5 years. He was able to run around, catch mice and do whatever up until his last week. We don't know what the exact reason was, but he was old and behaved sick all of a sudden, like he occasionally did before, but it was serious this time, though at least he didn't suffer too long. May your cats all have good lives while they're around as well
I miss cicadas so much. Heard them all throughout my childhood until I moved where I am now. They're loud and obnoxious, but they're the sound of summer to me.
I agree! It is exactly my memory and it is something rare now. Precious as seeing dragonflies. I would be heartbroken without either. I do hear some recently.🇨🇦🙋🐈🥰🤗

The voiceover at the ending was very funny, Rachel! I’m sure it will all pan out, eventually, and you will have birds enjoying your beautiful feeder. Great job to Jun for digging the hole, in that racket from the cicadas, to put the feeder and pole into.
as a long term viewer of this channels it’s been really great seeing your projects get bigger and better even if you don’t always think they’re winners they’re definitely progress and inspiring!
As someone who likes the feeling of biting stuff, wood has this sorta satisfying bite to it (soft woods) and is very stimulating, I find it helps me focus extra energy. Also I kinda like the taste, do I have a problem...maybe.
Sounds like Pica if you actually eat the wood, if you don't eat it could be an anxiety disorder. But that's my opinion, I'd suggest seeing a Doctor. Be careful of splinters XD
I mean I can fully understand that. different textures leads to different sensory reactions, and if you’re biting it you’re probably looking for that specific reaction. eating wood though would definitely count as pica I think (like the other comments have pointed out). you might want to look into types of chew toys maybe?
don't worry Rachel, some birds - like sparrows - prefer to eat right of the ground, in open arreas, while other birds prefer to eat higher up! you can experiment with where you put the tree and different hights
Kitties so smart and curious! You know, Rachel, there's a dandy power tool that makes sawing perfect circles! I have great memories of my dad using his hand-held circular saw (like you have) like an artist on so many jobs: decks, kitchen and bathroom remodeling, even stairs! Yup, I have one too!
I'll never stop being amazed at how adept you guys are at DIYing things you want to put in and outside of your house. You're so handy, and your projects usually end up being so cute!
Yay! Real power tools! So happy for your family and your new home. Watching you cut that wood so easily instead of hand sawing was very satisfying after many projects full of struggle and injury lol. Great video!
Rachel, you are so sweet. My mom actually realized birds LOVE when feed is placed on the ground since it mimics natural feeding and foraging ! Adorable bird feeder house, I love the coin roof,,, I wish my house looked that good

Hi! at 5:12 the ground cover: phyla nodiflora You don't need to prepare the ground at all, it will grow anywhere. even in gravel. just replant it in the yard and it will take over everything, no need to do anything really. Good luck removing it from that area completely. The roots can be quite tangled and dense. It is a very tenacious plant. I live in Australia. I have two cats. I also have a Haku, but he is white (named after Haku from spirited away). He is a smol boy but a muscular outside boy. And Tibs, she's a white grey tabby tortoise shell. shes massive. All fat and fur. They are both 7. Indoor/outdoor cats. we can't stop them. I really do love watching all your adventures. :)
1. Wood is just a thicc stick so of course Haku loves it. 2. Without seeing the full progress, it looks like some compensation for the piece with the hole was missed. 3. Of course mukade bites hurts, THEY'RE VENOMOUS! 4. CICADAS
Slightly addicted to those Sakuraco boxes. Always love every single thing in there (so far) I've even learnt to love tea again. ^^ Always good to see garden progress, the bird feeder is very pretty and such a cute lizard Jun spotted! 😄 Omg Poki's dramatic meow 2:45 Such a cute voice.
Just a tip, there are saw drill bits you can use to make big circles, you can get them if you ever need to do something like this in future it would be much easier.. But whatever it arguably doesn't need to be a circle to begin with if there would be a tube used in the end, I would just make square. Also to make fitting of any part easier those triangles as example, draw them before cutting a millimeter bigger then you think they should be, that way you would never ended up with smaller part and anything excessive you can just sand off.
It took a less than a week for birds to find the feeder I put out in my patio garden due to the large amount of activity already there. Very cute bird feeder! Rachel should offer a diy channel to teach us things :D
When Rachel was like, 'This is the difference in the volume of the cicadas with the door open and closed', I was just like, "Ah yes, the sound of summer" and paused the video for a second to listen to the cicadas screaming about it outside my own house. x3
Rachel displays her inner dad mode by getting a rotary saw as a birthday gift lmao the feeder came out really cute btw! Hope the coins don't get too hot when it's sunny out!
2:36 - Oh man, that's an image of frustration! Glad you guys were able to make it in the end! If you think you'll do more projects like this, I recommend picking up a hole saw. (Basically a metal cylinder with teeth, powered by your drill.) They're pretty nice for one-off things like this. Otherwise, use a larger drill bit to create relief holes on the circumference of the circle then use your smaller saw to cut between each
The sparrow's response to the shiny bird feeder is interesting- I have been trying to keep them away from my bird feeder (invasive in my area) and apparently shiny stuff scares them but not other birds, so I hung old CDs around mine
I started watching this video last night while I was falling asleep and I was so confused as to why you were making a bird bath out of wood, now I'm rewatching and DUH! Bird feeder...
Rachel: *makes a bird feeder from scratch* Me: *puts a plate of seeds on the grass and call it a day* (the sparrows, magpies, doves and mynas love it tho😂😂😂 they visit everyday for a free snack/meal owo)
"Don't show my poor craftsmanship!" No Rachel, I love your DIY projects and am astounded each time you create something new!! I have 0 skill and creativity, so anything you create is amazing to me
I had a bird feeder on my window sill but no birb actually used it. Once I spilled some seeds under it on the window sill and birds actually came. So now I put a tray there and put some seeds on the tray and watch birds. In summer a bird bath is also great!
our last bird feeder took over a month until some birds found and used it. it is interesting to see which ones use it, so you can put in the matching birdfood
The feeder looks really cool! And I like Rachel's wavy hair in this video. I wonder if Rachel and Jun will do any travel vlogging this year as covid restrictions lessen? Of course, they also have a dream house now.
I absolutely love all the prep and all the protection gear. Safety and cleanliness (after) are the only way to go! Rachel and Jun 100% inspirational. Bless! ❤️
One of my favorite parts of your videos is the sponsored snack time. You always look genuinely enjoying the snacks while being a bit lovey dovey, with the cats hanging around wanting a taste too, plus a bit of interesting trivia here and there. Very wholesome.
I really want to move to Japan. There are a lot of scary things and complications involved but mukade are legitimately my biggest fear about the entire process
I was curious about the tube, bc it seemed sticky. Now that it's almost a week later, does the feed seem to stick to it? Id recommend putting some perches on the edges, so a little rod that is slightly lower than the food floor. You can also put some sort of greenery on the roof, so the shiny doesn't scare them away. If I'm not mistaken, reflective surfaces scare them off. It's how we kept them from eating out caterpillars when we grew fennel for a 'pillar nursery
Do not worry too much about the birds not going for the feeder and rather for the food that fell on the ground! We have multiple bird feeders in our backyard in Texas and all the birds and squirrels constantly go for the fallen food. If you're really interested in attracting the birds to a particular spot might I suggest a bird bath or shallow pot/planter from a home store to use as a bird bath? This can and does help in increasing bird traffic.
Must ask. Will Rachel and Jun be doing a playthrough of the game Stray, and uploading that playthrough to youtube? Would love to see them do a playthrough of Stray. It would be fun seing their cats react to their playthrough as well, since the game features a cat as the main character, and you have a meow button.
You just said the right thing at the end of your video there are enough insects in the summer time no bird feeding needed! There was a case in December off last year where a lot of finches died by eating at bird feeders and they concluded that each specie of birds have different parasites and other contaminants and make each other sick!
I love that ending and that when spiders are an option on the list, we all always say, "probably spiders" 😂 Never fails that the thing that's the creepiest is the result we get with nature.
Poki once again displays that he is a "brother from another mother-cat" for my cat Loki, because they both are super food motivated and are Immovable Objects when they are trying to get the food. XD

Maybe you've got a little shelf or a frame that you could paint a different color, maybe decorate a small box with paint or fabric to keep special things in. It's fun to customize things for your own needs & your own taste. Start small & enjoy the process!
@@ozkey1558 One thing I love about Rachel is that she keeps all the struggles and mess-ups in the videos. Makes me feel better when I'm staring at my hook rack, wondering how they're somehow STILL CROOKED. 😂 I never knew anyone growing up who did DIY stuff, I learned it all from the Internet, and often I'm watching very experienced carpenters who have learned how not to make those mistakes anymore. It's nice to see that the mistakes (and having to run back to get a new piece or tool) is normal while learning.
@@ILuvAyeAye true! Like when she was refurbishing the cat tower and it dragged out to ten days! 😂 I think a lot of beginners can get discouraged if they compare their own concepts to the polished works they see from more experienced people in their finished form. Watching Rachel laughing through the challenges is very encouraging! 💖
Hi Rachel and Jun,
For the bird feeder I would recommend make some hols into the bottom part. So if there remains some rain, the food won´t stay wett. Maybe you already have them and I just did not see them ;)
I hope for your bird feeder to attract many little friends.
Going to make sure the bottom of Your wood piece doesn't get shredded.
painters tape also works!
@@NMS409I'm gonna have to try that painters tape trick!
Rachel you're awesome! Such a good and creative builder of things. If I can make a suggestion: please wear solid shoes or boots, preferably steel toe when working the saw! You never know with power tools and you don't want to injury your feet!
I'm impressed with how well the sound is stopped by the door being closed. That's a lot of sound. I'd hate it lol
I feel like Rachel should really get a dedicated workshop room or shed in the garden for christmas!
Rachel and Jun's backyard is like animal heaven (:
My brother and I had to dig in the summer heat lately as well, but in the Netherlands. It was doable. RIP our 14 year old cat. Instead of sleeping on top of his catnip, he can now forever sleep under it
We're quite sad, but we know our cat lived his life to the fullest and there was no saving him in the end. May your cats all have good lives while they're around as well
One of these days, Poki will just have his own food sponsors and advertisements lol
Bird water fountain would definitely interest them! And watching them bathe is super cute :)
I do hear some recently.🇨🇦🙋🐈🥰🤗
the coin shingle idea was so cute!!
words can't describe how much joy this channel gives me. thank you for always remembering us and giving us the privilege of learning about your lives and home 🤍
Jun: kitties we have to use this room.
Haku (in dramatic pose): Why must you make us soooo miserable?!
It sounds a bit like Pica (no judgment, just sharing the info in case you wanted to look into it).
Oh, check out the movie 'Swallow' from 2019. Not porn. No really. Weird but good on this kind of subject.
I mean I can fully understand that. different textures leads to different sensory reactions, and if you’re biting it you’re probably looking for that specific reaction. eating wood though would definitely count as pica I think (like the other comments have pointed out). you might want to look into types of chew toys maybe?
it looks so satisfying to chew on, especially if you imagine having little pointy cat teeth
don't worry Rachel, some birds - like sparrows - prefer to eat right of the ground, in open arreas, while other birds prefer to eat higher up! you can experiment with where you put the tree and different hights
4:42 we have those bugs in Jamaica too, we call them “40 legs” and their bites are excruciatingly painful.
For making holes I usually use a router with a circle jig (a long peice of wood with a nail for the center of the circle)
Yay! Real power tools! So happy for your family and your new home. Watching you cut that wood so easily instead of hand sawing was very satisfying after many projects full of struggle and injury lol. Great video!
I loooooove how crafty Rachel and Jun are, and how they make such a great team! Love these DIY project videos~~
Great seeing Pichi! I think it's been a while since we've seen her in a video.
Rachel's becoming better at wood working!
Rachel, you are so sweet. My mom actually realized birds LOVE when feed is placed on the ground since it mimics natural feeding and foraging ! Adorable bird feeder house, I love the coin roof,,, I wish my house looked that good
I made a solar bird bath 2 weeks ago and today they finally started using it! I had 3 doves and 1 sparrow all bathing together! Just be patient. The birds will find your feeder!
Hi! at 5:12
the ground cover: phyla nodiflora
You don't need to prepare the ground at all, it will grow anywhere. even in gravel.
just replant it in the yard and it will take over everything, no need to do anything really.
Haku’s name is actually Kohaku, just Haku for short. Kohaku means “amber” which is appropriate seeing he’s an orange cat.
1. Wood is just a thicc stick so of course Haku loves it.
2. Without seeing the full progress, it looks like some compensation for the piece with the hole was missed.
3. Of course mukade bites hurts, THEY'RE VENOMOUS!
4. CICADAS
*venomous 😅
@@patheticmortal373 Oh yeah. I always forget which is which.
So lovely to see Pichi again in the videos! She's become so much more relaxed and its amazing to see!
Strays gonna be hunting and the inside cats will be so jealous. Hakus gonna do his weird biting thing
To stop the wood from splintering when you drill into it you could put another piece of wood underneath. It’s simple but it works.
Slightly addicted to those Sakuraco boxes. Always love every single thing in there (so far) I've even learnt to love tea again. ^^ Always good to see garden progress, the bird feeder is very pretty and such a cute lizard Jun spotted! 😄
Omg Poki's dramatic meow 2:45 Such a cute voice.
One of my cats does the sitting backwards stretch too and I have been saying “oooh pichi stretch!” :3
Ive had so much stress and anxiety in my life in 2022/23 already your videos are so calming Rachels Diy and Juns Cooking helps me alot to zone out
Rachel: *makes a bird feeder from scratch*
Me: *puts a plate of seeds on the grass and call it a day* (the sparrows, magpies, doves and mynas love it tho😂😂😂 they visit everyday for a free snack/meal owo)
"Don't show my poor craftsmanship!" No Rachel, I love your DIY projects and am astounded each time you create something new!! I have 0 skill and creativity, so anything you create is amazing to me
Every time I see a new part of the house, I try to remember the house-plan and imagine what the rest of the beautiful room must look like. 🤪
I had a bird feeder on my window sill but no birb actually used it. Once I spilled some seeds under it on the window sill and birds actually came. So now I put a tray there and put some seeds on the tray and watch birds.
In summer a bird bath is also great!
I can't wait to see you guys post a video of your house tour and your flourishing garden! 🥰
our last bird feeder took over a month until some birds found and used it. it is interesting to see which ones use it, so you can put in the matching birdfood
Bless! ❤️
What a good video. So many funny and cute moments. Bird feeder is pretty too! Loved the antics of the gecko.
I never knew that "mukade" is the Japanese word for "Japanese centipede" until now.
Rachel: "We've been thinking about making a bird-feeder."
_flashback_
Jun: "We are thinking making a bird-feeder."
Yeah... Checks out I guess... 😅
It's not exactly The Godfather, but they know how to use a flashback.
A bird feeder is such a cute idea! I’ve always wanted to try and make one, but I still haven’t tried yet. 😅😂
My mother was from Okinawa, the Sakura Co box is really making me nostalgic. I used to love eating most of those treats!
"Maybe the geckos will move in. Or spiders. Probably spiders."
I felt that in my SOUL
Oh my gosh Jun playing peek a boo with the little gecko on the door was so adorable!!🥹
I’m from Okinawa, it’s so funny how much poki wanted the Okinawan donut
Must ask. Will Rachel and Jun be doing a playthrough of the game Stray, and uploading that playthrough to youtube? Would love to see them do a playthrough of Stray. It would be fun seing their cats react to their playthrough as well, since the game features a cat as the main character, and you have a meow button.
Rachel: Omg a poisonous bug
Jun: YEEEET!
Bulbasaur sharpener 😍 Jealous of the saw birthday present! It's also amazing to see how comfortable Pichi is now
It looks absolutely adorable! Maybe you'll have some crows perching on the coins or just squirrels lol
Poki once again displays that he is a "brother from another mother-cat" for my cat Loki, because they both are super food motivated and are Immovable Objects when they are trying to get the food. XD
