    -I got a circular saw, I needed to use the circular saw
    -Maybe the height of summer is not a great time to try putting out a bird feeder
    -Our yard is... thriving
    -Watch as my allergies slowly destroy my voice throughout the week this project took
    -That definitely has nothing to do with letting our yard grow out of control
    -The bugs are really happy though
    -And they're growing very, very... very very big
    -We literally have to wear ear protection around those cicadas
    -Tell me everything I did wrong with my bird feeder (I might try to fix it)

    Just a hint... the small birds like sparrows prefer to forage on the ground, as do pigeons, if you have those visiting. I've had a bird feeder for many years and we put paving slabs beneath, so the seed spills onto those and less onto the ground where it will germinate and give you a jungle.
    The birds will eat the spillage but rain does what water always does, causes seeds to grow. No matter what type of bird feeder you have seed will end up underneath. Yours is pretty darn clever and ingenious though, so congratulations! Well done! 😊👍😘🤗💖

    • @Iflie
      @Iflie 2 года назад +66

      Yeah they will still use it but at first sprinkle some underneath so they find it and then explore. They often like it if other birds like starlings make a total mess and then go eat the spilled seed on the floor. But I think it's a good spot near the tree for some of the more shy birds to use it too.

      @@xRAINxOFxBLOODx It takes 7-10 days for mosquito eggs to grow to maturity, so getting a lightweight bird bath that you can easily empty and refill frequently will keep mosquitos from reproducing, and will ensure the water is fresh and healthy for the birds. It also makes the base easier to clean.
      A large but shallow metal or plastic container is perfect - you can put a few heavy rocks in it to keep it from blowing away, and for birds to perch on. I love the look of the stone and ceramic ones, but I find them too heavy to be convenient. My parents use a cake pan on an outdoor table, and it's perfect.

      Just speculation here but I think I've kinda noticed a change in how all of their cats carry themselves. Their body and muscle tone constantly look more relaxed all of the time (excepting food-tug-of-war Poki). Maybe the significant increase in space they're allowed to live in has served to constantly chill them out more?

      @carlyh6913 2 года назад +1

      I agree Anthony I watched a bit of this again and they are so much more relaxed, I've learned from watching Jackson galaxy (cat expert) that each cat needs their own safe areas they alone can access, their own little bit of property. Which makes sense that the boys and Pichi now have those needs met and then some so we see a difference.
      I don't mean that R&J were bad cat parents or anything before, quite the opposite in that they had a small space but put their own comfort second to cats needing a home 😺

    Hey Rachel, dont worry, theyll probably go to your birdfeeder eventually, when its been there for a while and has been deemed "not dangerous" by the birds. Sometimes though, birds prefer plain wood as supposed to painted things, I dont know if its the smell of the paint or "weird color = bad" from the point of view of the birds, but they seem to prefer just wood/natural ( a coat of some kind of waterprofing "varnish" or something might still be a good idea so it doesnt rot right away, or at least on the roof). That said, food is a great motivator, theyll come. Just be patient. I had to give away the birdhouse I made because birdhouses and birdfeeders are against the rules where I live. But it made another person very happy, so (shrugs). Are you going to make a birdbath too ? Water is often a good way of drawing both birds and other animals too like hedgehogs, both for them drinking but also cleaning themselves. I have two, one just on the ground and another one that is a bit elevated. Very popular with the birds. I change the water often.

    Shiny objects scare birds when sun reflects off it. Like, it's recommended to put shiny objects (foil for example) on trees to protect berries and fruits. So maybe you should paint the coin roof to make it less shiny?

    • @ILuvAyeAye
      @ILuvAyeAye 2 года назад +19

      I read a really interesting book called Fuzz about human tensions with animals, and it said that studies suggest that passive deterrents (things like foil, scarecrows, fake owls, etc) don't work to keep birds away over time - I think it slows down birds from approaching at first, but they get used to it quickly (like in less than a week) and then ignore it.
      If she doesn't have any bird interest in a couple weeks, she might try covering the roof with something and seeing if it improves, but I don't think it will keep away birds for too long.

    Kitties so smart and curious! You know, Rachel, there's a dandy power tool that makes sawing perfect circles! I have great memories of my dad using his hand-held circular saw (like you have) like an artist on so many jobs: decks, kitchen and bathroom remodeling, even stairs! Yup, I have one too!

    Hi! at 5:12
    the ground cover: phyla nodiflora
    You don't need to prepare the ground at all, it will grow anywhere. even in gravel.
    just replant it in the yard and it will take over everything, no need to do anything really.
    Good luck removing it from that area completely. The roots can be quite tangled and dense. It is a very tenacious plant.
    I live in Australia.
    I have two cats. I also have a Haku, but he is white (named after Haku from spirited away). He is a smol boy but a muscular outside boy. And Tibs, she's a white grey tabby tortoise shell. shes massive. All fat and fur.
    They are both 7. Indoor/outdoor cats. we can't stop them.
    I really do love watching all your adventures. :)

      Haku’s name is actually Kohaku, just Haku for short. Kohaku means “amber” which is appropriate seeing he’s an orange cat.

    1. Wood is just a thicc stick so of course Haku loves it.
    2. Without seeing the full progress, it looks like some compensation for the piece with the hole was missed.
    3. Of course mukade bites hurts, THEY'RE VENOMOUS!

    Just a tip, there are saw drill bits you can use to make big circles, you can get them if you ever need to do something like this in future it would be much easier.. But whatever it arguably doesn't need to be a circle to begin with if there would be a tube used in the end, I would just make square.
    Also to make fitting of any part easier those triangles as example, draw them before cutting a millimeter bigger then you think they should be, that way you would never ended up with smaller part and anything excessive you can just sand off.

    2:36 - Oh man, that's an image of frustration! Glad you guys were able to make it in the end! If you think you'll do more projects like this, I recommend picking up a hole saw. (Basically a metal cylinder with teeth, powered by your drill.) They're pretty nice for one-off things like this. Otherwise, use a larger drill bit to create relief holes on the circumference of the circle then use your smaller saw to cut between each

    I was curious about the tube, bc it seemed sticky. Now that it's almost a week later, does the feed seem to stick to it? Id recommend putting some perches on the edges, so a little rod that is slightly lower than the food floor. You can also put some sort of greenery on the roof, so the shiny doesn't scare them away. If I'm not mistaken, reflective surfaces scare them off. It's how we kept them from eating out caterpillars when we grew fennel for a 'pillar nursery

    Do not worry too much about the birds not going for the feeder and rather for the food that fell on the ground! We have multiple bird feeders in our backyard in Texas and all the birds and squirrels constantly go for the fallen food. If you're really interested in attracting the birds to a particular spot might I suggest a bird bath or shallow pot/planter from a home store to use as a bird bath? This can and does help in increasing bird traffic.

    You just said the right thing at the end of your video there are enough insects in the summer time no bird feeding needed! There was a case in December off last year where a lot of finches died by eating at bird feeders and they concluded that each specie of birds have different parasites and other contaminants and make each other sick!
