I guess he was so used to having to scavenge in trash bins for food that he just can’t help himself. It’s a habit even though he has a good home now. Thank you for rescuing him, he’s beautiful.
No. There are some stray cats that are that are very comfortable around humans even though they don’t have a home. Loki could have been interacting with humans for years but no one took him in. It’s called having a community cats. And yes there are community cats that don’t trust humans but for the most part they do.

From my experience and observations, in a multi cat household, there is always a Poki. Uncannily smart and very persistent (usually for food). Ours is named Neo.

I had a Poki, except with a complete tail. All of my cabinets and doors had to be child proofed. All interior doors are scratched at the bottom where he was either trying to break in or break out. He was absolutely too smart for his own good. There is something about tuxedos that makes me just melt. In fact, it was Poki that got me started watching your channel. By the way, my Poki went by the name of Eldon.(aka: the best cat ever ❤)

Poki is commonly called a 'Tuxedo' cat and they can happen in any breed. I'm on my second & my mom has two so I can honestly say they are smart as a whip, have some energy, & can be a pain in the but when they want to be. My first one also figured out how to open my cabinet doors as well so every so often we'd be sitting there & suddenly hear this thumping sound & she would get in, check it out & then come back out.

I had a tuxedo like that, too. After age 5, he started calming down a little more each year. He was a loving moosh by the time he passed at 18.

I had black and white cat, when we came home late and he meow exactly like Poki does until we feed him
This looks very familiar to me. I used have a wonderful three-legged cat called Loruska (she tragically passed away since), and she was just like this. Hyperactive, and stubbornly food-focused. We couldnt leave food out even for a moment because she would try and grab it down from the table. Beside being a cleptomaniac, she was an accomplished beggar, and every time we ate she would come, stare and wail at us like its the end of the world. She had a very similar voice to Poki, btw. She was insanely talkative and was always heckling the other cats, trying to break everything breakable (the last memory i have of her being healthy is her knocking down a glass jar from a shelf she should not have been on) and if nothing else just madly gallopping around the house. She was a once-in a lifetime experience. Miss her so much😭.
Edit: She was a terrible housemate though.

My Japanese father in law found some kittens in a box in the park and brought them home. And good lord they learned how to open every door in the house. Had to start locking my bedroom door every night so they didn't loudly meow in my face in the morning, and I wasn't even the one who was feeding them.

I just noticed the time when this was posted when rewatching… Already 5 years! The cats and both of you have definitely became much different yet still similar in the same way (Poki being the loud trash Oreo he is lol) Love this channel and won’t be leaving it any time soon. ❤️
Poki used to be an outside cat. His world got drastically smaller. Of course he'll explore every single inch of it.....

Channels like The Dodo upload Videos of street animals getting a home all the time and I have not yet seen a single cat as stubborn about this as Poki.
This has likely nothing to do with exploration. If that was the reason it would mean that once Poki knew where everything was he would reduce that activity. It‘s obviously mainly about the food and because of general stubbornness. We know this cat generally likes to take all the attention while playing, it refuses to not get a door open and when it knows where the food is it will go there every day.
But Poki jumped into the plastic bin all day so my assumption is,
1: Poki is pretty stupid and stubborn so he does not actually realize there was no food in that container.
2: Poki still does not understand that his food supply has been safe for a long time now, other than on the street. So Poki is pretty panicky about getting as much food as possible.
@@ardynizunia9709 That first sentence goes right back to you: A rather uninformed assumption. Poki isn't stupid and stubborn nor is he panicky (he would show food aggression against anyone near him if he was that worried)!
I say Poki is an opportunist. He will seize any chance he gets to try and scavange food - because why not? You might never know when you'll get your next chance. Humans think they're safe in this respect only if they never had any diffrent experiences. But just ask people who have lived through wars! They always make sure to have a stash of food for emergencies even after decades of peace and prosperity! That is not stupidity but an ingrained survival instinct which makes *a lot* of sense.
Plus, what none of you seem to realize even though the owners keep complaining about just that: the plastic container actually has the stronger smells as there are old packages which had meat and/or fish in them. Poki (or pretty much any cat) is unlikely to go for scraps of vegetables if the smell of meat is right next door. Of course he tries plastic first! As a former street cat you can bet he got lucky frequently when going after this smell. So experience makes him check all the time. I doubt he will ever change that behaviour... keeping food and trash outside of the living space so Poki doesn't need to endure the tantalizing smells might be the only way to ease the tension...

Daughter had a beagle that would constantly root thru the trash bin. Perhaps it was paper towels to wipe out a pan prior to washing or napkins from dinner. Otherwise, no food scraps from prepping. He figured out how to lift the lid so even if the can was turned to the wall, he'd wiggle it out to create distance then open it without further work.
He became Type 2 diabetic needed insulin 2x daily. After a death in household, literally gorged/ate himself into a coma and never recovered.
Damn.. so impressed with this cats persistency 😂 rescue animals sure have character, that's what I love most about em. Pets for Poki, from Ireland 🐾 🤗
I feel like because he had a rough life before you guys rescued him and this is how he was able to survive, by getting into stuff for food and cover so that just stuck with him:)) But he seems so sweet and loving.
My cat is the same way! She was a "come last" cat where she lived before with way too many other cats and not enough attention, so she always tried to scavenge for food in my room when we first got her! :(
A stray that I took in would do stuff like this too :) We had to baby proof the kitchen cabinets
We got a stray kitten that was insanely food driven and would steal food off your plate even. It took a few months for her to realize the food wasn't in short supply and she'd always be well fed. She's tons of fun!
My neighbor gave me his outdoor-only cat, and now that he's indoor/outdoor combination (meows to be let out like a dog), while he's in the house he's literally IN the house. All over the place climbing everything.
thats exactly how my feral kitten is. its been a year and he still marks everything in sight and eats everything in sight, and wont stop knocking over the trashcan

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that I think the reason why Poki was so into the trash bins was because he was a street cat and his main goal for survival was probably in the trash itself, since that's where discarded and leftover food comes from so maybe it was his instincts talking
