I live near Barcelona and last summer I found a huge Boston fern next to a garbage can. It was brown and crispy in spots, and I just cut all that out, and put it in the shade. I keep it outside, even over our winter (down to 5 degrees c), and it’s now really happy. Lots of new growth.

I don't own an anthurium regale, but I watched a youtube video (in German) from a couple of botanists, who also have a shop for exotic plants. They commented that the regale sizes up quickly, always builds a ring of roots before it grows a new leaf (due to it growing on steep river slopes, so it has the support for the new leaf), goes full risk with its foliage (big leaves, but few of them) and the one thing that will block it from flourishing is low humidity. Apparently it can tolerate lower light and less nutritients, but anything less than 60% air humidity will cause crisp brown edges and less growth. They even jokingly said they do sell the plant, but don't really recommend it. I hope that helps. I still like it, but wouldn't buy it, tbh.

Re: Anthurium Regale: I was stuck in the "one leaf" club for almost half a year until I stumbled upon @plantgayforlife 's videos!! He has this really interesting way of rooting his anthuriums in a mix of semi-hydro substrate (leca or chunky perlite reservoir on bottom, mix of sphagnum / bark / tree fern / charcoal on top) in glass vases!!
When I first saw his videos I was like...what the heck...no way this would work. And I thought about my struggling regale, so I decided to try it. Sure enough, its been 3 or so months since the switch and she's managed to keep her old leaf (a little crusty but looking glorious still) AND now has a stunning new leaf! Its had both leaves now for over a month and I'm very happy. Thought I'd recommend to you to see if it helps yours!

    Hi Claire!
I own a scindapsus silver hero myself and only recently have nailed the care for it. I own around 150 houseplants and the scindapsus had been a wishlist plant since the first day i started collecting plants. I had it under a grow light and near a humidifier and it just wasnt doing well for me. The keaves went soft and floppy and were starting to turn brown. So i changed its location to a room that gets hardly any light and no humidifier and i completely forgot about it. I didjt water it for weeks ir even go into the room where it lives and one day i remembered it was there and went to check on it and it was looking better than it ever had. So my advice is to forget about it. It doesnt need a grow light and thrives well on underwatering. Hope this helps! Love your channel!

Boston ferns are super easy when you know 4 things.
    1) they love bright bright sunlight
    2) they love tons of water. An automatic drip irrigation system outside is best- every other day
    3) they love humidity- Houston/ Louisiana humidity
    4) they naturally sprawl out extremely quickly when healthy, this makes potted plants die when not constantly DIVIDED to about 1/3 the size and then put back in the pot at least yearly.

My tiny baby Anthurium warocqueanum (5cm pot) is doing fine here's what I do:
south facing window, tree in front of it so bright light, sometimes direct, sometimes filtered, a bug screen which blocks some amount of light I guess
in pon, in a candle holder that is a good bit bigger than the pot which means more water evaporates, especially since it sits on some pon to raise it up in the holder and improves circulation to the roots slightly I presume
humidity between 40-70% (I have a bunch of plants in that area, humidity drops when I have the window open)
window is usually open when warm enough
I live in Germany, it's very mild here currently, like unusually mild for summer

I was given a boston fern last year, it was beautiful, but very quickly while in my care, it crisped up and i thought it was dead. i cut it right back, and pulled the remaining stems away from the rootball as there was so much root system and it was rock solid. then planted into a self watering pot. i was sure I killed it. but now its so full and thriving.
I went a little mad buying plants last year, but now, I've decided I don't want any more climbing plants. Apart from the monstera, all the others I feel totally happy to give away to someone else. i dont keep up with moss poles well enough and they seem to grow so quickly, which usually is great, but it just means more work for me lol. I'm limited on space but genuinely do love my other plants, my zz plant, spider plants, ferns, sanseveria, alocasias and monstera, Hoya and pothos, i also love my cacti that i keep in my porch. but I've decided philodendrons and other climbing plants are not for me.

The two on the struggle bus for me (next stop Bin Central) are the Alocasia Black Velvet and the Hoya Krimson Queen. With the Black Velvet . . . mistakes were made. I've had it quite awhile, but I potted it up too soon after I bought it. It dropped all but two of its leaves. After that, it was doing the one-on-one-off routine for quite a while. I thought it was starting to look better, but then it tried to bloom and gave me two tiny leaves. I cut the flower off, but it hasn't grown any more and it lost a big leaf. I think I'm down to one droopy big leaf and two tiny leaves at this point. Space is limited and it's taking up valuable real estate. I think I'd try again with it, because I do think it's a beautiful plant. But I'd buy a bigger, more established plant and I'd leave it the heck alone for a long time before trying to mess with it at all. I didn't really think I wanted a Krimson Queen, but I saw one in a grocery store that had really nice variegation, so I bought it. It got mealybugs and then started going downhill. I've had it isolated for months, sprayed it multiple times, put a systemic insecticide on it, soaked its roots in hydrogen peroxide and water, repotted it, etc., but I found another mealybug on it recently and it's still not looking great. I don't think it'll be with me much longer.

Regarding the portadora, there's a DIY mix that includes peppermint and tea tree soaps as those are meant to be repellant to spidermites, so if you haven't yet, perhaps give that a try. There are lots of different recipes, I use 1 cup of water with 1/2 tbsp tea tree castile soap, 1/2 tbsp peppermint castile soap, 2 tbsp 70% isopropyl and 1/2 tsp 3% peroxide. I also tend to add a drop of neem sometimes because I find it can shine the leaves up nicely. Fair warning, open a window and run a fan when you spray it as it can be a bit much.

ALOCASIA’S ARE HEAVY FEEDERS! They need a synthetic fertilizer like 20 20 20 or 24 8 16. If they don’t get enough the plant will consume the oldest leaf for strength to make a new one. It will start with discoloring the leaf then the petiole will start to droop. I’ve seen it in all my alocasia and fertilizer always fixes.

I do not know what to do for that plant. I have finally put it in water to see what it does. It's actually growing a new leaf 😮 I also struggle with some of my baby aglaonemas and have even struggled with two of my huge aglaonemas. Not sure what their problem is but I had to chop them and they seem to be trying to come back but I don't know. I have also been struggling with my peperomia ruby cascade. That plant has been gorgeous and spring came and it grew for a while and then just started dying on the top. I trimmed it back to see if it can revive. The only place I can grow ferns is in the bathroom and outside in the humidity and heat.

I've noticed the plant holds onto less leaves in semi hydro (and leaves do seem a little unhealthier too). I also keep mine in the darker spots of my apartment and they seem to prefer it there! I had to open my computer to comment on the Boston Fern. I live in Alabama, USA -- so the South East of the US. You always see these hanging on people's porches. They grow so great here. You usually see a row of them hanging -- like a big Boston Fern between each porch column. I have sun ferns. And I can't kill that thing. I bought it last year and it did SO AMAZING in stark full sun and 90+ F degree days all summer. So I overwintered in in pretty medium light in my bedroom. Then I split it. I've never split a fern, but I had to get out a hacksaw to saw it into three pieces and they've done just as amazing this year. And I didn't even re-acclimate it when I put it back outside. And they don't need a ton of water. I wonder if mine is just a freak. I got it at the hardware store.
I'm struggling with a free cutting I got at a plant swap -- zig zag cactus. I've had it rooting for months. It looks like nothing has happened. It put out a few tiny roots, but no growth -- WTH? I actually just ordered one that will arrive tomorrow. LOL I'm going to repot the new plant and put my cuttings in the same pot.
Also Lemongrass. I spent SO MUCH effort getting new lemon grass to grow this year - ordered seeds 5 times I have it all around my pool. But they are already insanely root bound in 5 gallon pots and dry out so fast. And I think when they say "full sun" -- they didn't mean Alabama full sun.

We still do not understand the plant world well enough. I have 3 year old monster. It grew one leaf in those 3 years and they are all very juvenile .... also ... a cork-screw rush ... RIP, but that was my fault. My Boston Fern was my pride and joy, but this winter she took lots of cold damage as it was too big and doesn't fit anywhere anymore, She is on the mend now, though it's hardly a summer :-) Thank you for sharing the video with us.

I had a regale and it lasted less than a year. Lost one of its two leaves after a couple months and the huge leaf lasted almost a year before it finally fell off. Then the stump slowly died off. Some anthuriums are great, others don't like me. I've never had luck with forgetii hybrids, either. I also had one of those domesticum variegatas and it never sized up, it was just a skinny vine with small leaves. after three years I gave it away.

Maybe try to grow your Alocasia portodora outside on the balcony over the warmer months.
You can keep and enjoy this beautiful plant, but don't have to worry about spreading pests. Maybe it will even be less attractive for pests, with the rain, sun and wind taking care of your plant.
I think it is worth a try before getting rid of it

I will say when it comes to your philodendron, that I’ve noticed whenever I have a plant growing in those kind of tall jars with the small top… that nothing does well. Something about the oxygen and how it moved in the jar:
I know that seems insignificant. But ever since I realized those, aka using test tubes and such… they don’t ever work for me. But even talk jars tht are narrow. If the top opening is one third of the height or so with no other air… it fails. Where as every other jar seems fine: and it’s been many many times that I’ve noticed this being the case.
    Something to consider
Sorry if it sounds silly but it was a very frustrating thing for me as I have lost a lot of plants very slowly because of these jars. I’m convinced of it.

@@lisamac8503 I have success when it comes to the wide mouth jars and weirdly though I normally agree with the statement as a whole, my Hoya that was in water rooting for like 5 years, that my mother gave to me per request because it was just declining and the root mass was huge.. I don’t think she knew what to do with it and I was scared as well cause acclimating that to an airy mix was precarious to say the least…
I filled up a hanging wide mouth glass vase with bark, moss and leca and it’s actuallly very very happy though it sat there for months with no sign of improvement. Now it’s flourishing all at once and quickly.

I suspect the trouble with the Philodendron Deomesticum Variegata is the lack of oxygen to the roots. The container has a very narrow top which doesn't allow for much respiration. Before you ditch it, try the semi-hydro in a wider-topped container with ample holes set into a separate reservoir for the water. I would love to see an update on it if you do try this. Thank you for all the information you give. I enjoy your videos so much!

My ferns really thrive in self watering pots. My variegated domesticum don’t give me any issues but I don’t know what your humidity is like and what you’re feeding them. I have pretty high humidity and all my plants get fertilized with a maintenance dose of my regular fertilizer at every watering. I also use cal mag and a supplement that has microbes and mycorrhizae, fulvic and humic acid, etc, as well as worm tea. I also add liquid silica for all my variegated plants as well. It sounds like a lot but my plants have responded tremendously. I use horticultural oil on my plants as a preventative to cut down on pests as well. It’s time consuming but worth it in the long run.

@@gypsylee333 Yes, I keep my ferns in self watering pots. I have an asparagus fern (and she is HUGE), a variegated brake fern, a bird’s nest fern, and a rabbit’s foot fern all in self-watering pots and they’re all very happy. My humidity is somewhere between high 60-s to mid-70’s most of the time. Sometimes it creeps a bit higher even. It’s never below about 68. A few of the fronds on my bird’s nest got wilty at first when I put her into the self-watering pot but she recovered within 24 hours. The others never had any issues. I believe ferns like crocodile ferns and golden zebra bamboo ferns would also love this setup. The substrate I use with these is a chunky soil-dirt (you could use whatever you want but I use fox farms ocean forest), cypress mulch, perlite, and 5-6mm leca for added aeration. You could skip the leca if you wanted to.

Imagine if you’d never chopped your Dubia, how long the vine would be by now! 30ft or 10m even?!? It wouldn’t be surprising to see a huge wild Dubia vine where the top was thriving (as your fenestrated section is) but having lost all of its leaves closer to the ground. Just a trunk/stem at the base and newer, larger leaves higher up. That’s what I see happening, but with the sections split up, the base is nearly bare now.
I think maybe the base is just spent, it’s done it’s duty very well.
