The TRUTH About Ab Wheels

In this video I explain why the truth behind the ab wheel and why it often gets a bad reputation from a lot of fitness influencers and RUclips creators. Honestly, I think it comes down to the name "ab wheel." If this equipment had a more descript name, something like "anterior tension wheel" or something like that, then no one would have any reason to knock it. But instead, I see all these videos saying ab wheels don't give you abs, or "watch out for these ab wheel mistakes!" and it's all a bunch of nonsense if you ask me. I think having an ab roller is a great idea for anyone looking to build a strong core and start grasping the concept of total body tension. Thanks for watching and I hope enjoy the video!

I had a weak core before i started doing ab rollout and boy 3 months later i've done a 180. I don't 6 pack but my back problems are gone and it's been great.
That’s great to hear! Keep it up!
When I was 15 years old I had a Brain abscess and spinal meningitis. I almost died. Surgery had to be done to remove the brain abscess and I was partially paralyzed on the right hand side of my body. I am 55 years of age now. I have used the wheel for over 20 years. I know that I do not always use the wheel correctly because of my coordination and strength issues on the right hand side of my body but I still see results in different areas of my body that are good. Thank you for letting people know that you do not have to use the will perfectly to see and feel good results. My body is toned, no love handles and my flat chest does touch the floor when doing the wheel. When using the wheel a person will definitely feel those muscles working. Even a little pain. Thank you.
I can actually help you. I was a bodybuilder and powerlifter, I broke my neck, lost my right pec major, a triceps head and many connective and evening muscles in my body. Find a ab wheel that has more support, they do sell them, they do the same exact thing, exceot they have the added support if one arm is weaker then the other. I mostly use a normal wheel , but I have times when I will lose strengh for whatever reason in my right side, mostly my hand and triceps, so I have another that doesn't require the arm balance if that makes sense.
The first week I used the ab wheel my entire upper body was on fire, more than just my abs. 😳🤦🏼♂️ Much better now. One of the best and least expensive pieces of equipment. ❤️🇨🇦. Thank you for sharing. 👍💪
Where did you purchase it?
@@cartergomez5390 Amazon
I bought one in Canadian Tire. Cheap device but I must find a good ground for it. Finally, I got bored and it is lost in some storing cases, like the Lost Ark in the National Archives.
Better use your paws than the wheel. At least, you won't lose control when extending over and finish the face biting the ground
You’re going too far down and doing it wrong, I’m posting links in his other video tomorrow because he’s teaching it wrong and giving incorrect information. As a beginner your range of motion should be small and volume low also.
@@francisdery2814 yeh, I don't support Amazon, so like to find it somewhere a bit more Local.
Thank you for keep uploading high quality at and very fast pace. Great job :D
unless you were born fit everyone remembers that first time they rolled one of these out to full extension and realized they can't get back to the starting position, lol
Not true for me lol. I wasn't exactly born athletics, but before I bought my abs wheel I did a lot of leg raises, which made me able to pull off 3 reps right off the bat
Same here..i have been in calisthenics quite long before i started to use the wheel.. my first was 5 reps @@kienthanhle6230
I have been using the wheel for over 40 years. I can do the roll out from my feet. I do them twice a week. I think it is worth mentioning that if you have never done them before, go easy in the beginning. The wheel can create soreness like you have never had before. Fair warning. Good Video. Thank you.
In your experience does it help with lower abs to help build that V shape?
@@AliAlbaity The ab wheel builds abs. The fat covering the abs is eliminated at the dinner table. Although the ab wheel does fire the lats somewhat, The V taper comes from building your lats. The combination of all three will get you the V taper.
@patrickvanmeter2922 makes sense. Have you ever experimented with going sideways rather than straight down to work your obliques too. What's your experience with that?
@@AliAlbaity I do it off and on. I have never had my obliques get sore, so not sure how well they work for that. The ab wheel is a little like a pullover, just not as deep. My triceps actually get sore sometimes even though I try to keep my arms straight. Doing them from your feet is like a full body exercise.
@patrickvanmeter2922 fair enough. Appreciate the responses even though I'm sure ur pretty busy. I've been working out since I was about 13 and now Im 20 so no my stuff in general, but the ab roller is something i haven't explored yet.
Scapular stability is always a big issue for me. I haven't used the ab wheel in a long time, but this really inspires me to get it out and see what I can do with it now.
Jerem E
Same here Jerem Roll with it It Really helps!
As a complete amateur and newbie to lifting weights and just trying to work out, i bought one and i cant do even 1 rep xD
Agree. One of my fav fitness gears. Love mixing it up with jumping rope. Something like 1 min skipping/10 roll outs in EMOM fashion. Same works 90 sec skipping/15 roll outs. 5-10 rounds and feel great.
Will I be able to lose belly fat if I do ab rolls everyday?
@@andyworsnop7287 no you can’t spot reduce fat
@@andyworsnop7287 with good diet and workout you lose fat all around the body
I love my Ab Wheel. Actually have two, one for the home gym and one for when I travel. The home gym version is rather large (ca. 12") and has foot supports. The travel one is by Perfect Fitness, but it's the first version that is small like most Ab Wheels but double wide for stability. And it has a chain drive inside that gives a slight bit of assistance on the way back.
My wheel arrived from Germany yesterday! I’m headed to your beginner videos today. Thank you!
Amazing content as always
Watching this since my abs are so freaking sore after using ab wheel for first time in years yesterday. I hit abs 2-3 times a week & thought ab wheel wouldn't really affect me since I do so many ab exercises. Was I ever WRONG! Definitely adding to my routine. Thanks for video!
Yep, I remember back in high school I had a core fitness class on top of having a proper gym regimen and I always scoffed at ab wheels. Then one day I tried it, did maybe 5 rolls at best, and the next day I could barely move 😂😂
First time i used it i had to roll out of bed for a few days. just couldn't get up the normal way. It's a good workout :)
Thanks Ryan! Always good down to earth fitness videos. Thank you sir!
As a strength and conditioning coach for the past 20 years, I 100% agree with this. Spot on.
Does it help get abs or with belly fat loss
@@rediamd847you can't spot reduce fat and any exercise will burn calories and yeah I'm pretty sure engaging your ab muscles will build then stronger and more define
The first. You can't really lose belly fat with this kind of exercises, you can with diet and cardio. You might make them pop under the belly fat though. Sorry for the 1year plus delay 😅
Great exercise. Great advice. In a pinch I’ve used a towel on the floor in place of a wheel. Do not try on carpet. 💪🏻😋👍🏻
Thanks Johny for your contribution to both the cinema industry and the fitness industry. I've decided to follow your fitness channel from now on.
😂 I knew it 😂
Great points made Ryan. Thanks!
An excellent topic on the Tension Ab wheel. Thank you for sharing.
I just purchased My tension Ab wheel. I am looking forward to challenging myself with this excellent equipment.💥💪
One of my favorite workout equipment!
I have used this wheel ever since I found my fathers in the basement growing up. It is an incredible exercise that yes works your whole upper body but specifically your core. You can activate muscles within your extensions and really develop your core. I utilize this as well as the door frame pull up bar and free weights at home. If you use proper form that you need with all exercises; this piece of equipment gives you what you want fast and consistent.
Best ab wheel review yet thank you.
My doctor told me it's EXCELLENT for the back as well. Especially when you need to assist your body (by creating a stronger core) when having already worn out vertebrae.
Thanks - nice video. I'm inspired to get the dust off of my ab wheel and go use it!
Your the best explainer have ever listened to and have just followed the Chanel and clicked that button 👌
It's good up to a point, I injured my shoulder from it, because after a hard day of upper body workout I did abs with the wheel and a plate on my back for extra tension
I'm using it as a stretching tool, very nice as well.
Have never tried the Ab roller but when I tried it for the first time last week, I didn't the kneeling perfectly, and now am thinking of starting to learn standing
This information is useful thanks men.
Thank u so much. This video was very insightful and encouraging.
Great stuff thanks for sharing. I think we had an ab wheel in the house and have used it a couple of times but may be time to find it and put it to use 😄
Came up on my videos thru the algorithm. I bought an Ab Slide (as seen on tv model) a long time ago the commercial sold it well. Even creates tension when going down. Chest, abs, obliques, upper n lower back, and some other groups. It’s a great tool and easier to use to train some tricep and shoulders.
Just bought the ab wheel in this video, thanks for the recommendation, man. I was tempted just to buy a cheap one, but if it's going to last years, may as well spent the little extra and have one that isn't going to break after a chungus like me gets on it for a few reps.
Great video! Thanks!
Great video just subscribed.., thank you!!! I think you are 100% correct!
Thanks Johnny! 😎
Very helpful video thanks
Total Body Workout Equipment or TBWE for short. Great video thanks
Thanks for putting a bunch of mistakes about mistakes down the can! You don’t have to have perfect form to see results! Just do it the best you can and as you get stronger perfect your form!
I panicked when I saw the title. I love my ab wheel so far, and was worried that I was missing something. So glad this is a pro ab wheel video.
I just got me an ab wheel and it does work my entire upper body as well as my chest, abs, shoulders, arms and back. I definitely like the equipment and it does help me get a good workout. As I'm using it, I can't definitely feel the muscles feeling tight and hard.
My obliques light up like crazy with this exercise. It's one of my favorites
Well explained.. you should be in gym.. I like the way you explain… motivated by your explanation coz I just wanted to give up ab wheel although I can do 4 sets of 15 reps
Is good to mount a stopper bar on the fore floor, to set your own comfortable roll out length.
Thank you so much for the guidance
Im back here once again haha. I do very much like the ab wheel or after watching your video maybe just the training wheel. And also first!
Thank you!
Bob buckland loved his ab wheel and step up box kept him fit all them years pro wrestling, still does it to this today.
That's why I'm here
Some utilize an olympic bar without the weights for rollouts.
That works too!
Funny, I haven't seen that in my gym for years. People forgets things that used to be common!
this before and after deadlifts is awesome
Agreed! Your anterior and posterior core are 🔥 after that
One year later- Great vid. I probably would call it a Gravity Wheel or Grav Wheel since that is the way tension is created.
Thank you for this.
recent research indicates that muscle activation during extension is far more effective for muscle development than flexion. so that's one more point for a torso extension/leg lift than a sit-up/crunch-type workout... or even a plank
Great vid Ryan, thank you - I'll get back to it in the next 10 minutes - starting slow :)
I've got a pair of parallettes and a pull up bar from the same company. I. Very happy with those.
I bought an Ab Carver a few years ago on Amazon it's fantastic
Thanks man so much you encouraged me to keep using mine and ignore what the haters said
I use one at the gym after strength training - helps my shoulders.
.
Finally a good video about ab wheel.most of them on yt are so bad tbh.oh,an great channel,i just found it.suscribe.
Bought the wheel you linked, thanks for the tip, was looking at a new one as mine was pretty shitty
Love the ab wheel!!
Boxer's wheel ---- made my own out of racing go cart 4" wide tire&Aluminum hub with 5/8th's diameter very frictionless racing bearings.
Used W2 tool steel dowels( turned down .004 inches to fit-(duh 5/8th's dowels don't go in 5/8th's holes). Topped off the look
with brass sleeves for hand grips.
My First time seeing Jonny work out video 😁
Exactly what I'm looking for.
Great video 👍👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Absolutely correct.
I forgot I had an abwheel. This video just popped into my feed. I'll give them another try.
5:13 I prefer exactly the opposite: the thinner wheels because unstability will activate the core muscles (eg. obliques) even more. Some very advanced athletes like Ross Enamait even do one arm standing wheel roll-outs, which is the ultimate core destroyer.
If I want to train my abs I want to put as much attention on them as I possibly can, when using thinner ab wheels the obliques might be the limiting factor, hindering the progress with my abs.
Like a narrow pull up transfers the limiting factor from the back to the arms, a thinner ab wheel takes this away from the abs. If you want to train a muscle you have to make it the limiting factor, and this why wider ab wheels are superior in this regard.
Maybe do both?
Why limiting yourself when more options is to be preferred...
@@Ve-suvius 😂😂
One arm standing wheel roll-outs ...
You need an arm and shoulder like the Iron Man has, to be able to do those.
Ross Enamait is a Marvel Comic character. He's not a typical human.
He's a special brew.
In Finnish it is called also a ”voimapyörä” (power wheel).
Thank u very much Bro.
Love from India
Keeping your wrist straight is another throughout the movement helps to lock the posture.
Ab wheel roll outs and hanging knee raises are a perfect combination.
Can you elaborate more the benefit of this work out for runner ?
Good job sir Johnny
Johnny sins 😂😂
Dan John loves these
Can you essentially get the same output with gliding discs?
So true Ryan. I can highly recommend the Rogue Ab Wheel (not affiliated). I had a typical £10 ab wheel for years. Do you need more, no. Works great. But most have thin hard plastic handles which can be uncomfortable. The Rogue ab wheel on the other hand, while expensive for an ab wheel, is worth it for the quality (it has bearings in an ab wheel!) and the thicker and more comfortable handles. It just makes it more fun to use and thus you enjoy it more and use it more. Hope this helps and keep up the great channel.
Thanks! That Rogue wheel sounds great. I’ll have to check it out.
@@MinusTheGym And of course I meant to say "total fitness wheel"...
Rogue is good quality but a bit pricey. Any opinion on the Ab Carver Pro? It may not be suitable for taller guys because it stretches the spring to its limits.
@@keith606 I've never used the Ab Carver Pro so can't comment i'm afraid. Perhaps others can help.
@GavinBrown. I know your post is a couple of years ago now but I am glad I read it. I did some research and most ab wheels seem cheap and poorly made. I have been looking for something well constructed that will last and have just ordered the Rogue. Returned my £15 one from amazon. Yes it is pricey the Rogue but you get what you pay for. Thanks for the tip.
I like this guy
The major problem with the ab wheel is that most individuals use their hip flexors way too much as well as their arms. You need to flex the spine in order to contract the abs, but holding it rigid isn't optimal for the core contraction. You might get some development, but make sure you get that "cat" pose contraction and not just go back and forth.
So basically. I should buy that ab wheel I’ve been contemplating purchasing, thanks guy
Hi. did u achieve standing rollout
Better than an ab wheel is:
I do things tile pushups and hanging rows in gymnastic rings.
With the rings at a fairly low hight, stretch the arms forwad ina typical "roll-out" movement. Its very easy to change the load by leaning more or less.
The trouble with ab wheels is that its difficult tovary the load.
I use ring rollout mostly as a warmup.
My real abs training is hanging leg lifts. That’s for me is the only abs exercise that really feels like it's doing something.
What you could discuss about cons with the wheel is that it might give some pain in the lower back and how to avoid that. :)
Nice vid
Hey Ryan! What do you think of ring rollouts? Similar motion as the wheel but performed with a gymnastic ring. Difficulty can be adjusted depending on the level, the higher the ring the easier it is. The closer the ring is to the ground the harder it gets.
Absolutely! Ring and TRX rollouts are great 👍
@@MinusTheGym thanks !
My logic would be that with flat wheel you can't go straight and come back straight. Not even with single narrow wheel.
I think double wheel abs roller would be best for exercising in a straight line.
How about the new rebound ab roller ? Which has the elbow support.
A little story: I lift barbells, cross fit etc since 2013 in my 60's now and decent shape and I found my son's ab wheel lying around and tried it and fell flat on my face! I started swinging clubs and maces about 3 years ago and found the ab wheel lying around again last year - and boom ab roll out no problem - then I did a standing roll out! All the way out to tip toes and all the way back. Only change in my program was the maces and clubs. Then I made my own ab wheel with parts off of Amazon.
People put down everything. And it's exceptional noticeable in the workout community from my point of view. "No, you're doing it wrong" and my response is almost always, "if the person isn't actively causing an injury, they are at least doing something. Calm down"
Please answer if ab wheel roller safe for CS mom for 5 years now
Thanks for reply please
I always strain my lower back when I use an ab wheel. It can take a month or longer for it to heal.
Did you achieve the standing rollout?
I was using a barbell as a rollout, on my knees for 2 months every 3rd day and it burns and sores my abs, we’re I have to be careful when rolling down nice and slow because the pain was to much, but I stuck to it even if I had to do half rollouts to finish my sets, and now finally pain free! I could do the roll out so smooth, so is time to get me an ab wheel and try standing roll outs
i can do 20 reps but i feel pain on whatever the opposite side of the elbow is called. i'm calling it the Ubow
I'm up to doing standing rollouts.
Tension wheel sounds good and makes sense
where you stand on return springs. i don't like em?
59 years old here, I use mine 2-3 times a day, 5 days a week, on top of 6/18 intermittent fasting, I try to eat well, rock solid abs with nearly no fat, you go to be careful though, you can hurt your lower back real quick, especially in the beginning!
Is this type better than those with elbow rest?
There's a new gadge called elbow ab wheel. Can u review on that?
