I, too, grew up watching Jack on TV. I was 6 or 7 y.o. and would follow along, doing the exercises. My mother thought it was so cute. I'm now 66, in great shape from regular workouts, and free of any and all medications. Jack LaLanne was a great role model and I am grateful for his influence. Keep up the good work!

I'm 72 and was a big Jack Lalane fan. After some trouble, I used Jack's examples to get myself up to 1000 push ups and sit ups every other day while locked up. That core fitness served me well when I got out and led to a life of fitness pursuits. Thanks Jack!

He was my hero. I grew up watching him on TV in the morning before school. There's a hotel in Orlando that has a 50s theme. We stayed there for a few nights and its gym was Jack LaLanne themed. Yeah, the dude was a machine. He didn’t stop until the day he died. I heard pneumonia got him, but only because he was stubborn and didn’t go to the doctor. Had he got antibiotics for it he probably would’ve made it past 100.

@@MinusTheGym no doubt. He must have had a lot of healthy mitochondria from his muscle tissue. Heck, even if he had taken NAC he might have pulled through his lung infection. I later did research on him and I was amazed at how extremely fit he was and everything he accomplished. I was disappointed to hear when he died of pneumonia because I thought for sure he would live past 120. Another amazing athlete is Clarence Bass. He’s now in his 90s. Jack LaLanne is the true definition of nobility. Not the billionaire class, not European aristocrats, not the corporate chiefs, not politicians, etcetera. True nobility only comes from the example one sets.
By the way, if his wife had not pushed him into going to the emergency room for an ingrown toenail, where the hospital infected him with staph, he'd probably still be alive today. Well, maybe! I knew him personally and he was my lifelong hero.

I remember his show on TV when I was little, as well as his various tv appearances over the decades.
And don't forget his gym commercials starring Rachel McKlish!
What I got most from Jack was being in it - health and fitness - for the long haul.
Not just some period of my life in my 20's & 30's.
And NOT just being some strong guy who can press heavy weights for a couple of reps, but is otherwise a limited mobility guy.
I see LOTS of guys my age and a bit younger in the gym who fir that description.
Jack showed me that you can be physically fit for a very long time, as long as you take care of yourself.
And it doesn't cost a lot.

Started doing push-ups between chairs as a kid in the mid 60s, thanks to Jack’s morning show.
He taught me to be creative. Made it a lot easier keeping my gains during Covid shut downs. Really enjoy doing dips at 90° angle counters/railings. I’m sure he inspired me as a kid to do pull ups too. His home approach helped get me to the point where I could start exercising in a gym at age 62. Now turning 66, I’m doing far more full range pull ups than any of the young people at a 56,000 square-foot facility. That’s not a good sign! It’s truly hard to believe what can happen with continued work. Starting is always the hardest part and Jack was my inspiration. Even made a few mimicking videos during Covid. Lol
I imagine that the number of lives that Jack has affected long term will be underappreciated.
    Thanks for reminding us!!

I was a kid in the 70's and had heard of Jack, but I never saw his show. I probably saw a juicer commercial here and there, but not his show. And the pull-up contest you mentioned is actually pretty easy to believe, as there are many bodyweight athletes that can do more pull-ups than body builders. People associate size with being able to do more than lift heavy weights, but that isn't usually the case.

There are a lot of Jack stories, and he was one of the first modern health fanatics on Venice Beach and was a lifeguard there! His main aerobic exercise was swimming (1 hr/d) which was usual for a body builder. Look for the famous pic of the sun setting over Venice beach dunes with 4 guys in formation, one in backward arch on bottom and the 3 other on each others shoulders on the first. One of them is Jack and another was Bill Pearl. Word is that Mark Wallberg is working on a LaLanne movie.

The reason 'calisthenics' is so effective, and powerful, is because the entire body is called to action for the various movements. Accordingly, the nervous system is stimulated, and grows and expands, and as JL demonsrated, it has remarkable effects.
Indeed, just look at any competitive callisthenic exponent, and their muscles look like that of an advanced body builder...sans weights?!

I read one of his books when I started working out seriously as a teenager and making smoothies with a blender, though I don't think they were called smoothies back then. I tried adding wheat germ and other "strange" ingredients Jack recommended. He was inspirational to the end.

I met him at a running race in Denver in the late 80's. Super nice guy--and he was still obviously very fit.

Firstly, this is the first video I've seen from you and this was great! I always have been interested in the history of fitness, and this video was very informative. Thank you for this video!
Secondly, I'm 23 years old and I have never heard of Jack, and I would think not many of my comrades have either. Although I should say that I am not american, so it also could be a cultural thing since I doubt Jack's program was ever aired here in Finland.
But I must say, it was great hearing about Jack and also about your channel - all the best to you!

I remember his show in the 80s. I didn't really take fitness to heart until i joined the Army in 84 or really until 1990. His show was the first follow along video.

I'm 67, so yes, I was a kid and watched Jack every morning (with my mom doing the exercises). I heard that if someone wanted to interview him, they had to join him in his morning workout first to get the interview. I loved his two white dogs that he'd bring out at the beginning of the show.

I definitely saw him all the time on TV in Southern California in the 70s as a kid. Knew nothing about him then, just thought he was a bit old and odd in his full body gym uniform. I knew a few more things much later but didn't know he invented a lot of things like pulley weights. He was insanely cool and I was too young to realize it, and before the Internet most people didn't know the past of people they saw on TV unless they closely followed them for years.

I only knew Jack from TV commercials. From those I knew he was big into nutrition. Back then I wasn't aware of his physical achievements. I had no idea his TV program continued into the 80s. When I read his wiki page years ago I was blown away not only by his physical achievements but also by his many varied visionary accomplishments, inventions, innovations, and overall life philosophy. He was more than one in a billion, because there's never been another Jack Lalanne so far! If the sincerest form of flattery is imitation, Jack was flattered by many rival exercise programs over the years, and although I never saw Jack's program, I do remember "Exercise With Ed Allen". His was a popular show in the day, but he was no Jack Lalanne, that's for sure.

When I was a boy in the 1970's I would watch his show on TV (in black and white) and would follow along and do the exercises.

I missed Jack's prime. Only knew him from the Jack Lalane PowerJuicer. I'm 33. As I have gotten into fitness, he has been fascinating to me.
