      +Nathan Jones It's not really sad considering some textbook definitions of gender and sex make them seem synonymous. For example, Merriam Webster defines gender as: "The state of being male or female." So it's not much of a distinct difference between the two as you might have previously believed.

      no i mean the stupid commenters, mixing up sex = biologiccal, and gender = mental feeling .

    I'm biologically a girl, but I act, dress, talk, sit in a masculine way. I keep my hair in a buzzcut and wear EXCLUSIVELY guys' clothes. I have a visible 6-pack, am pretty damn muscular, and enjoy any traditionally male activities. I've always though "tomboy" was the word used to describe people like me, but so-called tomboys STILL claim to enjoy being feminine and dolled-up from time to time. I don't. If I'm wearing a dress or anything that can be considered feminine/girly, I don't feel like myself. I feel like someone else, I feel weird and terribly uncomfortable. Femininity does not define me at all.
    However, I'm not a transgender man, because I don't feel like a guy trapped in a girl's body. I know I am a girl, and I gladly accept that. I don't accept being feminine and delicate, it's true. But I accept my female identity. I am not a lesbian either, although many people keep assuming that. I'm just a straight girl who believes people should wear what truly defines them, and what they find comfortable. Nobody should wear a certain thing according to what's in their pants.

      hey. thank you for this comment. just wanted to say, gender and sexuality are completely different and your feelings about being a masculine straight woman are totally valid. you will continue discovering these parts of yourself and learning more, gender is fluid and we do not need to confine ourselves in any sort of way if it doesn't make us comfortable. you do you. rock on

    how can you complain about labels and then create all these different labels that put people into very specific groups. surely its less divisive to just be male/female or human?

    I'm a straight woman, but I feel more comfortable wearing more typically masculine clothing (pants, T-shirts, etc) and presenting myself in a more masculine way. I also like a lot of stereotypically male things (math, bikes, protecting others, holding doors open for people, etc. - like not necessarily something men should do/like, but what is typically expected), and am generally more aggressive than an average woman.
    I wish they had included someone who identified as a woman, was straight, and not overtly non-feminine, but still didn't feel comfortable presenting as very feminine or liking feminine things, if that makes any sense.

    • @KaiDecadence
      @KaiDecadence 4 года назад +5

      "Identified as a woman". Huh? They are not claiming to be trans, they accept the reality that they are women but that doesn't mean to have to conform to femininity. Are you saying that you wish they featured a woman who looked slightly feminine yet has more masculine interests? Kinda like the character Donna from That 70s Show? If so then okay, I get what you mean but just saying there, these women know they are women.

    I love that in the English language you can just use the pronoun "them" and adjectives and verbs are the same for everyone.
    In my language (French), all of these vary depending on you being male or female, so there is basically nothing for non-binary people and altering the language would be so hard.

    • @owlnemo

      Je pense comme vous qu'utiliser "la personne qui" semble effectivement être un bon compromis.
      Ça me rappelle le terme "Lehrperson" (littéralement personne qui enseigne, au lieu de "Lehrer"/"Lehrerin": enseignant/enseignante) qui s'est pas mal généralisé dans les écoles pédagogiques de Suisse allemande (je ne sais pas ce qu'il en est pour les autres pays germanophones).

    Guys, these genders weren't just something tumblr made up recently. The male and female binary genders are actually a very European concept. For example, many Native American cultures had "Two-Spirits", people of a gender not 100% male or 100% female, and the Hijira (I think that how it spelt) in India, which is a similar concept. There is also evidence of non-binary genders existing in parts of Italy and Mexico, as well as several other countries and cultures. Don't believe me? Do the research yourself.

    the comments are so ignorant like "i dont understand this identity or lifestyle so i must reject and make fun of it immediately" like humans want to belong to a group thats human nature like how hard is that to understand i cant. honestly where yall think female and male come from like where yall think race come from? ppl saw they was different and labels helped to build identities of people who might be different and we don't have a problem with labels like "girl" "boy" or "black" and "white" like you think those labels existed from the beginning of time? no, someone had to create it and then accept it. That's culture, its 2016 we should know this by now

      @MrBloodySpirit 8 лет назад +2

      And what's wrong with labels?

    • @kirani111
      @kirani111 8 лет назад +8

      Elite Daily:Humans have an innate desire to place labels on everything. Labels
      give people a sense of order, and a way of distinguishing things.
      Yet, people aren’t things-people are too dynamic to be placed in boxes. A person’s race, sexuality, socioeconomic status or geographic origins does not define all that he or she is or will be, and labels often warp our perception of people. In essence, they promote both blatant and unconscious prejudice.

    • @crazy808ish
      @crazy808ish 8 лет назад +5

      Male or female or races are what you are. Butch(etc,) is how you feel. No comparison. Even if people identify similarly in one way. They're still different in other ways. People are different. Just face it. That's why when people meet each other, they focus on finding many commonalities. Not sticking to one like it means everything to them.

    • @kirani111
      @kirani111 8 лет назад +5

      fmadiva
      That's just my take on it. I can understand someone and connect with them without utilizing labels by simply spending time with them and getting to know them, rather than taking shortcuts and saying 'oh I'm [label]' and assume what comes with it. I will acknowledge that labels play a big part in communication; they're easy and quick as a method of understanding someone. But that's why they're such a delicate thing. They're not necessarily helping you understad someone by who they are, but by who you /think/ they are, because labels are very personal things with definitions and connotations that vary much from person to person. To one, the "immigrant" label may have a bad connotation and carry prejudice, while to some it is simply a statement of their social status. To connect with people through labels is to say "I'm gay, therefore I've had the same experiences as this other gay person. I feel a connection to them now." Now this could be true, or it could be a complete logical fallacy depending on the people involved. It's simply too much of a complicated topic, that of labels. I for one, though I dislike lables, admit and accept that they're an innate part of our societies, and they come in good and bad. The least we can do is realize what labels are and what they do.
      P.S sorry for the long post xD

    It's a shame to see so many negative comments. To everyone who isn't going what these people are going through, I suggest you stop putting them down. Stop giving assumptions, statistics, and insults. You don't have to go through what they go through, you aren't living their lives, you don't know who they are. So I recommend that if you don't know how it feels, then stop giving recommendations, because in the end, you are just going to damage people.

    When someone asks you, "are you a girl or a boy?", they aren't asking "do you wear dresses?" or "do you have a beard?" they are asking what genitalia that you have. No matter what name you give yourself, there is no denying what you are, its not something to hide or be ashamed of its just like someone asking do you have arms or legs. It's sometimes very tiring being a masculine straight woman. When a man flirts with a woman you usually assume they do it because they're interested in that woman. But when you're a masculine woman you might just be an experiment to men. They flirt with you because they find you intimidating or because they see the relationship between you two as some kind of a "bromance". A good example of this is how my friends boyfriend acts towards me. He stares at me, finds me very funny and always laughs at my worst jokes when no one alse does, touches me on my shoulder and head , sits very close to me etc. Those are all things people usually do when they're attracted to someone. But because I'm masculine it isn't a problem even tho he has a girlfriend because "I'm one of the guys". If he did the same to any feminine girl it would be seen as extremely disrespectful to his girlfriend. I have no experience in dating because most guys just find me weird.

    I was *almost* totally with this video, based on its title anyway, until "top surgery" was talked about. I thought this video was about masculinity, not gender dysphoria. I thought it was about people accepting themselves, but then the top surgery thing came up and I was like "what"? I mean, it's slightly clickbait to make it sound like it's about female masculinity and then go into how people hate their bodies. It's fine though, I accept that some people hate their bodies.
    The part that I actually *didn't* like about this video is how it suggested that when guys are masculine, that it's inherently misogynistic. I highly disagree with that.
    Generally I'm a lot more comfortable around masculine women than feminine women. There is a certain element to stereotypical femininity, no matter what gender or sex that someone is, that makes me feel like I'm being judged in a very, very negative way. People who are really feminine usually have to prove (often just by proxy of hearing them talk about what they're about) they're not judgmental in those ways for me to eventually feel comfortable.
    Some of it is because I'm a masculine gay man, and there is still a bit of expectation for gay men to be somewhat feminine, and unless I'm wearing makeup or something, like when I went through a purple phase earlier this year, I end up having an uncomfortability because of some of the very things said in this video--that masculinity on guys is inherently misogynistic.

    I still identify as female, but there has been a time in high school when I thought that I was trans. Except trying to deliberately appear more butch or pass as male didn't feel right for me, it even felt toxic because I thought that I had to reject my feminine traits (or conversely, my masculine traits) to fit into a label. There are definitely a lot of female stereotypes that I cannot relate to and I see as mere social construct, outdated norms, or fashion/aesthetics. And I honestly don't like the "I don't wear heels" or "I'm not sappy" arguments, because I think that heels are just heels, and feelings are feelings (everyone has them). I just like to be in touch with every aspect of myself regardless of whether society typically classifies it as masculine or feminine. Just be true to yourself and give traditions no f**ks.

      "Girly" things like clothing and activities do not determine your gender if whether or not you like things like makeup. That is just personal preference (and gender roles usually play a part in). Being genderqueer doesn't mean you do not like the typical thing a biological cis female would like or a biological cis male. It means that mentally you feel more masculine/feminine/or neither than what your body says.

I also know you can identify as female, as one of your identities, when you are genderfluid, but you never get to know the people in the video, what identity do they identify as, what are their prefered pronouns, etc? And then they just says female in the questions..
      I don't even know if some of the people in the video feel disrespected for those kind of questions or not, bc I just know they're gender neutral, and not the whole identity of all, and the pronouns, I just feel very confused and don't know how to react about this. Yeah, I would say that the video itself is problematic, rather then transphobic.
      I know what they did, they tried to be including with this kind of video, but in the end: unfortunately, they failed. :/

      sometimes people who are different from the societal norm (in any kind of way) feel alone, isolated, or weird. having something to identify as can unite them and allow them to find others like them. Having other people who are 'different' in the same way you are can make you feel less alone or weird. This concept goes for a lot of characteristics, not just sexuality/gender/gender expression (like for people of different nationalities living in foreign countries, just to name one example). Also, some people don't want to identify as anything and that's fine too.

      Because Masculinity is an observable set of traits, and Femininity is an observable set of traits. By extension, observable male and female traits/behavior are common in a wide variety of animal species. It comes down to hormones and biology which is scientifically observable. It's not really a stereotype if it's so common that it's the norm. Of course there's outliers like gender non-conforming people who appear in this video. The point is males tend to be masculine more than females.

  • @sahanak5041
    @sahanak5041 6 лет назад +2

    I don't see why there has to be a label for this. If you were born with female genitals you are female. It doesn't matter if you dress more masculine as there isn't anything that says that females cannot dress and act "manly". People who are identifying as non binary are stengthenring negative stereotypes. No one fits the perfect cookie cutter women, everyone has masculine traits. So be proud to be what you are and redefine gender norms not jsut use a different label.
    Also, I'm not referring to transgender people, this is more directed at anyone who is "non binary" or gender fluid

    I feel for these women, I was a tomboy for a looooooong time like 5th grade through a couple of years in college. Still kind of am. It wasn't even like I was a sporty girl I just didn't like dressing girly. when I got older I was pressured into thinking I was gay.... I don't like girls. Never have never will. I'm half way to 50 I've figured out who I am by now. I just never saw the appeal in dressing up all the time. I felt like it was a waste of time.you can't judge people by the way they look.

    I'm unsure about how I identify, but I do dress and act pretty masculine. I feel pressured to act more feminine because the people around me, including my parents, want me to be less of a guy and more of a girl so i'll "fit in." I get called a guy a lot, and I get teased for wearing a binder. I don't see why my clothing and attitude makes it so difficult for me to be around. I dress and act to make myself comfortable, and whoever has a problem with it can leave.

    • @YevOnegin
      @YevOnegin 7 лет назад

      Its not your appearance that makes you difficult to be around, its your constant worrying about it, your self obsession, and your constant need to fit in with those who don't fit in that makes you difficult to be around.

    I've never given people labels or try to figure out "what they are". I just accept them and who they are as individuals- its simple and easy. They're just them, just a person and their traits ^v^

    • @CodeDarkBlue
      @CodeDarkBlue 8 лет назад

      Labels are important to some people. If they tell you they identify a certain way you should respect that.

    • @kirani111
      @kirani111 8 лет назад

      Of course. What I meant to say is *I* don't put the labels. Whatever they identify by I don't question- its who they are. I don't say "panromantic demisexual? That means you're like this". I just nod, move on. And if they go by "ze/hir", you bet I'll remember and respect that, yet I won't go "oh, so you're agender" even if it seems logical to assume. Maybe they're genderfluid; until they tell me I'll make no assumption. In fact, even if the next day they went by "he"- I'd just nod and accept it without thinking "genderfluid!". Labeling often warps our perception of people, conciously or unconciously promoting prejudice. Likewise, people are too unique and complicated to be categorized and placed in boxes. I can respect a person's traits and preferences without labeling them :)

    I don't think mental caracteristics have to be female or male. Some are just more prevalent in females or males because of our society constructs. Same with clothes, hair, etc. The only things male or female are sexually differentiated organs and phenotypes, and sexual chromosomes alleles.

    I really don’t get it. Why do we have to have labels for how you want to dress? Gender is which genitalia you feel comfortable having, it shouldn’t be used for anything else. Your personality and “presentation” simply isn’t a gender and complicates gender-specific medical details.

  • @ArtsandCook101

    I think it's wonderful to see the perspective of non-conforming/identifying and agender persons, but I would like to see a video about women who identify as female AND identify as masculine to further show that masculinity isn't exclusively male. Just because you're masculine, doesn't mean you're any less womanly than someone who wears pink frills.
    -
    I don't want or mean to further create a gender binary, but I think it's important to know that just because you have masculine traits, doesn't mean you have to identify as agender or gender non-conforming, you can still be as much of a woman and/or man as anyone else. If that's what you want.

    I'm so angry at what this society has come too, basically all the popular girls looks the same and people are afraid to be who they are. everyone thinks its a big deal but in a good way to be different but its not. I actually hate society and no one understands that we are falling in this world, teenage girls slap on makeup and have a full on stare out when there is another girl, for some reasons boys cant show emotion for fear of appearing "girly"? wtf?
