    SYNOPSIS
THE GREY AREA is the story of Keagan Anfuso, a young adult female who is more masculine than feminine. Since birth, her life has been heavily affected by antiquated definitions and stereotypes of gender in oppressive, strange, comical, and terrifying ways. Throughout the film, Anfuso shares her fears and insecurities caused by bullying and gender stereotyping, as well as her unique and surprisingly simple perspective on her place in today’s culture. Featuring re-enactments of Anfuso's experiences and interviews with other masculine women, THE GREY AREA helps viewers understand gender expression and how to support children, teens and adults to be themselves.

The stonewall era woman regretting that her generation’s struggles did not save future generations from discrimination and pain had me in tears. Powerful film. I love masculine women.

That woman was me. So thank you.
And despite many reassurances that what happened to us made a difference for the generations that followed us; it didn't. Seeing Keagan and the other women expressing the pain they suffered DECADES after I did hurt my soul. We need to do better as humans. I am not that different, as Keagan so aptly stated: haircut and clothes.

My mom keeps telling me, you could be pretty. If you tried.
I don't have to try. Women all look different. Some are prettier than others. Doesn't matter. I'll be pretty enough for someone. Without makeup and dresses.

I'm a gay man, but this was in my recommended for whatever reason. I decided to give it a watch to expand my horizons. I'm glad that I did! Amazing work on this very rarely-discussed topic. I have a masculine aunt who I'm sure would completely agree with the views you expressed here. I will share this with her!

Thank you so much for making the film, I feel people don't talk enough about being a masculine woman in public. I loved the part when you discussed how at the end of the day its just clothes and a haircut, yet people treat you completely different because of it. I feel really seen, amazing film!

It's beautiful how the five women could share their perspectives so openly in a safe circle and hopefully they feel less alone because of it. And the part about the grandmother having the lightbulb moment with the photos almost made me tear up a bit. Also liked when there was the rapid fire common sayings that masculine women hear. Everything about this was just very well crafted with a lot of heart and emotion into it!

Also Keagan you have got to drop the affiliate links for your wardrobe please, hook us up, we need to know.

I felt this film so deeply thank you for making it and bringing these perspectives together and telling these stories! I'm grateful I had cosplay to help facilitate the exploration of different gender expressions that led me to relax what felt like feminine requirements and restrictions in how I present regularly. Hoping for the day when we can all be safe and seen everywhere one day, but it is good to hear your voices while we work to get there!

I’ve thanked you for this on another platform before, but I need to do it here too. You’ve made a beautiful and personal project that hits so close to home for so many other people, and you’ve done it so well. The recreations are particularly visceral.
I can’t tell you what it means to me to see representation like this, I find that this shared experience is something rare even for other gay women. I was treated terribly for my masculinity, I felt different and strange for as long as I can remember, but I never relented, not once. I somehow knew it would be more painful to pretend to be someone I wasn’t, than to keep going to school every day where it was hell. I just hope other girls can see me and know there’s a way through. I wish I had had something like your film when I was younger. Thank you again Keagan.

I love hearing stories about the queer experience!

I really enjoyed listening to the different perspectives and experiences of each women. I think its honestly unfair to treat someone differently based on an asinine worldview, especially something as little as social presentation.
Side note: I know its not the topic of the video, nor am I trying to detract from this video. Thought I believe related to the topic, I'd definitely want to see a film/documentary on the topic of feminine men and what they have to go through as well, what challenges there are from femme men of different class, sexualities (Bi,Pan,Ace and Straight, etc.) Cisgender, Transgender, races, religions, etc.
Maybe an interaction/discussion between masculine women and feminine men about the similarities and differences that they each face.
I ended up finding the link to this video in a subreddit called r/GNCStraight

I really enjoyed this video for its inclusion of masculine women, who are poorly represented and mistreated as you clearly show.
But surely your inclusion of Kourtnee Devoe undermines your message of celebrating gender non-conformity in females? For one Kourtnee is not a female, so it’s quite misleading to not state that outright given the title of the video. I assumed Kourntee was a woman with androgen insensitivity syndrome at first. but Kourtnee is a gender non-conforming male, and same sex attracted. Presumably due to the pressures of homophobia and family shame of being a gender non-conforming male Kourtnee had likely internalised, Kourtnee declared femaleness. This is gender CONFORMITY of the highest kind and a poor example of what this documentary seems to preach.
This documentary seems one step away from the realisation that identifying as transgender in this deeply homophobic and gendered world is just a way for gender non-conforming people to hide from prejudice and mistreatment. I don’t think we should demonise people who make this choice but it is nonetheless perpetuating a culture of acceptable ‘male’ and ‘female’ behaviour based on stereotypes.

Very good documentary, but I keep seeing these little things that set me off a little bit as a masc female on T. A lot of us who are on T long enough tend to have just as much or more experiences in common with trans women than cis women regardless of gender presentation-- still identifying as female, even when your peers (including LGBT peers) see you as a man. The bit about 'LGB' teen suicide stats made me a little uneasy in particular. I'm glad there was a trans woman in that group meeting talking about female masculinity.
