    In my opinion the 85 is more flattering on the face. The 135 seems magnify the face causing it to appear larger and rounder. Full body shots with the 135 have a cool perspective.

    To me, the 135mm does better with full body shots. The half body and close ups are a bit boring because of how little background is included.

    I use an 85mm f/1.4 Nikkor and a 135mm f/2 Nikkor for portraits with full-frame cameras. Love the 135mm for tight face portraits. Love them both for half-length and head & shoulder portraits.

    Great tutorial as always. I own an 85mm 1.8 and love it so much for portraits... However, I shoot with a half frame dslr, so my 85mm acts like a 100mm more or less. That’s kind of finding a happy middle between the 85 and the 135mm!

      You have what's called an APS-C sensor. Half of 100mm would mean you have a 50mm.
      Rather, your 85mm is equivalent to a 135mm on your camera.

    I own the Zeiss 135mm2 for my Z6/Z7 bodies and with the EVF and focus peaking shooting manual is much easier for quick focus. Hard to beat the bokeh and sharpness of this lens. Great for 3/4 and head/shoulder shots. I have a 85/1.8 as well.

      @@JJ-vp3bd I sold my Zeiss 135/2 and purchased the Sigma 135/1.8. I also own the new S line Nikon 85/1.8 for my Z7/Z6 bodies. If I had to choose 1 of those lenses I would buy the Sigma 135/1.8. Hard to go wrong with either so a difficult choice. If money is a concern then the cheaper one would work. Can't lose either way.

You have completely convinced me to get the 135!! I also have to thank you for sharing KEH with us, you have saved me so much money AS WELL as my paranoia on how the product will perform being used! Whilst, I love 135mm and have the Zeiss 135mm f/2 APO Sonnar and Fujifilm 90mm f/2, I really wouldn't recommend them over an 85mm for a second lens. The issue is versatility. Whilst I love the 135mm and prefer the compression you get from the lens, the added distance, does become a bit of an issue on fuller length portrait shots, both in terms of communicating with your subject and when using the lens in tighter spaces like a studio.
    If someone is a Nikon user, I would recommend the Nikkor 105mm f/1.4e, as a compromise lens between the 85mm and 135mm (I prefer it to the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 just because of the weight difference) and there are various other 105mm lenses available at f/2-f/2.8 for various systems.

    • @hikertrashfilms
      @hikertrashfilms 7 месяцев назад

      But if you already own two bodies and the 50mm F1.2 then getting the 85 would be stupid. 135 is the ticket. Deploy the 50 1.2 and 125 1.8 at the same time.

    The 135mm is great for events and weddings. Gives you that nice distance but makes it look like you’re standing right in front of the couple or guest.
    The 85mm, specially the sigma version is a super heavy lens. If you’re shooting weddings I would say go with the 135mm. Lighter lens and you get great results.

    So for the last 2 days I have been contemplating between the 85 1.4 and 135 1.8 Sony G Master. The rest photo of the full body shot at 6:20...and what you said at the end 12:30 "if you have a 35 go for the 85, and if you have the 50 go for the 135" - seals the deal. Thank you Jessica.
    I also got the 24-70 and 70-180 F2.8. Would the prime at 135 be noticeably better than the zoom lens at 135?

    135mm blurs the backround more even with close proximity with the subject (eg. Wall, gate, bushes etc) An 85mm 1.4 is no match for the 135mm 1.8 outdoors

    what would the disadvantage of just having a zoom lens

    • @zulfphotography
      @zulfphotography 4 года назад +1

      That's a great point, I think from my experience with primes you just don't get the same sharp snappy look from an equivalent length in zoom.

    • @denyxrunner
      @denyxrunner 4 года назад

      The biggest advantage from primes are that they are way brighter because they have a larger aperture (the f number the lowest is the biggest). You can shot in low light with better quality and the aperture affect also the background blur know also as bokeh. The bokeh is the reason number one why you want primes for professional work

    I personally prefer the 85mm because I shoot portraits with both full frame and crop sensor Sony mirrorless cameras. The 85mm is more usable on the crop body since the equivalent focal length is 112.5 mm which is still a viable focal length. The 135mm is a bit too long for a cop camera.
    However, I do use a few 135mm legacy lenses for theeir distinct renditions...

    Horrible color, and there is nothing beautiful about any of this. Framing a plus size girl with enough dead space for a group is not serving the content. Blown, over exposed landscape is no pass for lousy framing. If the subject's head was in the same place in the frame relative to the markers in the background and the edges there would be little difference between the full length images. The compression aspects of 135 is lost on a a plus size subject wearing a black sail. I stopped watching there. Your cuteness in real life is swell and engaging but the work is problematic from both editorial and academic perspectives.
