    Great recommendations for beginners..I agree with you that the nifty 50mm 1.8 is a good lens to start with if money is tight...that's the one I got with my Nikon and used it until
    I was able to upgrade to a Tamron 24-70mm! And then I lucked up on a used 55mm 2.8 macro lens and I feel I'm ready for most situations..THANKS for this

    Hi Jessica. I discovered your channel today, and I have already watched half a dozen videos. People like us who grew up without having things do find it difficult to be casual about our purchases, even when we are doing well. I have gone through my own journey of not having anything, then collecting things, then giving it all away, then collecting things again. Please don’t feel bad about your purchases. Some RUclipsrs have a room to store their camera equipment. I love your passion and positive energy. Stay yourself and keep creating. May good things happen. 🤗

    You don't need to justify spending your hard earned money! specially when it's an investment for your business and it will pay itself many times over. I have a 50mm 1.4 that I love and I recently bought a 24mm 2.8 that has become a favorite. I am now saving for a full frame upgrade so once I achieve this goal I will invest on more lenses.

    I have had the 50mm f/1/4 for 5-ish years, and I use it on almost every session, but I have noticed in certain situations it has serious focusing issues. I'm planning to upgrade to the f/1.2 for my next lens purchase. :) I already have the 85mm f/1.2, and it's seriously amazing (bought it used for $1000). After shooting with that for the last 5 months, I'm even more excited to pick up the 50mm f/1.2 because 50mm is such a comfortable focal length, and I know the quality on that one is through the roof!

    Thank you! As someone not growing up with a lot of money and still struggling because I'm trying to work myself out of a money wise poor upbringing, it means a lot to hear that being able to afford expensive gear is NOT common and not something to expect of ourselves easily. There are definitely times when I feel like I can't hold up to ppl my age because I don't have that financial background.
    And I want to get some sigma lenses, but I've heard bad things about their autofocus on DSLRs... I have a canon SL3.. any recommendations???

    I've bought all my gear for the past few years used and have only had a problem once-- bought a 50 1.2 which ended up having fungus in it. But since I paid via goods and services, I was protected, and I was able to get a full refund and send it back to the seller (I ended up buying the Sigma 50 1.4 instead since I've heard it's a lot sharper and I'm super happy with it!). As long as you use goods and services, you're pretty much good to go.
    I generally see 50 1.2's going for about $800-900 on the used market, and they're $1300 new on Canon and Amazon. Not trying to expose you or anything, just don't want to see anyone getting ripped off!😬

    • @JessicaWhitaker
      @JessicaWhitaker  5 лет назад

      did you buy your 50 from someone you know? like i said in the video, i explain to only buy used if you either know + trust the person OR if it's on a website where everything is reviewed (such as KEH Camera). sorry i dont fully understand what you mean about exposing me i shared some super clear guidelines for buying used

    • @joshuasagar1423
      @joshuasagar1423 5 лет назад

      @@JessicaWhitaker No, didn't know them. But since I paid via PayPal goods and services, I was protected, and got a full refund since I didn't receive the item that was described! I've been buying used gear from people I don't know for a few years and it's a very common thing to do, so I'm not worried about knowing the person or not. Sharing guidelines/ saying what to do when buying used gear is your personal approach and I'm not "in the wrong" for buying from people I don't know. Exposed might have been the wrong word. I just meant I'm not trying to show you up by saying that that lens goes for a lot less on the used market than you bought it for, and that they go for $1300 new now, not $1500!

    I shoot weddings and currently only have a sigma 35 and a Canon 50 1.4. Those 2 have worked for me for a while but I think I really need a zoom lens. I'm debating between the 24-105 or the more expensive 24-70. I'm torn!! The 24-105 is way cheaper and a lot more versatile but I really don't like the 4.0 aperature. The 24-70 is not as versatile and a LOT more expensive but I can go down to 1.4. Ugh! Thoughts?

      Zaina Salem There is no 24-70 f1.4 lens but 24-70 f2.8 if you can afford it!!

      Zaina Salem I do not recommend the 24-105 f/4, I had this lens and I swear I couldn’t sell it fast enough. I have a Canon, but because I could not afford the 24-70 2.8 at the Time, I settled for the Tamron 24-70 2.8 ... much less expensive and best purchase ever!!

      Zaina Salem you’re welcome and FYI, it’s true what she said ... it’s great for video not photos. That’s probably why I hated it, I don’t do videos.

    I hate talking about gear, but there is one lens I would super highly recommend you to try: the Sigma 50 1.4 Art. I don't care about sharpness and all the technical stuff, but that lens has just incredible characteristics. Technically it's perfect as well, the bokeh is smoother than on the 50 1.2 (yes it's not as wide aperture, but the quality of the bokeh is better), and it creates amazing texture on the skin, with a very unique 3D feel (due to the contrasty look). If you like the 24, you will be blown away from the 50.
    There is something that cannot be described, related to the 3D feel and the texture detail.
    And it wipes the floor with the 50 1.2 in terms of sharpness on wide apertures. Not even close, at all.
