    The 50mm 1.8 is incredible, for the price point and it's also the sharpest out of the 3. You can make up the actual quality difference in post. It's a little more now cause of the demand for it and at this time it's hard to get fast, I got mine from my local camera shop for 160 new. It's the stm version and believe me it's a boss lens. Also the stm version is built way better, it has a metal mount and is much better quality build wise. The auto focus is much quieter on the newer 50mm 1.8 stm lens, much quieter.

I know this can be a dumb question but wich lens you think should use 50mm 1.8 - 50mm 1.4 or 85mm 1.8? At the moment I’m planning to buy a Canon 90D the sigma lens 18-35mm “for video” but I can’t decide wich lens should I buy strictly for portrait. Thanks

    • @FFHavoK
      @FFHavoK 4 года назад +3

      85 is a far more complimentary focal length for portraits in general. That said, if you're going to have a 1.6x crop, the 50 is basically an 85. And the 85 is going to be a bit longer still. So both are going to be decent for you. I'd say for your use, go 50mm 1.4 for the focus speed and sharpness, and you're going to enjoy the 85mm equivalent length for hair and portrait work

    • @techoasys
      @techoasys 3 года назад

      @@FFHavoK I too agree with you on this. Get the 50mm F1.4 if you're going to be using a crop sensor Canon 90D. An 85mm on a crop sensor will be like shooting with a 135mm lens and will put you too far away from your subject, and what is, oftentimes, not mentioned will likely force you to raise your voice a bit when having them pose which isn't good for your clients. I shoot with a Samyang 85mm F1.4 on my Canon EOS RP and LOVE the focal length on full frame. I always shot with a 50mm on crop sensor.

Like so loud you avoid using it because you're so self conscious that everyone and their dog with in a mile can hear it.

    Used the 50/1.4 and still have the 50/1.2. The AF tends to get easily stuck with the 50/1.4 especially when no lens hood is used to secure its protruding front element. Repair of the 50/1.4 is expensive and often not worth to fix them. The f/1.2 lens has the best bokeh of all but is not very sharp wide open. Canon unfortunately offers no really good 50 mm prime lens. Better option is the Sigma 50 mm Art lens. Best EF lens for portraits IMO: Canon 135/2. Razor sharp wide open, easy to auto focus, and superb bokeh.

  • @timothylatour4977
    @timothylatour4977 3 года назад

    Thanks, the only video I have seen comparing all three. I'm just a hobbyist, and not even that serious about it, but I like to know about the equipment that's our there.
    It's a good video, but you delivered kind of a mixed message, though. You encouraged beginners to hold out for the 1.4 over the 1.8, and then later said the 1.8 is a good lens for the beginner. I think the 1.8 wins hands down as a beginning 50mm. Remember that most people who begin photography as a hobby give it up after a year or two. There's no point in buying into top notch equipment when the same experience can be had for half as much money. A beginner will not be able to see any appreciable difference between the 1.8 and 1.4.
    The bokeh never bothered me much regarding which lens to use, but the low light capability is very important. So the 1.4 would seem to be a better lens for me (even though I have only the 1.8). And I agree completely with your suggestion that it makes more sense to get an 85mm over the super duper 50mm 1.2, even though the 85 1.2 is crazy expensive. So as for me, I would spend my $1,300 on an 85mm 1.4 rather than a 50mm 1.2. Will you do a video comparing the three 85mm lenses, 1.2, 1.4, & 1.8?
    And your assessment of KEH Camera is spot on. I have dealt with them before and have found them to be honest, reliable, and with fair prices and quick on delivery.

    I was thinking of maybe upgrading my 50mm 1.8 mark II in the near future. Most reviews I have seen point to the 50mm 1.8 STM. They say it is better in focusing speed and silence and IQ vs the 1.4 (the extra light is better but at what cost). And besides the 1.2 aperture of the 1.2, I hear it is less sharp at 1.8 than all the other lenses and it is slow to focus (for that price is should be better at everything). I think I just mostly want a better build than my older 50mm 1.8 because I am coming from a crop body and my main lens was the 28mm 1.8 (which had a near 50mm range on a crop and I enjoyed the solid build). I now have a FF and my old 50mm 1.8 II just feels cheap.

    Why u comparing the old 1.8?! Shouldn't you be talking about the 1.8 STM? This video in Nov 2019 and this kinda is weird.

      @@JessicaWhitaker The 50 1.8 STM is the best budget lens that Canon has. It is even preferred over the 1.4 lens. The 1.2 is better of course and No.1 in the Canon range currently.

      @@melodychest9020 I agree. The 1.8 is generally considered a better overall lens than the 1.4. There are many reviews on this. The 1.2 is out of my budget.

    this video is a scam. its fake. 1.2 will have better bokeh than the 1.8 and 1.4 but in her video the blur is same.
