    Good video.
    For all the people shooting at night go with the 1.4 or 1.2. That wide open aperture helps tremendously with a good lens. I tried filming some video, and those f/1.4, f/1.2 (and rarely f/.95) absolutely grabbed color and you don't have to touch the color grading at all. The footage look like a hollywood film and you can a dd FX to it. The lens is the most important part to get the pro look. f/1.4 , f/1.2, f/0.95 is what you want. You can get away with f/1.8 if you shoot in the day or your subjects have white||asian or black light-skin olive yellow gold color.
    P.S.
    I'm USA black american, so f1.4 also helps with the skin tones especially at night. I tried a f/.95 and the footage was unnatural in the day, but did real well for night stuff. But f/0.95 is very expensive so don't do that if you're on the budget. The f/1.4 lens was good for both day and night.
    Most camera guys on youtube don't shoot or color grade the darker tones. Its not a different in the day. But when the background is dark, it makes a diff.

    I own the 50mm 1.4 and after 2 years of using it on the field shooting videos and pictures both for my business and my local church the auto focus& manual focus function stopped working! I Did my research and found out that this is the most common issue you'll encounter with this version of the 50mm, I'm not too mad about it because it definitely paid itself off,.. Just get the 1.8 ! And save your money or buy the extra money for gears like lighting,tripod,etc.

      Bummer man! Wish they last longer but what can we expect? We paying extra for an old production lens, Canon did a really poor job designing the focus elements inside the lens that they ended up using plastic on some of it. They all bend through time and the mechanics inside gets stuck causing the focus motor to jam..

    Great video.
    I’m mainly a stills photographer and have had the 1.4 for a long time and the 1.8 since it came out.
    I personally don’t shoot the 1.4 wide open as it too soft and there’s a stack of chromatic aberration. That said the 1.8 is also a little soft wide open. The 1.4 stopped down to 1.8 is great, almost better than the 1.8. Both great stopped down and at 2.8 both are pretty much equal.
    In terms of build quality and weight the 1.8 is great, as it’s light and well built. The 1.4 is noticeably heavier and after owning it this long, the focus ring is gritty and a concern, I feel the 1.8 will out last it. Last thing I’d like to add is that the 1.8 has curved aperture blade, which gives your these great circular out of focus shapes, if you shoot someone with lights behind them in the distance. I totally agree and skip the 1.4. Happy shooting!

      Thank you! And really great points!! I agree with everything you said. I’ve also had the same issue with the 1.4’s focus ring getting gritty. Thanks again for the input!🤙🏼

    Hi Matt first of all I would have liked that in the videos where you made the comparisons were a little more elaborate forcing the lenses to work in different situations such as the approach with moving objects, that the bokehs were more cinematic but in general very good video. I have a question: do I have an aps-c camera would you recommend me more 35mm or 50mm lens?

      @WakeUpMatt  4 года назад

      Thanks for the feedback! I'll make sure to do that in the next comparison video I do! In terms of the 35 or 50mm, it all depends on what you're trying to shoot and what you are wanting out of the lens. Both could be good. But you might be able to shoot more with the 35mm since the 50mm will be around a 75mm. But again, it all depends on what you're shooting.

    I am a beginner photographer and I’ve been watching videos and what lens to buy and the 50mm is the most frequent but I don’t know which kind to buy.

      If you are just beginning and are looking to get a 50mm, I’d recommend the f/1.8. It’s a great starter lens and for the price, you can’t beat it!
