If this thing is coming to Australia then it has to have the the Stinger engine as an option. TT V6 Petrol. Make a Diesel model, but give us something killa as well. I would buy one if it had the TT V6, and the dealer didn’t try to shaft me with 70% mark up. $86k for a Stinger, get a grip.
As a truck driver that until recently was driving a car carrier and delivering all kinds of cars, I would buy a Kia or Hyundai in a heartbeat. They make very impressive cars at a better price than others (except for the Chinese junk on the market).
I own a 2014 Hyundai i40 and can say it's a very nice car with plenty of get up and go, had an 05 BF Falcon before it and the i40 is as quick accelerating to overtake as it was but without the torque
I have a Colorado at the moment, and since GM and Holden gave up on Australia I'd honestly give one of these a genuine look over when replacement time comes. Kia's come a long way and have some seriously impressive offerings in other categories now.
We have started with the Kia carnival, then bought a Sorento, 350 km and still running well. We also have a 4yo Sportage. All of these cars have never ever left us on the side of the road with a breakdown. I personally drive a 2016 Hilux also 350 km and have a 2007 Hilux which just had a new engine transplant. I also had a new Hilux before that one. So i would still pass up a new Hilux for a untested Kia ute because the driving experience we get and have had from Kia far outweighs my time with Toyota. If the price is comparable and is as reliable as our other Kia cars, Then you new Kia ute for me
I think there would be enough people here in Australia who would buy a live front axle ute; even if it was a $3000 option. This would signal to people that it is a serious ute, not a SUV. This would be their point of difference that they'd need to stand out in a crowded marketplace. Coupled with the 3.0L V6 Diesel and front and rear lockers and we have a deal.
To be honest, I have no interest in going off road and flog the ute through ditches and over rocks. A simple rear wheel drive double cap family vechile will do for me.
I'm pretty excited to see this come out mainly because Kia's vehicle design language is far better than most of its competitors. If they get this ute right and make it not just another ute but a family friendly ute they will steal alot of the family market away from people who might typically buy a ranger or a Hilux.
Most families don't buy ute's though. They make really "*%&^%" family vehicles. Compromised in many ways. They are great vehicles for trades (doubling as a family vehicle) and farms though. I agree on the design language comment. ;)
I say they need to bring it here to the US. With Kia's better pricing and more features, if it's nearly on par with the market, it would be worth highly considering. Besides, most people don't use their trucks near their capabilities to begin with. If it tows and hauls 7/8th of the market average, I'd consider it.
Keen for the kia ute. Praying, crossing fingers and toes for a high performance variant. Missed out on buying a hoon ute (fpv or ss) would love to see that stinger engine slapped into a road focussed ute.
In the dual cab market a full size rear seat and a full size tray would win a lot of customers. Not sure if legislation restrictions has stopped this so far.
I'd certainly look at the Kia personally. I've had a lifetime of Datsun and Nissan products, all previously used. (I'm a motor mechanic) I decided to buy a D23 Navara in 2017, and I was horrified by the complete lack of ANY kind of customer service from Nissan Australia and its dealers. We also have a Kia Cerato sedan and the customer experience could not be further apart. Definitely worth a look when it lobs. The engine/s would need to be around 150kw and 500nm to be competitive in the market and not have ongoing DPF issues like Toyota and Isuzu do.
We bought a 2020 Kia Cerato a few years ago brand new. It's incredible, leather interior, DAB, Apple/Android connectivity, GPS, dual zone climate control, heated front seats, all the safety gear and a 7yr unlimited km warranty. Almost 3yrs on and very satisfied with the car and after-sales support. I can't wait to see their Ute!! But they have some serious competition with the GWM and LDV, give these manufacturers another 2yrs and they will both be doing really well in the market. My dad bought a GWM Cannon last year and it is great!! It's a comfy ride, with lots of room in the rear seat (I'm 182cm). Leather interior, Apple/Android connectivity, dual-zone connectivity, front diff lock, all the safety gear and a 7yr unlimited km warranty. 12mths on and it's been really reliable whilst they've been travelling with their caravan. This is the market KIA need to compete with initially and it's going to be a hard market for KIA to compete against initially.

It must have a higher GVM and GCM than the Ford Ranger. People want to actually be able to tow 3500kg legally. If they do that it will pull buyers back from Ram and landcruiser sales. A lot people are forced into those utes because the others won't do the job legally. I have a 79 ute and hate it but a hilux won't tow enough and the new ranger is unreliable. It would be nice if it had the straight 6 diesel not the v6 along with Awd, rear disc brakes and coil suspension all around.
At last another man who has a brain and hates Landcruisers and sees them for what they are. I hear you champ, and you’re so right there is nothing else on the market except for a smaller GVM truck like an Isuzu or a Mitsubishi Canter or similar to do that work. Looking forward to seeing if the new Kia ute or the HiLux, Triton or Navara can top what Ford's done with the Ranger/Everest. Also if and when Nissan will refresh the Patrol and where it and the Prado will sit price-wise relative to the dual-cab ute-based wagons.
The two huge problems that Kia will face are: 1) Hiluxes are bought by people who think Toyota's are bulletproof. To be fair, many work utes (those that do hard yakka daily as opposed to the tricked-up 4WD weekend warrior vehicles are Toyotas for reliability and minimal downtime; and 2) The former Holden Ute and Falcon Ute buyers who still believe "Made in Japan no goody" gravitated to Colorado (now extinct here) and Ranger. The Colorado buyers had to either begrudgingly become a Ford owner or stump up the dollars for a Silverado!
As a previous sportage owner, id buy KIA in a heartbeat vs the super expensive Fords/Toyotas or the el cheapo Chinesium Utes. If the KIA is as good all around as the Triton and in that price range it'll sell well.
If they want to be successful in South Africa they must have a diverse pricing strategy. Make a bottom of the range with back bumpers and pvc lining inside, no radio. Vinyl seats, make single cab, club cab. Price properly, dont run after Hilux and ranger money,
Hopefully this Kia/Hyundai is better put together than my iLoad - turbo stopped working at 85k - no warranty (wear and tear), rear door seal leaked after 3 years, entertainment system stopped working after 5 years, central locking now only works on some doors, internal lights only work on some doors, reversing camera has been repaired 3 times but still only works sometimes. This van has the worst brakes -have to replace rotors every 2 years and brake pads almost every year. The traction control is appalling and engages every few meters and gear change when it has rained. So, good luck!
disappointed if the images are anything to go by in relation to the rear overhang as this seems to be a major issue with many current utes as once weight added to the rear of a ute with so much overhang past rear axle there is a number of issues that arise. most are worse especially on undulating or corrugated roads, 1 chassis snapping 2 ride comfort 3 departure angle 4 need for higher rated springs and im guessing it would also affect towing abilities.
It will need to be very different from the plethora of utes current. It will need to offer items that the others do not - like independent suspension all round, front and rear differential locks, high trim levels in space cab, not just double cab, larger fuel capacity than 80 litres, moon/sun roof, 8 speed paddle shift, decent low range reduction better than 2.7:1 ratio, slide out cargo floor and electric cargo lid, to name a few.
Nup, i will stick with my Valiant Wayfarer. It will still be going with a million k's on it plus, when the Kia has blown up after 160,000k's! POS! The Val may not have power windows, or bucket seats, but it doesn't break down, and when it does i can fix it myself, it may not be fast, but it will tow my boat much better than the Kiarap. Not as easy to get a speeding ticket in the Val, and being a bench seat the Missus can get Real close! Nope you can shove the Kiarap up your fundamental orifice!
It will be interesting to see what they finally offer. Regarding slow development cycles, for ease of getting spare parts in regional areas it is a good thing to a certain extent
Long warrantys are a good idea, however you do become a captive to the dealership in a kinda way, you know, get your work done outside the dealership and although the law states, that you have recourse if the work is done by a fully qualified mechanic, however, with modern complex electronics you still need the dealerships.
Having just bought my wife the sportage she wanted to replace her kluga with and the f150 and Silverado way over priced, Kia Tasman is definitely on the list to replace my hilux.
I had a Kia Sorrento 04 model. 200 000 km .The body is good and interior is great but I can’t get a replacement engine. I will never buy Kia again. Diesel v6, I can see the bottom end snapping like a land rover.😂

VW did it with the Amarok. They went in cold and established a solid truck. Kia probably has a better reliability record and parts distribution in far flung parts of OZ would no doubt be better. Will take a lot to drag hard core Ford and Toyota fans away.... A 7 year warranty would certainly help. Any modern ute these days is not built to last -
Honestly, I don't see this taking off for them. They never had a strong body-on-frame offerings in America and those that they still sell in other countries are questionable at best. Also like always recent Hyundai-Kia products were lead by the head engineer Albert Bermann as the star engineering "hitman". However, he never had any experience designing or developing such offroad capable body on frame truck or SUV when he was at BMW. Yes he did engineer the E70 X5/X6, X3, X1 and what not but those aren't it. In fact this area isn't most of the European car manufactuer's forte. They need to hire entirely new engineers (probably American) that knows about trucks and offroad vehicles and that is an expensive commitment. I said American because even the head engineer behind the 4Runner, Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra is a man named Mike Sweers, not Japanese. I mean they could try to pick up couple of Japanese engineers from Toyota that worked on Hilux or Land Cruiser or something, but I don't think they would do that given the two countries' animosity. Then there is the problem of reliability and loyalty. Again their reliability is questionable and these pickups and offroad vehicles have a very strong loyalty. Hyundai does sell buses and trucks for commercial use in other countries. Yes those does count as body on frame. However, not only did those FAILED to capture any market from the established American, Japanese and some Western European truck manufacturers, they have even bigger issues to worry about as Russian, Chinese and even Indian truck manufacturers such as Kamaz, Gaz, Ural, Dongfeng, Foton, Mahindra and Tata are hot on their tail. Indeed in third world countries where originally the Koreans had held advantage over the more expensive Japanese and American manufacturers, their truck lines are being replaced by the said 3 countries. This is because they offer the same capability but cheaper, and if you want more reliability, you can step upto more expensive Japanese Hino, or Isuzu, or Fuso and UD trucks, so what's the point of buyng middle ground Hyundai? Yeah so in those countries we have predominantly those manufacturers and older Japanese and American trucks.
I believe that Kia is on a path to seriously disrupt the auto industry with multiple options and affordable prices such as BMW higher grade electronics on Kia vehicles at a much lower price . And with a warranty far better . I expect this to eventually to flow into their truck market too .
really wish I could get the Wildtrack with springs at the back. The whole idea that springs is only for rally champions and red bull racers wanting to do jumps is just silly. Adds a level of comfort for day to day driving as well as extra articulation just crawling around 4x4. Raptor should offer the v6 Diesel

I think we're in for a big shake-up as the UTE (nee Truck) market in the USA has collapsed as people return in droves to Cars - for Kia it is too little too late.
Unfortunately I can't forget how bad my friends Kia Rios (plural) were. Some dual cab ute owners are hard core and would take a fair bit of convincing, the majority however are not. It is just a fashion statement that will never be used as the original dual cabs were intended. If F-trucks, Chev's, Rams and Tundra's were more affordable here, everyone would have one.

If Kia can offer the V6 at a killer price point they will own the market and kill Ford and Toyota. If they price it like a Ranger then it will do incremental business.
I have a diesel Kia Sportage and love it so much, I've ordered a new one. I also have a Mazda BT 50. I was looking in the next few years to upgrade it to the DMax/BT or even the Triton (because of their 10 year warranty) but what puts me off the Triton is the small engine. I really want an engine at least 3 litres, so the new Kia ute would certainly be of interest to me.
I’m in a Job where the state Govt let’s me choose whatever 4x4 I want every yr or so as what I do everyday is what most 4x4 enthusiasts or retirees plan and save for, also cost is not an issue either in my case so I get trick out whatever I want on my utility. Anyway my 2cents on the KIA and from our industry contracts advise is keep an eye on it as it is designed to grind down the competition. Hyundai and Kia did not become successful in Australia by accident and their primary products in the real world are Ship building and Military vehicles manufacturing. They know heavy industry and know how to build off road vehicles.
Why do so many people pour so much money into an “asset” like a motor vehicle? From my point of view they aren’t an “asset” more so a liability. They decline in value with every km and year you put on it, and they cost money to run with fuel, servicing, insurance and registration etc. A lot of expense to shift a person from point A to point B! Think about it!
if you really look for reliability then go buy an old one since new ones do have more advanced digital tech (especially the infotainment) but for me it makes those vehicles less reliable. Car manufacturers nowadays care more about the stock market than its customers. Good old things are still the greatest!
You would think so, investment into diesel vehicles is a waste of time with the ban getting ever closer to 2030. So will use left over motors and then move to Ev hopefully sooner rather then later

The Stinger didn't really make any good impression in South Africa. I have seen 3 Kia Stinger's in 5 years on our roads, also the one's that were launched here in South Africa was only a 2.0L turbo. I apologize! We did have a 3.3L V6 turbo model. There is a 2018 model for sale at R541 900 with 66 500km on the speedo.

It is beyond me, how a company that speaks out loud, that they are going to make high initial sales, intends to offer standard specifications for the market.

I’ve got a Kia Stinger and a Jeep Wrangler CRD.
I’d buy their ute in a heartbeat. The Jeep would be for sale and two Kia’s in the driveway.

This van has the worst brakes -have to replace rotors every 2 years and brake pads almost every year. The traction control is appalling and engages every few meters and gear change when it has rained. So, good luck!
disappointed if the images are anything to go by in relation to the rear overhang as this seems to be a major issue with many current utes as once weight added to the rear of a ute with so much overhang past rear axle there is a number of issues that arise. most are worse especially on undulating or corrugated roads, 1 chassis snapping 2 ride comfort 3 departure angle 4 need for higher rated springs and im guessing it would also affect towing abilities.
Real Utes have two doors.
It will need to be very different from the plethora of utes current. It will need to offer items that the others do not - like independent suspension all round, front and rear differential locks, high trim levels in space cab, not just double cab, larger fuel capacity than 80 litres, moon/sun roof, 8 speed paddle shift, decent low range reduction better than 2.7:1 ratio, slide out cargo floor and electric cargo lid, to name a few.
Nup, i will stick with my Valiant Wayfarer. It will still be going with a million k's on it plus, when the Kia has blown up after 160,000k's! POS! The Val may not have power windows, or bucket seats, but it doesn't break down, and when it does i can fix it myself, it may not be fast, but it will tow my boat much better than the Kiarap. Not as easy to get a speeding ticket in the Val, and being a bench seat the Missus can get Real close! Nope you can shove the Kiarap up your fundamental orifice!
Well I would go the old valiant wayfarer. Any day.

Long warrantys are a good idea, however you do become a captive to the dealership in a kinda way, you know, get your work done outside the dealership and although the law states, that you have recourse if the work is done by a fully qualified mechanic, however, with modern complex electronics you still need the dealerships.

VW did it with the Amarok. They went in cold and established a solid truck. Kia probably has a better reliability record and parts distribution in far flung parts of OZ would no doubt be better.
Will take a lot to drag hard core Ford and Toyota fans away.... A 7 year warranty would certainly help.

I was alot more excited when I heard that Kia would be putting a 205 kw straight six turbo diesel in the Tasman.
Honestly, I don't see this taking off for them. They never had a strong body-on-frame offerings in America and those that they still sell in other countries are questionable at best. Also like always recent Hyundai-Kia products were lead by the head engineer Albert Bermann as the star engineering "hitman". However, he never had any experience designing or developing such offroad capable body on frame truck or SUV when he was at BMW. Yes he did engineer the E70 X5/X6, X3, X1 and what not but those aren't it.
In fact this area isn't most of the European car manufactuer's forte. They need to hire entirely new engineers (probably American) that knows about trucks and offroad vehicles and that is an expensive commitment. I said American because even the head engineer behind the 4Runner, Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra is a man named Mike Sweers, not Japanese. I mean they could try to pick up couple of Japanese engineers from Toyota that worked on Hilux or Land Cruiser or something, but I don't think they would do that given the two countries' animosity.
Then there is the problem of reliability and loyalty. Again their reliability is questionable and these pickups and offroad vehicles have a very strong loyalty.
Hyundai does sell buses and trucks for commercial use in other countries. Yes those does count as body on frame. However, not only did those FAILED to capture any market from the established American, Japanese and some Western European truck manufacturers, they have even bigger issues to worry about as Russian, Chinese and even Indian truck manufacturers such as Kamaz, Gaz, Ural, Dongfeng, Foton, Mahindra and Tata are hot on their tail. Indeed in third world countries where originally the Koreans had held advantage over the more expensive Japanese and American manufacturers, their truck lines are being replaced by the said 3 countries. This is because they offer the same capability but cheaper, and if you want more reliability, you can step upto more expensive Japanese Hino, or Isuzu, or Fuso and UD trucks, so what's the point of buyng middle ground Hyundai? Yeah so in those countries we have predominantly those manufacturers and older Japanese and American trucks.

Will it last? Reliability is the most important thing not looks or price. What good is it if it’s broken in 2 - 3 yrs?
I believe that Kia is on a path to seriously disrupt the auto industry with multiple options and affordable prices such as BMW higher grade electronics on Kia vehicles at a much lower price . And with a warranty far better . I expect this to eventually to flow into their truck market too .
really wish I could get the Wildtrack with springs at the back. The whole idea that springs is only for rally champions and red bull racers wanting to do jumps is just silly. Adds a level of comfort for day to day driving as well as extra articulation just crawling around 4x4. Raptor should offer the v6 Diesel

Kia has come a long way and I would consider buying one but would only prefer petrol.

I think we're in for a big shake-up as the UTE (nee Truck) market in the USA has collapsed as people return in droves to Cars - for Kia it is too little too late.
Unfortunately I can't forget how bad my friends Kia Rios (plural) were. Some dual cab ute owners are hard core and would take a fair bit of convincing, the majority however are not. It is just a fashion statement that will never be used as the original dual cabs were intended. If F-trucks, Chev's, Rams and Tundra's were more affordable here, everyone would have one.

I have a diesel Kia Sportage and love it so much, I've ordered a new one.
I also have a Mazda BT 50. I was looking in the next few years to upgrade it to the DMax/BT or even the Triton (because of their 10 year warranty) but what puts me off the Triton is the small engine.
I really want an engine at least 3 litres, so the new Kia ute would certainly be of interest to me.
I’m in a Job where the state Govt let’s me choose whatever 4x4 I want every yr or so as what I do everyday is what most 4x4 enthusiasts or retirees plan and save for, also cost is not an issue either in my case so I get trick out whatever I want on my utility. Anyway my 2cents on the KIA and from our industry contracts advise is keep an eye on it as it is designed to grind down the competition. Hyundai and Kia did not become successful in Australia by accident and their primary products in the real world are Ship building and Military vehicles manufacturing. They know heavy industry and know how to build off road vehicles.
Ute buyers look for reliability, so it should sell well. Toyota and Ford both have reliability issues.
Yet they are the biggest sellers. Smart buyers look for reliability, most clearly aren't.
Why do so many people pour so much money into an “asset” like a motor vehicle? From my point of view they aren’t an “asset” more so a liability.
They decline in value with every km and year you put on it, and they cost money to run with fuel, servicing, insurance and registration etc.
A lot of expense to shift a person from point A to point B!

if you really look for reliability then go buy an old one since new ones do have more advanced digital tech (especially the infotainment) but for me it makes those vehicles less reliable. Car manufacturers nowadays care more about the stock market than its customers. Good old things are still the greatest!

Kia gearbox needs to be rectified. It gets overheated easily.
The Stinger didn't really make any good impression in South Africa. I have seen 3 Kia Stinger's in 5 years on our roads, also the one's that were launched here in South Africa was only a 2.0L turbo. I apologize! We did have a 3.3L V6 turbo model. There is a 2018 model for sale at R541 900 with 66 500km on the speedo.
I would like to inform you it isn't a ute, it's a pickup. Ute's have complete full side not a removable tub.

Honestly too little too late. Why do I say that? Same reason that you state. The specifications that you mention is a copy of what is being offered now. It is beyond me, how a company that speaks out loud, that they are going to make high initial sales, intends to offer standard specifications for the market.

Did you use the Stinger as an example because it suits your narrative? How about the Kia Sportage or 1 of there other models that sell reasonably well for what they are..If you read my reply properly you would of noticed that i said “if they get it right”, i didn’t mention if they do a “mediocre” job of it. You need to get with the times, out of the hundreds of thousands of dual cab utes sold how many actually take them to the “outback”..
Kia’s biggest battle will be people like you who have a pre determined mindset, but look how far they have come in the last 10 years..FYI i have never owned and have no intention of owning a Kia..
