Great review. I have seen so many journalists compare this to a $70k Ranger and write it off. They’ve completely missed the point. It’s not trying to compete with Ford’s refinement or Toyota’s resale value; it’s offering customers a ‘good enough’ entry in to the market and a vehicle that will go 90% of the places the others will, without having to remortgage the family home.
Most reviews of this ute is overly positive but after 17000km of owning one, I am yet to find a review that identifies its achillies heel- the electronic safety systems. These are utter rubbish. Nervous, even jittery. Unrefined and untuned and virtually useless. The adaptive cruise control appears to be managed by and old engineer in China, sitting behind his computer and taking charge of your ute. It overreacts on curves, slowing down the vehicle totally unneccesarily with other cars threatening to tailgate you. Useless tech. The lane assist is similarly jittery and unreliable and to disable it you have to press on the touch screen 4 times every time you start the ute. The proximity sensor at the rear, when towing anything, screams every time you slow down at a stop or in traffic. No way of switching it off permanently! There are more issues but it spoils an otherwise solid ute. Sorry I elected to buy this one- should have settled for a second hand Ford, Toyota or VW.
Excellent review. I've had my Cannon L for nearly 2 years and have 50000 klms on it and still looks and drives like new, no loose parts. I'm averaging 8.7 litres per 100 klms.
I have owned this ute for over 2 years now (over 40,000 km). I simply cannot fault it and if (because after driving many through the years) the Ranger is better (I cannot tell the difference), it certainly isn't $30,000 better. For me it wasn't about "being able to afford it", I just couldn't justify spending $73,000 for a Ranger with the same equipment level. I bought my last XLT new just for $43,000 only 8-9 years ago. And that was pricey as is. So you tell me why an equivalent Ranger costs almost $30-40,000 more these days? Anyhow, I have another 5 years to go on the warranty with this one, so far no regrets...
I bought one almost 2 years ago.. I regularly tow a 24 foot (2.5 Tonne) caravan all over Western Australia.. No issues.. Love it. Would buy again. Looked at the Musso.. but prefered my Cannon X
A review that gets the point, would love to see a comparison review of the challenger brands: ldv, ssangyong, mahindra and GWM. All brands in the same price point. Every other review puts them up against much more expensive utes, and these come out second best, and fair enough, I’d hate to think you only pay 20-30k more for a badge.
Weirdly enough they have another ute in China (the Shan-hai Cannon if you want to look it up) with a 2.4 litre motor pushing out 480NM. I would imagine it would fit in this ute easily considering how big the bonnet bulge is, and they could keep it as a reason to get a Vanta or XS-R, or maybe even the Cannon-X over the Cannon-L
Im still shocked that you didnt trash this vehicle😮. Regardless thanks for the review, youre the first to quote the tray measurements, its really helped. A colleague of mine saw a red one on demo and she loved it, she likes to carry stuff(hardware and furniture) quite a bit and is currently driving a Rav4 from 2 generations back(has the spare on the tailgate) and shes been using that to haul her odds and ends. I was steering her towards a PPV or a MPV but when I measured the cargo areas most of them have less cargo accommodations that what she has now(they really dont make them like they used to). While the length of the tray the is shorter than what she has now in total(she has about 72" with the back seats down) the width is exceptional. Ill have to give this another look, thanks.
Great review, Matt, but I still think dual cab Ute's are hideous unless you are a tradie. Having said that, this would be one of my picks as paying $70,000 plus for a Ranger or Hilux is insane.
Thanks mate. Yeah, I can’t fathom spending $70k on a ute. There are so many cars I could buy for $70k, and I mean not just one good car, but like eight secondhand cool cars! Haha

how do you agree with what is said if you don't know what it is about? And why wouldn't you buy Chinese? China is pretty much the only country that actually buys stuff from us ($150+ billion worth, including iron ore), while all the Toyotas, Nissans, Mazdas, Fords only cash out in Australia. And talking of Ford, how quickly people forget all the taxpayers pumped into the pockets of Ford execs to keep Ford production in Australia. At the end, when they left, they said that car prices are going to be even better and 9 years later, the ford XLT that cost me $40 odd thousand now it costs north of $70K. Interesting you say that. People seem to rave about how good their Mussos are, but mine's been terrible, although a lot of the problems have been down to the dealer doing the warranty work. I'm getting rid of my Musso and thinking about a GWM.

I'm currently leaning toward a Musso as a future first for me 'ute', though the option of a Canon is a possibility. With either of them, I have a challenge of no Ssangyong/KG or GWM dealer in central Oz. I have talked with the happy owners of both vehicles.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the auto-locking rear differential on the Musso. I also found a local company called Savage that make basically every aftermarket product you could want for the Cannon, all locally in Brisbane.
Great, concise review and I very much appreciate you leaving all the racist undertones out. Be careful though, you might get a call from the 'reviewers guild' chastising you for not saying the 'C' word a minimum 58 times... :)) I test drove this and the Musso and very much liked both compared to the mainstream brands. For now, we bought a Rexton Ultimate (again saving around $25k compared to the comp.) and will revisit the Musso and Cannon when the face lifts arrive later in the year. Thanks again!
A great non-origin centric review. Not what we're used to. But amusing that GWM is still considered a " challenger" brand. Holden after the same time in Oz was offering the EH. How long do we want?.
@@theodociocozanitis5437 I somewhat agree on the lack of on-demand 4x4, though it's not something I personally need as I don't often traverse severe adverse weather. i just got the GWM Poer for a work ute moving from Nissan D40 that had done 600,000 and i Travel for work Avg 5000 to 6000kms a month and after 3000km so far in the GWM can say the ride is better than the Nissan but what lets it down is that Lane Assist have to turn that off all the time still not a fan of the push botton hand brake . poor fuel 10.1 to 11.1 L/100km highway Nissan was 8.7 L/100km but the number one deal breaker if i was buying this with my own money is the Cruise Control System cant stay at the set speed going up a hill it just doesn't know to gear down to maintain the speed but if it does gear down wont hold it long enough to get to set speed i have tryed it in sports mode its a bit better but still usless i thought it was just this GWM but a freind has same ute and it does it to looks like its a dirty little secret that know ones saying about it . i would like to hear from other owners on threre GWM Cruise System ]
Are you going to review the Xsr? What do you think? Looking for a good 4x4 to get into family camping trips in Oz. Looking at Cannons and used Tritons, Hilux, Rangers. Hard to decide!
Yep I did a little off-road review of the XSR this week. If you plan to bash through the bush it makes sense but a suspension upgrade wouldn’t go astray.
@@therightcar Thanks very much. What is your opinion on - new budget Chinese ute, or used (and potentially abused) ranger/hilux/Triton? Great channel. Enjoy your reviews!
At about 9:40 when you talk about a bigger engine could be coming soon... was that the XSR and so the rumor wasn't quite correct, or is there still a chance something new could be coming very soon? Very tempted to buy one of these, the Vanta or the XSR. Unsure if i should hold off to see what comes. Thanks
@@Simon-mc3sqplus guess what, in another 5 years you can update to a newer one (whole new drive line, no fatigued components) and still have change in the bank whilst the others are still chugging round in their 6 years plus old vehicle, hahaha, it's not rocket science. Can't comprehend the flack this cannon cops, it's so plush, comfy and better appointed than the dearer options others brands expect us to pay big dollars for. Just do it, get a Cannon. Won't be too long and these things will be achieving sales figures to concern the big boys.
Fun fact, Cannon puts more power to the wheels than a Navara and Triton, purely down to the ZF8 speed, its also quicker too, but they are all slow really. Then remember the price and how much a dyno tune costs, and you see why so many people have one.
I don’t think that you can compare the performance potential of either the Triton or the Navara’s 2.3L twin turbo to the Cannon. Both are better, less stressed engines that have higher and safer performance potential. An ECU flash also has warranty implications. I think the 2L engine is good enough, but not for a lot of applications such as heavy towing that this vehicle claims to be good at.
Remember in the 1970's everyone calling Toyota cheap Jap Crap. Now Hilux and Landcruiser are way over price because they showed how reliable they are on the market. Maybe if Chinese brands can show how better built they are Japan makers can hang their heads in shame because their brands have just be out classed
Thanks Matt, great video! I was really keen on this Ute until I saw how many owners have been complaining of DPF issues. Also unfortunately the payload is just over 1000kg, which means you can’t salary package it 😢
@@orangejuicepony6881 that’s an over-simplification and inaccurate. Yes, all diesels have DPFs but this vehicle’s DPF is significantly less sophisticated than it’s modern rivals who have 5-10 more years of R&D. For every customer who has never had to do a manual burn, there are 5 who complain that the vehicle went in to limp mode on the highway for seemingly no reason. if there is an over-representation of DPF issues in GWM customers, it either means that there is a systemic vehicle fault or a sales culture education failing regarding diesel driving behaviour. Either are a good enough reason for the average buyer to do more research before buying one.
@@M8YM8 LOL what a load of made up crap, at least you can do your own manual burn. All the privileged diesel owners who paid twice as much get a trip to the dealer, where is the R&D in that 😂😂
I dont understand why the insurance premiums are so high on this $40k ute, $1500-1800AUD a year... my friend has a $100k aston martin vantage and he only pays $1200 a year? Even a Raptor is not much more than the insurance on this thing? seems crazy given parts would be so cheap to replace.
Excellent review as always. Can I please make a request? Can you please make a "comparo" between this GWM Cannon and the Ssangyong Musso Grand? Thank you, and more power to you and to your channel.
I went with the Ssangyong Musso ELX Auto (Love it). Didn't need the extra length offered with the XLV. The shorter wheel base of the ELX is more suited for off road imo . The new Musso and others in the range being are being released in the last quarter of this year (apparently) and will coincide with the new name launch .. KD .. or KDM .. or something like that .. Cheers
What’s everyone else’s real world fuel economy as a real, real world average? My 2013 Colorado is at 8.7l/ph. You’d think technology would make it better than mY13 ?
@@stendecstretcher5678 Yes, my point is it's re-sale price will be very low; as a % of original price. Go ahead, buy Chinese - it's a free country; well, Australia is. I will not. At budget level I'll buy a Musso and at premium level I'll buy a Ranger or Hilux. Mid-Range I'd go for a D-Max.
Hi mate. No, I can’t say I do have that. In fact, I’ve only had that tech do it’s thing on a couple of cars over the years it has been available… and I drive a lot of cars in a lot of places where pedestrians are. Maybe I’m just more road-attentive than some?
look up on youtube, there are a few couples/young families going around Australia towing a 3 ton caravan for the last year or so. I towed 2,2 tons with it with ease. IMO you need to be crazy to tow anything more than the tare weight of a ute/car and for the cannon that is 2.2 Tons
if your looking at GWM Cannon then you really should be looking at the Nissan Navara or Mitsubishi triton instead, do not be tempted by PRICE, the Cannon is not the answer. For me The LDV and GWM product are not there yet, I would rather the Musso if you must get something in this price range, as I mention above the Navara and triton are far superior.
Fair call, but you can’t blame people for choosing a vehicle that has so much more equipment for less money and a more user-friendly warranty program, too…
@@therightcar - not at all, if price is the main motivation sure but the Musso is ahead against the Cannon and T60, again don't let price temp you, the Navara and Triton are far superior and deals can be made to get them over the Cannon and T60.
@@351tgvthe major thing here is the price. It is priced to be a budget ute and that’s also its market position. The upper class Shanghai cannon’s price range is similar with other main players in the market
Price is the only reason here as to why you would purchase Again don't be tempted by price unless you really don't care about 5 to 7 years down the road. Musso is better in this price bracket range.
no offence, but from your comment it'd pretty clear you didn't even driven one. I drive currently a Triton and Navarra in the work fleet and owned a Ranger for 5 years and all I can say, that if you didn't know what you're driving, you wouldn't know the difference. All that talk about the Ranger drives better is BS. But even if it did not, $30K better. The Triton definitely drives worse and what modern diesel car needs a valve adjustment at every 50-60K km as the Triton does? Anyway, I like the Navara but even that is $15-20K more on the road. And, I get 9-10 litres out of my Cannon to 100km, with the ranger you were lucky to get 12, the Navara is 11 ish and so is the Triton. And all that "engine power" talk, never once though the 120 KW from the Cannon wasn't enough. I suggest you go and have a closer look and get positively surprised as I was. TBH, if it wasn't for two mates owning Great Walls with over 200,000 kms, I would probably wouldn't have looked either...
You've never had to work on them 😂 complete nightmare, parts are ridiculous with wait times to get. There adas systems are a nightmare to calibrate all panel joints were rusted in the tub on a 6month old one trying to get any repair procedures, the list goes on. There cheap to buy and cheap and nastly built.
Lol there’s always a fan boy ready to die in a ditch to justify why their knock off Chinese Ute wasn’t the worst financial decision that they’ve made in the last 5 years 😂 Let us know how great it is when it comes time to sell it in 5 years and it’s only worth $10k
@@M8YM8This is good ute and exposes how much established brands are ripping off people. It’s not the best ute but very decent and for the price excellent value. I do get why many would be wary given previous Chinese ute offerings.
Any consideration for where this Ute is made. The west imposed strict rules on its own industries around working conditions, worker pay and environmental protection of course making these vehicles very expensive, then China comes out with a cheap Ute and 000’s rush out to buy it.
Cheap? Same ($40-45K) what the Ranger used to be just 8-9 years ago. The other way around I'd say. And if it weren't for china buying 150+ billion worth of stuff from us, you probably wouldn't be able to afford the lifestyle you have. Also, what does Japan, USA and all the other western countries actually buy from us? Not much if anything at all. So when you buy Chinese, you actually support our own Mining industry, because more you buy, the more materials they buy from us. If you buy a Ranger, you send your $$ to America, same goes for Korea and Japan and getting not much in return. On top of that, Chinese products are hit with tariffs. 20-30% of the price of this ute will end up in he pocket of the government, not so much the case of Rangers, Hiluxes and all the other brands with Fre trade agreements. So, yeah, don't buy Chinese, but at least don't knock it either...
Not true, look at what costs japan and korean cars sold for in other countries....Australia gets loaded with extra margin for one reason only....profit.

i just got the GWM Poer for a work ute moving from Nissan D40 that had done 600,000 and i Travel for work Avg 5000 to 6000kms a month and after 3000km so far in the GWM can say the ride is better than the Nissan but what lets it down is that Lane Assist have to turn that off all the time still not a fan of the push botton hand brake . poor fuel 10.1 to 11.1 L/100km highway Nissan was 8.7 L/100km but the number one deal breaker if i was buying this with my own money is the Cruise Control System cant stay at the set speed going up a hill it just doesn't know to gear down to maintain the speed but if it does gear down wont hold it long enough to get to set speed i have tryed it in sports mode its a bit better but still usless i thought it was just this GWM but a freind has same ute and it does it to looks like its a dirty little secret that know ones saying about it . i would like to hear from other owners on threre GWM Cruise System
]
In Mauritius we get 10 years warranty or 150000 km.
Wow!
A review of the petrol Amarok would be very interesting.
Excellent GWM family car
At about 9:40 when you talk about a bigger engine could be coming soon... was that the XSR and so the rumor wasn't quite correct, or is there still a chance something new could be coming very soon?
Very tempted to buy one of these, the Vanta or the XSR. Unsure if i should hold off to see what comes. Thanks
Great review!
Have they upgraded the HVAC? Lousy cooling in west Queensland summer.
I was gonna buy one, but i hear there is a newer one with higher power engine coming. I'll wait i think
Should be here within 12 months, I reckon.
Yeah, I’m in no hurry, I’ll wait, fuck paying $70k-$90k for a Ford or VW etc when this does the same thing for half the price.
@@M8YM8 the 2.3 (Renault dCi engine) is horrible
Remember in the 1970's everyone calling Toyota cheap Jap Crap. Now Hilux and Landcruiser are way over price because they showed how reliable they are on the market. Maybe if Chinese brands can show how better built they are Japan makers can hang their heads in shame because their brands have just be out classed
Can you do a review for the new cannon xsr please? Thanks
Hi. Probably won’t be doing a stand-alone review just for XSR.
Thanks Matt, great video! I was really keen on this Ute until I saw how many owners have been complaining of DPF issues. Also unfortunately the payload is just over 1000kg, which means you can’t salary package it 😢
Ironically 99% of diesels have the same challenges, its just the idiotic owners who are mostly the problem.
Nothing wrong with the vehicle. Owners need to read the owners manual. Problem fixed
@@M8YM8 LOL what a load of made up crap, at least you can do your own manual burn. All the privileged diesel owners who paid twice as much get a trip to the dealer, where is the R&D in that 😂😂
City sooks complaining about the dpf? It’s not an issue, do a burn
Great job 👏
Great work
I dont understand why the insurance premiums are so high on this $40k ute, $1500-1800AUD a year... my friend has a $100k aston martin vantage and he only pays $1200 a year? Even a Raptor is not much more than the insurance on this thing? seems crazy given parts would be so cheap to replace.
Dunno my triton was 1400 a year
Excellent review as always. Can I please make a request? Can you please make a "comparo" between this GWM Cannon and the Ssangyong Musso Grand? Thank you, and more power to you and to your channel.
I think some Utes have become overpriced, it’s refreshing to see you get more bang for your buck on this ute.
Cheers
KG Mobility (scooter)
...thanks, I'm looking at either a Musso or Canon as my first ute purchase, though no dealer for either in 1400kms. Third option is a base Triton.
Is there a Mitsubishi dealer closer? If yes, buy it.
Yep, looking forward to the KG Mobility brand launch.
@@therightcar mobility scooter!
They are probably gonna add a hybrid version with more power and torque in the next model
It would be a huge move to add hybrid!
Great reviews
Can you do a review on the Mahindra ute
Can you please try saying “Hey Dragon!” When you’re inside
Apparently it’s like hey siri but for the Ute ..interesting to see if it works 😊
Haha I didn’t try that. But if I drive another one I will!
@@therightcar apparently it’s in the Cannon x 4x4 only… i just test drove a Cannon L and …very impressive! As good as the other utes out there
Is this the 2023 GWM Ute Cannon Vanta Auto 4x4 Dual Cab
Good reveiw, so what part of the seats aren't leather?
The bits that are plastic. 🤪
The grainier surfaces are leather.
That is the blingiest front end I have ever seen, even more so than TOYOTA.
Good looking car
How about a SsangYong Musso
As I pointed out in the competitors section, it’s a great alternative.
Wonderful nice car 👍👍
Hows the drive and handling compared to a triton?
Steering is lighter, handling is a bit less agile because it’s physically a lot larger.
What’s everyone else’s real world fuel economy as a real, real world average? My 2013 Colorado is at 8.7l/ph. You’d think technology would make it better than mY13 ?
Very nice ❤
Thank you, a wonderful channel, but we hope that there is a translation into Arabic
when was this cannon released in australia? how come im reading comments of been using it for 2yrs but your review was only posted 4mos ago?
Like 2020 or something
Imagine being the motoring journo that gets to review the Great Wall and dispense loving platitudes about it. That must feel super awesome.
Looks hot
I have driven both the cannon and the musso and the Musso to me is just a better car
Agree.
After 5 years of use, the Cannon ute will almost be worthless vs a Hilux or Ranger.
Fair enough. I like the Musso, too!
@@Richard-sl8we its cheaper to start off with you goon.
Cool car
Hi Mate, do you have real life experience with this GWM Ute whereas it really stopped when it encountered a pedestrian in front of the vehicle? Thanks
Hi mate. No, I can’t say I do have that. In fact, I’ve only had that tech do it’s thing on a couple of cars over the years it has been available… and I drive a lot of cars in a lot of places where pedestrians are.
Maybe I’m just more road-attentive than some?
Does it tow okay just looked at the mazda bt50 for 75k but might have to have a look at this as you say for the price looks the goods 😉 😀
Sadly I haven’t towed with one. But I can see why it might make more sense considering it’s so much cheaper than the Mazda you’re looking at!
look up on youtube, there are a few couples/young families going around Australia towing a 3 ton caravan for the last year or so. I towed 2,2 tons with it with ease. IMO you need to be crazy to tow anything more than the tare weight of a ute/car and for the cannon that is 2.2 Tons
Nice
Great so beautiful❤
Nice ♥️
❤
❤❤
How's the reliability though?
It’s a great question. I can’t tell you the answer, sorry.
👍
Since when in the world we start comparing $40k ute with $70k ones?
Since utes that used to cost $40K now cost $70K.
No you can use voice command
I’ve found it to be super unreliable.
😯😍❤️
The Mahindra is calling ....
It is!
❤🎉
it is basically a tundra from wish
Is that a problem?
Anyone able to give us a 200k km review?
Would be great to know how it holds up after that much punishment!
😮😮😮
Oh yeah
if your looking at GWM Cannon then you really should be looking at the Nissan Navara or Mitsubishi triton instead, do not be tempted by PRICE, the Cannon is not the answer.
Price is the only reason here as to why you would purchase
Again don't be tempted by price unless you really don't care about 5 to 7 years down the road.
Correct. I review cars. It’s not real work! Hahaa
Is it a car or is it a ute either I'm confused or he is confused?
It’s a ute. If I called it a car it wasn’t to try and perplex you, as I clearly did.
Amyzing 😂😂😂
They are cheap for a reason, you pay for what you get.
Wao🎉😂
Thanks!
😊😅😊😊
Thanks!

Lol there’s always a fan boy ready to die in a ditch to justify why their knock off Chinese Ute wasn’t the worst financial decision that they’ve made in the last 5 years 😂 Let us know how great it is when it comes time to sell it in 5 years and it’s only worth $10k
@@M8YM8 Thankfully punters can make their own decisions.
@@M8YM8This is good ute and exposes how much established brands are ripping off people. It’s not the best ute but very decent and for the price excellent value. I do get why many would be wary given previous Chinese ute offerings.
@@M8YM8 Goon
@@M8YM8 they forget their top tier brands are all made in Thailand. More 3rd world than china.
Hahahahaha
Bt-50 51.5

Any consideration for where this Ute is made. The west imposed strict rules on its own industries around working conditions, worker pay and environmental protection of course making these vehicles very expensive, then China comes out with a cheap Ute and 000’s rush out to buy it.
I agree, personally I'd never buy a Chinese made car. Korean yes, Japanese yes.
Mate, the Hilux, Ranger and the rest are all made in Thailand. More 3rd world than China.
Just don’t buy anything from China LOL. BTW it is made in my hometown. A lot of people have it.
Not true, look at what costs japan and korean cars sold for in other countries....Australia gets loaded with extra margin for one reason only....profit.
